Pages vs Quark/InDesign/Pagemaker

I have a friend who has been using Pagemaker on a PC for several years in his business. He now wants to switch to a Mac. As I go over his options the cost of new software has been a deal-buster (Quark - $700, Creative Suite - $1000).
I wonder if iWork might get him by. He builds 8-up "cards" on 8.5" x 11" sheets in Pagemaker. Is this something that could be done in Pages - does it use text blocks like Quark and InDesign?
Also: What are the "Advanced image tools"? Are these image editing tools such as those in Photoshop?

Answer to my own question:
I downloaded iWork 08 and gave Pages a look. It's much the same as Appleworks and seems that it would be Appleworks had they chosen not to repackage it as Pages.
It's nice - feels like a 100% Apple (corporation) program. The interface is cool and the functions provided are nice - where else are you going to get drop shadows and linked text boxes with run-around for $79. It has great navigation for positioning elements. It smokes Word by a mile for 99% of what most people buy Word for (not doctorial theses).
I'm sure that lots of wonderful work will be produced with this program. If you plan to build jobs for electronic distribution via pdf or print to a desktop printer it's great.
But, it's not useable in in the real graphic arts production world because:
No support for Pantone colors or spot colors.
Type manipulation is non existent - no scaling or kerning. You can’t set leading (it uses line spacing). No space before or after and so on.
No control of graphic files once they are imported. Are they imbedded? It converts Illustrator eps files to pdf on import.
I wish I had bought it instead of Microsoft Office but I'll have to stick with Quark and InDesign - I will recommend it for my friend.

Is it possible to convert a Pages document into Adobe InDesign?

I'm wondering the same thing, since I just bought iWork '05 because of the cool layouts. I use PageMaker in Classic mode and have slowly buy surely, made the move to InDesign CS.
With Pages now in the picture, I'd like to know that info, which can't be found easily on Google. If Pages works with InDesign.
The only thing I know is that you can make PDFs of your designs and import them into your InDesign document all ready to go. (Since you're already using Pages to create your designs, makes sense to do everything that you need to do there, and then import it as a PDF, all packaged up into InDesign. If you want to do designs in InDesign, do everything there).

How can I make a page transparent in InDesign CS4?

Hello and thank you all for your help in advance!
I would like to make a page transparent in InDesign.
When the magazine is printed it will be an overlay page with font printed on it where you can still see the image underneath. I was wondering if this is possible.
I'm not quite sure if it has a technical name to it or not so I uploaded a picture of what I'm speaking about to Tinypic.

will these subjects actually be printed on separate pages or do you want to overlay some images on one page with type on the same page?
If the former, add and use layers; if the latter design one page and save it as a pdf. Place that pdf on a lower level layer, lock the layer, and work on a higher layer.

How do I move a page or delete a single page in CS6 indesign are keep format?

I created a 75 page book in InDesign CS6. The template had double-sided right and left facing pages, each with a black border and page number in the center bottom of the page.
As an experienced InDesign user, I had very few challenges putting the document together. Once completed, I edited the images and attempted to rearrange some. I traded some even numbered pages with odd numbered ones. I added a few pages and deleted others. Then I discovered that many of the pages were not formatted correctly. Numbers were no longer in the center. Borders framed only 2/3 of pages, shifting right or left onto the pasteboard.
After careful study, I discovered that everytime a single page was moved, all the subsequent pages were formatted incorrectly. If two successive pages were moved together, formatting remained appropriate.
I called Adobe for support. I called over and over again. The first level of support required me to describe the problem. The low level support was repeatedly stumped. After considerable time on the phone, they escalated the case and told me someone at the next level would call me back within 72 hours. This happened 3 times. I was never called back within 72 hours. I was called back a week after my third call when I was several hundred miles from my computer and the nearest WiFi. I was given yet another 72 hour window in which I was supposed to sit by my phone and wait for a call. Again no one called.
I called again and again. I explained my problem over and over. At this point, after being cutoff three times this afternoon and once this morning, I have come to the conclusion that not only does Adobe have no way to solve this problem, they lack the courtesy to tell me so.
I am using a Macbook Pro, previously with 10.7+ and now with system 10.8+. The error is clearly in the program. I have a clumpsy way to do what I want but I can only put in page numbers page by page.

This link shows a page from a longer document and the misplacement of Master page set-up. Note that some pages have correct border and number placement while others do not. The border extends beyond the page onto the pasteboard.

How to Add a page Item in Indesign Library Panel

I am trying to add page Item in Indesign Library Panel using
ILibraryCmdUtils::ProcessLibraryAddItemCmd()
But it shows the message of Heap corrupt while processing the commmand.
Can any one help me out with some code snippet ?

I doubt it will do graphics and layout, but maybe, depending on your version of Indesign you may hit lucky (but probably not).

I would also recommend to write the description into the meta data. This would allow to place a text frame above the image and it is possible to add meta information and file name automatically together with the image, when you place it or even in a prepared template.
Meta data information can be written easily in Bridge in the Meta File Workspace.

In the source file open the pages panel and select the page(s) you want to copy, from the panel menu choose move page(s), and select the destination file and specify a position.

Hey Peter, if I wan to move several page that part of Auto Flow text, I checked the "delete page after moving" but the content still there, not deleted.
Is there any way to delete it automatically, just to make sure I have moved that autoflowed page?

Mac/Windows INDD files are totally compatible. It’s the version number you need to be aware of, not the platform.
Speaking of which, InDesign 5 is CS3 and INDD files are not backward compatible.

I have create 5 pages catalog in indesign CS3 & i need to shift one Group From One page to another...can anybody help me to do this issue.
what i have tried is.......

using this code group is pasting on page 3 again again. coz my screen is displaying page 3 it's not scrolling to page 4.......when i scroll to page 4 manually then it works. so the issue is how to scroll or how to activate perticular page on screen......plzz help me to do this......or is there any other way to solve this...

Placing a multiple page PDF into InDesign

I have CS5. I'm working on a multipage document in InDesign and I want to bring in a multipage PDF document into that InDesign document. For some reason, when I do File>Place, it brings in the first page of the PDF (with perfect formatting) but the other pages do not come in. Is there some other setting that I'm missing to capture all pages of the PDF to transfer into the same number of pages in my InDesign document?

No, there is no such option. Steve's suggestion does pop up a dialog so you can select page 2, page 3, etc. -- and even "all" -- but InDesign does not create the pages for you, as it does with text.

The "page items" collection gives you the objects in their stacking
order, so the index of the item in the collection will be the
placement in the stacking order.

Resize a multiple page document in Indesign CC

How do you resize a multiple page document in Indesign CC so the content stays centered.
If I do it from Document Setup it resizes from the top left.
This use to work from Indesign CS6.

Try using the Page tool and the Liquid Layout Re-center rule.
You'll need to either select all the document pages or the master pages you want to resize. When those pages are selected, enter your new page size and choose Re-center from the Liquid Layout menu.
It's worked for me on pages I've tested.
