Painting in photoshop

I'm kinda new to photoshop so sorry if this is confusing.
I was watching a video tutorial on digital painting in photoshop and I'm confused about something. When the instructor is preparing to add highlights or shadows to an area that already has a flat color laid down, he selects the flat area with the lasso too. Then he does something to clear the "marching ants" but is still able to paint only in the originally selected area with the brush tool. What is he doing to clear the "ants" but maintain the selection? Hope that's not too confusing.
Thanks.

He probably pressed Cmd+H.
Press it again to show the selection border.

  • Best tool for painting in photoshop

    Hello All,
I am trying to paint in photoshop using a mouse and I realized that I can not make the mouse do what I wanted it to do. For example the mouse makes my brush strokes too jerky and I don't get smooth lines and the textures don't come out right either. Is the mouse a good tool for painting in photoshop or should I go with something else? If I should opt for a different tool what is it and where can I find one that's not terribly expensive? Thank you in advance for your response.

Good gracious.  It sounds like you were able to rotate the canvas a more or less exact multiple of 90° or you'd have spotted that it was skewed.  I just tried it using the r shortcut, and while it is doable, it is not particularly easy to rotate the canvas to a point where it could fool you.  What does surprise me, is that while the Options bar shows the degree of rotation while the r key is depressed, I could see nothing on the UI to tell me that the canvas was rotated.  That's something that you might want to start a thread on the Photoshop Feedback page.

Anyway, Escape is the usual way to cancel rotate canvas.

  • Oil Paint In Photoshop Casuses Crash

Just about 80% of the time when I use Oil Paint in Photoshop CC it just goes black and restarts my system and looses my work.  This only happens when using the Oil Paint Filter in Photoshop CC.  Does anyone have a clue as to what might cause this.  Asus P8Z77-V motherboard, Intel CPU i2700k, 32 GB ddr3,  NVidia GForce GTX660 Ti.  1SSD and 6 hdd's.  Run lots of other photo editing software and no problems with them.  Help please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    TIA

Update your graphics driver and configure it suitably. The oil paint filter uses GPU acceleration, so this is crucial.

  • When to use Paint over Photoshop?

Im newer to Photoshop so its easier for me to throw my images into Paint to resize and crop them.
I was curious if other community members ever use Microsoft Paint for tasks and if so what?
Also, should I be doing this or would it benefit me to use Photoshop for resizing and croping images?  I plan on using Photoshop but I rarely have it open since I mostly use the development programs within CS5 and it takes magnitudes longer to open Photoshop than Paint.  But even with Fireworks running and the image attended for Fireworks I still through my image into paint because it seems faster.  Am I dumb? Should I give up the paint? Some hot keys for this task probably would be better ahhhh... any insight?
    Thanks,

I do not think that I have used MS Paint, since about Windows 2.0. I did not even realize that it was still around.
I just use PS for everything, with the exception of JPEG's, with bum header info, that PS will not open. Then, I just use either ThumbsPlus, or IrfanView, to Open, then Save with proper header info.
I do not have any data on the Scaling (Resizing) algorithms in Paint, but would think that those in PS would be better. They do offer you a good range of choices, but maybe Paint has similar? Same when Cropping. What part of those operations do you find easier in Paint?
Though I use PS a lot, and have for a very long time, image editing software is but a tool in a process. Using the right tool, or the one that the artist is most comfortable with, is the trick. I use Painter (now Corel) for a lot of treatments, but almost always finish up in PS. Over the decades, PS has become closer to Painter, than in days past. Still, there are treatments that I want to apply in Painter, and part of those choices will be my personnal comfort level. I might have something very similar in my newer PS, but if I know every step by heart in Painter, my comfort level rises.
Use what you like for different operations, but I would do a visual check with an operation, like Scale/Resize. Do the same exact operation in each program, using the same base Image, and the same exact settings. Compare the results of the two programs critically.
    Good luck,

  • Please help for Oil Paint In Photoshop CS6

    I am using windows 8 32-bit ..
when i select the oil paint in filter ..it's says like this
when i go back to the performance there is no option to select ...i updated driver(with Driver Reviver software) but i didn't get this in graphic processor!!
    here my driver
There is no new driver from manufacture's site !!
And also lighting effects can't select it !!

All you can do is contact Intel and ask how to update the driver.
But if I recall correctly, that old chipset won't support the GPU features anyway (too underpowered).

  • Having issues with painting in Photoshop CS5, can you help?

    Hi,
I'm having issues with painting. At the end of a brushstroke (not the stroke option), I see a little "dot" that appears, instead of a fine end. Do you know what I'm talking about, and how to fix it?
    Thanks!

This may sound strange, but try starting your brush strokes at the top of the page.  That way the tendency is for the stylus tip to lift at the end of the stroke.  Going bottom to top tends to push the tip into the tablet.   You could also look at Brush Shape Dynamics (F5).  It looks like you have Size jitter set to pen Pressure, but set the minimum siz to 0% - if not already set so.  Then it is a matter of lots of practice, and perhaps making full use of the CS5 rotate screen feature (r) to keep your brush strokes at whatever is the optimum angle for you.

  • How do I draw/write/paint in Photoshop with my Touch Screen?

    I have Photoshop CC (2014) Version 15.2.2
I can use gestures and move/pan/zoom the canvas but I can't use the actual brush tool on the canvas or anything.
    The cursor just disappears.
Is there a way to fix this? An add-on or a particular driver?
Seems like the type of trouble you'd have to have manually programmed into the application with the intention of rendering those sorts of results.

It all depends on your device configuration.  Windows has Mouse preferences in the Control Panel and for Touch Displays there are preferences separately in the Control Panel as well.  But that depends on Windows's support of the monitor.  If you have a touch display set up with a Mac Pro or as a secondary monitor for a MacBook or iMac then I imagine those things would be found in System Preferences in OS X.  Have you looked in any of those places?  Have you also looked at the setup guide for your monitor?

  • I m learning matte painting with photoshop cs5 I need tablet??

    Hi!
I m Graphic Designer now I m studying on Matte Painting, few months I have confusion about Tablets, Tablet PCs, Graphic Pens..etc. please give me any suggestions on what are they which product will help me on matte painting…my budget is from 50 to 200$(dollars)
    Thank you

I second the suggestion for the Intuous4 tablet, I started out with the Bamboo and quickly outgrew it. In about 6 months I realized I really need the tilt capabilities for painting, not long after that I realized I also needed the Intuous4 art pen with barrel rotation. The Bamboo is a good tablet but for painting you really need the tilt capabilities lacking in the Bamboo and the higher pressure sensitifity comes in handy as well. The Bamboo is much less money BUT can turn out to be much more when you decide to move up to the Intuous4, it's more cost effective to just get the Intuous4 to begin with.

  • Photoshop painting black when I'm not using black?

Okay so this just started yesterday. I was painting in photoshop and starting to color what I had drawn but for some reason it starts painting some black into the color I'm using. I have no idea why it's doing that. I do everything in separate layers and I hadn't even colored anything in black yet as you can see in the pic below. I do use a wacom tablet but I dont think it's doing it because of that. I just tested that theory by using my regular mouse and it still paints black. I do have to add, it's not the whole thing that gets painted black, it's just certain parts. Also, I use PS cs6. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Have a look at the brush mode in the Options bar
[EDIT]  Just to add that if you had tried painting outside that beige colour, I think you'd have guessed straight away that it was a blend mode problem.

  • Photoshop as a Paint app?

I recently became aware that some (many?) use PS as their paint app..even ones who'd used Painter, ArtRage, etc. The paintings I've seen created in Photoshop are breathtaking, truly.
My question: can anyone who's made this transition, or who always painted in Photoshop speak to any things I might need to be aware of in using PS for Paint?
I've done my share of retouching and photo manipulation in Photoshop, never to "Paint." My computer paint experience has been with Painter and ArtRage, and a couple of open source paint apps.
    Thank you for any thoughts!
    w

    thank you, Curt.
As I mentioned, I am experienced with Photoshop for retouching and creative..."surgery" to photos and other images.
I'd like to gather comments from those who have used Photoshop as a paint tool, especially if they've used the others, such as Painter..
    Thanks!

  • Do I need a dedicated graphics card for my laptop if I mainly use Photoshop CS6 to paint?

I'm looking to buy a laptop and having a dedicated graphics card is obviously more expensive, but is it necessary for painting on Photoshop CS6 without lagging? I use a lot of layers, adjustments, masks, and large brushes, but that's mostly it, also I don't spam the undo button.

    havnor wrote:

LOL, those are very compute-intensive operations.  That's basically saying "I need the most powerful computer I can find" to run Photoshop.
It's hard to generalize an answer to your specific question, because not all GPUs or systems are created equal.  If I had to generalize, I'd say you should try to avoid DUAL GPU systems, in which an Intel and some other brand are combined to try to deliver power saving and high performance capabilities.  Photoshop traditionally doesn't really like that kind of arrangement, and forum members often advise folks with dual GPU systems who are experiencing problems to just disable one of them (usually the lesser one) anyway.
Keep in mind that a laptop isn't going to be able to achieve as good performance as a desktop for a resource hungry application like Photoshop, yet will be more expensive.  You really will want a high-end machine (possibly even mobile workstation class) to paint in the manner you describe.
I invite others who use modern laptops to chime in here and relate their actual experiences, as well as provide information on their specific configurations.

  • What computer(s) do you recommend for photoshop painting?

    Hi,
I have a 4-year Packard Bell laptop computer that running on its last legs. So it's time for me to buy a new computer. I plan on mainly using it for digital painting with photoshop cs6. Therefore a computer that's very compatible with the newest versions of photoshop and graphic tablets like intous 5 is critically important. I am, however, terribly indecisive when it comes to choosing which one as there are so many and I'm not exactly tech savvy. I do have a short list of preferences though, that should help narrow down the dicision-making a bit:
    - desktop computer
    - large adjustable monitor
    - compatible with photoshop cs6 + premium graphic tablets
    - no Apple computer
    - under $1500
It´s been suggested that I "build" my own computer, however this I do not want to do.
    Thanks!

I believe JJ got a refurbished Dell Precision T5600 6 core workstation there not long ago and it sounds like he likes it very much.  It's no surprise -they're great systems.
Mine is a refurbished Precision T5500 dual processor system (12 cores in all) that I got a year ago from an eBay reseller, and because I spent a little more than JJ and got dual high-end processors my CPU performance even today ranks 11th highest on the Passmark CPU Mark list of all-time fastest multiple CPU systems.
The point is that these systems are amazing performers, being outpaced only by systems that cost thousands more.  They're not really cheap, but the price is actually reasonable since they're used/refurbished.  And they're about as future proof as any system you'll find.
Both JJ and I actually got 3 year Dell warranties with our systems (correct me if I'm wrong, JJ).
SquirrelMonkey88, your task is now to learn and understand everything about computer systems, so that you can pick a system that fits you well.  You're doing the right thing, asking experts.
Generally speaking, you might look for a platform that has the right processor(s), and maybe all the RAM you'll need, but with the cheapest possible video card.  Then you can replace the video card with one that will run Photoshop and the Creative Suite well, and maybe add disk drives.
Here are just some quick examples, available right now:
    1.  Precision T5600 with 6 core Xeon E5-2620, 16 GB RAM, and 500GB hard drive - $1399.98.  Add a 256 GB OCZ Vector SSD for $270 more, and an ATI Radeon HD 7750 for another $105.  You can add a second processor, more RAM, more disk drives or SSDs in the future to expand the system.
    2.  Precision T5500 with 2 x 6 core Xeon E5645, 24 GB ECC RAM, and 1TB hard drive - $1899.99.  Add an ATI Radeon HD 7850 for another $200.  Add more disk drives/SSDs in the future.
You could go directly to Dell's refurbished sales site as well and possibly find similar deals.

  • How to activate a pen tablet on photoshop on a All-in-one computer [touch screen]?

I have a all in one computer touch screen- and I can use a pen tablet right on the screen, it's active- but when I go on PSCS6 and try to use the pen tablet, it is not active onto the screen- where do you go to activate it?? Can you?

That is the question I asked you.  I think you will find that your display only functions as a touch device.   My old Wacom Intuos 3 Tablet was just a tablet device.  My new Intuos 5 Touch is both a Tablet and touch device. When the pen is in close proximity with the tablet surface touch is turned of and it functions as a tablet.  The Wacom device driver has some Touch functions the can be configured to work with Photoshop.  I could configure touch so I could finger paint in Photoshop. Photoshop does not have its own touch support and touch settings.   If you can find a device driver for your displays touch feature that use wintab api. to support a pen interface you may have a chance,
