Paint type on black plane only

This question comes up fairly frequently :
1. Start a blank document, in the blank document insert a box for type (Insert > Text Box), set the type size for the default copy in the box to 18pt or 24pt, and open the Apple Colour Picker (View > Show Colours).
2. Type deviceK, select Return to start a new line, and type ICCBased.
3. Select the word deviceK in the first taking care not to select the word ICCBased in the second line, set the Apple Colour Picker to CMYK Sliders, click the Colour Model / Colour Space icon to the left of the CMYK Sliders, scroll down to select Device CMYK, and set the CMYK Sliders to C0 M0 Y0 K100.
4. Don't select the word ICCBased, taking care to leave the default colour model and colour space set by the software and the system.
5. Export as PDF/X-3 with OutputIntent.
6. Open in an auditing application such as Acrobat Professional and select separations preview. Disable the cyan plane/plate, the magenta plane/plate, the yellow plane/plate and note that the word deviceK only paints on the black plane/plate. Select a PDF/X-3 audit and note that there is no CIE reference for the word deviceK (neither a PostScript calibrated colour space nor an ICCBased profile) whereas the word ICCBased references Apple's Generic RGB Profile with the alternate colour space being Apple's Generic Gray Profile. In separations preview the word ICCBased is painted on four planes/plates.
As far as I am aware, this configuration is technically correct. However, if drop shadows are applied to the words or if the words are sandwiched in a transparency/opacity blend space it becomes much more complex. What is or is not correct in that context is uncertain, or perhaps better that I'm uncertain of what would and what would not be correct.

Do you see major problems if all the OS's and apps including eventually Apple standardize on OpenType for internationalization rendering and AAT/GX fades away?
In answering a question, the first step is to determine what criteria are applicable to considering that an answer has been given. I'm not sure what you would consider an answer, since we have discussed this for a year and a half, and you began by rejecting the simplest level which was improved invertibility for character-glyph-character transforms and improved input methods for interactive identification of character information.
Briefly, the purpose of TrueType Specification 1.0 of 1990 is to establish a drawing model for composition wherein which by definition character processing is separable from glyph processing, and the purpose of separating character processing from glyph processing is to avoid that desired glyph designs be drawn by depiction onto incorrect public characters or alternatively by depiction onto private characters.
TrueType Specification 1.0 supports this model by being indefinitely extensible, and by being indefinitely localisable for extensions. Apple supports this which means that were one to want a feature selector / rendering intent uniquely defined in user space then that is possible and localising that is possible in ISO 10646/Unicode strings (see Specification 1.0 for details). In this sense, the application is the client of the layout in the intelligent font which is what David Lemon and Thomas Phinney of Adobe have posted time and time again that Adobe does not want.
David Lemon posted in 1997 the business model for OpenType which is application-dependent drawing. David Opstad posted the objection, and published the objection in a paper on Apple's drawing implementation versus Microsoft's drawing implementation. By definition, if the application does not have to support the feature selectors / rendering intents in the font file, which will preserve the source character string and the glyph run in the backing store, the workaround is for type makers to make type that draws desired glyph designs by depiction onto incorrect public characters or onto incorrect private characters.
It is not possible in system software to stop user access to the Private Use Area because the Private Use Area is legitimate for innovative ideographs in Japanese (itaiji) and Chinese. The marketing manager for Fontlab has advised in public posts that it is admissable to make CMAP Character Maps with Private Use Area drawing as a way to work around the application-dependent drawing model of OpenType. John Hudson has posted since 2000 when he prepared a discussion of the Windows glyph model for Microsoft that drawing desired glyph designs by incorrect private characters in Adobe OpenType is the replacement for drawing desired glyph designs by incorrect public characters in Adobe Type 1.
1989-1997, Apple failed to provide a platform that would produce parity between the small developer and the big developer by providing the small developer with free internationalisation models and free graphics libraries including a free digital document model. 1997-2007, Adobe and Microsoft provided a platform for the static software suites wherein which the software suite owns the internationalisation models, the graphics libraries and the digital document model which, as John Jenkins notes in a paper, is the model for OpenType.
Adobe (and Linotype/Heidelberg) has in the process of undermining first Apple's implementation and then Microsoft's implementation made and marketed type that destroys the source character string on a scale that is almost incomprehensible. Because Adobe depends on recovering source character strings from glyph names and does not preserve the source character string and the glyph run, public perception of the performance of Adobe PDF is not necessarily affected by the fact that Adobe PDF is in fact a poor model even for professional typography in the simple and linear Latin script.
The model is the same: Separate character processing from glyph processing for the sake of portability and repurposing. The implementation is different: Make the font file a client of the application or make the application a client of the font file. Which implementation one wants depends on which software ecosystem one wants: Decentralised internationalisation including localisation in the hands of independent developers who are in a position to provide what their markets desire or centralised internationalisation including localisation in the hands of Anglo-American corporations.
You will not get a high ratio of academic anthropologists to agree to the centralised model.

  • Report Painter - What is value type 10 Statistical Plan

One of my customers is running report 6o00-001 Orders: Actual / Plan / Variance. This report is displaying a plan value when, they say, no plan value has been entered. I have checked normal planning and this is correct - there is no plan value. However, when I check the report painter definition, the column in question will display value type 1 (Plan) and value type 10 (Statistical Plan).
    Can anyone tell me:
    - what is a statistical plan on an order?
    - how can I remove the statistical plan value?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 - Now won't print in Black Ink Only!

Hi! After previously owning the Hp Officejet 8500a pro and experiencing numerous issues related to the 'Black Only' printing! We then decided to scrap the HP Officejet 8500a and move on to a new printer! We did a LOT of research into the new printer and at the time of purchasing the 8600 around August 2012 last year, we found no online content of similar issues relating to the 8500.  We even contacted Live HP support to check if the 8600 would print in Black Ink Only with the colours cartridges levels at empty. The HP live chat representative informed us the printer WOULD indeed print in black only with all COLOUR cartridges installed and empty. Since we bought the new 8600, we have replaced just the Black setup cartridge with a Genuine HP Black 950xl. A few days ago all colours where at about 10% levels, apart from the yellow which then ran empty. We have been printing in Black Ink Only with the following message appearing, since the yellow ran out: "Yellow Cartridge out of ink, click continue to print in Black Ink only" As of this morning, the below message appeared with no option to print ink black only! "Depleted cartridges must be replaced to resume printing" The Yellow and now Magenta where out of ink, with no option but to purchase both cartridges, we replaced them and ran off 8 order sheets in Black Ink Only.  Both cartridges where replaced with Genuine HP. Directly after printing these 8 pages, the current Ink Levels are now: Magenta - 100% fullCyan - Has now ran out with a Red X (Annoying!!!)Yellow - Is showing a 10% Ink level with a brand new cartridge installed!!!Black - 40% full 1. Why am I no longer able to print in Black Ink Only with the empty colour cartridges installed?2. Why is the Yellow showing 10% full with a brand new ink cartridge installed full of ink? Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this, I would very much appreciate some imput. Kind RegardsKev Challis

I know it won't print without a cartrige. I was trying to explain that this "problem" is one that needs to be prepared for in advance by not having empty cartriges installed. I am not trying to find a way around the way the printer is made to function. My printer came with the color cartriges that I plan on having for a long time because I rarely need to print anything in color. The link Jason posted clearly states that this printer, being a IIC, needs all cartriges installed in order for it to print. Here is the section:  For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function. (empahsis mine) Why it needs all supplies installed to function? I don't know and don't care. Why does it not print with empty color cartriges installed (the first question of the person that started this thread)? I don't know and it doesn't really matter. Have one set of color cartriges on reserve in case one of the ones you have runs out of ink. Don't want to hassle with this "problem"? Own another printer that is not an IIC inkjet printer.

  • How do I print in black ink only for a HP office jet 6200?

I'm new to my Macbookpro I just got and having problem printing emails, web info etc in black ink only. I have a HP officejet all in one 6200 printer and have tried but can't find any options for changing to black ink only when the print window comes up. I've checked for software updates and nothing there. I'm not very computer smart but I'm trying my best to figure this out. I've spent hours on this so far. Can anyone help me out?

    Hi,
Follow the steps below in order to print using Black Ink only:
    1. From the application used to print, click the File menu and select Print.
    The Print window appears.
NOTE: The Print window might be minimized - Click the Show Details button to see all available settings.
    2. To access the color options, click the lowest selection box listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.
    3. Select Paper Type/Quality from the drop-down menu.
    4. Click the triangle next to Color Options to expend the settings.
    5. Set the Color field as Grayscale.
    6. Set the Grayscale Mode as Black Ink Cartridge Only.
You may save the settings for future use by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset...
A used preset will remain as default till another preset will be used.

  • Make my HP OfficeJet 4620 print in black ink only, permanently.

I want my printer to always print in black only, on draft quality. I have gone to Devices and Printers > Printing Preferences > Advanced and changed Print in greyscale to "Black Ink Only". I've also made the same change by going to the page I wish to print and going CTRL+P > Properties > Advanced and making the same changes.
However, my printer automatically reverts to printing in full colour after only one document i.e. every time I print a new document the changes are undone and it reverts to full colour.
It is far too time consuming to repeatedly change the settings every time I print something, I have to print around 70 separate documents every morning! How to I make this change permanent?
I'm using Windows 8 if that helps.
    Thanks!

    Hello MarkC-S,
    Welcome to the HP forums!
I understand you tried changing the print settings to "Black Ink Only", but it's reverts back to color ink. As you stated, the print settings seem correct and it should be sticking permanently. How is this printer connected? Wireless or USB? I would recommend uninstalling the software.
Please follow this HP document on Uninstalling From Programs and Features.
Next, clean out your Temp folder on your computer:
On the keyboard, hit the Windows key and "R" key together, then type %temp%. Hit enter.
Press "Ctrl" and "A" together. This will highlight everything. Right click on your mouse and select delete
Now, install the full feature software from the HP website here. Choose your correct operating system; Either 32 bit or 64 bit. If you need help installing the software, then please follow this HP document here. Choose your correct connection type.
After the installation is complete, please let me know if the "Print in black ink" sticks this time!

  • Black cartridge only query.

I want to print B/W photos on Glossy Photo Paper, using the black cartridge only. This could be done on my old Deskjet 5150, but not it seems on the Photosmart  D7360. I do not want B/W photos with a colour tint!
Does anyone have any idea how I can do this please?

The black ink is pigmented on your printer and the Deskjet 5150, it is *not* compatible with glossy photo paper.  If photo paper is selected as the paper type then "use black cartridge only" should not be a choice.

  • Can I print with black cartridge only if colour cartidges are empty on HP C1600 seeries printer?

Can I print using the black cartridge only whilst the colour cartridges are empty? I have a HP Photosmart C1600 series printer and Vista installed on my PC. I have set the Printer preferences to  "Grayscale and use Black Cartridge only" but the printer itself is telling me it wont print unless i replace my empty yellow cartridge. I bought a brand new Black cartridge so i could print using black ink only as i dont need to use colour.

    Hi,
Many printers from all vendors will not print with just one empty ink cartidge, it doesn't matter which one. Some printers allow users to print but at slower than snail speed. Whichever way, we have to have ink carridges to be able to print (even scan).
    Regards.

  • How can I print in black/white only a document that has colors in the original?

How can I print in black/white only a document that has colors in its original. I don't need the print out to be in color, and I don't want to waste the color ink.

It depends on your printer and the application you are using.
In some applications you can choose color vs. greyscale/black&white when you do File > Print.   PowerPoint is one example of an application that allows this choice.
Otherwise, you can usually select greyscale at the time you print the document.  Do File > Print. In the resulting dialog box, there should be an item called Copies & Pages (in Word and other applications) or Preview (in Preview).  Click it.  In the resulting list, you should then see an option called Printer Features.  Click it.  Then you should see an option called Printout Mode.  Usually one of the modes is Greyscale or Black & White.  Select it.  Then Print.
This can also depend on your printer.  Exactly what make/model printer are you using?   And what kind of document are you trying to print (Word, PPT, JPEG, etc)?

  • HP Officejet Pro L7580 how to print in black ink only

My ink cartridges were all empty but I only bought the black ink. How do I just print documents using only the black ink cartridge because everytime I try to print, it tells me I need to replace all the other color cartridges. I selected grayscale and black ink only but still get that message. My OS is Windows 7. Is there anyway around this or do I need to buy the color ones too?

    Hello @Rod24,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you only replaced the black, instead of the color inks because you only want to print in black ink. I will do my best to assist you! Looks like you need to replace the color ink cartridges as well in order to print black ink.
I looked in the manual here. It doesn't state anything about using single-mode ink cartridge. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Have a great day!

One of the color cartridges is empty and the printer won't print in Black in only which is a full cartridge.  I turned Gray scale on and enabled print black ink only but it still won't print.  Is there anything else I can do?
    thanks,

Hello GilbertSimi, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I understand you are looking to print without full colour cartridges installed. Due to the ink system design, this model of printer requires the colour ink to be installed to print. Using it without colour ink could cause damage to the ink system.
If you have any questions about ink you can check out this document on Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers, and this document on How HP measures inkjet page yields.

  • How do I print in black ink only and when I want color I can turn on the feature?

    Hi everyone,
I finally got the HP Envy 5530 to work..hooray!  OK, just a follow-up how do I have my documents print without the color component.
Now I don't mind the color, its pretty, but I just want the standard, old black and white so that I can save the color when absolutely needed.
How do I just print in standard black for homework notes, and when I want color how do I activate this feature.
Is their a way to turn off the colored ink?
How do print in the black ink as cheaply as possiable so the quality isn't fantastic but good enough.
    Thanks.
    Franklin

    Hi,
Me again, to set print Black only as default, please try:
Double click printer ison on desktop,
    Click Set Preferences,
    Click Advanced Settings,
In Grayscale pull down window, select Black Ink Only
    Click Apply then Ok
After that, you can print colors for each job BUT you have to select color to overwrite the default (default will stay until you reset it). Please note: printer still consumes color inks during warming up process.
    Regards.
