PAL DVD playback issues

Hi all,
I have made a 16x9 PAL DVD. Pretty simple disc - two menus, and a 24 minute video clip with chapters referenced in stories.
The menus are pict files setup with overlays for the button highlights. They are set to 16x9:pan/scan.
The client reported that the DVD did not play in a PAL player and TV. Played OK in a computer. He described the problem that the menu would not let them select any buttons, and that the menu was cut off top and bottom.
Before I sent the DVD, it played fine in my macbook pro, and on a windows laptop. But I don't have a PAL DVD player and PAL TV to test that config.
I burned another DVD today and tried it in a different mac. I saw the menu cutoff issue, and it also appeared that the overlay did not line up correctly so the menu did not work. This was the first time I played the DVD in this mac. Once I reset the view to normal size, it displayed and played fine. I also tried it again at full screen, and that worked as well.
So it appears that it does work, but there is an issue on first play where the menu is not displayed correctly on initial load.
Anyone have any suggests on how to get the first play to work? I'm assuming this is also what's affecting the DVD player / TV combination.
Also - any suggestions on setting up an affordable way to test the PAL DVDs here in the states other than a computer playback?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi
He described the problem that the menu would not let them select any buttons, and that the menu was cut off top and bottom.
What size did you use to build your menu backgrounds and overlays?
Anyone have any suggests on how to get the first play to work?
It uses to be so simple as selecting what item do you want to run first in DVD Inspector in DVDSP. What element is your first play? The Menu? You cuold try building a very short track (3/5 secs), with just black image and use that as first play (or a simple slideshow with a single black image). I have heard around the forums about some issues with some specific players with a menu as first play.
Hope that helps !

  • DVD playback issue with Windows Media Player

    Hi,
This isn't an Encore specific question, rather, a DVD playback one. Has anyone had issue playing their replicated DVDs in Windows Media Player? I truly believe it's the media player, not the DVD.  When we put a DVD in the drive and try to open it in WMP, it jumps right to a video, or jumps directly to the last place we were in a video.... it's not defaulting to the main menu.
Has anyone experienced this? Is it a programming glitch on my DVD? I feel like it's a WMP issue, as it's only happening on certain computers.
    thanks.

WMP has never been a good player for DVD's. At some point in the past, much of that functionality was disabled my MS, in hopes to reduce piracy. For some versions, no burned DVD would even play, though replicated/pressed DVD's were supposed to play fine.
I use CyberLink's PowerDVD and it is fine, even with my burned DVD's. The free MediaPlayer Classic HC plays my discs well too, with full menuing.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Macbook 2008 - DVD Playback issue

    Hello.
I have acquired this macbook about 6 months ago (I think it's early 2008, you twist the button with a coin to remove the battery).  I mainly use Windows on it, but it does exhibit the same issue on Mac OS X Lion and Windows 7 64-bit.
DVD Playback stutters a LOT.  It's like watching cbs.com on Low Power AMD CPU's (C-50 for example).
Workaround is to turn off hardware acceleration in Power DVD that I am using, then playback is smooth, just fine.  I haven't worked with MAC DVD Player settings, but so far that is what I have to do in Power DVD.
I am guessing its some sort of a hardware failure unless someone may have a suggestion.  Graphics card is Intel 965, I am typically running at about 30% ram free, cpu is 95% available, hard disk is in good condition.
    Thanks.

  • DVD playback issues

Hello all, have some questions I hope I can get answered.
I have been burning a number of bad discs lately, both out of DVDSP and out of Toast. I am running DVDSP 4.0.3 and Toast 6.1.1 on my G5 Dual 2 Ghz running 10.4.4.
What is happening is that quite often, the last chapter of the DVD will have playback issues in my set top DVD player where the picture freezes or it looks ike the color is breaking apart (I don't know the technical term for this).
It doesn't do it on every disc though.
I am using TDK DVD-R 8x and Memorex DVD-R 8x media and previously have never had a problem with either.
At first I thought I was starting to have a Memorex issue as it seemed to happen only on Memorex discs, but then it started on the TDK as well.
I have emptied the cache, run disk utility and disk warrior.
I burned one disc on memorex media that played fine in my computer, but not in my DVD player (a Sony), but DID play fine in another Sony DVD player.
I then burned the same disc on TDK media though, and it not only didn't play on my DVD player, it didn't play on my computer either, freezing up in the last chapter as always.
My drive is the SONY DVD RW DW-U21A, which I have considered replacing as 8x media is next to impossible to find and I'd like dual layer support.
my old burned discs play fine in my DVD player and SOME of the new ones I burn do too, but a lot of them do not. I don't think I have that many bad discs in the spindle.
Could BOTH my burner and DVD player be shot?
Anyone have any problems like this?
In a separate question, what is the Pioneer drive of choice to do 16x DVDs and also have the dual layer support and is it currently supported under Tiger or do I have to flash it on a PC? (I don't have a PC to do this on). I have heard the Pioneer ismuch better than the Sony.
    Any help would be appreciated

For the stuff in DVDSP, it's happend on a number of projects, none of them longer than 90 minutes. Generally the target bit rate has been anywhere from 6.5-7.5 and the max is 8. I use ac3 audio at 192.
I've had issues burning disk images in toast though too with the same problem. They will sometimes play and sometimes not play. Once in a while I understand as you get bad discs, but this is like 40% of the time now.

  • DVD Playback Issues with Dual Layer media

I have been using DVDSP for years now, and have rarely had any issues with burning my final projects to DVD. Any playback issues have usually been issues with players and +or-R media.
I have recently upgraded to a MacPro, and have been really stoked about being able to burn to Dual Layer media. My previous G5 didn't have a DL burner.
I have a large project that fills most the disk, and everything seems great in the software, and when playing the media files on the computer. But when I burn to disk, I have huge issues with playback on different DVD players, computers, etc. I have stuttering with menu's, freezing, and stuttering with playback of video.
I read that the issue could be because of the speed I'm burning at in DVDSP, so I saved as a disk image, and used disk utility to burn at a 4x speed. This seemed to help, but when I got to the end of the movie I had huge issues with stuttering/playback quality. So I burned another copy from the same disk image, and it wouldn't even play in my DVD player.
When I open the Video_TS folder from the DVDSP Build, and play right off my hard drive in the DVD software player, I don't have any of these issues.
So I'm guessing my problem is either my DVD media I'm using, or the burners on this new computer. I've burned DVD's on both burners (yes I have 2) and I still have the same problems.
I am using Memorex DVD+R DL and they are 8x.
Can anyone offer me some advice here. I really wish I could just hit burn and have a disk work. DL media isn't all that cheap and I don't know how many coasters I can make and keep my sanity.

I used compressor and I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes setting. The bit rate is avg 6.2 and maximum 7.7. And yes I used ac3 audio.
When you say lowest speeds possible... shouldn't a burner that says it burns at a speed work at that speed? I'm cool with burning at a lower speed to get this thing to work, but why have a burner that burns DVD DL at 8x speed, when it doesn't work? Shouldn't it work? Why is it that it won't work?
If I get Verbatim DVD+R DL, can I burn at 8x speed with those?
When I burn in disk utility I used the "varify burned data" and everything checks out ok. So why do I have this issue. Just curious.

  • 975x Platinum POE DVD Playback issue

My system components are as follows:
975x POE Motherboard with offical bios version 7.2
    Intel Core 2 6300 1.87GHz CPU
    Ultra Xfinity 600W PSU
    Samsung Writemaster DVDRW
    Liteon DVDRW
Maxtor 6L300R0 300GB PATA Hard Drive
Asus Radeon x1600 with latest drivers
Now, on to the issue. DVD play back, with use of various codecs and programs (i.e. Power DVD 6, Media Player Classic), is jerky with crackling audio. This happens with both of the DVDRW drives and with each hooked up as a single drive on the IDE channel. I've also tried a new IDE cable. I've enabled hardware acceleration in the options of every program I've tried to play DVDs with. I've installed the latest chipset, video, audio drivers. I've disabled the onboard sound and installed a sound card to rule out the onboard sound as the cause. I've reinstalled windows twice, and for a short time after reinstalling windows, everything works fine. Eventually, though, the system will hang or even restart during a DVD and after that, the playback is choppy with crackling audio all the time.
Any help will be greatly appriceated.

OK,the easiest option for you is to connect the optical drives on the blue IDE controller(set the drives as master and slave), and the IDE HDD on the yellow one, witch will be controlled by Jmicron. Before doing that, uninstall jmcron in Device Manager-SCSI and RAID Controllers, and uninstall JRAID in Add/Remove programs. Then turn off your PC,switch the devices and then start your PC.When Windows starts,Found new hardware will appear, and that's the point when you'll install the drivers that were supplied with the MB.

  • DVD Playback Issues-Please Help!!

    Hello,
I have been reading this forum and I am trying to figure out if this info may help me but I want to give my specific details if that is ok and hopefully someone can help me here.
I am sorry if I am repeating the same questions as others here, but I am so at a loss right now that I need to be specific to even understand myself!
Ok here is my current process. I edit my projects (3 montages, 2 are 4 minutes, 1 is about 30 minutes) in imovie09. I then go to share, media browser, large. It does its thing. I go to I DVD place the videos in the menu and burn to verbatim dvd-r using 8X speed and leaving the rest of the settings default to IDVD 09 default settings. I burnt Two copies of the exact same project, one right after the other. Both DVD’s play fine on various DVD players in my home, including a DVD capable blu-ray player. I delivered to my client, who can play one montage half way and then it freezes up. The other dvd plays all projects except freezes up in the middle of the 30 min montage.
Is there any settings I can change, or any part of the above process I can change working with the programs I have to ensure that these DVD’s playback properly on all DVD players they are put into? The DVD also does not play at all or start up at all on her PC.
If I export the movies to quick time instead of to the “media browser, what is the best possible settings for doing this and is it a better option then the media browser sharing process?
I am not opposed to purchasing Roxio if it will ensure a better outcome, but in this case I am assuming I need to export the project to quicktime, which again poses my same above question.
I know these are very rookie questions…which is sad because I am fully educated on FCP and broadcasting standard formats, but I cant remember anything from that anymore apparently.
Can someone also explain to me the details of encoding or codecs…in English terms..haha and if I may be able to do change any of anything that has to do with this to make the videos better?
Again I apologize for repeating, but I am pretty desperate for help, and if anyone out there can help me or reach out and be my mentour here I would really appreciate it. If you would prefer I take this off the forum discussions I can be emailed at [email protected].
Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate these forums and everyone that contributes

    Please pardon the intrusion…

  • DVD Playback Issue

When I'm watching a dvd with my PB 15" it plays really weird... sometimes it plays smoothly for a few seconds, but then after that it looks like its droping some frames or getting hung up on certain spots quickly. I've tryed multiple dvds and they all are the same. It has been getting quite annoying lately. Anyone know if there is a fix for that?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Of course this shouldn't be happening.
If by chance you are trying to view a DVD that was burned on a PC and the software that was used didn't have the correct settings selected this can cause the problem.
If this is a Commercial DVD and it is doing that you may have to try a Lens cleaner to fix the problem.
You may also want to try to Repair Permissions.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640&#607640
Another side note. If you have done a lot of burning and you are expiriancing this issue, sometimes running the freeware shareware that is mentioned in Gullivers post will also do the trick,
Macjanitor, Cache Cleaner, Onyx, are all good.
If you have a smaller amount of ram, the storage of these video files needs to be cleaned to eliminate these problems sometime.
    Cheers Don

  • Yet another DVD Playback thread...

Gone through every other thread related to DVD playback issues when you do a forum search for "dvd playback". If I try to play a DVD, the disc spins for quite a while while (S)MPlayer just sits there and eventually crashes. Tried this with multiple DVDs, updated all my software...here's the log. It doesn't play in xine or VLC either.

Sort of looks like hardware issues to me.  Do you know that the drive works (i.e. tested in another OS, or it used to work and just stopped?)
Did you try just mplayer dvd://  ?  That's quite a long options list you've got there.
What kind of drive is it?

  • Replicated DVD Title Playback Issues (~ 1 out of 20 disks)

    Replicated Disc Playback Issues
I recently authored 4x DVD titles using DVD SP 4 in conjunction w/ Compressor 3.0.5. Media was compressed using Compressor “DVD: Best Quality 120 minutes” setting, imported and then built/formatted in DVD SP. The project masters were formatted to Verbatim 4.7 GB DVD-R out of DVD SP without any issue in the log window. I then watched all titles from start to finish on a home set-top player without any playback issues.
The DVD-R disk masters were then shipped to a glass master company, w/o error and verified with an Eclipse system…then back to the Replication house where 1000 copies for each title where made. I watched all Replicated titles upon return, on the 2 different set top DVD players and w/o error.
We have however, been receiving error call-backs on ~ 1 out of 20 DVDs, where people have been reporting video freezes, jittery video in places, etc. I’m new to the authoring world, but believe I was in full technical compliance within DVD SP when building the projects (used APTS tutorial as guide).
Again, the glass mastering company said there were no Eclipse report errors, and the Replication house said the DVDs passed their QT tests as well (Detarius Machine?).
I really need to pinpoint what is causing such a high failure rate in the replicated disks. Is this on my end or the replication process? Did I miss some tech specs in SP that may not pose an issue on some players, but do on others? Shouldn't the QC systems used in the mastering / replication process detect issues with the disks? Any suggestions / guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Just a 'Toast-it note' guys,
Toast cannot choose your break point except by slim chance, nor properly flag the cell it chooses as the layer break.
A Disc Image does not contain layer break information. There's just information in the Image's UDF/ISO data declaring the full 'extent' of the sectors of data in the Image. Even If you set the layer break point in DVD SP's Format Window when you formatted the Disc Image to hard drive, it will have no effect - Toast, nor any other third party formatting software will have a clue as to your intentions on which cell you'd like designated as the layer break (only the control data in a DDP file set and the control data on a replicated DVD contains layer break info from the DVD project - Control data is not allowed to be written to a DVD Recordable, that area is glossed-over during manufacturing).
Toast only scans the cell address table for the appropriate VOB and chooses a cell closest to the middle of the valid layer break range to split the data stream in two (and uses other algorithms under certain circumstances). But it doesn't flag the cell it chooses as non seamless, or set other layer break cell parameters properly.
Submitting DL Images written by Toast, you will get nailed most of the time by the replicator's Eclipse software for a seamless cell at the layer break - if you're lucky; as more than a few replicators will let that 'warning' message sail right by, and they'll replicate anyway; or they're running a version of Eclipse prior to 4.0, which many are, that doesn't even check for the layer break cell's existence. You could be even luckier, and have a cell command (Marker end jump setting) for the cell prior to the layer break cell Toast chose for the Layer break - that will cause DVD SP to set the following cell as non-seamless. Skinny chance.
If you're unlucky, Toast will choose a proper non seamless LB location in the DVD SP generated files that should never be the layer break location for an abstraction-layer based authoring system generated Image.
Hint: if third party disc formatting software doesn't present you a somewhat cool screen at double-layer writing time, showing you all the available LB cells to choose choose from, complete with the ability to click and preview all of the possible layer break cell canditate's start video, so you can be sure - and properly flag your chosen layer break cell; then it shouldn't be used to write playable DVD+R DL discs. Now, Toast is great for writing DVD+R DL pure data discs, as the requirements for switching layers during the read of ROM data is much less stringent (best to break between files, though).
While there might not seem to be a clear-cut right way to pre-mastering for DVD-Video, for sure, none of the few best/professional workflows allow Toast in the process.
    Take care,

  • PAL DVD Issues

I'm not sure if this question is for this forum but I'll give it a shot.
My original FCP Project was an PAL HDV Project. Once I finished editing, I put the sequence in a DV PAL sequence, rendered it and outputted as a FCP file. I put that file in compressor to make a m2v PAL file. I took the file into DVD SP as a PAL project and burned it as a SD DVD on the G5.
The DVD tested fine on a several DVD players.
My problem is that I sent the DVD to Europe and they are experiencing major 'strobing' issues. I know there is some jitterness with HDV on motion scenes, but they are seeing constant strobing on their PAL DVD players. Am I doing something wrong. I took the DVD to a post house in Los Angeles, and it plays fine in their PAL systems. It actually play fine in my NTSC DVD player as well.
There isn't much motion in the film, mostly interviews.
Any clues of why this would happen?

It was originally shot in PAL 1080i50 on a Sony Zu1. I am assuming that is true PAL.
I made a DV PAL sequence first because the rendering time and conversion time to m2v files is much less.
Is the DVD burner that are installed on G5's capable of burning true PAL DVD's? I have one of the original G5's.

  • Pal DVD's playback speed... changeable?

My DVD drive is now permanently set to region 2. I have some Pal DVD's and am planning to buy a lot more. I know of the whole 24 fps vs 25 fps thing and I know of the problems with NTSC to Pal conversion. I also know it is possible to tinker with certain drives' playback speed, to slow/speed up a DVD that was supposed to play 1 frame faster/slower.
    So... how to do it?

  • PAL qt to DVD quality issues

Im trying to burn a PAL DVD from a PAL QT, but Im getting iffy results (Color washed out, subtitles blocky and pixelated) I ran it through comprssor at 90 min DVD best quality PAL, and burned to a disk, but the quality is not good to say the least.  Is there a better way to do this?

    Hi
Just for fun - What kind of quality do You get if You
    • Start an iDVD PAL project (don't change after movie is imported)
    • Then import Your QT (PAL) movie
    • Then select Pro Quality encoding
    • Then Save as a DiskImage
Is this one crappy too ?
    Just to still my curiosity.
    Yours very interested Bengt W

  • Trouble burning a PAL DVD

Hi, I am having issues with trying to burn PAL DVDs.
We have a distributor that requires PAL DVDs as screeners with & without TC burn.
They required we take our masters (HDCAM, 1920 X 1080, progressive, 23.98 fps) & send it to a post house that could do  an Alchemist conversion & make 1080 50i, 25 fps masters on HDCAM.
This was done & we have captured the tape to FCP in a PAL project. Exported out & files went through compressor using DVD Best quality - 90 min template.
Confirmed that files are correct size & speed in inspector.
In DVDSP i set the project up as PAL.
There are no menus - just the program with 5-6 chapter markers.
PAL DVD was created as region free.
When we check the DVD on a region free deck the playback is very jerky.
Have tried playback tests with commercial PAL DVDs & they play back fine.
Anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Using a 12 core macpro with FCS 3
If you need more detail please let me know .
    THANKS.

Russ: Converting the standard is not an option through Compressor as they absolutely need the timing to be the same. I am the post person, so it is not my call. The producer's have determined that this what they have to do (right or wrong). I can do a test with the master file in compressor to see if I get better results, but it is something that I cannot deliver.
Nick: Again it is not my call. I have pointed it out to the producers & was told that is not acceptable to them. So it is my hoop to jump through. I have told them about the NTSC DVDs vs PAL & their response is that is not acceptable. We don't need worry about DVD replication anymore as all of our sales will become either digital, or delivery through this means by the distributor from the HDCAM 50i masters & using the PAL DVDs as reference.
Michael: We are monitoring the video from FCP with an AJA KONA 3G card to a broadcast monitor thru SDI (dont remeber the exact model - think it is a panasonic monitor). I will try your test as well, but I think that if I can't get the DVDs to work the way they want them then they are going to get the post house that made the 50i masters to make the PAL DVDs for them as well. They would rather not do this as all I am told is it is expensive, so they would rather not. If it comes to it, and it might based on our deadline, then they will go that route if they feel forced to.
Thanks to all three of you for the suggestions.

  • Stuttering flv playback issue- need help asap

We need help asap. Have a project is due to deliver today (5/14).
We have a video to go on a dvd-rom, live action with Motion Graphics behind.
When output is done thru Projector the Motion Graphics stutter as they scroll.
    Here is more technical info:
    Stuttering flv playback issue:
Prores 422 timeline 29.97fps 1280x720 output from fcp using current settings.
Mov file is approx 7gb, plays relatively smooth on a mac pro with no raid.
Frame by frame analysis shows all frames are present with no jumps tears or skips.
Tried several output paths, programs and settings to create a smooth flv file to no avail.
We adjusted data rates from 2k, 3.5k, 4k and 8k, no luck
We adjusted keyframe rates from low to all frames, no luck.
We tried cs3 flash encoder, cs5 media encoder, squeeze ect, same results.
Playback in the flash projector seems to choke slightly no matter what we do.
Have also posted in the Director Forum.
    Any help much appreciated!

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head:
Try playing the file using a different xtra, sometimes different ones will work better.  If you have Director 11.5, there is a native flv playback xtra.
You can build a player easily in Flash using the flvPlayback component, then bring that into Director as a swf.
Once you have the video in Director, try making the member Direct To Stage (DTS).  If it is already DTS, try making it not DTS.
Make sure the video is not transparent, and nothing in Director overlaps the video... in fact, when the video is playing, nothing should be moving at all, and try to keep the amount of code that is running to a minimum.
Try lowering your video's data rate further or try using a different codec.
Using VBR (Variable Bit Rate) compression often makes the video appear to play smoother.
Try compressing the flv with different software.  FFMpeg, for example, is free and does a very good job, often better than the Flash Video Encoder that comes with Flash/Creative Suite.
