Pal to 24fps back to pal

cutting a feature in beijing... transferring 35mm to minidv (25fps pal) to cut on fcp 5...
plan to cut in 24fps using conforming function in fcp... anyway to convert back to 25fps pal... manual only describes using a 24p capable vtr...
thanks,

Yep use Cinema Tools with the self contained exports. You can alter the frame rate to your hearts content in CT.
If you think it will save a significant amount of time if you were just able to export a QT Reference file instead of a Self Contained QT file (i.e. there is not much rendering needed), then you can download a package called 'DVD Film Transformer' which includes a small utility called 'Frame Rerater'.
http://homepage.mac.com/dvdsphelper/Commerical/DFT.html
Although the main DVD Transformer component is not needed (and does not work under QT 7.0 anyway), all you want is the Frame Rerater utility. It is able to create a new QT Ref file with your chosen frame rate and so does the same as Cinema Tools, only it can do it with QT Ref files (which CT can't).
Give it a try to check it works for you first using the demo (you have to register) and if you do want to use it does cost $99 (you're basically paying for the component you don't need, but its the only way to get Frame Rerater).
One day I'm going to learn how to make an app that does this myself. I contacted the developer and he was, shall we say, less than pleasant about releasing Frame Rerater on its own - so currently this is the only app which will work for frame rate alterations on QT reference files (that I know of).
Patrick, I thought the 2GB limit in CT only effected NTSC Reverse Telecine operations, have you come across this with PAL conform frame rate alterations too?

  • Convert 24FPS NTSC to PAL with 4% time change?

I have a 24fps HD master and I've produced NTSC SD DVDs from this using Compressor. Now, for submission to a festival in Europe, I need to generate a PAL DVD. I would be very happy to do this as a frame for frame transfer and have the overall speed/running time slightly altered, RATHER than have the software (final cut or compressor?) try to interpolate my 24 frames into 25 frames per second.
I can't find any doc with Compressor that clarifies whether this is possible.

Jim, I'm out of my knowledge base here, but the forum seems to be semi-functional today, so here's my thought...
IIRC, many European DVD players will read NTSC DVD's. (I'm sure others will clarify this if I'm wrong) This is not to say you should rely on that as a solution.
I've seen this discussed here previously, so try searching the forum while you're waiting for better info.

  • Anamorphic PAL DV to H.264 (Pal 16:9)

    Hi all,
First I'll confess to being a noob to video editiing etc. and have the following issue:
    *The Setup:*
Recording = MacPro (OS 10.6.3), capturing into Final Cut Pro via a ADVC300 Firewire unit. This Set to capture DV PAL 48k Anamorphic.
Playback = Mac Mini connected to Sony EX503 via DVI>HDMI converter. (Sound out put through optical).
    *The Process:*
Basically new to Final Cut & Compressor so appologize for ignorance.
Basic premise is this I initial record programs on our SKY HD box. The ones we want to keep I capture on the MacPro via the ADVC300. Edit out all the adverts etc in FCP. Then Export out the edited DV stream (as DV video).
Then Drop the edited DV stream into compressor and compress with the following settings:
    Name: Untitled QuickTime Movie 1
    Description: No description
    File Extension: mov
    Estimated size: unknown
    Audio Encoder
    IMA 4:1, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: 720
    Height: 576
Pixel aspect ratio: PAL CCIR 601 (16:9)
    Crop: None
    Padding: None
    Frame rate: 25
    Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 100
    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Key frame interval: 25
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
I then copy onto the mac mini and play back on the TV via Front Row.
    *The Problem:*
Recording is fine as is editing and outputing the edited DV stream to a QT file. However when I drag onto compressor and compress with the included settings to create my small play back file is were the problem lies. The final H.264 file plays fine in quicktime player (looking wide screen), both on the MacPro and Mini. However when played through Front Row the aspect ratio is a 4:3 (but slightly smaller in the frame) image instead of 16:9.
Now the original capture by FCP is a DV - PAL, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), which looks squashed.
After editing and saving from FCP the new edited stream is DV - PAL, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), and displays 16:9 in quicktime.
However after compression the files is ; H.264, 720 x 576, Millions AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz and looks fine in quicktime play but not in Front Row. Incidentally the edited DV streams look fine in front row.
Any advice on what I need to do to make the final H.264 file a PAL 720x576 (16:9) which displays correctly through Front Row.
    Thanks
    Steve
By the way the only thing that has seemed to work is using apples 'apple tv' settings for SD anamorphic but this works on the NTSC 480 lines (which means loosing rez) or 'Apple TV' HD 720 (16:9) but this looks too pixelated.

  • DVD Player has started playing PAL DVD's on external PAL display very badly

I have my Early 2006 iMac connected to an external HDTV (Mini-DVI->HDMI)
Using display options I can switch the external display easily between NTSC and PAL refresh rates.
It used to be that apple's DVD player could play a PAL dvd just fine on the display but now the frame rate drifts in and out of sync as though it no longer understands that the TV is set to 50hz.
Although I used to use DVD player all the time I haven't done so for quite some months so I don't know when this started happening although I have a feeling that it was with a recent OS X update.
I say this because a few months ago all of a sudden the same thing happened with Elgato's EyeTV, but they issued a patch sometime later and it fixed the v-sync issue for their app.
I'm also wondering if it may be a de-interlacing issue rather than a v-sync issue but I'm not sure, I've tried various DVD's.
I have tried deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer but this hasn't helped.
If it's relevant, my iMac has an ATI Radeon X1600
Any ideas why DVD player has started having trouble with 50hz displays and how I might fix it?
Failing that, is there a good (hopefully free) dvd player alternative which is better at handing external displays of varying display modes?
p.s this was the most appropriate forum I could find.

I suggest that you create 15-second silent audio slug that you can use to move the audio the same amount you have moved the video.

  • F10-125: PAL I (uk) vs. PAL B/G (continent)

I'm considering buying a F10-125 in UK or Holland, since i spend time in both countries on a regular basis. I noticed that the F10-125 is sometimes indicated with PAL/SECAM spec and other times as just PAL. Since some vendors say the UK spec machine just can show TV at the PAL I standard (as used in UK) and not PAL B/G or Secam and others sa it can even do NTSC (which i'm sure it can't) i wonder if this is the correct machine for me.
In other words is the PAL machine suited for both UK and continental PAL? So can i buy it in Holland or UK and can i watch TV on it in my place in Holland as well as in London?
Hope somebody out there can shed some light on this...

    Hi
As far as I know you can watch TV in both countries but you should at first set TV type in BIOS settings to PAL. In Windows media Center there is possible to change TV Signal for every region. I have noticed that there are 260 different regions from the entire world.
I didnt try to configure my WMC in another country but in my opinion there is no reason why this should not work in both countries that you have mentioned.

  • Should Progressive Source Pal Footage Be Encoded with "PAL DV Wide Progressive" Preset for DVD?

    Hi,
I'm wondering how best to encode a 1080p25 video for DVD.  Should I encode with Media Encoder's PAL DV Wide Progressive Preset?  Or should I used the other preset, which I'm assuming is interlaced?

The wide progressive preset is correct. Avoid interlacing. If you end up with little black bars showing on the Export Settings "Output" window, you can change Source Scaling to "Scale to Fill" to eliminate black edges. At bottom of export settings, select "Max Render Quality" for best downscale quality.
EDIT: just to clarify, you do want the "MPEG-2 DVD" format, and THEN choose the PAL DV Wide Progressive preset.

  • Problems capturing 16:9 PAL video to 16:9 PAL project ??!!

I have captured video material straight from DVD-player with Canopus using Firewire. My project is D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.4587) 720 x 576 and the captured video material should be the same (or some of it). For some reason all of the captured video from DVD-player has pixel aspect ratio (1,094) 720 x 576. I guess thats the reason why they have these black borders (look pic), but in source monitor they show fine.. Can I fix this or do I just have to strech the image??  Some of the videos were 3:4 and they show normally (with black bars on sides)

When I had to hammer a nail in the wall, I used a screwdriver. Whaaaat? I reallyreally hate my screwdriver.
CS4 is not the right tool for DVD material. DVD material is not suited for editing, it has already been edited and is now suitable for watching.
Original material I captured before shows fine
That is what you should use, original material.

  • Monitoring a PRORES PAL sequence through Apple Firewire PAL audio problem

Hi I have some materiels in HDV 1080i50, y made a PRORES PAL Sequence and scaled and rendered it. Now I need to monitor the material and I tried the "on the fly" conversion to DV choosing as video output the "Apple Firewire PAL"setting. Video is ok, the computer makes the conversion and it works swell, but with the audio I just get this stange noise, where I can hear th original audi but very, very low and al is noise...
    Am I doing something wrong?
Is possible to monitor this "HDV passed to PRORESS PAL" through the DV conversion?
    any help?

  • TV out Preferences revert back NTSC to PAL

When I play a movie on my iPhone and using TV Out to show it on my TV, during the movie the settings a changed automatically and NTSC is reverting back to PAL.
Does anyone know why is it happening and how can I resolve it?
    Thanks,
    Hadar.

In preferences you need to set next project to 25 fps (yes I know it should be PAL) and the
    b next
project will be PAL. Don't forget to do this again whenever you trash preferences.
If you import dv clips then iMovie will switch to the standard of the first import but if your project is created from slides you are constrained to the preference setting.

  • 23.98 or 24 or 23.796 to 25 frame pal

hi all, i have a film (shot in dvcprohd) with audio recorded and edited at 23.976/23.98 or 24 frames per second (not sure) that needs to go to PAL. the lab converted the PAL digibeta (with four tracks audio) from the HD version. the digibeta runs shorter than the HD version so no frames were duplicated, the timecode was simply rewritten. we now have to get our 5.1 mix to match.
how do i now match the audio to the video? i've seen references to resampling but not sure how to do this. we've resampled the stems to 50050hz but they're the exact same length as when they were 48K. i need to get them back to 48K while shortening the length, correct? thanks in advance.

FCE does not handle 24fps (23.98 fps) material.  Never did.  FCE only handles certain frame sizes/rates/codecs, and you cannot make specific settings other than what is available in the Easy Setups.
24 fps is a progressive mode; for editing in FCE you would have to convert it to an interlaced mode; or to 720p 25 or 30.  If you are in North America then that would be 60i or 30p.  The 25 fps/50i Easy Setups are PAL (European) settings.
My main suggestion is to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X.   All other ways of editing the video in FCE involve converting the frame rate, which is not a great thing to have to do as there is always some loss of quality.  You might look into JES Deinterlacer or MPEG Streamclip to convert the frame rate to one that is supported in FCE.

  • NTSC or PAL default on startup

I am using v3.1 FME on a Windows 7 x64 Home Premium desktop with a Diamond VC500 video capture card.  Whenever I start the computer and run FME, it will by default select the PAL video mode.  Once I go through the toolbox and switch it to NTSC, it will work correctly.  I have tried saving the profile and the startup profile.  As long as the computer is running, it will remember to use NTSC.  However, once the computer has been powered down, the next time it is turned on it will go back to PAL.  Is there a way to have it start with NTSC format by default?  Thanks !

when we install drivers of a devce it gives us a option to select the default Video format. like for example Viewcast drivers chooses NTSC as default ones if you donot specifically change it while installation of drivers.
please try reinstalling of drivers to see if that option is availble because this is device's level settings.

  • Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

  • DVD Burn - NTSC/PAL

I've got an old video clip that I'm trying to burn to DVD. Whether I try Toast, or iMovie/iDVD, when I go to burn, it "defaults" to PAL.
Even if I set it to burn NTSC, when I click "burn" it defaults back to PAL.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

What version of Toast? When I try to do this it asks first.

  • PAL with NTSC video

Hello - if I record video using NTSC standard, I can use Premirere to output to PAL standard as well.  What are the drawbacks?  Is the PAL "quality" going to be equivalent?  I know that the frame rate between NTSC and PAL (PAL using more frames, 25p vs 24fp, for example) is different, but how's that going to affect my final product?  Can anyone clarify this?
    Thanks.
    Roberto

If your end product is going to be a dvd for a PAL country leave it in NTSC.
NTSC will play just fine on almost any standalone PAL dvd player.
BTW PAL is better than NTSC.

  • How do I export a final cut express movie in both PAL & NTSC formats?

I am wanting to provide both a NTSC and PAL verion of a movie onto a DVD, how can I do this using final cut express?

Ok, I have successfully converted a DV-NTSC video to DV-PAL using Nattress Standards Conversion in FCE. The resulting output file (a self-contained QT movie) verfied as PAL in QuickTime movie inspector, 720x576 at 25fps and it plays perfectly, the video looks great, and the sound is in sync.
I had to figure out a workaround for one step in the documentation (Graeme uses an FCPro feature called 'nest items' that doesn't exist in FCExpress. I got around that by manually creating a second PAL sequence instead - see below).
If you're starting with an NTSC video, the basic procedure I used is this:
1 - create a PAL sequence and place the NTSC clip in that sequence (yes, that's right)
2 - create a second PAL sequence (add the word NEST to the name so you can tell which sequence is which)
3 - nest the first PAL sequence in the second PAL sequence
4 - open the second PAL sequence (the NEST) in the viewer by Control-clicking its timeline and select +Open in Viewer+
5 - apply the G Converter filter to the NEST (which is now open in the Viewer)
6 - click the filters tab in the Viewer so you can see the G Converter filter
7 - drag the +original NTSC clip+ from the Browser to the +Source Clip well+ in the filter
8 - verify that the other G Converter settings are what you need, especially that you have checked "Nested", "High Quality" and "Source is NTSC-DV" and that the convert setting is NTSC->PAL (these are the defaults, but you should verify them anyway)
9 - render the NEST sequence ... +this may take as long or longer than the length in time of your sequence+
10 - export the NEST sequence as a self-contained QT movie ... which will now be a PAL movie
One other note, the Standards Conversion filters need to be copied to the +Library > Application Support > Final Cut Express Support > Plugins+ folder (not the Final Cut Pro Support > Plugins folder as specified in the documentation)
If you are going to try this with your project, I suggest the following:
1 - edit your movie in an NTSC sequence. After completing all your edits (when you are done editing) export it as a +self-contained QT movie+ (it will be an NTSC movie)
2 - re-import the exported NTSC movie back into FCE (it will now be your complete movie as one large clip)
3 - follow the instructions above for using the G Converter filter to create the PAL version of your movie (using the re-imported movie as the only clip you will put in the first PAL sequence, and in the Source Clip well in the converter filter.)
You can use your first export (the self-contained NTSC movie) to create your NTSC DVDs; and the second export (the self-contained PAL movie) to create your PAL DVDs.
