PAL VHS TO NTSC

I have a client my first with PAL format and he wants his wedding tape converted and pressed to DVD.
My question is am i able to do this with a standard VHS unit and FCP.
Will i have to do something special or just use a different preset while capturing in FCP5. Thanks Charles

You'll need a deck that can play back his PAL VHS tape (capturing it as PAL, then doing a conversion in the end in Compressor)... a multi-standard VHS player, and a way to capture PAL (like an ADVC-110)...
Or get a standards conversion done to NTSC, then capture and work in NTSC just as you have in the past.

Hello.  I have a VHS tape recorded in PAL format and
NO PAL VHS player. Is it still possible to convert using FCP (X)?

you need two kind of conversions:
    • digitizing it => additional hardware to convert analogue to digital
    • converting it => FCPX can handle both standards ...
    but ...
PAL/NTSC were 'hardwired' into players; just very few, expensive ones were 'multi norm'.
so, your PAL tape is in a NTSC world of no use.
I would suggest to ask some professional converting service to 'digitize' it; in case, the resulting file has 25fps, you can use FCPX or many other free tools (eg JES Deinterlacer) for conversions. or the conversion-service does it for you 'in one rush'.-

  • Creating NTSC DVD from PAL VHS input

I have a PAL VHS tape that I have just captured in AVI format using a Canopus ADVC-55 bridge.  The settings I used in PE10 were DV PAL (as I am in Australia).  I am now going to produce a DVD of the footage for use in Australia, but I also need to send a copy to my cousin in the USA, where they use NTSC.  The whole PAL/NTSC process confuses me somewhat and I would appreciate some guidance.
    1. If I create a PAL DVD for viewing here, is it right that it won't play in a DVD player in the USA?  If it won't, can I create a DVD with output settings NTSC even though the input setting was PAL?
    2.  If I don't create a playable DVD as output, but instead just create an MPEG file and burn the MPEG file to a DVD to be read on a PC, will it read on a PC in the USA?
    3.  Should I recapture the footage, setting the ADVC-55 to NTSC (rather than PAL), and the project settings to DV NTSC?  I have tried this and it seems to work, much to my surprise, as I thought the VHS tape itself was in PAL format and hence would not capture with NTSC settings.

Although most PAL DVD players will play NTSC video -- you are correct that virtually no US NTSC DVD players can play PAL video. And that's true whether you burn a DVD file or an MPEG to a disc. It's a different aspect ratio, resolution and frame rate.
But you can use Share/Computer/AVI with the NTSC DV preset to output an NTSC DV file of your project. Then you can start up an NTSC DV project, load that file into it and burn an NTSC DVD from that.
It won't be perfect. But the program does to a pretty good job of interpretting your video from one format to another.

  • PAL VHS Windows tape to iMovie

I have family in the UK. They have PAL VHS videos and a windows computer. They have the software to convert VHS to digital format on their computer (Windows based). In what format can they send it to me so that I can import the movies into my USA iMAC imovie program.
    Please help.
    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi mushanga,
    welcome to this forum
    * PAL/NTSC are both supported by your Mac.. (both video standards use diff. resolution, diff. frame rates/depends on frequency of powerlines, we have 50Hz you have 60Hz...) so, that is no problem... a few words about that at the end...
    * VHS is analogue, that has to be "digitized" in some way, you told us, this is no problem either...
    * Windows... hm?
    * Transport... hm (again)?
    best quality/storage problem:
a modern PC is able to create "dv" codec; that is the native compressor of iM too... they should import VHS and create "dv"-files... problem: 1hour = 13GB.... or, 20min on one dataDVD (NOT! videoDVD!)... or, they should buy a ext. drive, send later that to you... $$$$$$
    less quality/dataDVD...
a modern PC is able to create mp4... that IS a lossy processor, but with a higher bitrate creates good/very good pic quality... (all Apple Keynotes before '05 were trasnmitted in mp4); you can store 1, 2 hours on a dataDVD... needs conversion (=lossy process, but, hey, it was just VHS!)
    less quality/video DVD
they should create a videoDVD (PAL), can accomplished by MANY PC apps; 2h on per disk; get DVDxDV, it has a 30d trial period (testdrive sets a watermark)... and cost 25$; convert videoDVD into dv (PAL); process files in iM; follow advice at end of this posting...
conversion to and from videoDVD is lossy... but in means of coast & efficiency.. this is a home project.......
    worst case:
they are just able to create .wmv files/store to a dataDVD; then, you need to buy a plug-in form www.flip4mac.com and will realize some dramatic loss of quality....
    PAL/NTSC:
as said, your Mac doesn't care for video standards...
but, if you want your family's footage finally on YOUR tape or a videDVD for a USplayer, it needs standards-conversion:
DeInterlacer is a fantastic tool (for free!) doing format conversions; you edit in iM (in PAL), export as FullQuality QT, import that into JESDeinterlacer, get a new dv, import that into iDVD (now, as NTSC)..
iDVD allows the import of PAL for creating NTSC videoDVD, but results are... not so overwhelming.
lots of info, but give it a try.........
    hope, that helps........

  • Pal vhs?

I am going to be digitizing from a pal vhs tomorrow and someone told me that i need to get a pal black burst generator....could this be right...i though i would just need the power adapter and away we go.....? no?

ok i got these tapes, pal vhs, i opened up my hdv project, hooked up the vcr, and set it to pal, not using the BBG, then the picture was just flipping, I then switchd it to ntsc on the vhs and switched my capture preset to ntsc, and it works just fine, what is that, is it not pal, and they just though it was. I am using one of those analog to digital converter bridges, I mean is seems like everything is just fine, I was hoping to learn a little something here but I am confused why its working and everything is set to ntsc?
    Thanks

  • How do I convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, menus and all?

    Hello everyone,
I've been given a set of PAL DVD's which need to be converted into NTSC. Now, from my understanding, there is no one program available that can do this, so I've had to rip all the video tracks off, convert them to NTSC mp2's and author the DVD from the ground up in DVDSP, build a VIDEO_TS file, then use Toast to compress to a single layer DVD and burn. If anyone knows a program that can convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, that would be greatly appreciated.
The next problem is that when I burn any of the DVD's and put them in a duplication tower (I'm not sure if that's the actual name, but it's one of those machines where you just put the original disc in the top drive and fill the other 8 or so drives under it with blanks), it says that the burn has failed. I have tried another duplication tower and end with the same result. One option I have not tried just yet is to change the brand of media I'm using to burn, but will do so next chance I get.
I'm not sure if the two problems are related or not, but I just thought it would help.
    Thanks in advance.

    2 options.
    1) Best option - only available if you have the source material - Convert source material from PAL to NTSC using the Nattress standards converter.
    http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconversion.htm
    or the JES deinterlacer:
    http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html
It's also possible to do this in Compressor but not as good quality and longer render times.
    2) If you don't have the source footage, you'll need to demux the file in MPeg Streamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/
then transcode the file as described here:

  • Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

  • Convert PAL DVD to NTSC?

Hi. I recently got an imac G5 and tried playing my 1st DVD. The message came up saying that I have to choose a region code and will only be able to set the region code 5 times before its permanently set. I find this very inconvienent as I have some of both NTSC (region 1) and PAL (region 2) DVDs that I would like to be able to play on my Mac. As a worksround....I'm wondering if its possible for me to convert my PAL DVDs to NTSC using imovie and perhaps some other software.......perhaps importing the info on the PAL DVD into imovie ......and burning a NTSC (region 1) copy? If possible .....how would I go about doing this? Thanks.

I have my computer set to read region 2 DVD . Is this a problem when trying to convert a DVD to region free or 1?
When I run MTR, I get 2 folders, Audio_TS (which is empty) and VIDEO_TS.
    VIDEO_TS has many files, example; VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TSIFO, VIDEO_VOB, VTS010.BUP, VTS010.IFO, VTS010.VOB....... etc.
When I open JES 2.7.6 to convert from PAL > NTSC... the JES input pane doesn't see the files (they won't hi-lite, double click or anything) (could it be because I have my computer set to read region 2?)
Toast see the MTR files. If I try importing those same MTR files or the DVD files to Toast 6>video tab, I get "files are in a unsupported format and cannot be imported"
If I try and simply take the Pal DVD and "Toast it" from the desktop, I get "Disk could not be mounted. All open files and programs on this volume must be closed first"
When I tried DVDxDV>OTMovie, the playback was jittery on any thing that was moving with-in the picture frame. completely un-watchable. (well maybe with the right drugs....)
I looked at both links send by Matti (btw thank you very much) but I am a novice and don't understand all of the technical jargon....
All I'm trying to do is get a DVD that will play on my stand alone DVD/TV....

  • Creating a PAL DVD  from NTSC Video camcorder

Can the latest version of iMovie create a PAL DVD from NTSC Video camcorder? What are best practices and workflow to create a PAL DVD from NTSC sources.

iMovie doesn't create DVDs, iDVD does..
in iM's prefs, set Video to 30fps = NTSC
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
in iDVD's prefs, set Video to 25fps = PAL
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
when finished with editing in iM, Share to Mediabrowser
in iDVD, select a theme, grab movies from Mediabrowser
burned DVD will be PAL ..

  • HDV PAL to HDV NTSC to DVD, best conversion method?

I'm cutting a feature doc shot in HDV PAL. What would you recommend the most efficient way to turn out an HDV NTSC master (to produce a DVD) for the North American market?
I'm far from any post production house, in the wilds of New Zealand. Ideally I want to be able to do the conversions using the FCP Studio setup ... but need to be able to promise my producers that the end result will be top quality. Is this a Nattress question? Like, for instance, does a Nattress conversion give the same quality result as a hardware conversion, tape to tape?
I'm thinking that if I can make a straight FCP\Nattress? conversion and end up with TWO HDV masters, PAL and NTSC. And then take each HDV master and produce two separate MPEG2's for the two DVD masters, using Compressor and DVD Pro ... then that might be the easiest way to go.
If there is a better (even though more expensive way to go, other than a $900 an hour pp studio in L.A.), I want to be able to suggest that to the producers also. Let them choose...
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Hi Ben,
Why do you try to conform to 24 fps if you want to convert PAL (25fps) to NTSC (30fps) ?
You also doesn't need to de-interlaced video, do you? What for ?
Is it for a theatre release or a television ?
Maybe I didn't understand your problem...
I've never done it but I would suggest to try to conform your quicktime file like that in Cinema Tools:
    Open file
    Conform
    29,97
    or
    30
I think one is for frop frame and the other one is for non-drop but I don't know which one, I am not familiar with NTSC either.
If it's for television you should choose drop frame I think to have the right lenght.
There is also Reverse Telecine that you can use for NTSC but overall, I would suggest that you take a deep look into Cinema Tools help/manual because it's really well done and I'm quite sure you'll fine all your answers in it.
    Regards,
    Marie

    Yes.
Use a PAL camera to import the PAL tape.
Use JES Deinterlacer to convert to NTSC.
Create a new NTSC iMovie project.
    Import the converted movie.
Export to NTSC tape using an NTSC camera.

  • Convert HDV PAL 1080i50 to NTSC HD 1080i

Has anyone ever successfully converted HDV PAL 1080i50 to NTSC HD 1080i. we keep running into problems with cinema tools. Both the preferences in the file menu and button marked "conform" in the open clip dialogue are GRAYED OUT!! Please help...
We've also tried using MPEG Streamclip 1.9 to conform our footage with meager results. Basically we always end up with jumpy footage.
Also if no one knows how to do this, what about converting 1080i50 to 1080i/p 23.98/24?? Is this possible? Can it have smooth playback?

I've done it in a different way.... I've used FCP Media Manager to recompress the HDV footage to DVCPRO HD, then it works in Cinema Tools, although I've gotten glitches in the video for some reason on occasion. Inotherwords, the orginal PAL DVCPRO HD file is perfect. Then when I conform it in Cinema Tools to 23.98 (which takes about a second), it's now a perfect NTSC file with the exception that at around 5 mins. in, there's a five frame glitch, which I have no way to explain except that there's a glitch in the software which causes that...

  • Does DVDSPro able to convert PAL clip to NTSC by itself ?

I am in PAL country. I wan't to make an NTSC DVD from a PAL clip.
Do I really need to convert this clip to NTSC before I put it in DVD Studio Pro ? Why ? DVD Studio Pro isn't able to do it by itself ?
iDVD apparently can (it's written in the manual)
    thanks

    Of course !
DVDSP is not a encoding/conversion tool.
Yes, DVDSP is not Compressor. But, when you want to burn your DVD, it encodes mpeg2 files, doesn't he ? Thus, DVDSP can encode files with the help of Quicktime in the background. So if I make it your way, in some ways I use Quicktime twice in a row. Is it really the best way to do ?
You cannot even import PAL assets in NTSC project.
Did you try it ? I am making it at this moment, and it's works.
In all the discussions, people say "first you have to convert your files to NTSC" and "you can even import PAL files in a NTSC project"
Please help me. I don't understand.
