Paging Greg and Paul -- printer server help requested

Greg and/or Paul, could you please take a look at the printer server problem in a Leopard thread. _http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5976257_
I just don't have enough background to help resolve what seems like it should be a fairly simple networking issue.
Thanks,
Matt

  • Macpro and adhoc print server

I am trying to setup a Linksys printserver in adhoc mode using a MacBook Pro. I have searched the internet for directions and can not find any.
Here is what I am trying to do. My daughter will be going to college in the fall. I thought it would be nice if she didn't have to plug into her printer when she needed to print something. The university has a wireless network but obviously I can't add the printer to that. So, I thought a wireless printserver would be the way to go. The linksys says it will work in adhoc mode and thus does not need a wireless network to operate. However, there aren't any directions included with the unit to set this up. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I briefly looked at bluetooth but it would be extremely slow and not provide a print buffer so I dismissed it quickly. Is this a better solution?

Sorry, I'm not going to give you any adhoc mode help.
But I will tell you that how easy and how well it works is dependent on the printer model. The Linksys uses standard protocols that the Mac can use - but to use those protocols, the Mac requires a CUPS driver for your printer model. Manufacturer-provided drivers aren't CUPS drivers (postscript printers avoid any hassles because they are automatically CUPS-compatible). Apple included the third-party Gimp-Print (CUPS) drivers for lots of non-postscript printers, but you need to be forewarned that quality with third-party (free) drivers is almost always less than OEM drivers.
This isn't an advertisement, but I want to explain that Mac-to-Mac sharing and Mac to Airport Express/Extreme printing avoid the problem by using a proprietary comm protocol that essentially redirects the USB driver output to the other computer/Airport print server. So an Airport Express print server is often better for Mac users. I personally don't have one....
    So, what printer is it?

  • Powerbook and Linksys print server

    Hello All,
I have a question which I believe I know what he answer is. I have a new Powerbook. right now, I am using a Linksys Print Server connected to a Epson inkjet printer. This is networked in my home windows environment. When you add a new pc etc, the Epson drivers are installed first than the Print server drivers. However, it seems there are no Mac driver etc for the Print server per Linksys. So basically, am I stuck with adding a dedicated printer to the powerbook or taking the print server out of the equasion here and letting one of my windows pc be the print server. No an option that I really wanted.
    Thanks,
    AlRoz

    Al,
Before you do all that, try some of the options Tiger gives you. In the Applications folder there is a Utilities Folder. In there there is a Printer Setup Utility. Open it, and click Add. At the top there is a Default Browser and IP Printer. Click IP Printer. In this window you should be able to set up the connections so your powerbook can talk to your printer thru the ethernet printer server.
    Hope this helps

  • Macs And A Print server WGPS606 How To Configure

Hi there, having a spot of bother, lol
I have a pc laptop and 2 mac laptops.
set the print server up with pc laptop, and it works a treat, no problems! thou i did connect 1printer and its in port 2, but following the instructions on the web i changed everything where necessary and pc lappy works a treat.
    Now the macs.
1stly i installed the printer to work with a usb lead and it works on them both fine.
    Then
I followed the instructions available from http://kbserver.netgear.com/kbwebfiles/N101570.asp
and when i get to select the printer type and model, the one i'm wanting to setup isnt listed, even thou its installed, and when you use the autodetect it comes up with a generic somet or other that doesnt work.
How do i get my printer listed or where do i find the file containing the driver info?
Ive seen a few of these problems crop up, but never the answers,
any help would be greatly apreciated!
    Mark

I don't think you can trace the printer's log from the Windows print server but you can setup Windows Audit Policy to see who printed the document when.
You can also check on the printer's log on the printer's web interface ( most of the network printer have this feature) to see the complete logs.

  • Notebook using Vista and wireless print server and HP5500 printer problem

Installed std vista local driver for hp5550 printer with usb cable direct to printer.  Works ok
Then, disconnected usb copper line to HP labtop and connected it into print server in router (D-link router to HP5500 printer).
Installed wireless network driver in labtop (vista os)(no updated hp driver available for Vista on HP site).
Print jobs just stack up in the que.
Used 192.168.0.1 address (which works fine for my other old win 98 computer).
Driver using the "raw" setting not "LPT"
    Print Sharing is enabled.
    Any suggestions?
p.s.  The wirless system works fine on an old windows 98SE computer using the original 5550 installation disk.

Went back and installed the "Windows 2000 Print Server Software (from D-link Router 824vpn).  I assume that this included the USP Shareport program that was recommend in a thread.  I can now access router wirelessly.  However, wireless print jobs go into que for hp5550, que emptys, but printer does not start up.  Copper usb from printer to computer works fine (as separate printer)sta.  Using HPdeskjet 5550 (HPA ) printer, port 192.168.0.1, printer name/ip 192.168.0.1, protocal 9100, raw setting, port 9100, LPR and SNMP are both blank. Any suggestions (OS is Vista).  No drivers from Dlink or HP for this application.  Thanks

  • HP DeskJet 712c Driver and Wireless Print Server Setup

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am unable to setup my printer to print. Previous to using the MacBook Pro I was using a windows machine without any trouble printing to this printer, however now I can't locate the printer on a list of pre-installed drivers for Mac. I've already checked HP's website and was unable to find any drivers that were for Mac OS. What is a good alternative driver source? Once I do get the driver what would my next steps need to be to set up the wireless print server to work with my mac?
    Printer: HP DeskJet 712c
    Wireless Print Server: D-Link DP-311P
I would be grateful for guidance to go about this process so that I can use my printer again.
    MacBook Pro 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

HP-provided drivers don't support network printing. You'll need to install Foomatic (a PPD interpreter), ESP ghostscript (postscript translator) and the 712c PPD from:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/showprinter.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet712C
Then, since we don't have the auto-setup software for OS X, you need to review the print server manual and find out which IP printing protocol to use. The easiest is HP Jetdirect (called TCP/IP raw port printing in many manuals) if it's available, because it doesn't require the device queue name.
    Good luck.

  • Deskjet F 4480 and a print server for network printing

I have a HP Pavilion (win 7) and an Acer netbook ( Win XPsp3) wirelessly networked with the HP Paviion  as the host for the Deskjet multifunction printer. I would like to set up a print server  to alleviate some problems we are having with the Acer accessing the printer. Uaually all is ok, but  It seems that whenever that netbook is put into sleep mode, I have to reboot it, shut down the printer (even to the point of disconnecting the USB and power cords, and then re hooking up all the cables)  to get ithe netbook to print. so, I am looking at installing a print server to get around this annoyance.
I am using a DLink WB-1310 router, BTW.
Any suggestions on a capable print server? Not to mention any other suggestions, which i certainly would appreciate.
    Thank you, all.

  • Mail and MS Exchange Server - help!

Can anyone tell me the simple way to go from Entourage to Mail 3.0? I work within an MS Exchange environment and I really want to use Mail now (the new version is exactly what I need) but my IT dept tell me integrating Mail and Exchange is impossible... Can that be true?
Does anyone have step by step instructions/stages I can take to them to get this sorted?
    Thanks, Francis

I can assure you that integration between Mail and Exchange is possible, at least in some scenarios. I am the primary Exchange system administrator for a medium-sized university that uses Exchange 2003 with an OWA (Outlook Web Access) front-end server.
I currently have Mail and Entourage 2004 running side by side on my just upgraded Mac. I used the mail account configuration wizard with ease. Go to the the Mail Preferences and click on Accounts. You can use the '+' button to add an account. Supply your full name and email address to the wizard and click continue. In the Account Type selection, choose Exchange. Type a friendly description such as "Exchange - Your Name". To get things to work correctly, you may need to know on what backend server your mailbox resides. You will also need to know what your OWA server is named on the network. You will also need to know what server is your outgoing mail server. This will likely be the same as your OWA or backend server. You should be able to retrieve those items from your Entourage settings. In my configuration, I was able to put the name of my OWA server (ex. owa.company.com) in both the Incoming Mail Server and Outlook Web Access Server fields as well as the outgoing mail server.
I am not sure how the configuration will vary with Exchange 2007 or in an environment without an OWA server. There are also issues with Address Book Integration of the Global Address List in Leopard in situations where there are multiple domains in a single forest. In that regard, contacts won't automatically resolve as they do in Entourage in many cases.

  • WRT54G and a Netgear WGPS606 Print Server

    Hi,
Am having some issues that I hoping someone can help me with.  First I have a broadband modem which is connect to my Linksys WRT54G.  I recently bought a netgear print server (WGPS606) to allow for wireless printing.
In going through the setup of the print server I assigned it a static IP (192.168.1.150) address which is outside of the DHCP pool on the Linksys router (pool of DHCP address is 192.168.1.100 - 109).  The issue is that the print when it first starts up is assigned the IP address specified however after about 5-10 minutes...the Linksys router seems to reassign its IP address to something within the DHCP pool.
I cannot seem to figure out where in the setup for the router you set up specific devices with static ip addresses.
Any help or insight into this is greatly appreciated.
    M

With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address. So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or print server, not in the router.
Also, in the computer or print server, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0 and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1 and "DNS server" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
The Linksys DHCP server does not "give out" an address unless an address is requested.  Therefore I would be suspicious that somehow the print server is requesting an address.   Usually "DHCP automatic" is automatically turned off when you setup your print server with a fixed address, but maybe, somehow, this is not happening in your print server.  If the print server has any kind of "DHCP automatic" setting, make sure it is off.  This could be a setting that you access through buttons on the print server, or through the print server setup software or setup pages.
Also, I assume you are connecting your printer to the print server using a USB cable.  If you are instead using an ethernet cable to connect your printer to the print server, then it is probably your printer that is requesting the address.   In this case, either use a USB cable, or setup the printer itself with an address outside the DHCP server range, such as 192.168.1.151
    Hope this helps.

  • Wireless print server with Mac G4 and Dell PC's

I have a belkin wireless router and a linksys WPS54G print server. Hardwired by ethernet cables to the router are two computers 1) Dell 2400 and 2) Apple G4.
I am trying to get the Apple to print to the printserver. the linksys software set the Dell up and the print server and they work fine. I have tried everything i can on the Apple but no luck. Seems to be the driver. The printer is printing gibberish from the mac. The printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R320. I dowmloaded the drivers for Mac OS 10.4.4... from the epson website - I chose each one for the printer on my MAC and tried to print. The result was either no print out or differing gibberish each time. What can I do?

Please search this forum. Your precise issue has been covered several times. You have to use a CUPS driver for network printing - Epson's drivers are Carbon, not CUPS. Start by updating the Gimp-Print drivers that Apple included in OS X to the next newer version, now called Gutenprint 5.0.0:
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=1537

  • Router and print server

Since I security enabled my router, my Belkin Print server won't work? Any ideas how to fix?

Your wireless print server will need to be set to the same SSID, encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.) , and key as your router.  For WEP, enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router) into your print server, not the WEP password or passphrase.   For WPA or WPA2, enter your key (sometimes called password or passphrase) into your print server.
If you are still using an SSID of "linksys", be sure to change it to a new unique SSID in both the router and the print server, otherwise your print server might try to connect to your neighbor's router.

  • Creating Queue, Print Serve, and Printer

We are using Novell Netware 4.x.
We have a HPLJ5 SI printer with a CNET Print Server attached via the LP
cable port then attached to the network.
When creating the print queue, print server, and printer via the Netware
Administrator it appears that nothing is seen on the locally attached
    print server.
I have reviewed the config on the Print Server, all appears correct, but
when I add the queue, server, and printer, the system does not see the
    prin server?
I have been recently introduced to Novell, so please bear with me if the
info to answer is not all here.
    TIA,
    Bill

    We are using IPX/netware.
The print server is configured with:
    1. The print server name
    2. The Netware server name
    3. NDS Tree and Context
I have also created the Queue, Print Server, and Printer in the
organization. The print queue does have the print server and printer in
    the assignmenets area.
I guess I am a little confused. If the print server is attached to the
printer what is the relationship between the print server and the queue?
And what makes this different between that and a print server and queue on
    the server itself?
I guess you can tell I am a little (or maybe even a lot) lost!
    TIA,
    Bill

  • Still cannot print via Moto Print Server after 10.4.3

I just sent this message to Apple via their Feedback page:
I have an older HP 5MP laser printer which is very reliable and has plenty of usefull life left. It has a parallel port and an Apple port. The new G5 tower I bought does not accept either of the printer's connections. I installed a very useful Motorola SBG1000 Internet Gateway device that includes a cable modem, ethernet router, wireless router and a printer server which allows me to continue to use the HP 5MP.
When I got the G5 all I had to do to use the print server was to plug it in and empower it using a browser page which access the controls of the SBG1000. When I would print from any application, the printer dialog box would refer to the SBG1000 as the printer name.
When I installed the latest update to 10.4.3 I cannot print to the HP at all. In Classic Mode, the Chooser can see the SBG via Appletalk but I can't figure out how to empower it from within Tiger.
I also have an epson PhotoStylus printer attached to the G5 by USB. It works fine and I can control it from the desktop printer application. However I still have many text only, black and white documents that should be printed on the HP 5MP.
What can I do to get this working again?
    Thank you!

    Problem resolved!
The Help Desk at Motorola assisted me to reinitiate the AppleTalk definitions using the browser-based interface with the SBG1000 gateway. All I had to do was to follow the add a printer steps and I was back in business!
Unfortunately, the next day I had a major hard-drive failure so now I am hosed again for a while. My G5 is in the shop to see if they can recover the drive's data.
I usually spend the day after Thanksgiving doing back ups and system maintenance but I couldn't get it to boot up.
Tried zapping PRAM, reset the memory management unit, reset firmware and ran the Disk Repair utility 4 times. Bummer.

  • 10.5 print server whoes

I work as a server and ACMT engineer and installed some Mac Mini's with OS X server at different locations. These are used for filesharing, time machine backup and for print serving. Now, 2 of our clients are experiencing problems with their print servers, the only thing the've got in common, is that there are multiple printers connected to their server and that they got an high volume of print jobs during a given day. The problems they experiencing are that the queu get stuck and no print jobs are getting printed. As far i know this only happens when more printers and printer queu are connected and used on OS X server. All printers are set up as IPP and LPR with bonjour.
    Anybody got a solution?

I have been experiencing similar sorts of problems.
I temporarily solved my problem of slow printing this morning by turning off the firewall on the Mac OSX 10.5 server. After turning off the firewall, printing from clients worked almost instantaneously. Turning the firewall back on causes the problems to recur. The firewall on the server is normally set to allow all traffic for the local network, but block most ports for the "any" network definition.
I expect that I have to allow any traffic for the local link address, or some such work around to fix the problem permanently. It does not seem wise to run a server with no firewall rules.
The other thing I did to help out printing stability earlier was to connect to the URL http://127.0.0.1:631 on the print server (Cups web management) and set the Error Policy option for print queues to abort-job rather than stop-printer.
