PAL problems

Tested using PAL DV camera connected via firewire but unable
to set correct aspect ratio or frame rate. Defaults to obscure
aspect ratio producing distorted images and 29.97fps which cannot
be changed. Also doesn't accept audio via firewire. Are these
modifications for the future ie. to allow use with PAL, DV audio?
Also any future support for 16x9?

I am having same kind of problems with FME and PAL sources.
The options for video input are 720x480 and 29,97fps. Living in
"the PAL world" there would be a need for 720x576, 25fps. When you
are doing a live broadcast, you would not want to worry about safe
areas.
What comes to the audio, FME recognizes my firewire sources
without a problem..
edit: Oops
Just checked some more. There is a problem with the input
preview, it crops 96px from the video(PAL). The output shows
everything. I am not sure if my eyes are fooling me, but it looks
like it is scaled a little. The frame rate is what concerns me
more. 25fps to 29.97fps is not always nice.
I have had a few crashes, but I guess it is more about loose
firewire than the conversion.

  • Exporting to tape PAL problem

    Hi all.
I am trying to export a timeline to tape from premiere pro CS4 to my Canon XL-2 camera.
The timeline settings are DV PAL, 25 fps, 16:9 aspect ratio, lower field first. I live in Australia and therefore have a PAL camera.
These are the settings that I used when using CS3 and exporting to tape was fine. The export process seems to run fine but when I review the tape there is nothing but black.
Premiere pro can control and capture from my camera fine, but when I try exporting it seems to show that it is working but results in nothing being taped.
I am running windows vista 64 bit, 4GB ram with a q6600 processor.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards.

    PROBLEM RESOLVED:
By fiddling with the device control properties the problem was resolved. Though I am not sure which setting corrected the problem, it may have been changing the device type from generic to canon XL1S (which is very similar to the XL-2).

  • NTSC & PAL Problems

I have come across a problem. I have been editing PAL footage in FCP not knowing that my project settings were set up in NTSC. I tried to reslove this problem by creating a new project and copying & pasting the existing edited work that I had done into this new project. As expexted there is a time lag with transitions/some images are distorted also. Does anyone know how I can reslove this problem without having to re edit my composition entirley?
This is urgent as there is a deadline.
    Thanks in advance

create a new NTSC sequence that matches the format of the original footage
open that new empty sequence in the timeline window
now drag the old (PAL) sequence from the browser and +whilst holding down the command key+ drop it onto the new (NTSC) sequence
next select all the clips now in your new sequnece (press cmd-a)
and press cmd-opt-v to open the remove attributes window
check the scale checkbox and click OK
hopefully that should have fixed it

  • Dv wide screen pal problem

I’m tying to make some titles in live type.
The project settings in fcp are pal wide screen. I’m making an in and out point in the time line and then exporting by going file export QuickTime movie. The movie is a reference file.
I’ve opened live type and tried place or place background movie but this is where it seems to go wrong.
The clip looks like is 4:3 and looks squashed. When I look in the project settings its not the same as final cut.
In the settings I have the following choice for pal
    ccir 601 pal 5:4
    ccir 601 pal sq. 4:3
The project in fcp is pal dv anamorphic. Do I need to change these setting to be correct in live type or do I ignore them?
I’ve tried typing in 720x576 and for pixel aspect ratio 1.46. The canvas changes size but the video clip doesn’t. I have to select the clip and and click stretch to canvas. Is all of this normal or am I doing something wrong?

  • NTSC Pal problem.

    Hi There,
I have done a PAL project and created a SD PAL DVD and this was all fine. Now someone is wanting a NTSC version and I am wondering if the fact that I just switch the project settings to NTSC if the PAL assets will automatically convert to NTSC. The reason I ask this is because it will be very difficult to go back to FCP and export the film as an NTSC.
If anyone has any advice or experience of this I would be most grateful
    Many thanks

    Hi:
Sorry but you have to do all manually. You cannot change DVD standard in the DVDSP project.
You must change all menu graphic assets to fit the NTSC dimensions (i.e. all PSD menu backgrounds and overlays) and can use Compressor standard conversions presets to re-encode your PAL Quicktime Movie to a NTSC movie and use it as source for your new NTSC MPEG2 videos.
You'll find detailed information about the graphic sizes for NTSC in the DVDSP User Manual, and seraching in the forums (try FCP Forum too) you'll find a lot of threads with different approachs for movie standard conversion.

  • From NTSC to PAL .mov - huge, urgent problem!!

Ive shot a shortfilm on a Canon XH A1 NTSC, 24 fps, HDV, 16:9.
It has been edited in FCP and exported as a Quiktime Movie (.mov)
Then i burned it to a DVD and discovers that it lags annoyingly when played on a DVD player (Im from Denmark so its PAL).
Now, i thought running it through FCP would have solved the NTSC / PAL problem automatically, but I was wrong.
How do I make my 23.98 fps Quiktime Movie play on a PAL DVD?? I tried Cinema Tools, but it wont open and conform the .mov file.
I have to turn it in tomorrow and seriusly need help.
    Thank you so much...

    Hi,
    welcome to FCP discussion area.
A great standard converter is [Nattress Standard Converter|http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconvers ion.htm].
However, if you have Compressor you may convert from NTSC to PAL at no cost.
    Compreesor settings>Other Workflows>Advanced Format Conversion>Standard Definition.

  • Question re: IDVD, PAL and exporting

    Greetings:
I have an IMac Intel Core 2 Duo running OS X and am using Imovie HD 6.
    Here's my situation.
I have a PAL DVD with dialogue in a foreign language. I need to add subtitles to it. I imported the DVD file into Imovie (I first had to convert the DVD to a quicktime file). I added the subtitles and saved the new Imovie file. So far so good. Originally I exported it back to a DVD via IDVD but there was some compression and the image would occasionally "jump" around, or skip a frame.
I thought I could just export the Imovie file directly to a DV tape via a Sony DSR-11 DV recorder so there wouldn't be as much compression, and I could avoid the skipping.
Unfortunately, when I tried exporting to my mini-DV tape, the result was horrible with lots of squares and distortion. (I know this since I played it back on my camcorder). Meanwhile, I can't even play the DV tape back on Imovie, since it says that "The camera is sending half-sized frames, which iMovie HD can’t accept."
I searched around online, and it seems to be an NTSC-PAL problem. I don't know how to fix it, since my DSR-11 doesn't allow me to select NTSC or PAL - it just chooses the format.
I was thinking I could export the Imovie file to Quicktime, and then from Quicktime to the DV. Would this work? It seems I would have to purchase Quicktime 7 PRO to export the file. I don't mind buying the software if it will solve the problem.
I also read online somewhere about an application called "JES Deinterlacer" Unfortunately, I'm a total amateur when it comes to films and know little about formatting sizes, ratios, etc. I really don't mind if the final DVD or DV tape is NTSC or PAL, since my players can play either - I just want it to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can yield the highest quality video with the subtitles in place? I would hope this would be possible!
Thanks so much for any advice.
    Best wishes!

I looked up the specs for your Sony recorder and it says that you must use a switch on the back to set it from NTSC to PAL. The sampling rates are different, so if you are recording in the wrong one, you will get that jumping and skipping. Here is the info I found:
+The Sony DSR-11 DVCAM Digital Videocassette Recorder, with its unique design and small footprint, can be easily integrated into your existing nonlinear editing system. Providing basic VTR features, along with an i.LINK interface and NTSC/PAL compatibility, this VTR provides a highly powerful, yet cost-effective option for nonlinear editing systems.+
+The DVCAM Format for Excellent Picture and+
+The DSR-11 uses the DVCAM format, the professional extension of the worldwide standard DV format. The DVCAM format uses 8-bit digital component recording with a 5:1 compression ratio and a sampling rate of 4:1:1 (for NTSC) / 4:2:0 (for PAL). The unique compression algorithm provides excellent picture quality and superb multi-generation performance. It also offers superior digital audio performance, providing a wide dynamic range and excellent signal-to-noise ratio that are comparable to CD quality. Alternative audio channel modes can be selected: a two-channel mode with 48 kHz/16-bit recording or a four-channel mode with 32 kHz/12-bit recording.+
+DVCAM cassette tapes are available in two sizes: standard and mini. The standard-size DVCAM cassette provides a recording time of up to 184 minutes, while the mini-size cassette provides up to 40 minutes.+
+The DSR-11 is capable of recording and playing back DV format tapes (SP mode only). The standard-size cassette can record for up to 270 minutes, while the mini-size cassette records for 60 minutes.+
+The DSR-11 has the unique feature of being NTSC/PAL compatible. It can record and playback tapes with either color system. The DSR-11 does not convert signals from NTSC to PAL, or vice versa. When recording through the analog input, the switch on the rear panel must be manually set to the color system of the original source.+
Try that first, and if it does not fix your difficulty, post back for more assistance.

  • N900 TV Out issue

Hello, My TV out connections were not working properly when I am connecting to an external monitor. Although, my headphones are working fine. I checked with other TV out cables but same results. My phone is updated to current memo version. Help me out from this issue. Regards

Some TV-out cables use non-standard wiring (especially ones for in vehicle DVD players or asian brands).
Try connecting the red and white connector too...
If your monitor doesn't even flicker there's probably a hardware problem or a very strange software problem. If you do get a very short flicker, it's probably a NTSC/PAL problem with your monitor not supporting one of them.
I've tried dozens of cables and never had any problems what so ever, although it's always a surprise which RCA connector is which.

  • Color sending out bad color!

OK so I did the update for Color this morning (yeah I know, middle of a project not a good idea).
I opened up my project and it looked very different. Everything had an excess of red through it. Flesh tones were screaming red. So I figured maybe the project was affected by the update, so seeing as I wasn't too far in I started from scratch with a new sequence from FCP. Still too red. I then recalibrated my monitor and and ran SMPTE bars through FCP and Color. They checked out ok on the scopes and the monitor. Sent another new sequence to Color and still way too red. A comparison from the computer monitor to the broadcast monitor in FCP shows no significant shift but the same shot within Color has a HUGE shift.
I'm using PAL footage digitised at 10-bit uncompressed Kona 3. Mac Pro Dual Quad, ATI X1900.
Anyone else having a similar problem?

I'm getting the same thing here. REALLY overly saturated renders in PAL. I;m also getting a noticeable difference in renders in NTSC too but nowhere near as bad the PAL problem.
I just graded a clip shot in ntsc where I did the basic grade in Colour before converting it to PAL in Shake for its final output. I had accepted the small shift in colours from Colour to FCP in NTSC but when I put the PAL footage in to do a tweak and sent it back it was horrible!
So now do all us PAL users have to wait for 1.0.2 to get a vaguely functional product?
    Cheers,
    Toby

  • Workflow Design in Oracle Database

    Hi Pals,
Problem : Designing a Vendor Management Application which will keep track of all the request created, approved, rejected or in between of any business process.
    Front end: Java
    Backend : Oracle
I am new to Database Design so forgive my technical writing.
Client want business logic on database end only.
    Here is an example :
    1. New Request for IT enabled services created in application.
    2. This Request should go to concerned department such as Finance, Sourcing, Legal etc.
    3. We have to keep track of every activity (Modify, Approved, Rejected or cancelled) done by each department.
    4. Each Request will go to different departmet for approval based on type such as Software Services, Hardware, Software & Maintenence.
    5. At each phase of request, We have to notify requestor + approver about the status of request by Email (Also from Backend).
    6. We also have to maintain audit trail for some attributes for each phase of request in database.
Could you please suggest any idea how we can implement such workflow in database ?
Any link or any suggestion is welcomed..
    Many Thanks in advance
    Kamal

    Hi Sybrand Bakker,
First of all.. Thanks a lot for replying.
It's perfectly make sense that answer to my question will take hours. I don't want anybody to do such large amount of work without being paid. That's the reason I clearly mentioned that any link or suggestion is welcomed...
Here is what we are trying to implement just for information"
    1. Workflow Table : for Each Type of workflows such as Software Services, software & hardware etc.
    2. Workflow_Task Table : Each Workflow can have multiple tasks assigned and in particular order in this table.
    3. Request_Info Table : We will check the type of request, then according to workflow tables, we will assign a set of tasks to that request in say request_process_tasks table.
    4. Request_Contract : For keep a track of record of activites taking place on request, we can keep records in Request_Contracts table.
Just want to know if this kind of table structure is somewhat okay to start with (Ready to face challanges later :) )
Just looking for guidelines or any link which can help how to prioritize things and all that..
One simple question : In Normal CRM or Ticketing system, do we keep such kind of business relations on database or application front end.
Which one is better Database or Applicaiton front end to keep workflow ?
Hope These are some questions which can be answered in less than 30 Mins...
    Thanks a lot Sir :)

  • Mini DVI-to-Composite (PAL): Video sync problems

    Hi all,
I have a rather awkward-to-explain specific question and I'm wondering if anyone knows enough about video to explain it...
I've recently been using my MacBook to play back video through the DVI port to my PAL TV (UK). I have the Mini DVI to video adapter.
The problem I am having is with video frame rates. If I play a PAL video through the MacBook (25fps), it seems to play it back on the TV with no problems. However, if I try to play any video that has a rate of 24fps, it *starts off* okay for maybe 5-10 minutes, but then the picture becomes really juddery and difficult to watch. If I am using video mirroring I notice that on the LCD screen, the video has started updating frames midway through a screen refresh (you can see a "ripple" running through the picture).
I do have a way round this problem at the moment... I burn them all to DVD using Toast. Unfortunately though this means about 12 hours of encoding for each DVD, not to mention that I'm getting through so many discs!!
The result of converting the videos to DVD is that every second there is a slight pause, but this is still miles better than the output from the MacBook directly to the TV.
Does any of the above make sense? Any ideas on how I can solve this little problem? Anyone? Thanks!
    :-Joe

Yes it's PAL... I've tried all resolutions, both PAL and NTSC. Obviously all the colours are washed out on NTSC but both have the flicker problem
Like I say it's fine when running a PAL video - but if I play one recorded in 24fps (ie HD content, DVD content) then I get the flicker problem after a few minutes. Maybe it's something to do with the processing power? Although I can watch the videos fine on the LCD screen.
I've used Quicktime Player, VLC and Wide Screen Movie Player, all give me the same problem.
Maybe I should use this as an excuse to get an HDTV

  • Output to create Region 2 PAL DVD Problem

I recently completed a 35 minute sequence, with my Audio/Video settings for sequence set as DV PAL 48 Khz. I exported a QT movie set at DV PAL 48 Khz. I then used this file with Roxio Toast set to PAL to burn a DVD. The burn was done on my G4 Powerbook, which is currently set to REGION 1. When the DVD was complete, it plays perfectly on a televison monitor connected to a REGION 2 DVD PLAYER. BUT, it seems that it won't play on a computer where the DVD drive is set to region 2. The error message is something like: "Unrecognizable DVD." Did I make an error in the FCP output? What might be the source of this problem? Any suggestions on how to use this FCP QT output to create a DVD that will play via a computer as well as a DVD player for region 2?

    Pamela:
Something else. I cannot found in my Toast 7 settings any reference to "region" in DVD settings. I'm pretty sure that Toast (and even iDVD) creates region free video discs.
Video standard (PAL or NTSC) has no relationship with region settings.
DVDs from Europe are PAL and region 2 but those are independent settings when authoring the disc: PAL content doesn't mean "automatic" region 2.
In pro authoring applications (like DVDSP) you can set the region to anything you want no matter the video standard (PAL or NTSC).
    EDIT
Just to confirm that iDVD creates Region Free discs:

  • Problem capturing PAL video into FCE HD

I'm having a problem capturing video from a PAL MiniDV tape. The tape was recorded on a PAL camera during a shoot in India; when I got home with the tapes the cameraman gave me, I was unable to view them on (or capture them from) my (NTSC) Canon GL-1 to my PowerBook G4 running FCE HD3.5.1 (external hard drive).
I borrowed a friend's Sony Handycam and CAN view the tape without a problem on that, AND get a "VTR OK" message in the FCE "Capture" window (though I get color bars and a "Preview Disabled" screen). I can also control the tape playback from the FCE Capture interface.
However, when I click "Capture Now", after clicking the "Play" button, I get a dialogue box that says "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
I have tried a number of different "Easy Setup" device control options, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm going to correct myself ... although I was able to capture the contents of ONE tape, after that the problem returned and I cannot capture anything else (even that same tape). So it seems the "solution" was not "FireWire-all-the-way" but remains out of my reach for the moment ...
