Pairing Fonts

Hi everyone,
I could be wrong about this thing alltogeather, although this could be a great feature for me.
I think I read once that it's possible to define font pairs.
What I mean is, that when I sellect a certain Hebrew font and then change the keyboard to English, instead of getting the default font, I get a font I defined, that is visually compatible with the Hebrew font I chose, and vice versa.
Now, I could be all wrong about this and this feature is not available, and I only misunderstood or not remembering correctly something I read.
Hope someone can shed some light on this.
Thanks in advance...

I've seen people make composite fonts for these purposes. Composite fonts, where you take glyphs for one script from one font and glyphs from another script from another font, are usually used with Chinese fonts (for which the Latin-script glyphs are traditionally garbage). But I've also seen composite fonts used with SE Asian and Arabic scripts, where you run into the same problem when working with multilingual documents - ugly Latin-script glyphs. So that might be what you're looking for.
The only problem with using composite fonts is that usually the interface is only in Japanese and Chinese. World Tools Pro from in-tools.com will give you a good English interface for making your own composite fonts.
Alternately, I sometimes use GREP styles to define all glyphs within a given Unicode range to use another font.
But, really, the best solution is to just pick a Hebrew font that has attractive Latin glyphs, where a good type designer has made all of these choices for you.   Adobe's recent RTL and East Asian offerings have been surprisingly good in this regard. I just have to call out Huronia by Ross Mills here, because it's a font that is decidedly not mainly intended for Latin-script usage, but the Latin glyphs are great, and do a really good job of looking good next to the Inuktitut. I'd argue that this is what you want - one really good font that has the right language coverage for your projects. Everything else is just a duct-tape hack.

  • Some fonts won't import into font book

I am importing fonts, ttf files, into Font Book from the Vault of the discontinued font manager Fontcase. A few have brought up error messages, and I do not import them. But many more, maybe 20%, simply do not get imported; no error message appears. Some are a decade or more old, but all are ttf files and were imported into Fontcase without difficulty, back when.
Same thing happens whether I drag the fonts into FB or double click on the ttf file itself and click Import.
Why might this be, and what can I do about it?
    Using Font Book 5.0.1, OS X 10.9.4.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

From Kurt's excellent article (linked below).
Fonts which cannot be used in OS X:
Apple bitmapped fonts from OS 7.5 and earlier
Linux Type 1 PostScript - Paired fonts with .pfa and .afm extensions.
Type 3 PostScript - A fairly short lived PostScript variant. They allowed for the full use of the PostScript language such as shading, color and fill patterns. However, they lacked hinting, an important typography attribute. Obsolete.
Old, very old third party bitmapped fonts. Way back before TrueType or Type 1 PostScript fonts. There were no outline vector fonts for printing. Each point size for a typeface had to be built as a high resolution bitmap file from a companion program, or purchased separately. Good riddance.

  • Font Issue!, not just an a regular ole issue!

Ok....I've started doing web design and development at a Application, Software, Website & Server, Hardware company. That's right we manage and house servers for local businesses, intergrate our IMS software for companies and customize for their needs, do hardware fixes, and implement websites that use our software (IMS... aka.... Intergrated Management System)....and trying to find some sort of fix with fonts
PROBLEM: We are running Vista, Windows 7, and OSx6.4 (just me, the rest are ALL PCs) and having a hard time trying to figure out a PROPER WAY of managing our Fonts throughout all the different OS's. This is probably not gonna be an easy fix if any at all, but you can see where we are running into obvious issues. We are all using CS4, but cross-platform is where the issues are.
Any suggestions on a way that would make it easier, than just serving up the fonts on a particular folder on our server to be installed onto a different machine. My first thought is the "PACKAGE" utility in InDesign, to collect fonts and images to save with the actual Native file in the development directory.
Is there any sorda program that will do this for any CS program, and also cross-platform. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! And I know I probably left out pertinent stuff that would help in answering the question properly, so please ask if that is the case
    Thanks for your time
    Drew

What you need to do is use fonts that are cross platform compatible. That leaves out Mac Type 1 PostScript and older Mac suitcase style TrueType fonts.
You can use these without any type of conversion. They can be copied from one OS to the other and used as is:
OpenType - fonts ending in .otf , .ttf and .ttc
TrueType - fonts ending (also) in .ttf and .ttc
Windows Type 1 PostScript - paired fonts ending in .pfm and .pfb
For the latter, Win T1 PS fonts will only work on the Mac if you place them in a specific location. And then only with the Adobe CS2 apps or newer. To use Win T1 PS fonts on the Mac, put them in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ folder. If a folder named Fonts does not exist in that location, just create it and you will be able to use those fonts in the Adobe apps.
You can use Mac Type 1 PostScript fonts and legacy TrueType, but you'd have to convert them to one of the above formats first. OpenType is the best choice as it will support 16 bit fonts (more than 256 glyphs).

  • Download  free Tempus Sans ITC  for version 10.9

I am trying to download Tempus
Sans ITC Regular font to my IMac ox version  10.9 but got a message that it won't open on this version.  Does anyone know if there is a free version that will work?

Since Adobe created Type 1 PostScript, they know how to read any version of them. From my font article:
Windows Type 1 PostScript - Paired fonts with .pfb and .pfm extensions. Normally, these fonts have never been able to be used on the Mac. Not in OS9 or OS X. Technically, you still can't. You can't open them with any font manager or use them by directly placing the fonts in one of OS X's or OS 9's standard Fonts folders. But the Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), starting with the CS2 suite, can indeed read these fonts. Place them in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ folder and you will be able to use Windows Type 1 PostScript fonts with the Adobe programs. The CS4 through CC versions do not create the Fonts folder mentioned. But all you have to do is go to the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ folder and create a new folder named Fonts. An example of a Windows Type 1 PostScript font is as follows:
    DSSCR___.PFM
    DSSCR___.PFB
This particular font is Dorchester Script MT. All Windows Type 1 fonts consist of two files for one complete typeface. A .pfm file for the font metrics, and a .pfb file for the binary data. You must have both in order for the font to work. If there were a bold version of this font, you would have another uniquely named matching pair of .pfm and .pfb files.
This will still not help any other part of the OS see Windows T1PS fonts. Only the Adobe apps will be able to use them, and only if you place them specifically in the location noted.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Missing kerning pairs in Adobe Fonts

Wow, I just realised that Adobe fonts don't include the following kerning pairs: Ws, Wz. Those pairs are very common in my language (polish). There are plenty of common words like in polish starting with 'Ws' or 'Wz': 'Wszystko (=everything), Wstać (=to get up), Wschód (=east), Wszędzie (=everywhere), Wsadzić (=to put into), Wzór (=pattern), Wznieść (=to put up), Wzrastać (=to grow up) and many more.
This seems to be a massive oversight from Adobe. If some font support Central Europe glyphs, then it should also support kerning pairs that are typical for those languages.
Even such great font like Minion Pro doesn't support 'Ws', 'Wz'.
    How could this be?

Have you tried re-creating Photoshop preferences:
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Note: If this process doesn't work for you while you're using a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard, attach a wired keyboard and retry.
Important: If you re-create the preferences by manually deleting the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings file, make sure that you only delete that file. If you delete the entire settings folder, you also delete any unsaved actions or presets.
Reinstalling Photoshop does not remove the preferences file. Before reinstalling Photoshop, re-create your preferences.
NEW Video! Julieanne Kost created a video that takes you through two ways of resetting your Photoshop preferences. The manual preference file removal method is between 0:00 - 5:05. The keyboard shortcut method is between 5:05 - 8:18. The video is located here:

Important: Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If  you require access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting, see How to access hidden user library files.

  • Not able to change font

    Hi ,
We need to print some text data in printer. As we print a report, with numbers, and columns, we need font widht to be constant for all the charecters for producing properly aligned reports. [ like in courier or monospace fonts]. In the code below, I am not able to set the font for my printer. In the print() method, I tried to set font as monospace for the graphics object, but it did not have any effect. It looks like it always print with Ariel font. For displaying in layouts, it works find. But not with printer. Please help.

  • Can you automate actions involving pairs of images?

    Hi everyone,
    This is my situation:
I want to take a headshot and a name and then paste both onto a background image and then save out the result.  But I want to do this with many pairs of headshots and names.  The headshot and name are each in separate images, and the background image is a separate image that will be the same for every pair.  Using batch commands I know I can easily insert the headshots into the same background, or the names into the same background, but is there a way to insert both the name and headshot into this background and save out the results?  From what I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this without getting into scripting.
I'm using Photshop CS5.5 with Windows.
    Any answers would be appreciated.
    Thanks and regards

Creating data driver graphics is one way to create the kind of collage you want. If you have all the information in a database or spread sheet they can mostlikelt create the CSV files you need to go with the template you create.
As been pointed out an other way to do it is with Photoshop Scripting however you need some to design some collage process.   I put togeter a set of Script to populate Collage templates that follow four simple rules.  It would be very easy to create a template for two images. The images can be stamped with the files name in one of 9 positions.    The Ordere in which images will be populated from a source image folder can be controlled ny adding a sequence number followed by a # as a prefix to the file name  example  "100#John Doe Jr..jpg" "101#Bozo The Clown.psd"  "200#George Washing.CR2" 201#Marther Washington.tif"  Using the BatchMultiImageCollage scripu you select the two Image protrait template point to the source folder point at the target folder check that you want name stamps select the font and position. The prefix and extention will not be part of the name stamp.
    Photo Collage Toolkit
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.

  • Missing some fonts in CS 5 and Lion...

Installed OS X Lion. I have my own version of Helvetica with special kerning pairs in the screen fonts dating back to that by-gone era. Both the Helteticas supplied by Apple and my "Agency Fit" fonts used to show in the font menu. Now, only mine do (which is betther than only Apple's showing!). Both fonts show in Illustrator. One more thing...I seem to only be able to select Helvetica Medium...Regular seems to be gone from both program's menus. If I disable one of the fonts with Font Book, the other will show up in the menu.
    I'm using CS 5.
Is there a place I can submit this as a bug on Adobe's site? (I know, Apple is responsible for this... Still, Illustrator seems to be okay, InDesign is not.)

    Interesting trick, Steve. Thank you!
For what it is worth, here is what is happening now.
In Apple's Font Book, it appears that although both Helveticas are shown as on, that is, both are black text, the font with the yellow caution symbol is also listed as inactive (in the Information pane). So, it appears that Apple is attempting to resolve duplicates on its own and is using the user's fonts over their own.
In InDesign, I only have access to my fonts, not the System's duplicates. I suppose I could try making duplicates of the System fonts and putting them the InDesign font folder if I really wanted both...
In Ilustrator, I see two Helveticas listed, as I would want. But, only the first one sticks; that is, the check mark next to the font always remains on the top font, never allowing me to select the second font, from the Options bar. But! if I go to the main menu at the top of the screen and select Type > Font > Helvetica, I can choose either Helvetica, even though Font Book indicated that one is inactive.
Like I said, for what it is worth...

I've been able to create project jar files in Eclipse by selecting Export from the File menu, then choose Java - Jar file - and provide the required information, name, destination folder etc. But when I do this, I do not export other jars on the build path this way nor do I expect to do this. I am only concerned with creating a jar file of my own work. A jar file does not "contain" other jar files. If the jar file contains the main method, and requires other jars for it's execution, then you may wish to include a reference to required jars on the class path entry of the Manifest file of the jar file you create. I'm not sure how to create a Manifest file in eclipse though..

  • Photoshop CS5 Crashes on Start Up after Snow Leopard Font Update

    Great!
Updated what I thought would be a simple update to the Snow Leopard Font 'thingy' did the update and install then went back to doing some work
in Photoshop CS5 - only for it not to boot up as it did fine before...
Luckily I still have CS4 installed and that opens and runs fine.

It's a long shot, but it's possible that Photoshop's attempt to characterize/initialize OpenGL is immediately crashing your video driver.  Is there anything special about your video setup (e.g., dual cards, etc.)?  What card(s) do you have?
More on OpenGL and GPU operation in general here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html
I know of no way to get Photoshop to allow you to configure OpenGL via a Preferences dialog at startup (though there are ways by holding particular keys down to configure other things, such as scratch disks and the extra plug-ins folder).  There is a registry tweak that will block Photoshop from trying to use your GPU, but Adobe doesn't want that info given out freely.

  • UI font size in dreamweaver is too small - can it be changed?

    Hi,
I just purchased Dreamweaver CS6 and found to my dismay that the UI font sizes are so small that I need a magnifying glass to read them. At least they give the option for larger UI font sizes in Photoshop, but not in dreamweaver - as far as I can see.
This was one of the reasons I abandoned dreamweaver after version 8 (Macromedia).
Adobe really needs to sort this problem out for different screen sizes and accessibility. Even freeware authors get it right.

I agree, but it is not only DW that is a problem, most of the applications that I use, including this forum, have the same problem.
My solution, I wear a pair of IT-glasses, sort of like reading glasses that have been further refined for the screen.
My solution prior to that is as follows
    Right-click on the desktop
    Select "Screen Resolution"
In the Screen Resolution dialog, there are 3 options in the lower center.
Click "Make text and other items larger or smaller"
Chose one of the 3 pre-set sizes <OR>
In the left column, click "Set Custom text size (DPI)"
Then scale the ruler until the text size suits your needs.

I am a bit disappointed that Bluetooth doesn't seem to be very mature in the iPhone. But maybe I'm just clueless as to how to get it working, and, once it's working, it will be good.
My problem is that I can't even discover my iPhone (I have scanned using my iMac with the Bluetooth Setup Assistant app as well as with my other phone, a Samsung SGH-X680). Actually, I was able to discover it once with my iMac and then proceeded with the pairing process. The assistant displayed a sequence of digits in large font and said that I should make sure that same number appears on the iPhone. But nothing happened on the iPhone, it seemed oblivious.
My iPhone's Bluetooth settings are "ON" and it says "Now Discoverable". It also seems to be unable to discover any other devices (like my other phone and the iMac, which both have Bluetooth enabled and are set to be discoverable), it will just say "Searching…" for minutes on end without finding anything.
Please let me know what, if any, options there are that will let me exchange files between my computer and my iPhone via Bluetooth. (I am aware that I can exchange files via USB cable.)
    Thanks.

Thank you for the clarification. I find it very stupid that I can't transfer files with Bluetooth. I hope a future software update will add Bluetooth file sharing.

  • Maximum font size script

Howdy all!  Have a tricky question. Using LiveCycle ES 8.2
Working on a form, I've got a pair of linked text fields (global data linked).
These text fields are static in size, but I need the values typed into them to shrink when it fills up the visible area of the text field.  I can't set the value font size to 0pt from the start.  It makes the initial font size too big for the value.  The font size needs to remain at 16 pt until the value fills up the field's visible area, then it needs to switch over to 0pt (hence triggering a full event).
    I've tried using a full event with the following code;
    this.font.size = "0pt";
But it won't fire.  I wonder if there is a limitation to the what the full event can trigger.  I can use the change event or even the exit event if I have to.
I've also tried a calculate event with the following script:
    if (this.rawValue.length > 48) {
         this.font.size = "0pt";
    else {
         this.font.size = "16pt";
But this did not fire as well.  And yes, I have the scripting set to Javascript...not Formcalc.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Using ES3 and just a 0 font initially (with all scripting removed) I get the following, for a short name;
    Which seems about the right.
    And for a long name
My version of your form is here https://sites.google.com/site/livecycledesignercookbooks/home/bizcard_form.1.pdf?attredire cts=0&d=1
There have been some changes since ES8, including a default font size added to the form properties, but not sure that is a factor as the largest font used in this sample is still smaller than the default.
Is this what you are seeing?

  • Fully embedding fonts in PDF

    Hi,
I had a piece of information but I can't seem to find it anymore so I have to ask ...
This is about understanding limitations of fully embedding fonts in a PDF (from Indesign Server). Actually it's about one limitation in particular. I know fonts with licensing issues or fonts that are marked "embedded not allowed" will not be embedded. Also, there is a threshold that I need to set.
So, I recall reading somewhere that Indesign will not fully embed "standard" fonts. Is that correct and what is this standard fonts category?
Oh, reading through some posts, I noticed lots of people and experts ask why does one need fully embedded fonts. That's a good question and I don't know the root reason but in my case it seems that some regulatory agencies (in the life sciences/pharma domain) require PDFs with fully embedded fonts.
    Many thanks
    Cristian

    On behalf of Adobe:
    (1)     For both InDesign “PDF export” (including InDesign Server) and Illustrator “save as PDF” functions, most but not all of the .joboptions file font embedding options are totally and utterly ignored. The options that are ignored are the Embed all fonts, Embed OpenType fonts, Always embed, and Never embed. Those options are observed by Distiller and the PDFMaker components of Acrobat.
    (2)     These applications will attempt to embed all fonts referenced by the document, regardless of the settings of the .joboptions file. The only reason why a font would not be embedded in a PDF file would be if (a) the font was unavailable (i.e., not installed on the system) or (b) the font's embedding permissions do not permit embedding for at least preview and print privileges. Thus, if you use the so-called Standard .joboptions (strongly not recommended for any graphic arts purposes), even the base 14 fonts (four faces each of Helvetica, Times, and Courier along with Symbol and ITC Zapf Dingbats will be embedded if your document references them.
    (3)     The subset threshold value of 0 (zero) may effectively cause all the glyphs of a font to be embedded in some, but not all cases. This will work for many if not most Type 1 fonts and some smaller TrueType and OpenType CFF fonts. Note that embedding all glyphs in a font is not the same as embedding a full font. For OpenType and TrueType fonts, InDesign and Illustrator never embed all the tables of the font. Such unembedded tables include those used for pair kerning, advanced OpenType features (such as ligatures, alternate representations, contextual alternates, small caps, old style figures, etc.), and extended metrics.
    (4)     There are plenty of bubbameissas out there with regards to the benefits or liabilities of either fully embedding or subset embedding fonts. What is true is that: (a) Acrobat never uses the embedded font for text editing - you must have the font installed on the system in order to do such edits. (b) Subset embedding or not is totally irrelevant to what a RIP does when rendering text, either for PostScript or direct PDF RIPs. Neither subset or full embedding is any more reliable than the other and the specifications of PostScript and PDF do not permit the RIP to replace the embedded font with a font with a similar name - urban legend notwithstanding!!!! (c) Third party plug-ins to Acrobat or applications that claim to allow you to edit PDF files with embedded fonts may be illegally letting you do so if the embedding permissions do not permit embedding for editable embedding or installable embedding - most fonts do not provide such embedding permissions and since the fonts are missing metric information, such editing may be somewhat lacking in quality or features.
    (5)     In fact some very non-tech-savvy organizations have posted requirements for full embedding of fonts in submitted PDF files (I have personally seen one such requirement by some international bureaucracy). They can post such bone-headed requirements based on limited understanding of PDF and PDF workflows, but that doesn't mean that anybody actually provides such PDF files. If in fact you run into such requirements, I would appreciate it if references to same can be forwarded to my attention by private message on these forums.

  • FM 8.0.2 WinXP: Weird On-Screen Font Kerning

Help! I'm experiencing a very irritating bug that didn't seem to
appear until I applied one of the FM 8 patches. I'm running FM 8.0.2
on Windows XP. I don't remember if this bug started in 8.0.1 or
8.0.2, but it didn't exist in FM 8.0.0, and it doesn't exist in FM
    7.
Simply put, the spacing of the on-screen characters is wrong. Some
characters are smashed together and others have large gaps after
them. In Times New Roman 10, for example, every lowercase "m" has a
large space after it. Other font sizes, and other fonts, are also
affected. The problem doesn't seem to go away unless I use a very
large zoom-in factor (or zoom out, but then the text is illegible
    anyway).
This makes it difficult for me to read and edit my own text, and it
makes it difficult to (e.g.) remove unwanted spaces.
This problem doesn't appear in printouts or PDFs, which leads me to
suspect that it was done on purpose, in order to make the on-screen
position of each character more closely follow its position on paper
when printed. If so, it seems like a misguided idea, and I would
prefer at least the option to have things back the way they were. I
am used to the idea that lines may not come as far over on the
screen as they do on the printed page.
    I prefer legibility.
Can anything be done about this?
    Thanks!

    Ed and Chris,
I see what you observe as well and the effect is apparently most visible with low zoom levels and low font sizes. There is a trade-off between letter placement precision and low-resolution hinting rules built into fonts.
The line composer always uses the font's characters precise width data (fractional widths) to decide how many characters fit on a single line. When it comes to displaying that line on-screen there are two options:
If you have DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On the same precise data is used to calculate the starting point of each single character. This is very useful if you want to align certain characters to other elements on a page. Especially with mono-spaced fonts this guarantees that lines with the same amount of characters end at the same point, not only in print but also on screen.
If you have DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=Off the display engine only uses the rounded width values returned from the hinting engine to place the characters, just ensuring they fit the line by modifying the spaces between words.
The difference between fractional widths and rounded widths gets lower if you increase font-size or zoom factor. Some character pairs are more affected in certain sizes/zooms. Also some fonts are more affected than others. The problem with monospaced fonts is that any rounding difference accumulates across the line.
From an authoring point of view fractional widths may not be the best choice, from a layout point of view they definitely are. I have to repeat that I never before heard any complaint from users where I recommended using DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics=On, maybe because most users work with higher zoom levels or rarely use a font like Times New Roman (as I guess that serif fonts might be more affected).
You have the option, and I just wanted to explain the background a little bit.
