Painting in Lightroom 4

Can I use Lightroom 4 to retouch hair?  In Photoshop I use the clone stamp or paint brush for hair work.  I sample the background and then paint over the hair.  In LR4 is there a way to sample color from the image?

Yeah, but it's a pain since you can only do circular spots right now.

  • I am using a computer with CS6 installed, but would like to install Photoshop CS2.

Running Mavericks on an iMac early 2009 vintage; with a full edition of CS6. I would like to utilize Photoshop CS2 but the install program will not allow this. Is there a workaround? Any thoughts on the subject will be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

The simple truth is the Adobe has added bugs into Photoshop they are unwilling to fix. They do not fix bugs reported by users that have given us scripts like Image Processor Pro so these outstanding users leave here.  Adobe has broken users work-flows removing features they used like Picture Package and Oil Painter.  Lightroom is a heavy load to bear just to get jQuery and brrige output web gallerises can nor be customized well.  You don't need light room to use jQuery.
Not all Web Photo galleries were flash based. In fact the Html web galleries are the ones you can customize well. If all Adobe wanted to do was remove Flash web galleries they could have for the support they added for Flash galleries like simpleviewer was not well done and did not take advantage of the customization that simplviewer supports.
Though with my subscription I can download and install Lightroom I don't. I tried some of the Lightroom betas which show me I did not want to used it so it was renoved. If Adobe wanted to change how one Process RAW files why did the not also change ACR why make users learn two user interfaced for raw processing.  Lightroon is not a full fledged image editor you need an image processor like Photoshop with Layers support to be able to blend raw conversions to bring out some details.   If your a business Lightroom Library may god send and something your IT staff can deal with.  For me Lightroom is a maintenance burden I don't need.
Using Adobe Products means high maintenance Adobe release code before they should bug force user to work around them and use older working version of Photoshop.  Adobe support is not what it should be reported acknowledge bugs go unfixed release after release. Photoshop is powerful but has a high cost and I'n not talking money here IMO Photoshop price has always been reasonable for what what you can do with it.  You need to put in a lot of work into Photoshop to get value out of it. Photoshop is not suitable for the general public.

Suffice it to say, the features in CS2 were all good in their day but that was almost a decade ago.  A lot has changed since then.
Most of the features in CS2 are still in CC 2014.  HTML web galleries are still relevant today. Photographer still want to sell Picture packages which CC 2014 can no longer create. Many thing were change in Photoshop some for the better like the removal of the extract plugin which was poor at best.  Photmerge and other features were greatly improves.   Still not all changes made were good. The quality of Photoshop code is not as good as it use to be...

  • Painter tool goes all over in Lightroom 2.5

Haven't seen this issue posted, but my Painter tool is behaving more badly than usual.
I am trying to reject scattered photos while in Library grid mode, using the Painter. Each time I click on an image with the painter, rejects the image ok, then bounces to another part of the screen and I have to scroll back to where I was. In fact, the screen continues to shift around so much that the Painter tool is stupidly dangerous. I have never found it to work as it should, but this is the worst!
I have already downloaded LR2.5 approximately 8 times so far to fix issues - is that my only choice now?
    I'm on a Mac OS 10.4.11.
    Thanks,
    Deb

Really? I had been told differently earlier and it seemed to help with the bugs during the first week of LR 2.5. Seems silly now however.
I will try your suggest to delete the preferences since I have found that very helpful when Photoshop goes wacky. Does it work a similar way that you hold down cmd+opt+shift (?) when re-starting the app?
    Thanks,
    Deb

  • Photoshop CC 2014 crashes when trying to create a panorama from Lightroom?

    Hi,
I have both Photoshop and Lightroom CC installed.
When I pass 6 photos from Lightroom to Photoshop CC to create a panorma, Photoshop goes through the throws, imports the images, generates the panorama then crashes, with a message from Windows saying it is checking for a solution to the problem, then dies.
I have reviewed the posts, and found one that suggest to increase the cache level to 6... tried this and it still dies.
Found another workaround to have Photoshop x64 running and pass the images to it rather than have Lr fire up Ps CC. This worked and produced the panorama.
I am not sure why, but with the use of the CC app, I know have three Ps's on my my machine, x32, x64 and CC..., not even sure what the difference between x64 and CC... ???...
    So my question is...
Is there are a problem with PS CC?... there certainly was with the focus stacking algorithms.. or is it just me.?.. ;(
Thanks for any help with this...
    Cheers
    Keith Friend.

  • In lightroom, is there a way to create a preset where a brush is automatically run?

In lightroom, is there a way to create a preset where a brush is automatically run? Example: If I make multiple different brush adjustments on an image, and I want the exact same edit on another image, can I create a preset for that?

    Hi Heather,
Lr does not (natively) support saving brushes in presets, but it's a UI limitation, not an "under the hood" problem.
You can add brush strokes (or spot removals, or .. ) to a preset using a script I wrote (and offer for free), called
'Add Spots Or Paint To Preset'

  • Lightroom 5 Got Buggy all of a Sudden

Lightroom 5 Got Buggy on me.
I have the latest version installed through creative cloud and I also did an uninstall/reinstall.  Windows 7, 64bit, 32GB RAM, intel core i7 6820, plenty of space on the C drive, went through adobe's optimization list, set cache to 20gb, cleared catalog, etc...  I am working on 16bit tiff's, the same as I work on all the time.
Been using lightroom without any issues for months and this is what it just started doing:
When I use the adjustment brush or manual lens corrections, the preview freezes and takes awhile to update the image.  Simply painful to use.  It used to update in real time without any issues.  When I try to paint with the adjustment brush, clicking once automatically paints the whole frame.  Yes, auto mask is off.  When I pull down a gradient, it is impossible to control its angle or to rotate it accurately.  The program feels like it caught a cold.
I have restarted my pc, updated windows, and re-installed Literoom.  Not sure what else to do here as there is nothing I can see that changed with my system which could have caused these issues.
It's all been the same.  Thanks for any help or suggestions.

  • DAM I need to evolve (Lightroom vs Aperture)

I have been quite reluctant to change my photo workflow due to my hardware limitations, but now that Im getting a new Macbook Pro new doors are opening for me. So, Id like to change from my current workflow into Lightroom or Aperture. I have looked quite heavily into Aperture, but wanted to make sure I cover all the basis before choosing a solution and who better than Lightroom users to comment on Lightroom!
    My Current Workflow:
Ok, my current workflow revolved around using iView Media Pro to sort, catalog, and caption images. I then use Photoshop to adjust and batch/export images for clients. I use the finder to download CF cards (just drag them to folders organized on the hard drive). I then import those folders into an iView catalog. Oh yeah, Im using iView Media Pro v1.5.7 (really old one) which is super fast and ignores all the RAW files (which for me was a benefit). Once inside iView I used the Batch Rename feature to change the file names... I remove the camera specific tag (in my case LG4Y) and replace it with the shooting date and a card number (20081025_1).
I then go through the photos and tag the keepers (I give them a color label). After I have sorted through the images I copy the tagged images to another folder on my computer for additional processing (this is once place the non-destructive adjustments will be great). I then batch run a photoshop action (scale, sharpen, etc.) on this folder. Once the action has been run, I create a second iView catalog with only the keeper images.
In this second iView catalog I will do my captioning. One of the features that I really liked at iView was the ability to create custom metadata fields (ex. Race Series, Track, Driver, Team, Car, Number, etc.). In the number field I put the car numbers for each photo. I then sort the photos by number and batch caption all of the photos for a given car with the driver, team, etc. at one time. These captions are then exported to an Excel file for importing into a web database.
Once the weekend is over I move the original files from my laptop to a desktop/server. One of the nice things about iView is the ability to search the catalogs without the associated images needing to be on the computer.
    Things I need:
    1. File importing and management: Im planning on using the software to import the photos from CF cards. I would like to rename the files on import (so need the ability to replace LG4Y something I enter for each card). I also plan on letting the software manage the images, but will also need to move the photos off of my laptop and onto my desktop/server. I plan on using the laptop for the main source for the library and only use the desktop for storage.
    2. Image sorting and ranking: I think both pieces of software have what I need here. I do welcome comparisons in this are if people have them. Are both programs equally capable and speedy at the process?
    3. Metadata: This is the most time consuming part of my current workflow. Unfortunately, because the majority of the captions are image specific I cant just batch caption on import. I really need the ability to create custom metadata fields. If these fields can be embedded into the images (or included in sidecar files) all the better. I also need the ability to quickly sort/search by these custom fields so I can add fill-in the other fields. Next, I need to be able to paste the fields across multiple selected images. Lastly, I need to be able to export the metadata into an txt/Excel file for integration with a web database.
    4. Any other really cool things that I should be using or doing differently? So often I get close-minded on what Ive been doing... and dont see other things that I could be doing.
Wow, if you made it this far I give you a round of applause! I am planning on using both the trials, so should get a feel for both pieces of software. Thank you all for info.
    -Todd...

    1. Both programs do this fine. They both have elaborate rename tools that you can already apply at import or after import. Aperture hides the actual file structure a little more but can be used in the same way. They have more of a "iTunes"-like approach to file organization. I'd also point you towards Bridge, which is part of Adobe's creative Suite and does file organization more like a file browser than a database as both Aperture and Lightroom do.
    2. They are both quite good by now. The latest version of Aperture has an amazing quick browse method for very quick initial selection that has to be seen to be believed. It uses the previews in the RAW file or the previews you have generated and just flies through. In my opinion, Lightroom is slightly more flexible in general.
    3. Very comparable. I love Lightroom's spray paint for metadata, but Aperture is quite comparable. However exporting the files for external integration will be tough. There is a great plugin for Lightroom called
LR/transporter that will do this, or you can use database tools on your database file, but neither program does this natively.
    4. If you go for either of these programs you might want to give up on trying to control the filenames/locations etc. too much. Just let the programs take care of it and use collections/projects and metadata integrated with searches to organize your files, just like you would in iTunes. This is a new paradigm for lots of people but it is very liberating and far more flexible than a harddisk/folder based organization paradigm.

  • Color change on exporting from lightroom and saving in Photoshop CS5

I have been having issues with my pictures with color management.    I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5.  I thought over the last 2 years that it was just me.   I have bought a Eizo monitor with a hood, calibrate with a i1display pro, painted my walls gray, updated my strobes from alien bees to elinchrome bxri's.   Updated my sekonic meter to a L 758.   Have done custom white balance with gray card, expodisc, xrite kits.   The problem has been over the years when I work on a picture in lightroom and export it as jpeg or adobe rgb it gets saved to my external hardrive and the colors are really bad !!   You can go back and compare the picture in lightroom to the picture on my iomega external drive and there is a significant difference.   I do some animal photography and I had a dog that had brown fur and when I export it out of lightroom the dogs fur is actually a bright very orange color.  Same thing happens with skin tones.     When I import the photos into lightroom the pictures look ok.       The same thing is happening when I go from lightroom to photoshop the picture color looks good but when I go to File-save as - tiff or jpeg the colors are changing.   It does not matter what color space I am in I have tried them all it is still happening.    If anyone has any insight that would be great.

Thanks everyone for the help.   I have only been doing photography for about 2 years and the color managment part has been my hardest thing to get right.   My monitor ColorEdge CG243W LCD.   Wide color gamut of 98%.  Has a sensor on front of monitor that detects ambient brightness but this will only work if you are in a custom color mode.  Modes are: custom,  sRGB,DCI,EBU, Cal1.   I use the Cal 1 to be able to use the Colornavigator software that came with the monitor.  You also have to be in custom color mode to be able to manually adjust brightness, contrast, temperature on the monitr itself which I do not use because I use the Cal 1 mode.   I was not sure about the digital input signals.   I am on the DVI-I in which this allows digital signal input and analog signal input.    There is a DVI-D mode that allows only digital input only.    Also did not know if I needed to be concerned about setting the frequency that corresponds to the grahic board in the monitor ?    My bandwith was set to normal and now is on wide.   My digital input is for 1920x1200 resolution.   Appicable signal is Vesa CVT RB.  Frequency is 60 Hz.   Yes I did call Eizo twice last year when I got my monitor and did not get very far.     I have also called and spoke to a color specialist at my lab and told him the problems I have been having and he just told me to leave everything in sRGB.   Well I would like to get the most from my monitor's color gamut and when working on my pictures so that is why I am still determined to get this figured out.
I use the i1 Dislpay Pro hardware to calibrate with and the ColorNavigator software.     When calibrating.   I go to create a new target---select enter manually--Gamut ( monitor native--states recommended)--Brightness 100cd---White point (6500k)--set black level (recommemded states mininum 0.2)---gamma 2.20---priority (set automatically to standard, this adjusts gray balance while maintaining the contrast)---then I hit calibrate and it goes through the process.   The results I get are:                                            Target                                               Result
                          Brightness                                        100cd                                              99.9cd

  • Why won't Painter erase a keyword on only ONE image at a time?

This has been driving me crazy - I'd like to delete a keyword on select images. I have hundreds of keywords and many are nested, so sometimes I screw up and need to erase selectively. I thought this problem was a bug, but it has persisted into LR 2.4!
In Grid mode, I select Painter, choose a keyword and search through images where the eraser icon shows. However, if I then click on that image, Lightroom sometimes erases that one image, but more commonly erases four or five at a time! (No, they aren't highlighted.)
Any ideas? I'd sure appreciate them!
    Deb

Thanks, Ian, but now I think it's a bug, not me. Occasionally, erasing with the Painter tool works fine, but more often it's truly a spray can out of control! I am using a tablet, not a mouse. Even if I highlight one image and then click quickly on the Painter, sometimes it will erase 3-6 additional images. I can't figure a rhyme or reason, except it seems more likely when I have hundreds of images showing.
I had wondered if there was a way to set the Painter to only erase one image at a time. If I slide it over images (like spraying), it often is out of control.
    Thanks!

  • Poor Lightroom 5.7 Performance when using part repair tool

    Hi Lightroom pros,
I'm using Lightroom 5.7 for about half a year and are very happy with it. Unless I'm working on photos where I have to use the part repairt tool to much.
I'm specialized in car photograpy and often have to remove dust from the cars paint work and chrome. When I have to work on hughe areas Lightroom becomes slower and slower. I read that the repair tool costs a lot of performance but I'm wondering if I could optimize something or if there is a workaround for that? Because right now its not usable doing one click and waiting 2 minutes...
I'm using the newest Lightroom 64-bit version on a Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit Laptop with an internal SSD drive. LR is installed on that drive and the Catalogue also is stored there. I have 70 GB of free space on that drive, my catalogue is around 5 GB, my Camera Raw Cache Size is 20 GB.
The machine has 16 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7 3 GHz Quadcore processor. My RAW files are stored on an external USB 3.0 Drive (not SSD).
When working on that kind of picutres I usually close as much programms as possible, so that most of the time LR is the only working desktop programm. What seems strange to me is, that even if I'm waiting for minutes for LR to answer, that my processor and RAM are only using about 40% of it's power. The rest seems not to be used by LR?!
I would be really thankful for tipps or ideas how to improve that issue because right now I'm really wasting a lot of time.
    Kind regards
    Torsten

I guess this depends on what you are doing, what type of original files you are using, and your own perception of quality. I would believe that in most cases, if you do all the editing in LR except for the spot removal, get the photo to appear the way you want (except for the spot removal), and then lastly move it to PSE and remove the spots, that there isn't really any noticeable loss of quality.
I must admit I'm not a pro concerning color managment. But I already downloaded the PSE testversion and realized that it is not capable to deal with 16-bit color depth. Wouldn't that be noticeable after the finale spot removal step?
So, you should tell Adobe this, not me. This is a forum for users (like me) to help other users (like you).
I know. I just wanted to emphasize why switching to PS wouldn't be the perfect solution for me (even if I'm considering it).
    Thanks so far!

  • Lightroom 5.5 for Mac Adjustment Brush not working

Hi all, since updating to Lightroom 5.5 for Mac Adjustment Brush has stopped working entirely. I can open the menu and it does display the brush within the menu. When dragging the tool into the image it changes to the mouse arrow which doesn't have any function. Any ideas? Thank you very much for your help. Chris

And- do you actually press or hold down the left-mouse button and drag the cursor on the image? as you would a paint brush. A 'Pin' will appear where you start the brush stroke.
And- Is it possible that you have the switch at the base of the brush panel sliders turned off ?   (The toggle switch on the same line as "Reset" and "Close")
Pressing "O" only turns the overlay mask on/off to give a visual indication 'Where' you have applied the brush.
Pressing "SHIFT+O" changes the colour of the MASK overlay- Red, Green, Grey, Clear
"O" does not affect any editing of the image.

  • I have imported a color picture and trying to use the adjustment brush to turn the background black and white and it isn't working.  I have Lightroom 5.  Any suggestions?

Hello - I have Lightroom 5.  I have imported a color photo.  I am trying to use the Adjustment Brush to change the background to Black and White and leave a portion of the photo in color.  When I begin painting the photo with the Saturation at -100 I don't see any changes to the photo.  I push the "O" key and still nothing.  I have tried to reset the photo, restarted Lightroom and still nothing.  Please help.

Set Flow and Density of the brush to 100
Reduce it where you want the effect to blend.

  • Dark photo in lightroom

Hi guys, when open picture in lightroom,my pictures are 4 stop down and windows photo gallery to but if I open with CS2,paint shop pro, windows media center, pictures are OK (have windows vista)any ideas what is the problem

I would look at Split Toning.
If you want it to look like it is printed on Fucshia paper tone the Highlights.
If you want it to look like it is printed on white paper with Fucshia ink, tone the Shadows.
When you get it like you want, hit the little "+" in the Preset panel header and save it with only Split Toning checked.

  • Will there be an improvement of X-Trans RAW Files Developing in Lightroom?

Hey, dear Ladies and Gentlemen of Adobe!
I am very upset because of your lousy support of Fujifilm X-Trans RAW Files Developing in Lightroom. I spent a lot of money to buy Lightroom. Now this Software is not useable to me because it handles RAW Files of my Camera (Fujifilm X-T1) very unsatisfying.
It is not just me, you can read it all over the Internet. The Fujifilm X-T1 is a state of the art camera and delivers very good Pictures, but why - in the name of god - is lightroom handling it so lousy?!?
You are forcing me to look for another Software. I have tried a lot apps the last few days. And EVERYONE has a better result but Lightroom.
Even the to be discontinued Aperture by Apple has a far better result of developing that raw files. A small one-man Company named "Iridient Developer" has the best result i have ever seen with all that apps! To name them:
I tried Aperture, Iridient Developer, Photoninja, AccuRAW, Capture One, SilkyPix 5, and a lot more. All of them are making better, sharper, crispier Pictures than Lightroom 5.5. Yes, i have the latest Version.
The Pictures are like painted in Watercolors. No Details, no fine Structures. I am heavily disappointed!
I do not expect to get an answer with a satisfying solution. You already have my money. Why care about customers?!?

  • Layers in Lightroom

I'm a professional photographer and am wondering why selective edting with a brush is only available with exposure,  brightness, contrast, saturation, clarity, and sharpness corrections? Why can't I selectively edit with all the editing tools? Do you know how much more useful Lightroom would be if I could selectively edit with a recovery brush, fill light brush, black point brush, vibrance brush, color temp brush, tint brush, color channels brush, sharpening brush, etc? If all these extra tools are useful, and they are, wouldn't they be even more usefull if I could apply them only to the parts of my image that need them instead of the whole darn thing? Bibble Pro 5 can do it. Aperture 3 can do it. Heck, Capture One Pro 6 can do it and it can even apply those effects to layers that can been named. Adobe invented layers and masks. Why cant I have them in Lightroom? Imagine non-destructive editing with no boundaries. Don't rely one your Monopoly with Photoshop's abilities to guaranty professional photographers loyalty. There are some nice options out there catered to photographers. Pretty soon we won't even need Photoshop. You will wan't to make sure that we still purchase Adobe by making Lightroom the best of the best. Its about time Lightroom steps it up. Adobe has the capability to make a truly amazing program to meet photographers needs.
    Thank you.
PS Im not dogging Lightroom. I love lightroom. I'm just making suggestions base on a professional photographers needs.

I also would like to be able to apply highlight recovery selectively, but know not how to do it.  Any tricks (other than applying negative exposure selectively, which does not work for the reason stated)?
I do not expect an answer to these questions, but you never know.
I know exactly what you mean.  I frequently want to recover details and the highlight recovery does the job, but "flattens" the rest of the image, making it a little duller.  One thing you can try is to reduce the overall exposure until the area you want to recover looks okay, and then set a brush with an offsetting positive exposure to paint back in the underexposure.  Unfortunately the local brush exposure algorithm seems to work differently from the overall exposure, so you will have different contrast and you will need a different offset exposure, but it sometimes works.  This is pretty clunky, which just emphasizes the need for localized recovery.  Unfortunately, this really applies to every adjustment you can make in lightroom, hence all the requests for a true layers type implementation.
Here is an example where I ended up creating two files to send to photoshop from lightroom, one unchanged and one with the recovery for a white highlight on the bluebird's "hip" area.  I blended them in photoshop.  The file with the recovery made the rest of the bluebird significantly duller.  I could improve it with increased saturation but I could not reproduce the original colour in the rest of the bluebird.
