Pages: this location is read-only, ? Help

This occurred after having a new OS X installed. I wish to be able to simply save documents & create folders as I'm doing so.

I also have this problem and have read/write permissions on the folders it occurs in. It is only since I have upgraded to Maverick that this problem occurs, so it is probably not Pages problem.
For example, sometimes, when I try to save a copy or a PDF in Pages, it tells me that the volume I am trying to save to will not accept a file name of more than 32 characters. Even when I change to less than 32 characters or remove any symbols from the filename, it will not allow it. The work around is to save to desktop and then move the file but is a little annoying.
This problem occurs also when trying to save attachments from Email, so is unlikely to be a Pages problem but seems like a set of Maverick' bugs. Any inspiration if the two things might be connected?

    Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

  • MS Word: This file is read-only. To save a copy, click OK, and give the document a new name in the save dialog box.

    This is not a question. I believe I've found a new issue and the fix for it.
    The situation:
    A brand new iMac 27" running Yosemite 10.10.1
    MacMini server running 10.8.5 server.
    The issue:
    Client on iMac trying to work on MS Word documents stored on server was requiring him to save the documents to his desktop and then copy them back to the folder on the server. The exact error message was, "This file is read-only. To save a copy, click OK, and give the document a new name in the save dialog box."
    The issue is unique to this computer in an office of 10 client computers and three servers.
    Attempted fixes:
    Verified that the ".Temporaryitems" folder existed and the permissions were set properly.
    Repaired permissions on the client and the network share.
    Definitive fix:
    By default, Yosemite 10.10.1 uses SMB for connecting file shares. When I overrode the default and switched to AFP protocol, the issue went away.
    I hope this helps someone else.

    That was it. What an operating system. It is very helpful to view files you are looking for. But if you have preview on you cannot save files.

    Drive Partition and Format
    1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Kinit mounts root filesystem as read only [HELP][solved]

    hello
    I've being messing around with my mkinitcpio trying to optimize my boot speed, i removed some of the hooks at the beginning i couldn't boot, but then now i can boot but the root filesystem mounts as read only, i tried everything my fstab looks fine, / exists with defaults i tried to mount it referencing by it's uuid or by it's name and i get the same results, it mounts the filesystem as root only all the time no mather what i do.
    There is not logs since i started playing with mkinitcpio, or anything i searched everywhere in this forum and around the internet, and i can't find any solution that would work, i restored all the hooks and modules on mkinitcpio and the result it's still the same. i also changed the menu.lst in grub to vga=773 but that's about it.
    Can anyone help with this please i can't seem to boot properly.

    Hello
    Basically what happens it's that it loads all the uDev events then the loopback, it mounts the root read only, then when it checks filesystems it says
    /dev/sda4: clean, 205184/481440 files, 1139604/1920356 blocks [fail]
    ************FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the will *
    * reboot automatically. *
    Now what bugs me its that i can do that mount -n -o remount,rw / with no problems and when i do
    e2fsck -f /dev/sda4
    it doesn't return any errors just says that 0.9 non continuous.
    none of this makes sense to me!! thats why i though that the problem could be coming from mkinitcpio or something
    any ideas
    Thanks for your help, btw thanks for the quick reply

  • External Drive Permissions Locked to Read ONLY - HELP!

    Hello:
    I have recently moved from a powerbook to an imac. The external I used with the powerbook was working fine until I began to use it with the imac. Once I hooked it up to the imac, I only had read permissions. I have never set any of the permissions on the disk and have always left it open. Thinking it was just the imac, I plugged it back into the pb, to find it was also appears locked to read only. I have gone through the web looking for solutions and I cannot seem to find a solution.
    When I open get info about the disk, under sharing and permissions, its says "you can only read"
    under the list of name: wkim has read and write privlige, staff and everyone get read only. I am wkim, so what gives? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    ok. my problems were probably not related and were fixed by reinstalling 10.5.2 with the Combo Updater found on (www.apple.com/downloads)...this probably won't help you but won't hurt so may be worth a try...
    your permission problems probably have something to do with user IDs changing from one machine to the next. Try first to "repair permissions" with Disk Utility on your main HD. you can also go to Terminal and navigate to the problem directory and enter "ls -ln" to see what user ID and group ID own the files. then type just "id" to see what your local ID is. if they don't match then you'll probably need to change them with chown or chgrp.
    hopefully someone else will chime in here as 10.5 has created convoluted permission problems and I still haven't worked out my own...

  • Mail attachments won't save - saying folders are Read Only

    Every time I try save an attachement, mail pops up saying this location is read-only,
    Any help?

    I still can't fix this issue.
    This is what happens when I try to create a new folder in the target folder that I want to save my attachments too. The target folder has Read & Write access for everyone.
    I've tried:
    Accessing Repair Utilities and typed in resetpassword
    Resetting the permissions on my computer
    Relaunch Finder
    But so far nothing works and I still get the Read Only error message when trying to create a new folder to save my attachments.
    UPDATE:
    I've used these steps by Linc Davis, who is like a savior for everything Mac!

  • Locking a subset of Wiki pages as read-only: Is this possible?

    I have a workspace setup where all participants have workspace-member role privilege which allows them to update content - and in particular - wiki pages. This is a business requirement for this particular site purpose.
    However - I would like to lock down one (or more) wiki pages within the pages on this workspace - as read-only.
    Is it possible to have some pages within a workspace locked as read-only to named users - while the other wiki pages are available for update to workspace participants? If so - how?
    Thank you

    Hi,
    No, we cannot selectively lock down Wiki pages as read only unfortunately as we don't have access controls at the individual page level.
    However, what may be doable is for you to flag the page as non-changeable and to set up an RSS feed to the Wiki page and if anyone changes it you can go in an look at who did it and more importantly you can roll it back to the previous version as the change logs will be kept and can be backed out if required. There is an entry here: http://weblog.oraclecorp.com/weblog/team/Beehive that shows how to set up specific RSS feeds.
    Not ideal but a possible way of catching any unauthorized change and correcting it + giving you the culprit :-)

  • Read Only Display Settings Help

    Hello,
    I am trying to control what some users can see in a page. Right now I have an item field (Roles) display as checkbox. Roles is a field in my table that I created with RolesA, RolesB, RolesC. Note: these are not htmldb roles.
    In my Edit Page Item --> Read Only Display Settings --> Read Only Condition Type --> PL/SQL Function Body Returning a Boolean. Under Expression 1, I coded:
    return not htmldb_util.current_user_in_group(p_group_name => 'APP Admin')
    I want this item to read-only unless the user happens to be a member of group 'APP Admin'.
    The expression is not working. It seems that no matter what user is logged in they can modify this item. Is there another way I can do this for controlling what my RolesA, RolesB, and RolesC can modify? BTW, this item is a checkbox.

    Dung,
    That API seems to have a bug, it returns true/false/null, so you could use 'return not nvl(htmldb_util.current_user_in_group(p_group_name => 'APP Admin'),false)' to get a false value.
    Unfortunately there's another problem: using the read-only attributes for checkbox or radiogroup item makes them hidden. My suggestion would be to create another item that has disabled="disabled" in the HTML Form Element attribute in the item definition and display that item or the non-disabled item alternately, using conditions based on the current_user_in_group logic.

  • Lookups read-only

    Hi
    I generated a form with jheadstart, this have a table read-only with many lookups. When I execute the page, it is very slow, I analize the page and saw that the lookups generate a <select > and <option> for all the values of the lookup, my table is read-only, I don't need all the values of the lookup, only one, the displayed. The page have a lot of lookups and the page is very big with all the information. How can I revolve it?
    Thans in advance
    Liceth

    Liceth,
    Your lookups are of type 'choice'. This means that all possible options are generated into the JSP page, even though the input item is set to be read-only. This way we can show a display value that is different from the underlying value (id, foreign key) attribute.
    If you don't need all the options in your JSP page because it is read-only, the best workaround is to remove the lookups from the Application Structure File, and to make sure that the display values of the lookups are included in the base View Object of the group. How to do this is described in the JHeadstart Developer's Guide, chapter 3: JHeadstart Application Generator, section 'Generating User Interface Widgets' - 'Generating List of Values' - 'Add attributes from other Entities to a View object'.
    After having tested in the ADF BC Tester that the right values are shown in the View Object, you can change the Custom JHeadstart properties of the View Object to set Display?=false for the underlying value (id, foreign key) attributes that you don't want to show in the page. Then run JHeadstart Application Generator again, and the page should be a lot faster!

  • Bug? Folders created by transmission is read-only to Windows file sharing

    It's a nice thing that transmission is supported in the LenovoEMC version of firmware. The thing is, folders created by this transmission are read-only, which means file can't be added, deleted nor modified from Windows file sharing (They are still be deleted with transmission though, but that's irrelavant).
    From my experience, this issue is caused by the value of unmask not properly set up in the settings.json file. This file can be modified when transmission is not running, but I didn't find a way to stop transmission from running / restart itself even after being killed from SSH.
    Please help.

    You have to have root access (which will void your warranty) to modify settings.json, that's why I wish Lenovo can come up with an official solution.
    If you don't mind viod the warranty, then after you stop transmission, you can log in as root via putty, then use nano to modify settings.json as mentioned below:

  • Render column read only after save in advanced table.

    I have advanced table in my region. Right now, I have col1 & col2 both messageinputtext and adding new row works,
    This is what I want to do :
    When page loads, render col1 read only, (right now it pulls in data, with col1 as text field, I dont want the user to change data in col1, once he has saved it)
    When user presses addRow button in table footer, it adds a row with col1 as input field, but when user is done inputting and clicks 'apply changes' button , col1 in all the rows become read only.
    how can I do it programatically ?
    thanks

    Now You have to capture the logic of AddRow button. Say you are handling its logic in AMImpl.
    PFR of Controller:-->
    processFormRequest
    if ((table.Bean.getName().equals(source)) && (ADD_ROWS_EVENT.equals(event)))
    // invoke method on view instance that will add 5 rows
    In AMimpl:-
    if (vo.getFetchedRowCount() == 0)
    // We want to initialize the VO with the call to setMaxFetchSize()
    // only before we add the first row. If we add subsequent rows,
    // we don't want to call this again, which is way it's enclosed
    // in the IF check.
    vo.setMaxFetchSize(0);
    // Perform insert
    Row row = vo.createRow();
    vo.insertRow(row);
    // If this view object is transactional, you must also comply with
    // Model Coding Standard M69 by setting the new row state to
    // STATUS_INITIALIZED. Note that there is no harm in including
    // this line of code in non-transactional view objects if you
    // find it easier to follow a single coding pattern for all your
    // view objects.
    row.setNewRowState(Row.STATUS_INITIALIZED);
    vo.reset();
    vo.next();
    Here try to do like this
    OARow row = (OARow)vo.getCurrentRow;
    OAViewObject pVO = (OAViewObject)findViewObject("macsfaqPVO1");
    OARow poRow = (OARow)pVO.getCurrentRow();

    Saving the file as read-only does not mean you cannot make changes, it merely means it is recommended that you open this file as read-only. Also using 'xlWorkbookNormal' is incorrect since this is basically the macro-free xml format. Use the 'xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled'
    instead. Now as far as not allowing the user to make changes you will need to protect each worksheet, as well as protect the workbook. So something like
    Sub ProtectWorkbook()
    ThisWorkbook.Protect Structure:=True, Password:="test123"
    Dim sh As Worksheet
    For Each sh In ThisWorkbook.Worksheets
    sh.Protect Password:="Test1234"
    Next sh

  • Continuous 'read-only' message Word

    Dear all,
    I am new to this community and have tried looking for an answer to my question (e.g. Shared Excel/Word files corrupting/becoming read only on 10.9.1 Server, 3.0.2), but as I am not a computer buff at all, I didn't understand whether encountered topics applied to my question, let alone understand the answers.. So here goes!
    Working on my thesis (a 917 KB document), my Word document has started to give a similar error every 5-10 minutes, saying: "this file is read-only. To save a copy, click OK, and give the document a new name in the Save dialog box" (Word Work File A_ ...... asd). I've tried this many times, but the error keeps on popping up, regardless of whether I save the document to a memory stick or to my hard drive. Any clues on what might cause it and how I could solve it? Kind of afraid this will cause problems at some point (and in any case, the continuous errors are quite annoying..).
    I am working on a MacBook Air, 2012, OS X Mavericks version 10.9.4, Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 version 14.0.0.

    Thanks for your reply CT!
    I hadn't in fact - but have now .
    Also found a thread that my problem may be related to an excess of left-over temp files.. but am not sure that's the case, and also not sure how to remove them on a Mac (found this: http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm, but it applies to Windows users).. I have deleted my history (incl. cookies and buffer) in Firefox now, but it has not made a difference, so I don't think it helped.. Conclusion: still very happy with any tips/advice! Cheers!
