Pages won't open a Word doc

I saved a Pages '09 version 4.0 document as Word on my wife's MacBook Air, OS 10.6.8.  I now get an error message saying that Pages can't open this document.  It will open in TextEdit, why not in Pages?

Apple has the iWork 9.1 updater if you are on OS X 10.6.8, or Lion (10.7.3 or less). The iWork 9.3 updater requires OS X 10.7.4 or later, and provides the last update to the iWork '09 DVD applications (e.g. Pages v4.3, Numbers 2.3, and Keynote 5.3).

  • How do I set Pages to automatically open all Word (.doc) documents?

Being a relatively new Mac User, I haven't yet figured out how to associate programs with particular file types.
How do I set Pages to automatically open all Word (.doc) documents?
    Thanks.

    Hello Argelius
If you select a word file in the Finder and do File>Get Info you will see a section in there where you can specify which application should be used to open files of that type.

  • IMac won't print microsoft word doc "open with" apple pages

When its set to open with pages it just freezes the pages program and wont print. If I set it to open with textedit or some other program then it will print. Note, if I open it first with pages then it will print from within pages. It just wont print using file > print from the apple menu. Whats the fix for this? Currently I have it set to open all word docs in LibreOffice in order to print docs with ease. But I would rather use apple pages app.

I felt i had to come to help you if your problem was not solved.
I've a customer who just came up with this problem.  He is using Office 2003 on Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bits.  He is using also a Color LaserJet 2600n.  We just reinstalled his software on a new computer and we started experiencing "Current Printer Is Unavailable" in Excel.  When trying to access Page Setup, it was also giving us that same message, and
then we had a dialog listing every computer available.
We produced a PDF, tried to print from Acrobat Reader, it crashed too the same way you mentionned.
    Here's what happenned:
We first installed the driver available from HP web site
    We did some updates from Microsoft Web Site.  There was an optional hardware update for the LaserJet 2600n, so we installed it.  This update is completely {Language Filter Evasion}
Uninstall your printer driver (well, just remove it from your printer list)
Then reinstall it.  In our case, it was accessed thru IP.
When it was installing, it asked us to keep the same driver or REPLACE the driver...  pick-up REPLACE the driver!
And you are good to go...

  • If i upgrade from pages 2.0.2 to pages 4.1 will i be able to open older word docs on lion

Before I buy pages 4.1 I was just checking that I be able to open older word docs, since installing lion we have not been able to open older word docs. Many Thanks

Test by yourself with the documents which you wish to open.
Dowload the free 30 days trial iWork from :
    http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/
    install it,
apply the updaters then test it during 30 days.
An other scheme which costs nothing is to download the free LibreOffice.

I imported and opened a word doc to pages.  When I went to edit all I got was highlighted boxes of text....no cursor or keyboard.  How do I edit an imported doc in Pages?

No, it's a document I created and it's not locked.   I did it at work and sent it to Pages so I could work at home.   It opens but I can't type or edit.

If you have not already done so, repair permissions and restart your computer.  Or boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.  When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer. Suggest that you post in the Microsoft Office for Mac Forums if the above does not work.

  • When opening a word doc in pages i am loosing the graphic images from powerpoint that were embedded in the word doc

When opening a word doc in pages i am loosing the graphic images from powerpoint that were embedded in the word doc

Are the images placed in a table? Many Word user have the habit of doing that. Tables are not handles the same way in Word and Pages so they get "hidden" in Pages. One way to find this out is to change the size of the paper of the document. You do that in the Page setup in the file menu. Create a document that is much longer that the default one and see if you images will pp up.

  • Installed iWork '09 on MacBook running OSX 10.7.2 and Pages won't open .doc files. Why?

I just recently installed iWork '09 on MacBook running OSX 10.7.2 and Pages won't open .doc files.
I did a search looking for a solution in the forums and here are the actions I've taken:
    1) Made sure the files were't read/write protected.
    2) Restarted the computer.
    3) Made sure all the program files were in the correct folder.
    4) Reinstalled the program.
Pages won't read .doc files that were originally Pages files and exported as .docs
It also won't read .doc files that were created using a relatively recent version of Office.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
    Please help.

If it's a doc created with the late Office 2011, it's not really surprising.
The importer embedded in iWork application was delivered in january 2009 and didn't evolve.
For this reason, it's unaware of new features delivered with Office 2011.
    Better try with LibreOffice.

  • Opening a Word doc

Hello all, I am new to Flex.  I have some experience with AS3 (still switching over from AS2).
Anyway, I am making a Flex project where I have a text link in a datagrid.  This link needs to open a word document that is on our company network.  Currently I'm working on my own personal computer on my C drive (not sure if that affects anything - when i hit Run does it run the application from my C drive? It should still work from there i'd think?)  We have a bunch of other drives on our network, and the word doc I'm trying to open is on a "P:" drive.
I'm not sure what I might be doing wrong, but I created a LinkButton and tried 2 different attempts at opening a Word doc.
I tried creating a new URLRequest and navigateToURL to attempt to open the word doc - nothing happens when I click the link. The link button will launch google if i replace my word doc path with the google url.
I tried sending the file path to javascript via ExternalInterface and having javascript open it up.  It doesn't work that way either.
Is there something I should know about opening up a Word doc file with Flex? Or possibly is it not working because of where the file resides?  Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    -Michele

Actually, no and yes. No you do not have to re-save all of your Word files. It depends on what you want to do with them.
The file you have open is actually a Pages file which was created by converting the old Word file (which has not been altered at all). If you want to keep it and any changes you have made as a Pages file, you must "save as." The next time you open that file, it will open naturally in Pages. Every time you open the original Word file, since it has not been converted to native Pages, it will go through the same translating process as it did this time.

    ted39 wrote:

Please elaborate on what exactly you mean by it "won't open".
Do you try to launch it and get an error message from the Finder (for example, something like "This application is damaged and cannot be launched....")? Does an icon for the application ever appear in the Dock when you try to launch it? Does it start to launch and then immediately crashes (Finder will display an "unexpectedly quit" dialog)? Or does it start to launch and never seems to "finish" launching (in other words, it basically hangs and is unresponsive)?
If the application crashes, please post the contents of the crash log here.
Otherwise, if the application seems to be hanging, can you, before attempting to launch it, open the Console.app application (it's in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder), and see if anything is reported when you attempt to launch it? If so, please post it here.

  • How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?

How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?
I have files I made with Pages and exported as PDF but I can't open them with pages to edit?
Also, where are the recent files created by pages located? Can't find those to open either..

    Hi Tom,
I was delighted when I signed up for Pages. Clunky yes, but it worked. I've been a graphic designer on a Mac for 25 plus years and have logged too many horror stories of "upgrade" wars which cost me massive lost time, data and money forcibly extracted just so I could finish a project.
When I first used Pages in April of 2012? or there about, I was able to open Word documents exported to .pdf format, emailed to me, which I then dragged into Pages. I could make the changes I needed to make, export as a .pdf, return it back to my client which they could then edit on whatever it was they were using. I'm not a neophyte with this. I've had Original Photoshop as a stand alone, Quark (which locked users out 6 months after I purchased it.) Quark again, Freehand, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Photoshop again, Creative Suite for several upgrades, Acrobat Pro. 2 years ago I lost 6 years of Quicken data and had to and "upgrade" start over. This last go around I  had to "upgrade" my Apple ID - yes I had 2 on purpose, lost my Pandora One and my ability to get into the Tulsa County Library website.
At this point, I'm retired and feel like what I've paid for in the past should WORK today. I have a 100+ page cookbook in Quark which I was able to export as a .pdf, that I've lost the tags too, Easier to start over. I have artwork that is hundreds of megs in Photoshop. Not the least bit interested in anybody's "cloud".
Thanks for letting me vent. I'm determined to keep my equipment and software up to date so I can enjoy the skills I've acquired, but I completely cringe at Apple's antics. I truly hate it when I have to respond to some new "tip" or product offer. BooHiss. Happy Turkey Day. Pages is a "turkey" program.
    Best regards, mbd

I have a brand new macbook pro 15" with latest Lion. Can anyone tell me why, when I open word or preview etc that multiple files open? For eg if I open a word doc, the last 1-3 docs that I have worked previously on all open. Can anyone tell me why?

You have a choice as to whether or not applications in Lion like Word or Preview (or even Safari) save and re-open previous documents or windows... just hold down the option key while quitting a program and when you re-open it you won't get the previous documents or windows when you re-open the application. You can see this by selecting the open program in the menu bar and when holding down the option key the quit function will change to quit and discard open windows. This feature in Lion is referred to as "Resume" and is great if you want to restart an app and return to what you're doing (for example in Safari re-opening existing windows and tabs from your previous session). You still have the option to close individual windows within an app before quitting and they will not re-open when the app is launched again.
This Resume function is not related to saving your work (a word or text document for example). This is handled by Lion's "Auto-Save" and "Versions" functions. See http://www.apple.com/ca/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html
Hopefully this is the complete answer you're looking for.

  • Opening MS Word docs in Yosemite

Just purchased a lovely new iMac running Yosemite.   All old files transferred without a hitch.   However none of my Word docs will open.   Message appears "You can’t open the application “Microsoft Word” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
Do I need additional software to open my assorted MS Word docs?   Surprisingly, Numbers converted an Excel spreadsheet perfectly.
Was previously running a Mac with Snow Leopard and MSWord 2004 for Mac (version 11.6.6)
Hope you can be of help.
    Kim

    Many thanks Kaufman
You've confirmed my suspicions.   Cost isn't a big issue, am happy to purchase the latest Office for Mac if that makes editing incoming Word docs easier.
I'm interested in your mentioning Pages will open a Word document and, presumably convert it to a Pages doc.   It was a doddle with an Excel spreadsheet, just dropped it onto the Numbers icon , et voila!   Pages just kept spitting the Word docs out!
    Thanks again
    Kim

  • Latest version of Pages won't open documents created in previous version.

Pages won't open documents created before update.

I got the same issue, here is what it says now: "My document" can’t be opened."
    iOS Mavericks 10.9.2
    Pages 5.1
What I did to get this issue:
    - My file was created a month ago in Pages 5.1
    - Today, I opened the file normally
    - I clicked "duplicate" in order to make a back up from the current version
    - The loading wheel kept running for a few minutes...Maybe my cache memory too busy?
    - so, I "forced to quit" Pages
    - I try to open my doc again in Pages 5.1, now it's a failure!!
    - Then i tried to open on another Macbook with Pages 5.1 = Failure
    - I updated Mavericks latest updates = Failure to open my doc
    - Try to open in pages 4.3 = It says: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document..."
I need a fix asap, it's terribly important to get my document back

You don't tell us what version of Office for Mac you presently have, but I'm guessing it might be Office for Mac 2004. If so, in addition to the suggestion to download OpenOffice you can purchase the most recent version of Office for Mac 2011 directly from MS <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/buy>. You can also purchase Pages productivity suite from the Mac App Store <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12>.
