Pages requres OSX upgrade

Why would Apple do this?
It appears that Pages requires me to upgrade to OSX 10.10.
A colleague sent me a Pages document. When I try to open it, I am told I have to upgrade OSX (I assume to 10.10, it doesn't say explicitly). I'm already running 10.9.5.
This is not really a viable solution for me right now. I have some long term processes (read environmental models) actively running on my machine and I can't stop them just to upgrade the OS. Even if I could, forcing an upgrade of the OS just to read a Pages document is a broken approach.
Why would Apple do this?
Anyway, I'm done with iWork. It clearly is not a stable and reliable platform.
cheers,
Scott.

When Apple released Pages v5.5 for Yosemite, it could only write out one type of Pages document — a Package (folder). When written by Pages v5.5, this document was not backwards compatible with v5.2.2 on Mavericks. It would trigger that you need a newer version of Pages dialog.
With the v5.5.1 update, the default Pages document format is now a Single (compressed) File, not the Package format. This was done to address the complaints with incompatibility with non-Apple Mail agents and filesystems (e.g. Dropbox). However, this Single File format is also incompatible with Pages v5.2.2 on Mavericks — with the now familiar dialog.
In v5.5.1, Apple has now provided a way to dynamically alter the (already saved Single File document type) from the File menu. Using File > Advanced > Change File Type > Package, and the default Single File format transforms into a Package (folder) document. This Pages v5.5.1 document type is backwards compatible with Pages v5.2.2 on Mavericks. My preference is to follow this file type transition with a manual save. There is no preference setting to force Pages v5.5.1 to default to a Package type document format.
The Pages v5.5.1 Package File type still needs to be compressed (it is a folder after all) if Mailing it to someone using Mavericks, who must double-click on it to de-compress it for Pages v5.2.2 access. You may want to share this information with those that are sending you default Pages documents from Yosemite.

  • The OSX upgrade couldn't be started because the disk is damaged and can't be repaired.

I'm getting the above error message after trying many different "fixes" described on message boards.  Here's the issue: I have a Macbook Pro that developed a problem with an endless boot cycle.  The solution ended up being to wipe the drive using Disk Utility.  I then reinstalled OSX from a Snow Leopard disk, and the computer appeared to be working normally.  Then, when I attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from the App Store, I get this message when the computer tries to reboot and install the OS.  I have tried verifying and repairing the disk, resetting NVRAM/PRAM, resetting the SMC...but always I get the following error message:
    Install Failed
OSX could not be installed on your computer
The OSX upgrade couldn't be started because the dis Macintosh HD is damaged and can't be repaired
Curious if anyone has experienced this problem or has a possible fix.  Thanks for your help

I did not verify/repair from Snow Leopard...simply reinstalled then attempted to download/install Mavericks from the App Store.  Having seen this suggestion, I've now rebooted into recovery mode, and when I try to verify/repair, it aborts both processes and I get the respective errors:  "The volume couldnot be verified completely" and "Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."

  • Where can I purchase the serial number for Iworks, or purchase Pages for OSX 4.11? Thanks very much force for your help! Andrea

    Hi,
Where can I purchase the serial number for Iworks, or purchase and download Pages for OSX 4.11?
Thanks so much in advance for your help!
    Andrea

You can search Google, eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist to find an old version of iWork for a PPC Mac. Probably needs to be iWork 6 or earlier.

Thanks for that.  I did as suggested but when I tried again, it still did not work.  Another  com.apple.Grab.plist appeared in the Library.
I now have the following files in Library

  • I did have the ability to "save" in PAGES. I upgraded to "Mountain Lion", and now I can not "Save". Help please!

I used to be able to "Save" my material in PAGES. I upgraded to "Mountain Lion" and now when I go to "Save", it says "permission denied". How can I correct this?
    <E-mail Edited by Host>

Several users have had this problem in Mountain Lion. The system has decided you don't have read/write permissions. Have you done any updates to your system lately? Using Disk Utility to repair permissions after any upgrade or update, especially to the system, is a good practice. So first, I would repair permissions & then if you still have the problem, locate the file in Finder & go to File > Get Info & look in the Sharing & Permissions section. You should be the only one with read/write permissions but something has happened. Click on the words under "priveledge" next to your name & change it to read & write. You will probably have to enter your admin password.

  • OSX Upgrade and new software purchases slow down Mac and Battery won't hold charge?

    Any assistance appreciated:
I have recently upgraded my OSX from Snow Leopard, which I was quite happy with, and was ticking over very nicely.
    And, today, I have problems???
I was using Snow Leopard, I purchased Mainstage 2 for my musical work... Nice piece of Kit..
I then notice 'Apple', bring out Mainstage 3 about 10 days later???
I check out the spec, will not run on my OSX...
I then check out Mainstage 3 and find that it would be a better version than 2..
I then decide that the extra stuff in Mainstage 3 is worth the price of an OSX upgrade, and the newer Mainstage 3 version although I had recently purchased Ver 2..
I do the upgrade, seems to have worked fine...
I purchase Mainstage 3, get that installed, and the Xtra's.... What is that all about?
It took me well over 12 hrs to get those...
Any road up, I get everything installed and functioning....
    Now, my Mac is Slllooooow..
The Battery will not hold it's charge... Runs for only 2 hours MAX and then needs recharging???
The MacBook was bought only 18 month ago??? 2011 edition..
I have an IBM ThinkPad 240 and it still holds more charge than my Mac....
    Help appreciated Folks...
For the dosh I have paid to 'Apple', the product and software should operate and function better than this???
And to honest, I aint spending anymore, until 'Apple' give me some answers on my problems.
Peace, Love n Laughter Cap Reg

That box definitely needs an additional graphics card to run Aperture. I seem to remember the Nvidia 8800 GT as the one to get (~$60 at Amazon) but you need to verify that it will work in that old G5 because my recall could be faulty.

Must I change my entire computer to Spanish to write Spanish documents in pages for OSX-Lion?

If part of your issue has to do with Spanish-language accents, here's a guide (works everywhere in the Mac OS, not just within iWork):
    OPTION-e and tap a vowel gives you the acute accents  á é í ó ú
OPTION-n and tap n  gives you the  ñ
OPTION-1 gives you the inverted exclamation mark  ¡
OPTION-SHIFT- / gives you the inverted question mark  ¿

  • I had my OSX upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 at the Apple store.  Shouldn't I have received along with that a newer version of iPhoto, iTunes, etc.?

    Hi, I'm new here.
I had my OSX upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 at the Apple store.  Shouldn't I have received along with that a newer version of iPhoto, iTunes, etc.?
    Thanks.

If there is an upgrade to any of macs products that you own they will notify you when there is an update. To check if you have any updates go to the app store and click on "Updates", or open the program you want to check and click the "check for update" option in the dropdown menu. Hope this helps.

If you have iWork 09, then the latest version should be available for free in the Mac App Store. If you have the new version on your iPad, then you'll need the new version on your Mac as well. The whole point of the latest version is that you can access and edit your files equally on iPad/iPhone, Mac, and also through the iCloud website.

  • Macbook OSX upgrade to 10.6.8 troubles

    Hello,
I have a Macbook I recently upgraded to OSX 10.6.8. It has 1GB of RAM and 2.1 intel duo. Ever since I upgraded I have been having several issues. The computer will completely freeze if left unused for more than 10 minutes. I was also having an issue with Safari freezing.....it would not allow you to type anything in the search or address bars. I downloaded Chrome thinking that would solve the problem, but the same thing happened.....the address bar became unresponsive after a while. Scrolling the page up and down still worked, but could not click on anything in the page or type.
There have been several other things as well.....mostly involving programs freezing up .
Does anyone know what this could possibly be? I have been searching online and have yet to find a solution that works. The Apple Genius suggested I wipe out the drive and start from scratch.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

You could first check the hard drive with Disk Utility while booted from the install disc, and if it seems OK go along with the suggestion of installing the software again.
