Pages refusing to save with Snow Leopard

I installed SL a few days ago.
Yesterday I ran into this glitch: Opened a document from a template and tried saving the work: couldn't save! Tried with a blank document, same problem. Can open existing documents, edit them, but can't save. Anybody else having the problem?

Not having the issue here; opened a previous doc this AM, when i Quit, it optioned to save and where, so all is ok here with SL and Pages. I opened a blank, did command S, it worked fine, saved to my user documents file by default; something new in SL then opened another blank, command shift S, and saved the new doc to desktop, as i usually like to do. Don't know if it would make a difference, but do you keep your Pages App still in the HD Applications folder, still within the iWork folder? This is always the preferred method, and just drag your Pages App icon to the Dock, if you wish to have a quick launch. I once had issues when I moved my Apps to my User folder way back when, which is why I let it stay where it is installed now, instead of moving, or duplicating, or copying.
keep us informed if you find an answer,or what the issue may have been, and good luck

Installed Snow Leopard, now all files in all programs super slow to open and save - Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark -- all now at least 4-5X slower to open files and save -- here's what I've tried so far:
    repaired permissions
emptied font cache - restarted up in safe mode
    re installed Snow Leopard
renamed old preferences and restarted to create new prefs
I'm hating Snow Leopard -- eeesh -- this is no upgrade, just a big waste of time and money, any ideas?

  • How can I download a version of Pages for my computer with Snow Leopard

How can I download a version of Pages for my old MacBook that can only run Snow Leopard?

    Hi nteo,
See this Mac knowledge base article.
Snow Leopard must be at least version 10.6.6 to access the Mac app store. Use Apple menu > About this Mac to determine the version you have installed. Use Software Update to update the OS, if necessary.

  • Word often quits on Save with Snow Leopard

I have a MacBook Pro and an iMAC. Since upgrading to SL I've found that Word will often quit on the first time I try to save a document. It does it sometimes with the Macbook and all the time with the iMAC.
I'm hoping for a patch. Anyone know anything about this?

I'm also finding Safari and preview will just just down as well. With Safari it shuts down when I right click a link to download the associated file. Preview does it after an edit when I go to re-save the file under a new name or in a different directory. The weird thing is that it only does some of the time but often enough to be really annoying.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Pages 4.2 update doesn't run with Snow Leopard

I keep both Montain Lion and Snow Leopard on the same computer, different partitions. After upgrading Pages this week, it no longer runs under Snow Leopard.  The icon changes and a launch message says I can't use this version with Snow Leopard. It looks like this is true of all the iWorks apps. This is the first time I recall the iWorks suite not being backwards compatible.
My advice is to keep a backup copy or older iWorks releases if you need to run Snow Leopard. The App store only has the Mountain Lion version so I can't just download the SnowLeopard compatible version.

The same exact thing happened to me. I have a thread on this same issue but no one has responded. Did you find a way around this?

  • New iMac with OS x Lion.  Printing envelopes w/ Address book makes a second blank envelope. Drivers up to date. Have to mark print only first page. Had no problem with Snow Leopard. How to correct.

I recently purchased a new iMac with OS x Lion. Previously was using a four year old iMac with snow Leopard. I have three HP printers with up to date drivers for Lion.  When I try to print an envelope from Address Book I have two problems:
    1) I have to change the orientation to vertical to get the proper margins, which I never had to do before and
    2) It prints a second blank envelope unless I tell it to only print the first page.
Neither of the problems occurred with my previous iMac/w Snow Leopard  and it appears to be a Lion/HP software incompatibility. I have worked with a Apple supervisor (Case # 316225300) for hours and finally reinstalled the operating system to no avail.
I do I correct both problems???

Contact HP and ask them to write better drivers for Lion. Find a printer that is more compatible with Lion. I've not printed envelopes with Lion before, though I've had no difficulty with either Epson Artisan 810 or Canon MX700 for regular printing.  Sometimes open source drivers also work better than manufacturer drivers.  See this FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
While many open source drivers won't give you duplex or printer diagnostics, at least they may work better for other features.
Lastly, I've often found for a more consistent print, saving as PDF, and then printing from Preview can sometimes be the best work around.  Someone in the Mac OS X Technologies forum might be able to help you write an automator script to do this in one fell swoop, if you find it works better for your needs.

  • Moving accounts from Snow Leopard Macs to Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server

I got my brand spanking new Mac mini today with Snow Leopard Server! So far, we (at home) were managing our accounts on individual iMacs and a MacBook Pro. While I will be getting into the innards of account migration, management etc. I thought I'd post a quick question here; Currently I have an iMac with three user accounts on it (wife and two kids). I also have my own personal MacBook Pro with my account (the only Admin account) on it. We'll soon be getting another iMac for our daughter (who currently has an account on the existing iMac). My idea in getting the Mac mini was to move to and centrally manage all the user accounts in the household on the Mac mini server. What is the best way to accomplish this? What is the best way to move the existing accounts on to the server?
Additionally, I'll be looking into connecting the two stationary iMacs with Powerline Ethernet (where one runs Ethernet over existing electrical wires in the walls). My other option would be to rely on wireless network (I don't think this would be a good idea for if I am going to be placing the user accounts on the server and there needs to be a constant on, reliable connection between the server and the client computers as they will be talking to each other a lot!). Any thoughts on Powerline? (I am not looking forward to installing Ethernet cabling behind walls :o))
What say the wise men of Mactopia?!
    Thanks,
    Kenneth.
P.S. I had earlier accidentally posted this in the corresponding section of Mac OS X instead of the Mac OS X Server forum.

Ok so the esiest way to explain this is to tell you what i just went through.
I have 3 user accounts. All the accounts are network Users meaning that there home folder are kept on the server. I was having a problem with Time Machine giving me error 41 and error 11. After scratching my head for 2 days I ended up copying (Drag-n-Drop) the Home Folders to an External Hard Drive. I then proceeded to erase both of the internal hard drives on the mac mini and did a fresh local install of the Server OS.
Everything was fine at that point. Now this is where Snow Leopard stopped being nice.
I went and Created the user account again using WGM. I let WGW create the home folder and the 9 folder inside. I made sure the short names were the same and the passwords were the same as they were previously.
However, once i Copied files from the external drive to the home folders the permissions copied as well, Which i guess should be expected. So now at this point apparently the UID's of the newly created users wasn't the same as they were before the clean install. I have multiple instances of root listed in the ACL for several folders and also had several instances of System listed sporadically.
Now, This isn't to say that you can't drag n drop because now That I have it all squared away and everything is now working ok, I would probably still drag n drop the home folder off to an external disk, but only because I now know what to do to clean things up.
if you drag and drop be sure to use the CHOWN command and theCHMOD commands afterwards. Take a look at this MacFixIt article: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20013630-263.html?tag=mncol;title
If you copy your local imac users to the home directory on the server you may want to follow the steps on the URL I gave plus you will most likely also have to do the following. In a nutshell you are going to use the chmod command to strip all the ACL Permissions then you are going to use the chown command to re-specify the correct owner and the correct permissions for the network user.
!) Go into ServerAdmin and click on Sharing
    2) Go to the users folder you are using and select the user you are going to work with.
    3) Click on the Permissions option
    4) click on the +sign at the bottom (this will open the users & groups list to the right)
    5) Drag the current user from the users list to the owner permissions line under posix section
    5a) Click Save
    6) Click on the Gear button at the bottom
    7) Check the box for Owner Name and Owner Permissions.
    8) Uncheck the box for Access Control List then click ok
Once you've gone through that rigmarole you can go back into ServerAdmin and fix the permissions for public and Sites folder which should only take a minute or so.
So the moral of this story and as I found out when i ended up calling Enterprise support is that the act of dragging and dropping user home directories from one server to another, or as in your case, from a local machine to a the server isn't anything that apple recommends or supports. you might want to read through the man pages for "Ditto" or so apple tells me, but honestly now that you know, the steps above aren't all that bad. It's true Knowing IS half the battle!
    have Fun!
P.S. FWIW If you run into problems and have to call Enterprise Support be prepared for them to tell you to refer to the user Guides. So reading those would be to your advantage even though they aren't the easiest things to understand unlike apple's consumer products user guides

  • Color separations with Snow Leopard?

Before installing Snow Leopard I was able to create PDF color separations by going to file > print. From there I changed the printer to Adobe PDF 9.0 and changed the Mode to Separations under Output. When the print button was pressed I would get a PDF file with all my CMYK and spot colors on separate pages in shades of black. This is the file I need to send to have negatives/plates made.
With Snow Leopard the print to PDF command no longer works. I can still use Save As PDF, but that would require me to manually remove all colors except one and then change that one to shades of black. That process would need to be repeated for every color used. Does anyone have a work around or better way to create color separations? I have contacted Adobe and have an open case working this problem. There is currently a bit of confusion because the individual at customer support thinks I am having trouble printing color separations when I am actually having trouble saving color separations using the print command.

    Here is the work around!
Print the file to a .ps and run it directly through Distiller  you will need to give Distiller your password.
That suggest to me that the problem is that distiller needs to pass word in order to save the file anywhere and not be able to do so without the password it just sends it back to the system after completing the distilling when you try to print to pdf.
Here is two of the four pages I got from my experiment
Not ideal work flow when you are doing a lot of them but much the same we are all use to doing it in the past.
Most important it is a way.

  • Can I use Palm Desktop 4.2.1 with Snow Leopard?

I had a Visor Pro, which unfortunately was stolen along with my Mac PowerBook G4.  I have ordered a new Mac laptop (MacBook Pro), but I am not going to be able to replace the Visor.
I want to be able to continue using the Palm Desktop application - I had version 4.2.1 for the Mac. I have 10 years of information in that program, I don't know one better and would like to continue to use it, Visor or no Visor.
    I have several questions:
Is Palm Desktop Version 4.2.1 for Mac compatible and will run on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard?
If I do a "migration assistant" to move my applications to the new computer from my backup harddrive, will the Palm program move over okay and be useable? Or,---
Do I have to install Palm Desktop from scratch?  If so, can I download Palm Desktop from the website - I cannot find a page anywhere on palm.com to download the program.  Does anyone have a link?
Or, is the Palm Desktop program that would work with Snow Leopard a different version than the 4.2.1 I have?  And if so, how do I upgrade/move my data from 4.2.1 to a newer version?
I don't need to be able to HotSync as I no longer have the Palm device.  I just want to be able to use the desktop software.
    Thanks for the help,
    Tara

    Tara,
I could have been you asking a very similar question, although I'm still not sure on the solution after some of the knowledgeable answers.
Like you, I have been using Palm Desktop to store 5 years of information, and I'm getting ready to buy the new iMac who reps tell me is probably not compatible with Palm Software anymore or will not and I should find other alternatives to store all my information.
For instance, I use Palm as my date book and To Do List which I find very convenient.  Apple reps told me I could try getting used to iCal for this which I have been doing lately to try & get used to it.
Then there are my addresses.  I also use Palm to store all my basic addresses (some with E-mail, some without).  It was recommended to me to just use the address book that comes with the iMac.  I've never used it but I can see in itself, it's easy to add addresses.  My computer consultant also told me that she could easily transfer the addresses from those on Palm to my Thunderbird which I use with Firefox.  So, if all my addresses were transferred from my Palm to Thunderbird, then I would just have them on Thunderbird, but I find it easier navigating them in Palm.
The last thing I use Palm for and the most important is under the menu of "Memos".  For each category, I have created an alphabetized subject, like computers, legal, passwords, shopping (about 30 topics) and when I want to save important information, I go to that category and write as much or as little as a reference.  I wondered "which" application I would use in order to create a similar way of looking up information on subjects.
I copied/pasted it all into a simple word document but that's not really made for what I want.
The last time I went to an Apple store and explained what I wanted -- they were the ones who suggested to use iMac addresses to store my Palm addresses, iCal to use as a new calendar and to do list, and finally an application (on the dock) called "E-mail" where I could do a similar thing as I did on my Palm by creating a series of categories, and when I click on it, a memo page comes up where I can type anything I want to related to that topic.  It was demonstrated to me, altho I forgot how she did it, but although it was not meant for a function like that, it's easily done as with the Palm.  I told my computer consultant this.
She was concerned that I may not be able to use my Thunderbird G-mail system if I have all my info in iMac applications.  Yet if the addresses are in Thunderbird as well, I can't see why that would interfer.
Anyway, today she sent me this link & question and I start reading about a "sync" application and I would have no problem.  They also mentioned software called Benno, but told me to try and use Apple apps first instead of having to go out and buy a whole new application to replace the functions of Palm.
Ideally, I would love to continue to use Palm Desktop as I'm using it on this desktop, but I'm  not clear if I can.  If I can't, what might be my best solution given what I wrote.  I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Trudijane

  • Is there a way to make Silverkeeper  work with Snow Leopard?

I use a computer "given" to me by my school. I do have administrative privileges, but IT installs all OS software and configures it per the network on campus. Last February, they installed Snow Leopard and I began to restore all my files from my external backup. I'd been using Silverkeeper for years, I prefer the way it works (basically, it copies all files, then, with subsequent backups, can be set to only update changed files and add new files into the backup. In other words, there is only one folder. As a designer, I have the "v1,v2" so deeply ingrained in me that I never loose the early versions of documents). In short, Silverkeeper works for me. Time Machine is an interface that does not.
So, IT installed Snow Leopard, I bring my machine home, and start bringing files over. For every single file, I had to type in my password. The drive, every folder and every document was suddenly marked as "Read Only". I tried changing permissions. Didn't stick. I repaired permissions, tried changing, still wouldn't take. I contacted IT, one of the guys opened Terminal and typed in something (he never gave me the line of code, so I can't tell you what he did. I asked him what he did, he just said, "It's ok, I just gave you full permission. Don't sweat it." I got home, tried to bring over some files, and they still asked for my password. Nothing had changed. Except that the machine started sending urgent error messages. I disconnected my hard drive, rebooted, and could not get past the grey screen.
Even longer story short, IT wiped my computer, reinstalled SL, I brought in my hard drives, they worked with them to have them all "Read Write" again, and said I had to use Time Machine as a backup. They blamed the entire mess on Silverkeeper.
So, the semester went on, I've been using TIme Machine ever since and I hate it. Hate it. I want my Silverkeeper, or some other such backup that gives me one file, and all my records kept in that file, in a visual manner. I hate these dates, with the multiple folders, and the threat that it will throw away old files (I just resurrected a file from a Quark doc made in 1994!). But IT has me too afraid to use Silverkeeper. Personally, I think something went wrong with the first install, then IT screwed it up even more by opening up Terminal and "fixing" the code, and they refuse to admit they have ever made a mistake. BTW, I've been using Macs for 22 years and have never experienced anything like this. I have done more system upgrades myself than I can remember, I have troubleshooted my own machines for years, and kept them humming beautifully.
It's summer, and I want a different backup. Please help, or let me know if I dare brave my old favorite once again. If there is a utility that I have to buy, I will. I'm so fed up and frustrated with the interface on Time Machine, I'm ready to go back to the bad old days of manual backups.

Are you using the latest version of Silverkeeper? - v.2.0.2 is stated to be compatible with Snow Leopard.

  • When I try to enter a time machine with Snow Leopard backups Lion I get an error code -6584 ... how to fix?

    Hi.
I had a first gen time machine with backups all on Snow Leopard.
This died (power supply), and I bought a new time capsule, because to fix the old one would cost nearly the same amount.
Since, I have started using Lion, and backed up onto my new time capsule in Lion.
Unfortunately, there was a file I deleted that I really need for a Logic Audio project, that is only present on the old time capsule.
I got the old time capsule fixed, so it powers up. I even extended my current wireless network with it. I can see inside it -- all the data that I dragged onto its HD in the past is present, and the "Sparse Bundle" containing the data for the time capsule save-states is present too.
Now, when I try to "Enter" my old time capsule, I get this error message:
I tried entering the time machine via WiFi and via ethernet, to no avail.
Can anyone help me to access these old save states on my old "snow leopard" time capsule?
I was thinking maybe I need to try to access it from a machine with Snow Leopard?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • App Store Pages no longer works on Snow Leopard after upgrade

I bought Pages (and Numbers and Keynote) from the App Store last summer. I have been using it on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) with no problems up until a few weeks ago. Since then I must have told  the App Store application to update all applications with updates (though I don't particularly remember doing that), and now when I attempt to open Pages I get a dialog box saying "You can't use this version of the application Pages.app with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mac OS X 10.6.8. The application requires Mac OS X 10.7.4". This is outrageous. How can a routine update of a App Store app stop it from working without any kind of warning? How do I revert to a version that will work on Snow Leopard? Don't just tell me that Pages isn't supported on Snow Leopard, because the version I bought last summer has been working just fine. Am I supposed to Google through pages and pages of information looking for warnings before I upgrade each application before updating? (I also own Aperture.) And what if I make a mistake and accidentally upgrade to a version that no longer works?

Which version of Pages 09 do you have? You don't need higher version than 4.0.4 on Snow Leopatd. Here you can download the iWork 9.0.4 update.

  • Mac Pro will not boot with Snow Leopard - need help!

I have had a lot of issues with Snow Leopard since I upgraded from 10.5.8. Most of my problems started after installing Office 2007. I finally wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything. No problems until last week. Start up was taking longer and had to reboot a couple of times because of grey screen. So I would just put computer to sleep. Yesterday the computer was frozen on screen saver with scrambled rows of pixels on screen two and the main monitor had a frozen image.
I initially pulled all peripherals out and pulled the power plug for 5 minutes. I have left the peripherals out and pulled the second monitor as well. I tried pulling the power plug during a few more starts but nothing gets me to a complete start up screen.
I have tried resetting PRAM and VRAM and tried a safe boot. I tried booting from Snow Leopard and my Leopard disk stayed on either a blue or gray screen with spinning beach ball (on gray screen).
Put original install disk in and booted from using D to check the hardware. Good news is that the hardware test was OK. I did the extended test.
All different kind of start up problems.
    - Some start with start up sound goes to Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with beachball
    - Some start ups with no initial sound then Apple logo to blue screen to grey screen with no cursor or beachball
    - Some start ups with no sound to gray screen to blue screen to grey screen.
I have no problem wiping the HD1 again but I can't even get the OS disk to be recognized with holding the C key during start up. This last time it went to a blue screen (holding the C key) and a cursor.
I don't know what else to do - Please help!!!

There are lists (MacIntouch and MacFixit) of hardware / software support issues with 10.6. Accelerateyourmac is another place to watch.
There were some really long threads back in Sept about printer driver support.
The 7300 firmware was more about Windows support; those cards are failing and dropping like flies (how DO they know 3 yrs has expired anyway?) and they don't support SL features like OpenCL etc so I'd invest in ATI 4870, best graphic card and works in all models Mac Pro.
Lots and lots of bootable clones for backup. Never need to wipe and install again.
