PAL DVD from NTSC video

I am doing a project pro bono for a friend of video I shot for him at his daughter's 4th birthday.  They want to send the DVD to Russia for the grandparents to see.
This is the first PAL DVD I have attempted with Encore CS4 using NTSC footage.  Here is the workflow proposed in hopes to get a properly formatted and viewable DVD.
Open a new PAL Encore project, then using the dynamic link, bring in the NTSC edited video.
The menu I used in the NTSC version of the DVD for the parents used a 4:3 NTSC frame which I saved as a menu and will import to the PAL project to avoid having to create it again (which contatined about 12 buttons for selecting various shots).
There is no PAL menu in Encore so I am wondering if the NTSC menu will be stretched when viewed in PAL.
More imporntantly, I am wondering if the video will be re-sized correctly in the PAL Encore project, since I have no way to test it.
Would very much appreciate input on this effort.
Thanks!!

You could just send them an NTSC DVD - nearly all PAL DVD players can play NTSC discs.

Can the latest version of iMovie create a PAL DVD from NTSC Video camcorder? What are best practices and workflow to create a PAL DVD from NTSC sources.

iMovie doesn't create DVDs, iDVD does..
in iM's prefs, set Video to 30fps = NTSC
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
in iDVD's prefs, set Video to 25fps = PAL
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
when finished with editing in iM, Share to Mediabrowser
in iDVD, select a theme, grab movies from Mediabrowser

  • PAL DVD from NTSC original

    Hi,
Just got DVD SP 4 and had a question. I heard from someone that you could make a PAL DVD from NTSC source footage in DVD SP 4 in one easy step...is this true?
I kinda poked around but didn't see a magic button that seemed to do this...
I have a DVD with NTSC footage...it's an auto-play with no menus, just an 8 minute video. Do I need to make a PAL version of the footage outside of DVD SP 4 or is there something in the program that does this for me?
    Thank in advance...
    Christian Remde

Is this something only available in Compressor? When I export via Quicktime Pro from within FCP4, I can choose to convert to PAL from NTSC or vice-versa and it looks okay to me. Does Compressor do anything special when it comes to format conversion that QTPro doesn't do? The frame-blending (if necessary) and scaling seems to be done in QTPro, so I can't think of anything else Compressor could do to come up with a better result. Of course I'm also one of the many who keep getting the "Unable to connect to background process" error, so I don't think Compressor is an option for me.

  • Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

  • Pal dVD from NTSC Footage

When you author a Pal DVD using NTSC as your original footage do you need to convert using compressor first or can you just set up for a Pal DVD in DVDSP using your original NTSC footage?
    Thanks
    Jeff

when you open a project file and change the preferences I believe you will get a warning.
DVDSP is an authoring environment. It would be better to managing the NTSC-PAL conversion in Compressor. That tool is designed for this type of work.

  • Burn a PAL dvd from ntsc project

I have an NTSC project with all ntsc media and would like to burn a PAL dvd. what is the easiest way to do so. I converted the media to pal and was hoping to do a 'save as' on the dvdsp project and just change it to PAL but it won't except the media.
    thanks

    dvdsp 4, 2.7 dual g5.

It makes sense that a PAL DVD project wouldn't accept media that's already compressed to MPEG2 in NTSC format. When the DVD is built, all it does is multiplex the audio/video. It doesn't change the compression or frame rate or size.
You'd probably need to recompress the original edited source video in Compressor to PAL format. Once you select a preset in Compressor, you need to change the Video Format from Automatic to PAL. Select the preset and in the Inspector, click the Encoder section, then the Video Format tab. Then you'll see the Video Format popup menu where you can change it to PAL.
One other thing to keep in mind: It might be a waste of time to convert it to PAL since most PAL DVD players can convert NTSC format DVDs on the fly during playback. I send NTSC DVDs to Hungary all the time and they have no trouble playing them with typical consumer PAL DVD players.

  • Making PAL dvd from NTSC movie

I have all my DVD assets in NTSC, and I produced a good quality NTSC DVD. I have been asked from relative to make PAL DVD. I have converted the sequences to PAL.
My question is . Do I have to convert also to PAL the IDV menu, the shot picture in the menu, and the Itunes in the menu.
If your aswer is yes! - How can I do that? I am using Mac G5 final cut pro 4. Your help is appreciated
    Thanks
    Moussa

My sequence is already converted to PAL.
    1. When I recreate the menu. Do I have to convert the menu to PAL?
    2. When I recreate the picture shot background to the menu. Do I have to convert the still picture also to PAL, before importing?
    3. When I imported the music to background/Menu. The music is too loud. Can I lower the volume from the menu?
    4. When I convert my sequence from NTSC to PAL. How can I know that my new sequence turned to be PAL? (I am using MPEG Streamclip) When I went to get info on the new sequence, there is no sign if the sequence is PAL or NTSC.

  • How to create a PAL DVD from a NTSC camera

    Hi,
I have a Canon HF10 which I have bought in the US, so it is a NTSC camera. I am living in Europe, so I would like to create a PAL dvd from the footage which I have recorded.
The footage have been shot using 1080/24p and I have imported it into iMovie. Do I need to do something extra or can I just export it and burn an dvd from iDVD?
    Best regards
    Henrik.

no surprise.. the ccd of you device is read-out 24p, but the camera records upsampled in 30i ..
24p on consumer devices is mostly marketing blabla..
in Europe, a 25p more is more interesting..
you have a NTSC device. full stop.
in iDVD, set prefs to 25fps (=PAL), relaunch iDVD, import iM project..
so, you record in 24p, got 30i on tape, anc convert again in 25i (=PAL) ... happy landing..
aside: better results in standards-conversion with free app JES Deinterlacer ...

  • How do I convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, menus and all?

    Hello everyone,
I've been given a set of PAL DVD's which need to be converted into NTSC. Now, from my understanding, there is no one program available that can do this, so I've had to rip all the video tracks off, convert them to NTSC mp2's and author the DVD from the ground up in DVDSP, build a VIDEO_TS file, then use Toast to compress to a single layer DVD and burn. If anyone knows a program that can convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, that would be greatly appreciated.
The next problem is that when I burn any of the DVD's and put them in a duplication tower (I'm not sure if that's the actual name, but it's one of those machines where you just put the original disc in the top drive and fill the other 8 or so drives under it with blanks), it says that the burn has failed. I have tried another duplication tower and end with the same result. One option I have not tried just yet is to change the brand of media I'm using to burn, but will do so next chance I get.
I'm not sure if the two problems are related or not, but I just thought it would help.
    Thanks in advance.

    2 options.
    1) Best option - only available if you have the source material - Convert source material from PAL to NTSC using the Nattress standards converter.
    http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconversion.htm
    or the JES deinterlacer:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
It's also possible to do this in Compressor but not as good quality and longer render times.
    2) If you don't have the source footage, you'll need to demux the file in MPeg Streamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/
then transcode the file as described here:

  • Convert PAL DVD to NTSC?

Hi. I recently got an imac G5 and tried playing my 1st DVD. The message came up saying that I have to choose a region code and will only be able to set the region code 5 times before its permanently set. I find this very inconvienent as I have some of both NTSC (region 1) and PAL (region 2) DVDs that I would like to be able to play on my Mac. As a worksround....I'm wondering if its possible for me to convert my PAL DVDs to NTSC using imovie and perhaps some other software.......perhaps importing the info on the PAL DVD into imovie ......and burning a NTSC (region 1) copy? If possible .....how would I go about doing this? Thanks.

I have my computer set to read region 2 DVD . Is this a problem when trying to convert a DVD to region free or 1?
When I run MTR, I get 2 folders, Audio_TS (which is empty) and VIDEO_TS.
    VIDEO_TS has many files, example; VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TSIFO, VIDEO_VOB, VTS010.BUP, VTS010.IFO, VTS010.VOB....... etc.
When I open JES 2.7.6 to convert from PAL > NTSC... the JES input pane doesn't see the files (they won't hi-lite, double click or anything) (could it be because I have my computer set to read region 2?)
Toast see the MTR files. If I try importing those same MTR files or the DVD files to Toast 6>video tab, I get "files are in a unsupported format and cannot be imported"
If I try and simply take the Pal DVD and "Toast it" from the desktop, I get "Disk could not be mounted. All open files and programs on this volume must be closed first"
When I tried DVDxDV>OTMovie, the playback was jittery on any thing that was moving with-in the picture frame. completely un-watchable. (well maybe with the right drugs....)
I looked at both links send by Matti (btw thank you very much) but I am a novice and don't understand all of the technical jargon....
All I'm trying to do is get a DVD that will play on my stand alone DVD/TV....

I'm looking for a free program that would allow me to do this.

I do not have final cut pro. Is there another option I can use?
No I'm not trying to rip dvd's. I bought this dvd in europe but unfortunately cannot play in on my dvd player (although I have an all format playing dvd player).
Also, do you get an error when logging into the apple forums.
This is the message I get every time:

  • Same project in CS5 to PAL DVD and NTSC DVD.

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to find best solution how to do it. My project is slideshow with scaled JPEG images and some video clips from DSLR camera Canon T3i.
I know that video is 16:9 (1920x1080, 29.97fr) ratio and my output should be 4:3 ratio. With this I can deal with no problems, because is just few clips. My conclusion is: How to deal with PAL SD 4:3 ( 720x576, 25fr) ratio and NTSC SD 4:3 (720x480, 29.97fr) and a lot of images. What sequence settings I should use for the project? What I can think: start with DV PAL after everything is done put in DV NTSC sequence and scale it? Any other thoughts, please?
    Thank you, Art

I was recently faced with a problem on an HD NTSC video that I videoed and produced.  The customer wanted a DVD that relatives over in Germany could view.  My concern was how to produce and test a PAL version.  My good friend Harm advised me that any DVD player in Pal-land has the capability of playing NTSC DVD video disks!   It worked fine.

  • Transferring a PAL DVD to NTSC

Hi there. I've got a PAL DVD that I need to convert to NTSC to edit with. I've ripped the DVD, but can't seem to figure out what to do from there with the Video TS folder files. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Hi Danielle,
There are a couple of approaches to this problem, whether it's NTSC or PAL. First of all, Streamclip should work with all non-copy-protected DVDs. Be sure you're dragging the correct VOB file... look at the filesizes and it will become obvious which one is a video and which is a menu file... usually it's VTS011.VOB
If it doesn't work (there are legitimate reasons why it may not work), your next bet would be Handbrake.
    http://handbrake.m0k.org/
This marvelous free software will rip your DVD to an MP4 or other format, at which point you can use Quicktime Pro to transcode to NTSC interlaced, or whatever other format you choose.
I agree, there is some quality loss with this extra step, but it beats not being able to use your video at all.
    Good luck!

  • Rec's to convert PAL DVDs to NTSC?

Hello, I've run into a video conversion issue and was hoping to get some guidance. So a friend mistakenly gifted me a DVD that was not NTSC/Region 1; I didn't realize this at first when I inserted and tried playing it in my Macbook, but unfortunately did after I'd put it into my home DVD player (the DVD logos loaded just fine, but when it came to the spot where the DVD menu was supposed to load, my screen started flickering and I thought both my TV and DVD player were broken).
So I have 2 crucial questions:
    1) Is it possible to look at a DVD on my desktop/in the Finder (or using the DVD Player feature), and tell the difference between a PAL and NTSC one?
    2) Have you ever converted a PAL DVD to a NTSC one, how difficult is it, and what's your recommended/preferred method/program?
I tried Googling the subject, but many of the discussions/methods that came up were out of dated (some by as many as 6 years...)
    Thanks!!

...Uh yeah, that's the program I initially used, to try to burn the Video_TS to another disc, still came up as PAL. And I don't want to re-burn another coaster, I want to convert it.
    Anyone else know?
