PAL or NSTC preference

Hello,
Is NTSC the default video encoding for QuickTime movies exported from iPhoto 9? Every time I go to burn an exported movie as a DVD video in Toast 10, I get the message that the encoding is NTSC and it needs to be re-encoded to PAL for UK use.
How do I change that default setting in iPhoto 9? Thanks...BC

Thanks for your reply.
The original source is an iPhoto slideshow from an iPhoto album containing standard jpegs - then File/Export/Quicktime - which saves the slideshow as a QuickTime movie.
I then open Toast 10/DVD-Video - transfer the file and punch the button - then the encoding warning comes up asking if I want to re-encode to PAL from NTSC - I punch OK and the re-encoding process takes up to ten minutes depending on the size of the movie....BC

  • PAL or NSTC, how can i tell what format the vid clip is?

The 2nd abbreviation might be wrong...
    concerning vid clips
How can you tell what format clips are in before iMovie tells you?
I don't want to combine the formats and cannot figure a way to tell the difference before trying to burn the dvd

At the top of the iMovie project window it will tell you by giving the name you gave to the project as well as 'DV NTSC, or DV NTSC Widescreen.
Somewhat confusingly, when you set your choice of NTSC or PAL in iMovie's preferences when starting a new project (you can't switch later), these are only identified as 29.95 fps (which is NTSC) and 25 fps (which is PAL). Once you have set that, all iMovie projects you start will default to the same until you change it. You cannot combine the formats in the same project.
As you are in the USA yours will probably default to NTSC which is the TV system you use there. In Europe we set it to PAL which is what we use here.
A bit rudely, we also say that NTSC stands for 'Never The Same Colour Twice'!
PAL used to stand for 'Prolongs Active Life', but that was actually the tag-line in a dog food commercial! But they are useful mnemonics to remember them by!

  • PAL NTSC importing issues

I tried to import an qtime that I thought was PAL and it said "cannot import NTSC asset into PAL project". I checked my settings and they were in PAL so I switched to NTSC. Now the error just says "format incompatible." I wanted to make a PAL project. What can I do?

Try converting the quicktime yourself thru compressor or other conversion program to the desired format and bring it in - see what happens? Also, be careful with the "PAL" vs "NTSC" preferences in StudioPro... when you change it - it ONLY effects projects CREATED from then forward, not previously created projects - the Format of the project (PAL vs NTSC) is embedded in the saved project after it is originally created regardless of what you change in the preferences after.

  • Exporting to PAL format

Is it possible to export a slideshow project in Aperture 3 to PAL (European) format so that I can copy it in iDVD to share with European friends? iDVD states that I must first change from NTSC to PAL in iDVD preferences and then import a project in PAL. It's the last instruction "import in PAL" that confuses me because that would require that I have Aperture encode the slideshow in PAL first. Any comments?

    Yes this is possible.
when you click export in the slide show window, top right hand corner you have the option to "Export for:" Click on this and select custom.
PAL requires the following for a Standard Def DVD video
    25 Frames per second
    4x3 768x576 pixels
    16x9 1024x576 pixels
To achieve these dimensions you will need to adjust your "Display Setting Panel" RHS just above your thumbnails.
Pretty sure that H.264 is the codec you want but play with that and see which gives you the best results.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem Rendering PAL

I am in the USA and I am having a recurring problem when trying to create a PAL DVD for my friend in Europe.
I first set the preferences in both iMovie and iDVD for PAL compatibility. iMovie preferences were set for 25 frames per second, and iDVD for PAL video format. I rebooted the computer to make sure the new preferences were applied before starting a new project.
Upon copmpletion of the iMovie (created with 25fps frame rate), I moved directly to iDVD and proceeded with the DVD process. Upon copmpletion of the DVD menu process, I attempted to render the project. After quite a while had passed while rendering (more than one hour) I received the following error message during the AUDIO rendering portion:
    The error #-34506 was reported…
Since above did not work, I tried to save the iDVD movie as a disk image (.img) then burn the disc image to disc later. I could not create the disk image as iDVD would hang and show the endless spinninbg beachball of death.
Does anybody have any advice on how to successfully create + render a PAL movie DVD ? What am I doing wrong ?
Thanks, in advance, for any helpful suggestions.
    Steve

    Lennart -
    Thank you !!!!
Thank you for both the short and "long" answers and for your fast reply. I appreciate the link that you provided. I will mail an NTSC DVD to my friends in Europe with confidence that they will work just fine onb their DVD players and TVs.
    All the best,
    Steve

  • Creating PAL Dvd's

I would like to burn a movie I created so that people in european countries can play it there. I have changed the frame rate, the preference in imovie to pal... but when i hit burn, it prompts me that i am about to burn a pal movie to an ntsc formatted disc. please help

Assuming you're using iDVD, have you changed the video standard to PAL in iDVD preferences? You're not using ReWritable Media by any chance.
BTW, was the source footage shot in PAL? It's not as simple as just changing the frame rate - you need to change the standard from NTSC to PAL. Try this:

  • HDV KGCore crash with Final Cut express 4 NEED HELP

I recently purchased a cannon hv30 hdv camera. This is my first time using High Def footage and I am now working on my first project with it. I have used Final cut express with a hard drive camera for over a year now and have made many projects with little problems. After importing my footage in the 1080i60 easy setup setting (around 63 minutes of footage) I began to add it to the sequence. after adding the first part I added the next imported section of hdv footage. The program then froze for a few seconds and crashed. It did this everytime I added the same clip into the sequence. sometimes the error said that kcgore plugin could be related. I called an apple rep and after getting rid of all 3rd party programs and reinstalling TWICE it still crashes after I recaptured the footage while I am either editing the footage or jsut playing it back. NEED HELP

Thanks I tried it again and it seems to be working but I crashed like once or twice when viewing the footage. But after starting it up again it is working fine it is jsut that the footage has these white flashes in it when playing back sometimes. I am not sure if it is going to crash again or not hopefully it is fixed. I was just using the hdv setting for 1080i60. Im not sure if it was pal or nstc I just used the basic hdv 1080i60 setting. also do you think I should upgrade my ram and memory? Would that help moving it up from a 1 gig to 2 or 4 when working wwith hd footage now?
    thanks again

  • [GeForce4 Ti] Ti4200 TV out doesn't work properly with 78.01 Nvidia Drivers

I downloaded the new Nvidia drivers because the computer was restarting suspiciously after installing a new DVD unit and cloning to the TV. I downloaded the drivers and installed, restarted and everything was working properly. However, when I tried cloning to the TV I got this black and white scrambling terrible image. I have tried checking the plug and everything, changing from PAL to NSTC-M (and some others too) but to no avail. Changing to another resolution, color, etc will only get it worse.
    Any suggestions?
    H A R A

Then just revert back to the 71.84's and see if the problem continues. Instead of going up, go back if you still have problems. You could even try the 71.89's
I don't recommend re-installing your OS unless you've done it before. It can be a big project if you haven't taken the proper steps to prepare. I don't do that unless it's absolutely necessary, you aren't there yet...
How about you read my suggestions for posting and getting better answers at the top of this vga forum, create a signature, then come back after trying the previous drivers, and if necessary, some older ones. If you stilll have problems, then come back with some history of your PC and what you've tried.
You may want to consider using driver cleaner http://www.drivercleaner.net make sure you read and follow the instructions...

  • Changing TV Standard - CRASH! Opening iDVD'04 project

I raised this before, was hoping that the 7.0.2 update was going to fix but no.
Is anyone out there from Apple? Helloooo! You have a defective product that I paid
for and can't use. do you care?
This is the displayed message when opening a project that was made with iDVD '04
    "Changing TV Standard
Changing the TV standard will require iDVD to encode all previously encoded assets again."
Which is total BS anyway as the standard has not changed, it was 4:3 PAL in the project and it is 4:3 PAL in the preferences
    Rapidly losing faith with Apple.

As a test I took an old iDVD 4 project on my 933 mhz G4 running Panther and saved it as an iDVD ARCHIVE with include Themes and Encoded Assets checked.
I then opened it on my 1.33 Ghz G4 Powerbook running Tiger and iDVD '08.
It 'sort of worked'. Things opened fine but I had a broken asset warning on video in the menu button. I was able to drag and drop the movie on the menu in the Map view to get rid of the broken asset warning, but the movie in the menu button doesn't play. The projects preview fine, but without the movie playing in the button.
Conclusion: an iDVD 4 PROJECT ARCHIVE with Themes and Encoded Assets included DOES open in iDVD '08, but may require some fixing.

  • Big trouble with importing my .MOV files into any editing software.

    Hi All
I am new to the forum and i would like to ask you a really big question that has been bugging me for days now.
I have a Cannon 700D and i have CS 4 pro and Cyberlink Powerdirector 12. Both worked fine with any other video file, but when i tried to import a file originating from my cannon 700D camera both of the softwares stated that the files were either corrupted or not supported. The error message also stated that i should call the video provider to ask for an alternative video footage (which is me ). I tried having quick time installed so that it could install various other kinds of CODEC so that it could read and I have also tried switching the camera settings from PAL to NSTC. I would be really glad if anybody could give me an explanation and a detailed explanaiton on how to fix my problem. Thank you very much in advance.

  • TV out Preferences revert back NTSC to PAL

When I play a movie on my iPhone and using TV Out to show it on my TV, during the movie the settings a changed automatically and NTSC is reverting back to PAL.
Does anyone know why is it happening and how can I resolve it?
    Thanks,
    Hadar.

In preferences you need to set next project to 25 fps (yes I know it should be PAL) and the
    b next
project will be PAL. Don't forget to do this again whenever you trash preferences.
If you import dv clips then iMovie will switch to the standard of the first import but if your project is created from slides you are constrained to the preference setting.

  • IDVD Preference setting for NTSC/PAL

I now understand that DVD's encoded to NTSC will almost certainly playback in UK on modern DVD Players.
    My question is this (iLife'06):
If I have an iMovie encoded as NTSC, what will changing the setting in iDVD Preferences from NTSC to PAL actually do?
    Will it ..
    i. Re-encode from 29 frames/480 lines to 25 frames/526 lines before encoding to the MPEG2 format?
    ii. Ignore the setting
iii. Make a complete mess of the MPEG2 data?
    iV. Other
    Thank you!

    i. Re-encode from 29 frames/480 lines to 25 frames/526 lines before encoding to the MPEG2 format?
Yes, but it does it by simply dropping a frame here and there so the output looks jerky. You get better quality conversion with 3rd party tools like JES Deinterlacer. And usually there is no point in converting NTSC to PAL because all PAL DVD players and almost all PAL TVs can display NTSC.

  • Can I import both from NSTC and PAL cameras in one project?

    Hi there.
    I have a question.
I am going to start on a project, a music video, and import video footage recorded from a SONY HVR-Z7U in America, that is 29.97fps NSTC.
I'm also going to film in Europe, with a Canon HV30, that is PAL.
So I wonder if there will be any problems importing both HD NSTC and HD PAL footage to a project? Or how should I do.
I have already opened a 1080i30(60) HD project in CS4 and started playing with the NSTC footage. Is it correct?
    Thank you

Why not shoot a trial clip in PAL and test it in your project?
