PAL video looks stretched out in HD project?

I imported some PAL video, which is 720 x 576 pixels.
I am putting this onto a project set to 1920 x 1080.
When I put it on the timeline, it becomes stretched out, so the faces look weirdly disproportioned.
This seems to happen whether or not I check 'match sequence settings' when I drop it into the timeline.
Is there an effect or filter I can apply to this video to make the video not look stretched? I don't care if it has to be letterboxed or black-barred on the side.
Thanks,
AM

  • Jpeg attachments looking stretched out in mail

As of yesterday, when I attach a jpeg of some artwork, the artwork's dimensions look stretched out and out of proportion. Never had the problem before, but I can't seem to fix it. I've thrown out preferences, repaired permissions and zapped PRAM. Started happening after Quicktime update. Any ideas?

I have the answer to my own question. Pixel Aspect Ratio. I always use D1 for my video work and apparently Mail only likes Square pixels. I did more experimenting after asking the question. I guess I never used D1 ratio until I upgraded my Photoshop from 6.0. Hmmmmm.

  • 16:9 video, but looks stretched  vertically

I am making a dvd in dvdstudio pro. My movie clips are edited in iMovie (16:9) and my menus are made in Photoshop with a preset (16:9).
The problem is, when i burn the dvd and put it into my dvd player that is hooked up to my tv, the picture fills up the whole screen and the menus and video looks stretched vertically. It doesn't look like 16:9. And there are no black horizontal "free areas" either as there usually is when it is 16:9. I have chosen my menus and video to be 16:9 in dvd studio pro. When i press simulate though, it first appears in 4:3, and when i change it to 16:9 it looks like it should.
What am i doing wrong? I want it to look better on my tv!

I have set all tracks and menus to 16:9 letterbox in the inspector.
When I play hollywood movies I see letterboxing on both a widescreen tv and a 4:3 tv.
When I built my DVD to my harddrive and opened it in Apples DVD player, it looks rectangle, but the height of the rectangle seemed to be too high. I have a 22" widescreen tft-monitor and the black horizontal stripes from the letterboxing are only about an inch tall in fullscreen. If i play a hollywood movie, the "black stripes" are much bigger, about twice as big. This is what I want my movie to look like.
I have checked the dvd-player and TVs settings but there seemed to be nothing wrong. I mean, the hollywood movies look great. Why doesn't mine?
How do I get my DVD to have these black stripes from the letterboxing effect?
Heres a picture on my 22" widescreen.

  • Video appears stretched.

I've burned several copies using both the 4X3 and 16x9 format and all the videos look fine when played on my computer, but once I put them into my portable dvd player (which I will be hooking up to an LCD projector, at my daughter's wedding reception) or play on our widescreen tv., the bride and groom each look stretched out and as though they've gained 20 pounds. I edited the video using both iMovie HD and iMovie 09, which I then sent into FCE and exported back into IM/HD. Using im09 was the only way I could figure out how to do some closeups of each of them.
I even tried exporting out to tape and then re-importing. But still no luck. They're STRETCHED.
Could the problem be my player or our widescreen t.v?
Thanks for you help, I don't have much time before their big day.

    Yes.
You didn't post enough specifics but I know that widescreen TV's have several different settings for aspect ratio because some channels still broadcast in 4:3 and people don't want to see the left/right black bars... in that case, it stretches horizontally to fit.
Also, DVD players have similar settings for 4:3 with and without black bars as well as a 16:9 setting.
Not knowing your situation, try to find those settings on your TV & DVD player and figure out the combination that works.

  • Display is stretched out

I had my computer plugged into a projector earlier and when I've done this before the screen stretches out while plugged into the projector. However it won't go back to it's normal size now after being unplugged and I tried turning it off. Please help!

Go back to System Preferences/Displays and make sure that you're using 1280 x 800 resolution. Next, explain what looks stretched out. Is it your desktop picture, your open ap window, ?
If it's your open ap window, just resize it by grabbing the lower right corner and dragging it to size. If you can't get to the corner, drag the top of the window to the left until you can.

  • 2 Out Of 9 Short FCE Videos Mysteriously Stretched In iDVD.

I posted this in the iDVD forum yesterday but have received no response and it now appears it could equally be an FCE problem.
Yesterday I made 9 short slideshow videos in Final Cut Express, exported them as QuickTime Movies (NOT self-contained) and dragged them into a 4:3 PAL iDVD project. (The pictures were hi-res JPEG scans of 35mm slides so have an aspect ratio of 3:2 and appear letterboxed in the 4:3 sequences in FCE).
On playing the project in iDVD, 2 of the 9 videos were stretched and had the statement "Widescreen Preview" in green.
Yet all the videos were created identically.
Thinking it was maybe an FCE problem I checked all the project/sequence data in FCE and it was all OK. They also played back normally in both FCE and QT Player.
Can anyone suggest how this has happened?
This morning I trashed both FCE’s and iDVD’s preferences to no avail.
I have also re-exported the videos as self-contained QT Movies but still no luck.
One other, more sinister “problem”, is that last night I let the cursor hover over the iDVD playback button and the iDVD monitor suddenly started giving a fantastic display of brightly coloured geometrical shapes ...... mostly triangles, I think.
Then when I switched back to FCE there was a strange interface break-up just under and around the cursor looking like lots of small black squares or mosaics. I switched both apps off immediately and went to bed!
    A failing video card?
So far this morning, after trashing preferences, repairing permissions and disconnecting the power cable for several minutes, both programs appear to be OK, but I am expecting the worst!

Hi Ian, try looking over these two threads:
The short and seemingly useful one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8995428
The long and somewhat unhelpful one:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1475310&start=0&tstart=0
The key in the first one seems to be re-saving the movie as a self-contained movie using QT Pro. I wonder if the same thing would work if you exported as a self-contained QT movie from FCE?
The second one toys around with the AIFF audio being the problem, and suggests a workaround using a program called Inverse-Anamorphicizer. I'm not sure if I believe the conclusion about the audio these people came up with...
You might try the QT Pro approach first and see if that fixes it, especially because the second thread is quite long.
Also, take a look over this MacFixIt link:

Apparently you are not the only one with this problem!

  • Video looks great on MBP, horrible when projected....

I am projecting a video that I created in FinalCut on the MBP onto a screen using a Dell 1610X projector Check it out at http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/HomeTheaterProjectors/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=224-7541
During my tests, I noticed that the video looks great on the MBP but really dark when projected.
I don't want to re-color the video to make it work on the projector... any thoughts, hints, insight you can provide?
    Thanks in advance.

You are comparing two different things and expecting them to be equal. That won't work.
The computer monitor emits light, the projection screen reflects light.
The reflectivity of the projection screen plays an important role. A white painted wall will not look the same as a proper screen with a silver or glass bead coating such as those used in movie theaters.
Ambient light from the auditorium or leaking through the drapes will dilute the contrast on the screen.
How are you connecting to the projector? The model you linked has VGA and HDMI inputs. VGA does not have the ability to display the range of color and contrast that your computer does. HDMI might improve things somewhat.
I don't want to re-color the video to make it work on the projector...
Then you have to block as much of the ambient light sources as possible and get a decent screen.

  • Importing iphone 4 video to imovie looks stretched/distorted

I imported my iphone 4 video movie to iphoto. I then saved it to my desktop. I then imported from the desktop to imovie. However, when i play it from imovie it looks all stretched out (horizontally). When i play the video from iphoto or from my desktop, it appears fine using the default quicktime. Can someone help me?

I also struggled with the same problem for a week (even though my files were .mov already). I found this steps helpful: opening the video clip in quicktime first, then Export it to a certain folder (desktop would be the easiest) using a 720p format (found on the dropdown menu under the "Save As" or "File Name" bar) and then import the video to imovie. This time, the video should not be stretched anymore.
    Hope this helps!

  • Video and audio out of synch on burned DVD.  DVD project appears to be fine.  I'm using 1X speed to burn disc.  Project info indicates plenty of space.  What should I do?

Video and audio are out of synch on some chapters of a burned double layer DVD.  The iDVD (7.1.2) project seems to be fine.  I'm burning the DVD using a 1X speed.  What else can I do to solve this problem.  Based on the project information, I have plenty of space relative to the DVD capacity.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Rendered video looks differnt than project video   black bars in the man viewing area?

rendered video looks differnt than project video   black bars in the man viewing area?

When you say "rendered," do you mean hitting the Enter/Return key to produce Rendered files, for smoothest playback, or do you mean once you Export/Share/Publish the Timeline to an output file, the black bars show up?
What version of PrE are you using?
Also, can you give us information on the Video Clips in your Project, such as the camcorder that they came from, the CODEC used, and their Frame Size?
Next, what Project Preset did you choose at New Project?
If you did mean after you have output the Timeline to a file, what were the specs. that you chose for that output file?
Black bars in the output file, or on the Timeline, indicate a mis-match somewhere in the process.

  • How to make a good quality 8 Giga DVD out of a Project in AVI of 14 Gigas?I have a film in a proyect

How to make a good quality 8 Giga DVD out of a Project in AVI of 14 Gigas?
I have a film in a proyect made with a miniDV camera in my old Premiere 6.5
It has 68 minutes and after exporting it with the Microsoft DV AVI compressor in 100 % quality and not compressing the audio, it  ended in an AVI of 14 Gigas.
I would like to obtain a DVD of the best quality in audio and video possible. How can I do it?  SHOULD I EXPORT IT FROM THE PREMIERE 6.5 WITH ANOTHER COMPRESSOR OR IN LESS THAN 100% QUALITY WITH THE SAME DV AVI COMPRESSOR ? my INTENTION IS TO USE THE NERO VISION AFTERWARDS... I HAVE THE NERO VISION 4...-. FROM 2007- WOULD IT BE OK OR IS THERE A BETTER ONE? - I know there are newer ones...but better?
I HAVE POSTED THIS A FEW DAYS AGO. THANKS TO THE PEOPLE THAT REPIED. BUT I THINK MY QUESTION IS NOTFULLY ANSWERED YET.
i NEED THE BEST QUALITY I CAN GET, EVEN WHITH MY PREMIERE 6.5, BECAUSE IT IS A FEATURE FILM THAT TOOK ME SEVERAL YEARS AND THIS LAST REMAKE IS NOW READY AFTER TOO MUCH WORK.
    THANKS A LOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Thanks for your replys and sorry for being so fussy about this.
I have now seen that one of the options for exporting from Premiere 6.5 is Adobe MPEG encoder. So Do you guys think it would be a good idea to do it with that, Or Would it be better AVI or DV AVI compressor from Premiere before making the DVD?
I have the Nero Vision 4.9.6.6  But I may be able to look for another one if you think it is better...
Thanks a lot for your advises...

  • 2010 Mac Mini OS 10.10.1 screen is stretched out

    Hi,
I have a 2010 Mac Mini that I use at work and I also use a second monitor via an adapter through USB. The setup worked until I installed Yosemite (10.10.1) on Friday.
When I go to Settings / Displays I don't get all the resolution options I had before (for my main monitor, 20", res. 1680 x 1050) and my secondary monitor isn't recognized at all (as if it wasn't even connected).
This is my main monitor: http://www.pcworld.com/product/1417007/lg-l203wt-widescreen-lcd-monitor.html
I've tried resetting the PRAM but that didn't work. I'm a designer and I can't work with my screen stretched out.
Can anyone let me know if there is a way to fix this???
    Thanks in advance!

Look for update software for the USB video adopter.
The 2010 mini has an HDMI video adopter and came with a HDMI to DVI adopter, It also has a mini displayport video output. You can get an adopter to connect HDMI, DVI and VGA,
Mini DisplayPort with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution
DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (included)
VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
Support for extended desktop and video mirroring across both ports

  • Why does my Gopro black 3+ video look so bad on PRE11 while editing & after DVD creation playback.

Well let start with.  When I do a project with video from my Samsung S4 phone or my IPhone 5 or my Canon T4i  looks great on computer screen and when I play back a burned DVD or AVHCD.  I just directly import from file on my hard drive.  My Samsung is at 1920x1040 30fps mp4 .  I believe the IPhone is a 1920x1080 MOV format.
It is the GoPro video that  PRE11 has a problem with.  I record at 1920x1080 30fps.  Nothing special.
First the computer screen.  On both of my computers when I right click on the playback screen.
Quality Highest; Magnification Fit; Safe Margin unchecked; Playback External device None; Aspect Hardware; Desktop Audio; 24Progresive Conversion Interlaced 2332; Export External Device DV 29.97 720; Checked Disable video output.
As for Publish.  DVD I use preset NTSC widescreen dvd; AVCHD h264 1920x1080I ntsc.
Any other ideas why the GoPro video looks bad on computer screen & on dvd on hd tv.
Some say you first must convert GoPro mp4 to AVI then import.  That seems crazy.  Why can Samsung mp4 work great and GoPro mp4 not.
It seems that Adobe has not correctly written code for MP4 from on of the largest camcorder producers.

Thank you for starting your own new thread on your Premiere Elements workflow after initially posting in the thread of another.
Adobe Premiere Elements 13 Latest Developments
For your convenience, this is a copy of my reply to you in that thread which was left unanswered

Thank you for the reply. What I was looking for mostly are the properties of the 1920 x 1080p30 GoPro3+ Black footage that you are trying to use in
Premiere Elements 11. Are you working with the H.264.mp4 format or are you working with a Cineform.avi format? If it is the H.264.mp4 format, I am not seeing why you should be doing anything else but importing the H.264.mp4 into Premiere Elements 11 using the project preset set by you manually or the project automatically. Best you set the project preset manually to assure the correct project preset in this case.

    DSLR 1080p30@ 29.97
There are times when the project does not interpret correctly the properties of the video when it is the first file dragged to the Timeline. When it does not do it correctly, it does not give you the closest possible fit between project preset and properties of source media, instead it gives you its default 1080i which is not appropriate for your 1080p footage.

To get a better perspective on your comparison between your cell phone and GoPro results....are you saying that you can take the videos from the cell phones and import them into Premiere Elements 11 without issue, audio out of sync or other? Are you converting the cell phone video at any time - to change a variable to constant frame size or other?
Depending on your details, I would offer to look at a sample of your specific H.264.mp4 file for which you cannot get a decent DVD-VIDEO on DVD or AVCHD format on DVD disc. If you opt to do this, you might consider sending the sample via a Dropbox link posted in this thread. I am concerned that your GoPro issue on Premiere Elements 11 is going to get lost in this thread on a different topic. If we do not gain ground on the issue soon, please consider starting a new thread on your issue so that the details and especially the results will be found more easily by those users seeking answers for the type of problem that you describe.
The answers will be in the details.
    Thanks for the follow ups.

  • Exporting .mov file stretching out photos

I exported an h.264 mov file (from FCP06 sequence) of a wedding video that included still photos from the photographers and video from the video camera shot 4:3. The timeline looked fine but after using compressor to make the mov file, the photos appear stretched out. I guess this is a pixel thing. When I burn it to a DVD will it somehow fix itself? How should I import the photos into the timeline so that they will export at 4:3 looking correctly proportioned?

I am able to export one as a mpeg-4, but when I open the 2nd file, the export option is greyed out and I'm not able to export at all.
Not sure if you are outputting file directly from iPhoto or trying to convert an iPhoto shlideshow in QT at this point. If the former, then this would normally happen only when some other action is pending -- e.g., a modal box is already open. If the latter, then I have no idea and would likely need to see the source file causing problems.
The second file is larger than the first, but I'm not aware of any size restrictions. Are there?
Also don't believe current system has any such restrictions. Have personally worked with movies as long as 300 minutes and/or dozens of GBs in source length.
If not, what else should I be doing (I'm currently regenerating the 2nd .mov file to make sure that it wasn't corrupted, but it does play fine in Qtime).
Sounds like a good plan of action. If the same problem crops up, try creating a slide show using a sub-set of the photos. If problem continues and you are using a 2-stage (iPhoto to QT) process, try to post the sub-set to Internet so it can be evaluated.

  • I can't get Garageband 11 to stretch out a note using Flex Time

    Hey all
I've recorded with a real guitar using a USB adapter and I can move a note thats in the wrong position OK but I cant stretch out a note to make it longer using Flex Time.
Its the last note of the song. It just always seems to split the note and move it as opposed to drag/lengthen it out.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

I have had the same problem too.   Also recorded from a USB guitar interface, but not sure if that is relevant at this point.   I have tried a few things to see if I could isolate the cause.   Sometimes single shot recordings work right away, sometimes they don't.   Somtimes combining clips cause Flextime to stop working.  I have completely rebuit a project.  Selected individual clips to play solo and exported the result.   Took that output and placed it back into a new song and was able to stretch it for the most part.  Which led me to believe that it was clip corruption causing the problem.   However, while working to get some usable audio clips for a guitar solo, the flextime problems with garageband are starting to make it unusable.  Right now I have two clips side by side in the song.   I can stretch the timing anywhere in either of the clips.   But if I join the clips, flextime no longer works in the joined region.   It will only split the notes apart.   So if either of those clips were corrupted, flextime would not work in one of them.
I have found ways to get flextime working  normally again, sometimes taking up to an hour.  Then five minutes later it breaks again.  I'm getting really tired of having to recreate my songs to get flextime working again.   It would be nice if someone would look into this problem sometime before the year is out.
