Pairs of RAM question

I have a gorgeous white MacBook on its way to me (after a couple of years of dreaming about a black small laptop from Apple, when it finally appeared I decided I preferred the white after all!)
I want to upgrade from the stock 512MB when I get it. I know that matched pairs are better for performance reasons but I want to upgrade to 1GB initially and then a month or two down the line I want to upgrade with a second 1GB stick.
I have two questions:
1) Is it possible to run the MacBook with 1 stick of RAM?
2) Would I see any performance improvement when using 1GB+256MB over 256MB+256MB?
Thanks!
Gavin

1) Is it possible to run the MacBook with 1 stick of
RAM?
2) Would I see any performance improvement when using
1GB+256MB over 256MB+256MB?
Good question. I could not find a difinitive answer, just some indicators. Apple recommends two for best performance, to take advantage of the system ability to feed the cache.
This is a leap but if you use just one you negate that system access. The processor does not actually read the RAM. It reads the cache which is supplied by the RAM. I personally don't think it will give a performance boost with 1GB and a 256MB set. I think you will need 2 X 1GB to feed the cache correctly.
There were lots of references to people loading up on RAM. If you can at all afford it now, go for a matched set.
FWIW, the single core is a dual core which failed the test. It runs the same OS and presumably is accessed the same way as the duo.

  • VERY SPECIFIC RAM QUESTION (not answered in prior topics)

I have a very specific RAM question. I've been pouring through the discussions and I see TONS of stuff about the proper way to upgrade RAM. I've done that before without incident, but here is my dilemma:
I'm using the 3.0Ghz, 8-core, MP currently with 8GB of the 667Mhz RAM (8x1GB). The memory is all matched from OWC and I have had no problems.
I just bought 16GB of new RAM from OWC (4x4GB).
I'm going to remove all 8 of the current 1GB DIMM's, and place two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser A, and two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser B. That will give me 16GB's in matched pairs on slots 1 & 2 of both riser A and B.
My question is this: Should I install two of my old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser A, and two of the old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser B (for a total of 20GB's)?
I've read that having all 8 slots filled = better performance but I'm not sure the mix of 4GB DIMM's and 1GB DIMM's.
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks So Much,
    Tom

Optimally you want matched quads in each Riser. However, Bare Feats did some memory benchmarks that you might wish to read regarding memory performance versus different configurations. As for proper installation see the following:

  • Another RAM question / sorry haha

    Hi
I operate an early 2008 MacPro im going to upgrade.
    I currently have 4GB of RAM - 4 x 1GB sticks.
I could simply buy 4 extra sticks of 1GB which fills up the 8 slots - all being matched and evenly distributed across the risers etc.
What i was wondering, what if i was to get 2 x 2GB sticks -
would i install the 2 x 2GB on the spare 2ports on riser A, OR
    Do i install the 2x2GB on riser A and move the 4 x 1GB on B, OR
Do i leave the 4 x 1GB across the 2risers and install a 2gb stick on A and the other on B - is that a matched pair?
As you can see - even with all the memory posts in this forum im still no clearer in my own situation, if anyone could be kind enough to point me in the right direction it would be greatly appriciated.

Hiya and wlecome to Apple discussions.
I found a discussion (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=421391) that it saying in essence that a matching (suitable) pair of RAM sticks should be installed at the bottom (moving the exisiting ones up, if need be - but you should have free slots); you can find out by going to the Apple in your finder bar, clicking "About This Mac" and then "More Info"; under "memory" (in the new window) it will tell you the empty slots.
The memory wiring diagramme was here:

  • HP dv9629ca Laptop (Ram Question)

Here is a RAM question. The Laptop had 2 one Gigabyte SO-DIMMs with them both installed the PC would not boot. the lights would come on but the screen remained black. I thought it was a RAM problem since when I would only put in a single stick of RAM the computer Booted no problem. I figured the one ram was BAD. Yet when i bought a 2GB SO-DIMM and added it to the 1GB already inside the computer wouldn't boot just like before. so I removed both rams and Put the 2GB stick in where the other was working and It shows 2GB now. I Know the Laptop maxes out at 4GB of RAM with a 64bit version of Windows installed. Is it possible to find a 4GB SO-DIMM and put it into the Slot that works or will it only accept a maximum of 2GB per Slot?
    Laptop Details
AT newegg.ca they have a Single SO-DIMM that is 4GB the Laptop Max is 4GB. Not sure if it would read 4GB coming from a single SO-DIMM

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion dv9629ca Notebook Computer and here is the HP Pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 Entertainment PC - Maintenance and Service Guide for your computer. Both pieces of information indicate that 4GB (2 X 2GB) is the maximum. 2GB is the largest size supported in each slot.
You may wish to clean the slots or reseat the memory... you may also want to inspect the slots for debris or bent contacts.

  • Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz RAM question

I purchased one stick of 1Gb RAM and installed it on the motherboard, but I didnt know it had to be installed in pairs so the computer wont recognize it. I made an order for a second stick and it should arrive in a couple of days. Can I use my computer with the one stick still in there, or do I need to remove it and install both at the same time?
    Powermac G5 Dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I am confused so this is probably a dumb question, but how can using 1 stick be configured as a pair?
I would take the new stick out and use it as originally configured. When you get the second stick have at it.

  • Mixed RAM question

I have two simple questions. I just put a couple of 1G RAM cards in my '03 model Power Mac G5, and I was wondering if I could run them along with the original 256's, or do all the RAM cards have to be the same capacity?
The other obvious question is; If I can do that, would it make any difference in the time it takes to do RAM intensive tasks like encoding video for DVD format?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   single 1.8 CPU 2 Hard drives 160G ea 2G RAM

The new 2 X 1G RAM is running, and it did not require anything beyond taking out the 2 X 256's and plugging the new cards in the same slots. Since the 2 G seems all right, I am still wondering if it is ok or not ok to plug the 256's in alongside the new ones. This G5 has 8 slots, 4 pairs. Now, a new question; the memory test that you mention, how do I find that. I have looked thru everyting in Apps and Utilities and Finder search, and don't see it yet. I would like to run the mem test to check the new cards.
    Thanks for replying.

Im looking to upgrade my ram and i have a few questions.
    1) i currently have 2x512 in there, can i add 2x1GB or would i have to add 4x512 for it to work.
    2) I dont want to buy ram from apple because of the price, is this the right type of ram for the mac pro?:

Use the memory selector from any of the above for Mac Pro modules.
You can use matched pairs of any density up to 4GB per DIMM
    $100 per GB or less.
they must not only be FBDIMM ECC but have the heat sinks as well. And cooling or heat is a real problem and killer and can cause problems. even approved and supported DIMMs can run 10 degrees or more C hotter than Apple 512MB DIMMs.

  • 3rd party ram question

First of all Happy Thanksgiving to everybody reading!
I know there are many threads on 3rd party ram so please humor me for a minute. All my friends are PC guys and can’t offer me Mac advice.
I own a 2.66 Mac pro with 2x512 APPLE ram and 2x512 CRUCIAL ram
I am a design student using adobe after effects as well as all of the creative suite. I really need to get up to 3 or 4 gigs of ram on my machine. Of course I am in college and broke as a joke. I am looking at getting 3rd party ram for the next two gigs. I already have both Apple and crucial ram in my machine, here are my questions:
    1) Is it a bad idea to have a rainbow of different manufactures ram in my Mac Pro? (aka is 1 gig apple 1gig crucial and maybe 2 gig transintl ram?
    2) The two more affordable memory companies I am looking at for my Mac Pro are Transintl ($398 2x1gig) and Datamem ($378 2x1gig). I can’t really understand why these two companies can be 100 dollars cheaper then crucial and almost 300 cheaper then Apple. Are these reputable ram suppliers and equal performance or is there a compromise I would be making going with the less expensive ram?
I am so thankful that I have this forum of Mac Geniuses to help me out as this is my first Mac purchase. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving!

As long as you install RAM in pairs it doesn't make any difference whether they are from the same or different manufacturers.

I've used DataMem for over 10 years with complete satisfaction. Although they do not usually have the cheapest prices, their prices are competitive. They have a good return policy, provide a good product, and are knowledgeable of Mac RAM. I have no qualms recommending them based on my experience.

  • K7N2-L ram question

    Hi,
Had a good few problems with my ram, when I had Generic 2100 stuff, well thats all in the past now Got 2x256 HyperX 2700 , now my question is :-
Im Looking to add ram to my system
Would it be wise to add a 512 stick with the eisting 2x256 ?? or does it all have to be 256 for dual channel ??
If I can add a 512 stick would it be ok to use a nother brand , Im looking at Corsair xms2700 ?? The HyperX will work ok with it ??
Im looking @ having 1024 if I have to I might even get a matched Pair of XMS 512`s, all depends how much cash I have left after my GFX upgrade !! , id probally prefer to get the 512 Corsair , but compatability I would get the HyperX ..... Many Thanx

    Cheers guys cool,
Well Im not sure I will need 1gig , maybe 768 would be fine for future proofing , my system has maxed out the 512 in a few games, and when I previously had 768, i still found a game that nearly maxed that out ..
Im just thinking that when the next round of games like HL2 Doom3 etc and Games after these, Might be major ram hoggers...Thats was my thinking !!.
However It wouldnt be the end of the world, If I didnt have 1 Gig "lol" ...Just seems to me that so many things are eating up ram these days.. Just make me feel better to know theres plenty in reserve
    cheers agian guys

  • First Imac - RAM question

Hi Ive just bought my first ever Imac, its on its way at the mo, and meanwhile Ive bought 2Gb of RAM to install myself - am I safe to install the RAM as soon as I get the Imac - before having switched it on and set it up?
Also I opted for the wireless keyboard and mouse but Im sure somewhere on the website I read that you need a normal USB keyboard and mouse to set up your Mac before you can switch to the wireless, is that right?
    Cheers

As for the keyboard, as far as I know, yes, you do need a normal keyboard and mouse to setup your Mac the first time as the Bluetooth Pairing doesn't take place until after the machine is booted into Finder.
Nope - you can use the wireless mouse/keyboard to setup your Mac for the very first time. How do I know? Because I did just that. With both a 20" AluMac and later, when I traded that in, with a 24" AluMac. I've only used the wireless keyboard/mouse on my Macs and had no problem pairing up then setting up. The iMac will detect there isn't a USB keyboard/mouse and put a little graphic on screen instructing you to turn on the wireless mouse then the wireless keyboard.

  • MSI 915p Thoughts & ram questions

    Hi All,
I'm thinking of buying one of  MSI 915P neo2 Platinum motherboards, but i have a couple of questions. Firstly i'm having dificulty finding reviews for this mobo, so i've come here to see what you think of it (unbiased of course). Secondly i'm confused over what type of RAM it supports, some parts sellers list PC4200 others PC4300, i'm even seeing the newer PC5300 being mentioned. And finally what the difference between PC4200 & PC4300.
    Thanks inadvance

  • Lync Standard Edition Servers - paired across datacenters question

    Hi all
I am designing a Lync deployment for a small org (circa 800 users) obviously they keep banging on about HA/resiliency etc
my initial design was a pair of standard edition servers in a single (tier 3) datacentre (with dual edge servers), they keep insisting they require a 50/50 split across a second datacenter
so obviously with Enterprise Edition it is possible to have a high degree of resiliency both in and between datacenters - but at some cost and with massive server bloat - seems over engineered
and if you do it with SE server - I,e split the SE server between datacenters you loose any resiliency in each datacentre - and presumably if a server needs maintenance etc then you need to fail over the entire userbase from one datacentre to the other
what are people views on this - I still think the paired SE topology in a single datacentre is the best compromise (the WAN with be fully resilient too)
do I have any other options

Keep in mind, pool pairing isn't HA and it's not automatic, it's just a level of resiliency.  If one server needed maintenance, you'd still want to plan downtime to manually fail the users over so they didn't see the blip.
The large benefit to running the pair in the same site where all the users live in that site would mostly just be the WAN access.  Two party audio/video chats will generally send the media directly between the endpoints, so that wouldn't necessarily
cross the WAN anyway. IM traffic is pretty negligible, but would hit the front ends and if you're strapped for WAN bandwidth you may want to watch it. More so, if someone on the far end datacenter scheduled a conference for users in the main datacenter with
video, then you could have heavy traffic hitting the WAN to get to the other site and back.
The big benefit to putting it in a different datacenter is of course simply site resiliency.
The difference between a full datacenter failover and a failover in the same site isn't that different with pool pairing however, in both cases it's a handful of PowerShell commands and in a pinch some quick DNS and topology changes.

  • Mac Pro 8 Core (2008) Hard Drive & Ram questions

    Hi there,
I recently purchased a Mac Pro 8 Core 2008 Model with 2Gb ram and 320Gb Hard Drive (Got a great deal on it... paid $1,500.00 for it!!). I bought this computer exclusively for audio production work. I know I can upgrade up to 32GB of ram if I wanted to however, I have heard that the system won't recognize 32GB ram when running 32bit OS & Applications. I use Ableton Live 8.2 (32bit capable) and Logic Studio 9 (32bit & 64bit capable).. what is the highest amount of ram I should upgrade to without overkilling it? In other words... what is the highest amount of ram I can upgrade to that I will actually notice the difference and that the system will actually use @ 32bit?
Second question is regarding hard drives... I need at least 320GB for OS and core applications and at least 1 TB for storage... what is the most efficient, fastest and least expensive to upgrade the storage on this machine?
I really appreciate your comments on this one.

Someone with Mac Pro, but on OS X 10.6 Install forum, like some, has full suites of CS5, FCP and others, and had run out of space literally on 150GB boot drive.
Apps like iDVD tech note recommended the boot drive have 24GB of free space (unfragmented for best burn performance) to burn dual layer.
X-Plane can go anywhere but uses almost 60GB for full world support.
My rule of thumb is 50% free on boot drive to avoid fragmenting free space such that it causes problems and there is always good performance overall as well as for read/writes.
To say someone doesn't need xyz when maybe they rre right, and to argue with their own math?
OS X does not support TRIM or I'd see if you can go with 120GB SSD. One way to slim down boot drive of course, maybe you have, maybe not,
Move all the data and media files possible off the boot drive can save 100GB and improve I/O at the same time.
Move the entire home account folder (the above leaves a smaller 1GB home library only on boot drive) which really isn't totally necessary but nice for some.
WD Black Caviar 2TB $170 is fast and nice or $89 for 1TB (if you think you need A, then get 2 x as much storage).
2008s don't use 8GB DIMMs and 32GB is as far as they go.
ATI 5770/5870 or even Quadro 4000 graphics
did it come with a 4870? or 8800GT?
