Pairing remote to apple tv

I had to purchase a new apple remote because old one got damaged. I tried to pair the new remote with the apple tv as per apples guidance using the remote. (I am unable to use the apple tv settings as I do not have remote interface from old remote).
I have been unsuccessful at pairing the remote. the only button that works is the play/pause. I cannot get back to the menu or navigate the menus etc.
Any ideas how to resolve this issue?

This is the specific sequence that could cause an issue:
(middle column is old white Apple remote (ATV1 and many older Macs), last column for current silver remote.

Set up Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation)

The Mac Pro does not have a built-in IR receiver. You can however buy a USB IR receiver and use that in conjunction with your Apple Remote.

A classic chicken/egg problem. I see this in the Apple TV manual:
You can also hold down Menu and Right for 6 seconds to pair Apple TV and the Apple Remote.
When you successfully pair your Apple Remote, Apple TV displays a chainlink symbol ( ) above a picture of a remote. Apple TV now works only with the paired remote.
You might have to change your screen name (kidding).

My Apple TV remote will not control or pair with my Apple TV

Remote stopped working with Apple TV this morning. I have replaced the battery and have attempted all the suggested steps by Apple support to pair my remote with Apple TV. Everything fails. When I hold the proper buttons to restore, the activity light starts blinking after about 5 secs and nothing happens. I can't restart Apple TV like I have always been able to with the remote. Apple suggest disconnecting Apple TV from power and HDMI and connect to computer with microUSB cable, go to iTunes and do a restore. This does not work either. Is it time to trade it in for a newer model? Any and all help/suggestions is appreciated.

As Murphy always does, I went back and followed, VERY CLOSELY, the instructions for re-pairing the remote. And guess what, it works now! A Christmas miracle? I doubt... just good 'ole Apple technology. Anyway, the remote works!

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

Unable to pair Remote with iTunes

Hi, I am unable to pair Remote app to iTunes via both Home Sharing and Add an iTunes Library (via passcode).
I am using Remote version 4.0 (748) on iOS 7.0.4 on iPhone 5s and iTunes version 11.1.3.8 on Windows 8.
Both my iPhone and my Windows computer are connected to the same home network via wifi. I have signed in to the same account (the one used to access iCloud and App Store downloads) on my iPhone's Remote app as the one I used to sign in to iTunes' Home Sharing on Windows.
I have read this support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12357. I can neither find the "Remote button" on iTunes on Windows that allows me to type the 4 digit passcode, nor get the link established via signing in to home sharing. I have also taken a conscious effort to allow both inbound and outbound traffic on TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353.

Do you mean you've replaced your remote and it wont work because your AppleTV is paired to your lost remote?

I'm experiencing a similar problem, does this sound familiar?
To begin with after installing a brand new Apple TV the "Menu" button on the remote was the only button that worked. I could managed a few menu button functions like pair remote (Menu & Right) and reset (Menu & Down) but that's it. I couldn't select a language, a wi-fi network or even get to the settings menu. I had picture (albeit a menu screen) and sound (albeit just beeps when I press the menu button) but NO control.
The next day I tried again only to find improved but still intermittent functionality which ceased part way through configuration. So frustrating trying to enter Apple Id, password and wi-fi network codes with the remote working only intermittently!
Can anyone help Carolin and I out???

Though all that said, i would have NO idea on how to set it up.
However, would it be also possible to link up the Bose Solo!? I know it's a long shot of asking, i just want to see if anyone here knows a thing or two about it!

I use the harmony one it control my appletv, sony tv, sony receiver, dab radio and satelite box
without any problems
one "program" it using a website in a browser or some logitech program depending on the model

I am not sure if I can program or whatever my ipad mini to use as the renote for our apple tv. We cannot find the remote and I thought I read somewhere tht one can set up their ipad device to act as a remote for apple tv. I could be wrong.
