Painting on Shape layer mask not working correctly

I created a Gradient layer and assigned a vector mask. I then added a mask channel. When I activate the mask channel the forground/background color switch to black and white, but if I attempt to swap the colors, either by clicking the "Swap colors" icon or "Shift-X" the LAYER color changes to black. I am unable to simply paint with black or white on the mask channel. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug in PSCC 14.2?
This process works as expected n PSCS6.

Is the question meant seriously?
Is the Layer Mask actually selected in the Layers Panel?
Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?

Mask not working correctly?

Hi every one!
I have this problem with my mask not working properly, i have an image, and it has an red fruit sitting on a table,
i have to make the picture sepia using an adjustment layer ( my lecturer says it MUST be done that way)
but leaving the fruit as red as possible. So when i do this i MUST use the layer mask provided by the
adjustment layer, but what is happening is the orange is going a very faded red ( but not quite sepia), the table BG does go sepia..
so its KIND OF working but not really.

Check your mask by OPTION CLICKING on the mask icon on the specific layer. This will show you a greyscale mask. BLACK hides, WHITE REVEALS. SO obviously grey does half of each! So if you dont want the apple to be affected by the layer mask you must paint it BLACK in the mask of that adjustment layer.

Mask not working correctly in swf

Hai Friends,
I am trying to do a simple masking which works correctly in
fla but when viewed in swf the text which is masked is not
seen..What i did is first i wrote some text converted it to
movieclip then in another layer i did draw a rectangle with some
color and right clicked the rectangle and masked it When viewed in
fla the masked text is viewable but when converted to swf the text
is not seen Is it some problem with Flash Can you please help me...

Text is not able to be masked in Flash by default.
You CAN do this IF you embed your text (or simply break it
apart into vectors if it doesn't need to be dynamic).
To break apart - select your text and hit Ctrl+B twice (Cmd+B
on Mac). This will make the text vectors, thus negating the
problem.
Otherwise, you need to embed the fonts in 2 ways. First, if
you like, you can click the "Embed fonts" button in the properties
panel, and select what to embed. OR, you can go to the Library's
drop-menu and select "New Font" - choose your font, and click OK.
Either of these methods embeds your font. BUT, there is one more
step. You need to give your text box an instanceName, go to the
actions panel, and enter the following:
myTextBox.embedFonts = true;
This will finish the embed process to allow the masking (and
alpha changes) to work for the text.

What do you do when painting on a layer mask with the correct color dosen't work?

I have been trying to do some compositing but when i paint with white on a black layer mask or black on a white layer mask, NOTHING HAPPENS. What should I be looking for? Is there an adjustment that needs to be set a certain way? I would also like to know how you open multiple images in one document with each image on it's own layer. Thanks...

Everything is set correctly... still nothing.
I want to use a texture and an image. I have them both in the same document, but the only way to get the texture to allow the image to show through is to reduce the opacity. That's not the look I want. I tried clipping the two different images together, but then I could only see the photo itself and no texture. I just don't understand why when I set things correctly they don't work.
One other question if I may? Everything, all of a sudden is opening in Preview instead of with PS as it has always been in the past. I don't recall changing any settings. What should I look for to make PS my default...
Oh and one more thing. When I click on Safari photoshop goes missing and Safari shows. If I click on photoshop then Safari goes missing. This is INCREDIBLY annoying and I don't know why it's doing that. Both these things started at the same time. I'm on a Mac.

Inverted layer mask not working

I havent used PS much of late but in CS6 when layer masking the technique I used to use doesnt seem to work anymore. I would have two layers. The top layer I would put a layer mask. Then I would select all and delete hit the delete button so the mask would turn black and invert. Then instead of painting black over white to reveal the bottom layer I would paint white over black to bring my top layer back. I liked doing it like this. But its not working now. When I paint with white on the black mask nothing happens?? I tried inverting in the properties but makes no diff. What am I doing wrong?

Check the blending mode on your brush. It may be set to darken or some other blend mode than normal. As a side note, you can invert a layer mask be making sure it's selected and press ctrl/cmd-i. You can also create a mask where everything is hidden by pressing alt/opt then clicking on the add layer mask icon in the layers pallet.

CS5 Layer Mask not working. Hide all not hiding

I need some help here. CS5 on win 7 64 bit. Duplicate layer and apply a layer mask (alt click) and it does not hide the layer. Just applying a mask and painting with black also does not hide. If I hide the background layer then the mask appears as the white and grey checkerboard pattern, no solid color. Am I missing something simple?

The checkerboard indicates places where your entire document is transparent through and through.
I suspect your mask is working as it's supposed to, and that when the background layer is visible you're just seeing through to the duplicate layer below - which by definition will not look any different on your display.
Try this:
Add a brightly colored solid color fill layer just below the layer you're masking. Now see what the mask does to the upper layer.

Black brush on layer mask not working. Please help/

I have been using CS6 for a while now. CS 6 decided that I can't use my black brush on a white layer mask. At all. I can use the white one on a black mask, but not the black one I. I restarted the computer, but I am annoyed. Has anyone has this problem? Solutions? I am so over my head with photos to finish...this was going to be my big weekend to work at night.

Look at Options bar. Is the brush in Normal blending mode?

Alt + click on layer mask not working/enabled

Im wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and managed to solve the issue!
Basically, when I go to view the layer mask by holding alt and clicking on the layer mask it doesn't function. Along with this problem, when I go to toggle my adjustment layers on and off, by holding alt and clicking on the eye symbol next to the background layer... again this doesn't work.
Im not sure if I have accidently clicked on something that has disabled these functions or its just a bug.
Please, can anyone help with this?

Yeah I tried both Alt keys, that wasn't the problem. I could use both Alt keys to do shortcuts and they worked, just didn't work when it came to toggling off and on the adjustment layers and also viewing my mask, when Alt clicking on it.
I even tried opening the file in an older version of photoshop and still had the same problem.
I was about to re-install the program or reset it back to its default settings... then decided to do a selection of the image, cut it out and pasted it into a new document and then dragged my adjusment layers over to the new file. Hey presto! the functions worked.
Think it was just a case of the image or file in general becoming corrupt or just having some sort of bug.

Layer Mask not working

I have Photoshop CS5 and until tonight, I could add a layer mask, paint it with a black paint brush, and it would show the layer underneith. Not, the black paint brush does nothing. This is so frustrating, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the product and it was of no help. I must be doing something wrong. I checked the help article on this and followed the instructions carefully, except the part about Layer, Layer Mask, reveal all, because reveal all was grayed out. Any suggestions?

That will take a real bite out of editing a Layer Mask, as will having the Blendin Mode of the Brush set to something, besides Normal.

Brush Tool/Layer Mask not working. Please help!

When I use the brush tool on the layer mask after using the quick selection tool and refining the mask, the black doesn't do anything and the white erases the image.

Look at Options bar. Is the brush in Normal blending mode?

Hard to guess on this type of question at you are not offering any tip on what you are doing. A screen shot might help to see how you have things set.

Shape Builder tool not working on shapes in a clipping mask

Hello again,
Why is the Shape Builder Tool don't work on shapes inside a Clipping Mask? The Pathfinder does work but for the Shape Builder Tool: NADA!

Thank you for answering. No it will work correctly. The Pathfinder work inside a clipping path and in any situation but not the Shape Builder Tool. Unless this is normal, I think that the specialist at Adobe should have a look at this annoying behavior and try to release an upgrade with this behavior corrected in a near futur.

If you release the Clipping Mask and try the Shape Builder tool then, does it still balk at making the shape?

strange. same stats here but im getting intermittent.... sometimes i can use the mask and the effect is only limited to the masked area. most of the time the masked area is ignored and the effect is applied to the whole image

Am I Missing Something Obvious? Layer Mask Not Confined to Selection.

Hello, I really hope I am not missing anything obvious.
I am working on a .psd in Photoshop CC in which I used a selection to precisely remove a portion of a layer in a layer mask. The problem is that it is removing a percentage of the opacity in the non selected area. The brush has 100% Opacity, 100% Flow and is in Normal Mode. The layer has 100% Opacity, 100% Fill, and is in Normal Mode. I have tried restarting Photoshop and starting over from scratch. Here is an image of the issue.
My only other concern is that on Friday we had a power outage due to lightning and PS CC closed unexpectedly. Could my PS CC be corrupted? My computer has restarted since then. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks!

The power outage should not have corrupted your Photoshop to cause this to happen. Worst that could have happened is Photoshop was forced to quit and your preferences did not get save for yourt panel layout and prefertence settings.
Is your brush filled with 100 black, the swatch looks dark but you may be at 90% black.? Your screenshot looks fine though as if the mask is working correctly, can you post a screenshot that better shwos the problem.

1st Gen iPod touch not working correctly?

I have a 1st generation 8GB iPod Touch. It's not working correctly.
My biggest problem is that, unexplaiably, certain areas of the screen don't seem to register touch anymore. There is a sort of "L" shape on the left and bottom edges of the screen that won't register touch, making it impossible to move applications to the previous page on the home screen and making it hard to use the keyboard/buttons while in portrait mode. It's extremely frustrating to try to change the volume while playing a song, as I now have to either put the iPod in sleep mode then double tap the home button or flip it to cover flow and double tap the home button to do it.

This is a screenshot of the working/non-working areas that I made using the Whiteboard application. The white area that you see (excluding the little half circles of black which are extended brush strokes and not actually working areas) is the area that doesn't work. I can't seem to figure out why it happened, as I've never dropped or otherwise damaged it. It just happened one day, and I don't know why.
But I can't fix it. I've tried everything. Upgrading (I'm now running iPhone OS 3.0 which still didn't fix the problem.) didn't work, restoring didn't work, deleting everything and restoring from factory settings didn't work.
I'm also having a few other problems as well, though they're not as bad. My home button seems to stop working sometimes and sometimes the entire screen witll stop registering touch until I put the iPod to sleep and turn it back on. It also seems to go a lot slower than usual.
My iPod is less than a year old. Can you help?

I had a very similar problem this past weekend with my 1G 8GB iPod touch. But with me, just the left side of the screen wasn't registering my touch. I could still access the bottom section, which you cannot.
The good news for me is that I fixed it and I hope it works for you as well. What fixed it for me was resetting all my settings. To do this, go to the settings icon, then click on general, and then on the very bottom is reset. Choose "reset all settings."
Apparently this is different than a restore through iTunes, which you tried. I also tried that earlier and it did not help.
Of course, the reset solution I used relies on you being able to access all of the correct buttons, so I hope you can!
Please let us know if this works for you. If not, since it is less than a year old, it is still under warranty. Contact Apple and see what they can do.
