Painfully slow startup - any suggestions how to make it faster?
Hi Everyone,
Just thought I'd ask people - my 17" iMac G5 1.9GHz PowerPC with 512MB ram is painfully slow at start-up. Seems to take forever! Does anyone know how I could clear a lot of rubbish from my computer and someone make it faster.
Would anyone recommend a complete re-install - would that improve speed?

Mark, you can clear space on your drive and speed it up by moving a lot of sound and video files to a DVD, or even better, to an external; Firewire drive that you can partition and also use as a clone boot disk.
Go through your applications folder and look for stuff that you never use, then get AppZapper to remove all traces of them. You can also use Monolingual to remove the tons of extra languages installed with Word and OS X, just make sure you uncheck English and any other language you might use.

To clear apps swipe up on the app. You might want to try resetting all setting it has helped some. Also try setting>general>accessibility>increase contrast turning this on reduces a couple animations which some say shows an increase in speed.

I have a table with huge volume of data. I am doing following activity using SQL script
1). alter table my_tab add new_col NUMBER(10);
2). update my_tab set new_col= 50;
3). alter table my_TAB modify new_col NOT NULL;
4). Create index on my_tab(new_col);
Above scrip is taking around 10 hours to excecute.
Could any one please suggest how to make it fast.

You haven't shown us the details of your table structure or an example of the data, or even how many rows is a "huge volume of data".
Without proper information we would just be guessing and that doesn't help anybody. -

How much free disk space do you have and how much memory do you have, running which operating system? Need that information to have any basis to make recommendations.

Could someone suggest how to make interactive images using photoshop. A professor of mine created a poster that had interactive graphics that made movements when rolled over as well as graphics. If someone could suggest a tutorial it would be appreciated. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

[email protected]Images are not interactive on their own. There has to be more then an image file created with Photoshop. I'm sure the poster image you referring to was being displayed on some electronic device of some kind which was use by some image display application like a browser, that there was some programming involved for example interactive dynamic html, mouse overs , on click perhaps some javascript or even flash. And of course an input device like a mouse for a user to use. More then Photoshop is involved.

You could try a reset followed if required by a restore initially with backup and then again if required as new
If that makes no difference it will be a hardware issue and you will have to return it to Australia -
I downloaded updates to iphoto and computer erred on install. A report went to Apple.
I cannot open iphoto. I decided to reinstall iphoto from my app disk and now I get an error message"......iphoto may be damaged or incomplete" Any suggestions how to get iphoto going again???

since I upgraded to os 5.1 for my iPhone I can no longer type in reminders. Any suggestions how to get around having to use siri for reminders?
Unfortunately, I have a very similar problem. Since I upgraded to os 5.1 on my new iPhone 4S the reminders screen will not add new reminders or scroll up and down. What's more strange is the screen will still scroll side to side allowing access to the Completed list, and both the Completed list and Date functions work normally so this must be an upgrades glitch.

Elements 13 - a jpg file always opens in B & W raw and I cannot get it to open in colour. Same file opens OK in colour in Elements 9. Any suggestions how I can get it to open in colour in Elements 13?
Thanks for your reply - I just open the file with "Open" in the File menu - all my own jpg files open fine in colour. This is someone else's photo given to me and it does not matter how I open it "Open", "Open in raw" or "Open with ..." it always opens in B & W raw in the raw dialogue box. In Elements 9, which I also have on my PC it opens fine as jpg in colour so I can edit it there, but I am just wondering why I am getting this problem in elements 13. If I open it in any other programme such as Windows Photo viewer or Office 2010 viewer it opens fine in colour.
Not sure what you mean by "basic settings" menu.

I have Adobe Reader XI with the package that allows me to send pdfs and convert pdfs to Word. When I open a pdf and try to search the search shows no matches even though the word I am searching for is in the document. Any suggestions how to search?
Once again, my thanks for your assistance. If I may impose on your generosity one more time, if I understand you correctly if I create a document on Word or WordPerfect, print it and scan it to create a pdf, the search function will not work. But, if I create the pdf document in Word the search function will work. Unfortunately, I am not sure how I create a pdf document in Word other than by printing it and scanning it. Could you please explain.
