Painfully Slow Airport Extreme Issues

So I replaced a 54G Belkin wireless router this weekend with a new Airport Extreme thinking I would like to be able to get N speed (N-capable MacBookPro and MacBook in the house) and the benefit of connecting a hard disk.
Unfortunately, both the speed and range of the new Airport Extreme are horrible. The Belkin router performed at better speed and range and I'm close to just reinstalling it.
I've read everything on this site related to slowness but no change in set up has successfully produced better results. Any ideas?
Dragging in Chicago...

Well, the "speed" really depends on your ISP, it really does not matter if you have a G or N if your ISP has a cap on your connection G & N or even 1Gbps will have no impact on your speed.
It also depends if you are in a house or apartment. If you are in a rural area you will get better results than a heavy traffic downtown apartment building. Sometimes the AEBS will work best being in the top floor of the house, other times it will work best being in the basement of the house (mine is setup in the basement and it works just fantastic.)
Microwaves, wireless phone systems, and other wireless devices such as a cell phone tower will have a great impact in your wireless network.
Try moving the AEBS around the house you will find some spots to provide better coverage than others...
P.s.- have you tried to set the "N" to 5Ghz and to interference robustness??

  • AirPort Extreme Issues

I am having the hardest time getting my new Airport Extreme to work properly. Or at least me to work properly with it. It was working initially then I configured it the way I like it and started having issues. I reset it to default settings and my computers connect to it and through it. If I go through the Airport setup wizard (give it a network name, WPA2 Personal with key) then my computers can still connect to it, or so they say and so the Airport "Wireless Clients" list says, but they cannot connect to any other computers on the network nor can they connect to the Internet.
The logs are repeating this over and over:
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx (reserved 2).
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
I am going crazy. I am tired so lack of sleep is not helping. Can anyone help me so that I do not have to run my network in an unsecure default mode with my Airport Extreme?
Oh, when I plug into the Airport extreme via ethernet cable, I can access the Internet and other computers just fine. If I unplug the ethernet and just use wireless I can attach to the Airport but no throughput.
    Thanks

Have you tried it with WPA disabled?
Do you have access control enabled/disabled? Disable it if you have it enabled.
Is it configured for a closed network? If so, disable that option.

  • Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues

I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?

    Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents?

  • Odd Airport Extreme Issues

Hi I'm new to these discussion boards but I was wondering if someone could possibly help me with some airport issues I've been having. My roommate and I both share use an Extreme with Comcast and as far as internet goes everything is great. However outside of that it has issues with my different devices. My main complaint that I would want to be fixed the most is the issue of my PS3. When I hook up my Playstation to the base station it recognizes everything fine and goes through all the steps without an issue. When I go to test the connect though it fails when it tries to connect to the Playstation Network. I know this is an issue with the Airport cause I have the same setup at another house with a different router and have no problems. The reason I find it odd though is because it will randomly work at the most random of times. If someone could help me that would be wonderful since I've been having to live with this for almost 10 months now

+I typically do adjustments to the configuration file via wireless. Do you recommend that I only use a hard-wire connection to adjust the configuration file?+
My preference is to do any configuration changes this way and I advise users to use this method, but if wireless works reliably, there's no reason to change.
Have you checked the disk for errors using Disk Utility?
Are you using a powered USB hub with the drive? The USB port on the AirPort Extreme does not supply enough current for a number of hard drives.
FAT 32 can't handle single file sizes larger than 4 GB, so that may be something to check as well.
You are correct that Time Machine can't be used on the FAT 32 formatted disk.

  • Airport Extreme Issues and Set up with Win PC

I have an airport extreme gigabit edition connected via ethernet cables to my 20inch imac and my wifes windows pc also connected via ethernet cable and she has gigabit connection on her system. However, her internet speeds are way slower than mine. I have run adware scanner and made sure it was free of anything that may slow it down that way.
When I set up the Airport Extreme I did nothing more than plug her system in. Is there something else I should have done? Also I can see her computer on the network from both of my macs, but I can't see my macs from her computer.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. She has a book keeping business and does some work from home and she is ready to kill me because of the internet speeds she is getting.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jamie

If the AirPort Extreme that you are asking about looks like the product in this Apple information sheet........
    http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/
Then please click the Tech Specs link in the upper right corner of the page and then look down to System Requirements to see what is required to set up and administer the AirPort Extreme.
Once you have the product set up by using a Mac or iPhone / iPad, a PC should be able to connect to the network.  Please note that we say "should", and not 'will" here, as the Windows FireWall and Microsoft Security Essentials will sometimes have a way of trying to block the PC from connecting.
As far as providing assistance on how to set up the AirPort Extreme, we would need to know what device you are planning to use for this and the make and model number of your modem.

  • Airport Extreme issue with printer

I recently switched to an Airport Extreme to replace my linksys router.   Since then, I am no longer able to find my Epson Artisan 810 printer when I try to install it.  (I'd been printing with it for about a year prior). My PC has no problem with printing and all of my devices are able to find the wireless signal with no issues.   I also added OS X Lion at the same time.   Now  I am unable to print through my Macbook Pro.  Has anyone had similar issues and found a solution.  Thank you!!

I just spent several hours linking an Epson Workforce 600 printer to a new Airport Extreme network. On the printer, I reset the printer to its original settings. It was then recognized by the Epson setup software program.

  • Slow airport extreme

My airport extreme base station which is approx. 3 yrs. old, is running slow or not connecting at all.  I'm running several devices, not all at the same time. What is the capacity of this unit for the number of device ? Does it refresh every so often?  Thank you.

    System Prefs->network->airport->tcp/ip.......
1> I set the tcp/ip settings manually. (was default at auto)
2> I set IPv6 to "off" (was default at auto)
Safari pages seem to load at faster/normal speeds now.
I just got my new MacBook Pro 2.16 ghz core duo last week. I eventually noticed the internet browsing speed difference between wireless and wired..like these other people. The airport connection could barely load some pages sometimes while the cabled connection loaded pages fast. The signal is strong, and it is connected to the network, and internet, and all sharing works, even the windows box. The airport card was just choking on something.
I have a netgear wireless router MR814v2. not an apple airport base station. So it would not show in airport admin utility as 1 guy suggested.
anyways, seems ok now after making those 2 adjustments
    /me knocks on wood.

  • Slow Airport Extreme 5th Gen Data Transfer

    Airport Extreme Slow Data Transfer
When transferring files between PC – Nas, Nas – PC, & PC – PC my speeds are extremely slow (1.3 – 3.3mbps).  Files range in size from 350mbps to 4gb. Here is my set-up:
    Acer Aspire 5532 Win 7 x64 (internal 5ghz nic)
Toshiba Toshiba Satellite C655 Ubuntu 12.04 (internal 5ghz nic)
    Gateway GT5418E Win 7 x64 (USB 2ghz nic)
    Iomega 2TB Nas
    Seagate GoFlex Home 3TB Nas
    5th Generation Airport Extreme
    Firmware Version: 7.6.3
    Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
    Channel: 149 (automatic), 11 Automatic
    Radio Mode: 80211.n Only (5ghz) – 80211n Only (2.4ghz)
Multicast Rate: High (also tried low and medium)
    Use Wide Channels: Checked
2nd Generation Airport Extreme 5ghz extended network
It doesn’t seem to make a difference if I am using the extended network or sitting 5 feet from the primary (either band) with the extended disabled. I ran a LAN Speed test: averaging 12 – 16mbps write and 20+ read.  Any advice would be helpful!
    Thanks!

  • AIRPORT EXTREME RUNNING EXTREMELY SLOW., AIRPORT EXTREME RUNNING EXTREMELY SLOW.

why is a brand new airport extreme running extremely slow. Worked fine before the firmware update.

I nearly fainted when I just read your post.  I bought the new airport extreme on June 24, 2011, just as the store was closing -- 8:45 PM.   At home it worked well right out of the box, but the next morning it has been nothing but trouble.    I wracked my brain to figure out what could change overnight, and your suggestion that it was updated by firmware is logical.  Oddly, it works well with my desktop, which is less than two feet away (I don't use ethernet), but in the next room over it is fast only sporadically.    I replaced the prior extreme because it suddenly quit, and the genius spent some time diagnosing it and concluded it no longer worked.

  • Extremely slow Airport Extreme

Is my Airport Extreme just dying?  Experiencing extremely slow downloads and intermittent dropping of internet across multiple laptops & iPhones. Did a side-by-side wifi speed test (w/ SpeedSmart app on iPhone) of Airport Extreme connected to Verizon FIOS modem vs. FIOS modem's built-in wifi.  Airport download 0.23Mbps vs. built-in 7.23 Mbps. Upload, Airport 0.53 Mbps vs. built-in 7.83 Mbps.  Routers about 18” apart, iPhone in same position for both tests.
I updated the firmware in the Airport, rebooted (several times - Airport and modem).  Get close-to-normal downloads for short while, then problems recur. Any thoughts appreciated.

How old is the extreme? What model from the base please.. A1xxx and what firmware is it running?
How is it setup? It should be in bridge to the FIOS plugged into it by ethernet.. and should be setup to create a wireless network with a different name to the FIOS and on a different channel. Auto should allow the channels to be determined by the router at start up it is not always going to work right.
It is also a question of what iphone as later ones can do 5ghz which is faster on the airport than 2.4ghz is on the FIOS.

  • Slow Airport Extreme on wifi

I have a new Macbook with a factory installed airport extreme card (80211). It is very slow linking to the internet. It is constantly going in to scanning mode. I have to click on that to turn Airport on and even then it takes forever to have a page download. It has happened in other locations too so I don't think it's my Internet connection....Any ideas?

    Steve,
There is no such thing as a "factory installed airport extreme card." I think you intended to say your Macbook has Airport. Can you tell us how you are trying to connect to the Internet? Do you have a wireless router (that is what an Airport Extreme is) and if so what kind?
Airport is Apple's implementation of 802.11X WiFi, however in order to make it work it has to wirelessly connect to WiFi router which is connected to Internet (DSL or Cable) modem.
This link is information on Airport Extreme.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB053LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjE0NDc3Ng
If you don't have a router connected to your Internet Modem then your Macbook will continue to scan and not connect until it can locate a WiFi router.

    Roger

  • Slow AirPort Extreme Connection

I'm having a slow wireless connection problem using AirPort Extreme Base Station for a last few weeks. It's possible that this problem started when I installed OS update 10.4.7., but I'm not totally sure.
When I'm connected to the Internet via LAN, I have no problems with the speed. However, when I'm connected wirelessly, pages loads very slowly as if there were 10 other computers on the network. It takes long to get to the web page, and once the page starts loading, it loads in several steps with pauses between the steps. The speed of downloading a file appears to be OK once it starts although it still takes a long time to get it started.
It happens with Safari, FireFox, and IE. My G3 iBook 600MHz behaves the same way with OS 10.3.x.
I tried both soft reset and hard reset of the base station, and re-installed the firmware v.5.7. I tried the different channels and encryptions, switched between wireless b and g, turned off all the cordless phones in the house, and brought the iMac right next to the base station to minimize the interference.
With all these, the wireless connection is still very slow although the signal strength is at full strength.
I'm wondering if anybody is having a similar problem after installing OS 10.4.7. update. I would appreciate any suggestions to solve this problem.

After all the trial and error, finally I've figured it out.
First, I removed DNS Server address from the box at Network Preference/ Airport/ TCP/IP location. This immediately improved the web page loading speed. In addition to this, I also set my IPv6 to "off."(Default was "automatically")
With combination of these two network settings, I'm back to the full speed.
In the past, I wrote down DNS Server address in the box when Safari was having problems finding web address, and I always had to click load button twice to load a particular page. Back then, providing the DNS Server address solved the problem.
I suppose when Apple fixed this problem during one of the updates, it ended up making the network slower unless DNS Server address was left blank.
If you are still having slow connection problem, try this setting.

  • My iMac and iPad keep loosing the wireless connection to Airport Extreme issue started after I installed Lion?

Since installing Lion, I have been loosing my connection to airport Extreme after I have put my IMac in sleep mode.  My Ipad is also loosing the connection.  This issue started since the installation of Lion, is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

I've had that problem on my macbook running 10.5.8 for a few years. Sometimes it's worse than others. No other computer in my house has this problem.

  • New Airport Extreme Issues... Please Help

I just got my Air Port Extreme 802.11n base station. Whenever I update settings on it, it doesn't automatically restart, i have to manually power cycle it to get it to function again. Also I connect to the internet via an ethernet LAN (think dorm setup) when i get the station configured properly and the light to show green I cannot connect to the wireless network, when I try airport says that an error has occurred thats it, although I do get internet when I connect to the base station via an ethernet cable. Any ideas or suggestions to help these oddities?

use Airport Utility and check the information you are getting from the router. Does it show orange light or not; if yes then double click it and find out what it is telling you. From your information you need to examine your wireless settings.
You can go to Apple/support and type in Airport Extreme and review the pdf file for creating airport Extreme networks.

  • Airport Extreme issue connecting through usb to freeagent external hdd

I have a brand new 15"MacBook Pro and am using an Airport Extreme for wireless internet throughout my house. That part of the system seems to work fine. My problem is that I want to connect both my printer and FreeAgent hdd to be accesses through my wireless network. When I plug in a 4 port hub everything seems fine (green light). When I plug in the Free Agent hdd the light immediately turns to blinking amber. In airport utility the hdd does not show up but I get a message which says "disk needs repair". If I plug the hdd directly into my MacBook I can can see it, read from it and write to it fine. I can't find anything that indicates that the hdd wouldn't be compatible with the Airport Extreme. Help!

You can access the AirPort Disk via normal file-sharing connection options, such as selecting the server from any Finder window’s sidebar in the Shared section. AirPort Disk uses two standard methods: AFP (for Macs) and Samba (for Windows or Linux).
Leopard accesses AirPort Disks through the Finder, just like any other network volume. Open any Finder window, and look in the sidebar for a list of servers in the Shared section. You should find your AEBSn.
To mount an AirPort Disk volume, follow these steps:
    1. Select the AEBSn in the Sharing section of the sidebar.
    2. To connect as a Guest user, you need take no more steps; To use a named account, click the Connect As button in the upper right and enter your credentials.
    3. Double click a volume that’s shown to mount it on your system.
For both Windows XP and Vista, open the network browser by double-clicking Network on the Desktop. The base station name should appear in the Network browser.
