Paint over or replace color in a selected area - How?

I was in the mountains taking photos yesterday.
Unfortunately while I was there a rather pale blue sky turned grey.
So I have a nice water fall and ugly white grey sky above it.
I have PSE 9 and bought it for occasions just like this.
Just downloaded a trial version of PSE 11.
What is my best option to convert the sky to blue?
Since I'm a begginer, any steps listed to get this acheived would be very appreciated.

Try starting with the Smart Brush (under the Red Eye Removal tool, looks like a wide paint brush). It's default setting is "Blue Skies". Basically, you use this tool to paint in a region that you want to apply the effect (for non-beginners, it uses the Smart Selection tool to create a mask for an Adjustment Layer). As you paint in the sky, it will attempt to find the boundaries of the sky region automatically and turn it blue.

For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head. Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt. I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation. Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.

It is possible by customize the control by its template, see this for more information:
ListViewItem styles and templates.
By changing the selected visual state, you can change the color of the ListView item background, also the size of the selected item.

Replace color within a selection

In a group of mixed objects, would like to change all instances of color X to color Y, including colors of drop shadows.
"Recolor Artwork" isn't helping.

If you used global colors, then you can use merge swatches in the swatches palette.
Recolor artwork should do what you want, but that depends on if you color x is built the same way. Woudl need more infomation on what you are doing, or post the file if you can, and we can help you get this accomplished.

How do I change color in a selection, not globally?

Hi guys,
My question is how do I change color in a selection and not globally? My company uses Freehand currently and there is an option to find and replace color in a selection instead of the entire document. I need to figure out how to do this in Illustrator as we will be switching over shortly.

How do I get hexadecimal code or rgb values of the color in a selection?

I have a color. I need to know what its hexadecimal code is or what its rgb values are. I cannot find any tool or interface element in Photoshop that discovers the hexadecimal code or rgb values of a color in a selected area.
I have searched in the User Guide on every phrase I can think of, and not one gets a hit.
Any help will be appreciated.

Easiest way is to click on the foreground colour which opens the Color Picker dialog box, and changes the cursor to the eye dropper. Now click on the colour. If it is crucial that it uses your selected area, copy the selection to a new layer. I have no idea if you want a point sample, or average of entire selection or what though?

Replace Color - selected areas turn gray instead of desired sample color. HELP?!

Hi, I am using Photoshop CS3 and have a question regarding "replace color."
First...here are the steps I enacted prior to trying to use the 'replace color' function:
1. In RGB Mode - - Selected and filled a shape a color.
2. Ran the selected object through Alien Skin/Impact "Chrome" function.
3. Selected 'adjustments/desaturate.' Did this so that I could then go to Adjustments/color balance..... and then change the entire color of the object to a predominantly red chrome looking scheme.
4. After giving the object a 'chrome' appearance, I wanted to go into the 'white' hilite areas of the object and sample them - and then change them to a bright red color....this is where the 'REPLACE COLOR' function comes in.
5. So I use the color sample eye dropper within 'REPLACE COLOR' and select the white areas I want to change to red...as the 'selection color.'
6. Then, I click down in the lower color box (result color) and sample a color that I want to change the white hilite areas to...in this case, red.
7. This is where the problem occurs - - even though I chose a result color of red...the white areas turn to grayscale within my colored object...so just those areas are gray!!! What the heck??!!
So... how can I desaturate a selected object... then recolor it using 'Color Balance'.... and then replace colors and have the replaced colors actually be a color instead of a gray color?
My file is in RGB mode and everything else is in COLOR.... yet I cannot replace areas within this colored graphic with other colors...it just keeps putting gray tones into the object.

Hi Curt - - this occurs even if I select a color within the same file... something about desaturating the file and then adding color back into it...I can't get it to replace color after that.

Want to paint over unwanted object using background colors

I have this picture of a nice animated scenery, but there is this huge white square on one side of the image. The square is covering some trees, grass, and part of the river. What is the best way to get rid of the square? Is there some way to take parts of the image and paint it over this square?

I am now working with PEv.8. If you have this version, the recompose tool is excellent for this. Perhaps this tool is available in an earlier version as well.
If you don't have the tool, you may want to crop away the white square. Painting over it will do just that.

Replace color inconsistency

I want to replace a color in a schematic, I know what my final color should be (RGB code). However when i do the replacment the final color is not the one I want.
To replace the color i use the color replacement tool and I select the target color, after I click in the result box where the color is and I input the RGB code that i want (204 204 4). After I do OK. However if i go to the final product and use the eyedropper tool that replaced are has a different code (215 217 0)...
Any ideia why this happens and how can get the color that I want in the end?

If you want to use the color replacement tool, then you'll probably have to paint the area with the color replacement tool set to luminosity (tool options bar)
and then go over the area again with the color replacement tool set to color if you want exact color values.
Is your schematic on a transparent layer?

Can't replace color in PSE 9

I am trying to replace one color with another in a photo in PSE 9. Following the instructions in the on-line help does not work. Here is what I do.
1) Select the eye dropper and click in the image to set the foreground color to the replacement color.
2) Right click on the brush tool and choose the color replacement tool. Set the options to Mode=Color, Limits=Discontiguous, Tolerance=25%, Anti-alias=On.
3) Left click on the color in the photo that I want to replace.
4) Hold down the left mouse button and drag over the area containing the color I want to replace. Nothing happens when I do this.
In the photos in the Replace Colors in an Image help topic it appears that at some point in the process the cursor should change to include an eye dropper. I assume this is the cursor I should see before I left click to select the color I wish to replace, however, at no time does the cursor ever contain an eye dropper.
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Splitting a Flattened Image into Layers so I can use the Paint Bucket to change colors

I have what I think is a flattened image that is part of a Website template. (I'm assuming the image is flattened, because when I use the paint bucket to change the color, it colors the whole thing; and when I use the magic wand, the whole image is selected). I need to be able to use the paint bucket to change the colors. What do I have to do to make the image work that way? The image is made to look like you're looking left to right at four file folders. The folder labels are a different color. Is there some way to separate the folders (now in green), the folder labels (now in yellow), and the white background from each other, so I can apply the paint bucket to different layers later? I've worked on this for hours now, and can't seem to find the answer. I'll have to change the colors in the image at least 10 different times, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to using the brush or pencil tools.

Another way is to use the Replace Color Tool. The Hue/Saturation method is probably easier, but I thought I'd mention Replace Color for your information.

In my example I changed the 3rd label in your picture to red.
1. Roughly select the label using the Lasso tools.
2. Enchance>Adjust Color>Replace Color.
3. Click on the label in the picture; it will appear in the box as white on black background. In general you would move the fuzziness slider until just the portion you wish to change appears white. In this case since the yellow is uniform with sharp border the fuzziness slider had minimal additional effect, but I did move it all the way right to capture the fringe pixels.
4. Play with the 3 Transform sliders to get the desired result.
In this next example I changed the top of the lighthouse from red to green (why I would want to do that, I don't know!).

REPLACE COLOR only allows graytones for replacement color

I am trying to use the REPLACE COLOR command to change a white sky to a blue sky. I am running Photoshop CS on Windows XP system. Photoshop provides two descriptions on how to use the REPLACE COLOR command and I have tried both. Howwever, for either one, when I attempt to set the color that will be used to replace the original color, the color picker always "previews" and uses a graytone rendition, not the tone I actually attempt to set. When I wag the mouse over the entire color picker swatch, the preview alway renders a graytone. If I instead type in a known 6-hex digit color identifier I still get a graytone rendition, not the actual
color.
I am trying to change the color for only a portion of the image, so I'm using the rectangular marquee to selection the portion I want to change.
For completeness, here is a list of steps I'm performing-
1)In the Layers palette, select the layer containing the color you want to replace.
2)Use the rectangular marquee to select only a specific area in the image you wish to change.
3)Choose Image > Adjustments > Replace Color.
4)In the Replace Color dialog box, make sure Selection is selected under the preview window.
4)In the image, click the color you want to change.
5)Double-click the Result swatch and use the Color Picker to select the replacement color and click OK.
Any clues what I'm doing wrong or what I may hav set wrong?

Replace color will not work for white or black, as there is no color. There was a post about a month ago with similar topic, with some solutions. Sorry can't remember how to get there, try search with this in mind.

Wishlist: I kinda wish I could combine these 3 into one amazing toolbox:

Refine Edge
This would be groundbreaking and game changing over here.

Personally I consider Replace Color as fairly dispensable as it is a destructive operation.
But you might want to post in the Feature Request Forum.

Batch replace color without using swatch as source

I've searched these forums and the rest of the web trying to find a method to do this... Actions don't cut it (if Actions were able to record the "replace color" dialoge it would be fine) so I've turned to scripts, but I have almost no knowlege on this.
I checked out this thread:

and it is very close, except that it assumes that there is a named swatch as the source color - which there isn't.
The script I tried was .JS
I'm trying to have the script run on a bunch of .eps files in a folder:
- Select object which has specified CMYK value (0,7,34,10)
- Replace fill color of the selected object with another CMYK value (5,19,36,0)
- Save over the existing .eps
- Close
- Make coffee (optional)
Also, any books you can recommend for learning this stuff? For a noob.
