Pale strip running down macbook screen

I noticed earlier today a pale strip running from top to bottom on my macbook screen - as if a sheet of tracing paper had been placed over the screen. Assuming it to be a software issue (recently moved to 10.5.8), I rebooted, only the find the strip appear immediately at start-up, and much stronger than before. Here's an photo:

I'm a little concerned this might be a hardware problem, caused possibly by the screen hinge (the left-hand side of the strip coincides exactly with the beginning of the left-hand edge of the hinge). Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Mark Hobbs

I agree that it's a hardware issue. You could try running the Apple Hardware test (inserting install disc 1 and holding down the D key), but if it shows up at startup as well, I'm fairly certain you're looking at damaged hardware that needs to be repaired.

Having an intermittent issue where my iMac blanks out on me. On restarting I get several bands running down the screen with pixels jumping around within the bands, then the white screen of death and nothing... This happens intermittently and usually restarts OK. Happened again three days ago and wouldn't restart for two days (again the bands/pixels etc) but now operating fine? Any ideas whats wrong with my iMac and what the solution may be? Also gets very hot from time to time, particularly if I'm playing music/watching youtube/movies for extended periods. Mac is 3.5 years old, running OS X 10.6.8, processor 3.4 GHz i7 memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

  • HP 5button comfort mouse-wired. mouse pointer runs down the screen by itself.

Hi all, I have recently lost control of my mouse. The pointer runs down the screen and I am unable to click accurately on
any buttons etc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled without success. My system is Win 7- 64 bit. I have been told this is a driver problem. If so, how do I fix it? Incidently the mouse works perfectly on my Vista laptop and my XP desktop so the
mouse is not at fault. Any help will be gratefully received.  RegT

  • Squiggly line running down my screen

I've just noticed a random squiggly line* running down the screen on the bottom half center of my iMac (Intel Core i5 27 inch) screen. I don't believe I'd noticed it before, had this iMac for a few months now. It's very light, more noticeable when the screen happens to be dark but it's definitely there. It's not ON the screen, almost seems like its pressed between two plates if the screen were made of two plates. Tried different screen savers and desktops, it's most definetely there. Haven't had this iMac 6 months, am I still under warranty? And what with the squiggly line??? Anyone? Thank You! MG
*imagine a particularly intoxicated snail traveling from point-a to point-b and the line it would leave behind. THATS what it looks like. And no, a nail hasn't been anywhere near my iMac

"Squiggly line"? Only an Apple Tech can tell you. You have a one-year warranty. If you bought Apple Care, you have longer coverage. In any event, call Apple, tell them what you see, and when you bought the computer. It's really a matter for them to resolve.

  • Vertical black line running down imac screen

This morning i noticed for the first time (wasn't there yesterday) a thin black vertical line running down my 21' imac screen.
    Any suggestions?

Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see 2 black lines it a Video card/VRAM problem, if the line does not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.

  • Thin black line running down the screen

Just did latest update and noticed on the reboot a thin black line running down the left hand side of the screen 8cm in apex.

Sounds like a problem with the display. Contact your local Apple Store or AASP and make an appointment to have the display looked at. > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

There is a thin blue line running vertically down my imac screen a little to the right of the centre. It disappeared for a while - i think after I tapped a certain key - but then re-appeared and will not go away. What is it? How do I get rid of it? Mark

  • My ipod touch 4g has colorul stripes going down the screen and its not working

i need help i was on facebook while i got these coloful stripes on my ipod and now its not working

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • First day... Lines running down the screen.

    Sigh.
So I get my BRAND NEW, 2.0 GHz Black Macbook today, and I'm wondering if something is wrong with it.
In looking at my screen, it appears that there are lines panning downwards, like it is progressive scanning. (They're a lighter color, and don't appear to be normal)
The lines are horizontal, and run from top to bottom and at the right angle it's obvious that it is going on.
Just wondering if I should take this in and it is repairable, or if others have experienced this problem or what...
    Man this *****.

If you have a new machine (within 14 days) and you're having a problem, you should be able to have Apple replace it for you. I have heard of other people experiencing similar problems (albeit only a few)... but if you feel your machine is clearly behaving in a way it should not, there is no reason not to bring it back to Apple and have it replaced.

  • Black bar running down my screen

Just today the below started happening on my screen:
For absolutely no reason, it was just being used as normal and when I moved slightly it just flickered to this and wont go. The worst thing is my AppleCare ran out about 2 weeks ago , I have an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow but can anyone shed any light on this in the meantime and any hints on how to approach the Genius' etc.?
    Thanks in advance
    Lindsey

First I'd like to say that there are places that charge a lot less than $300.00 to fix that. You can find some of them on Ebay. I saw one for screen replacement that was  about $130.00.  The easiest way to test that is to have an external monitor to plug in. The macbook has a mini dvi port on the side. So you need a monitor with a mini dvi plug or an adapter from vga to mini dvi. If it's the screen or as I suspect the backlight, with an external monitor you will not have the lines.

  • My iPad has stripes running through the middle of screen, is it done?

Is my iPad finished, it has stripes running through the screen?

Have you tried a reset? Hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)
If the stripes return, try giving it a couple of careful whacks across the back - some folks here have reported success doing this, but you try it at your own risk.

  • Suddenly experiencing lines running across and or down the screen

Starting a few days ago, I started to notice a line running across my screen, when I am on safari. Sometimes the line runs down the screen. It kind of flashes really quickly and then disappear. I have never noticed it before until a few days ago. It usually happens when I am reading an article or looking through blogs.
The line appears to be a thin gray line and it run across the entire screen.
Anyone know what it is and why might it be doing this? Is this normal?

No, the problem does not happen often enough that I can depend on it showinhpg up. It randomly happens. I have noticed it usually happens when a page is loading...
The page will load and about half way through, a gray line will quickly flash across or down the screen. Sometimes it also happens when I am pinching to zoom in, zoom out on the screen.
Is this normal? if I can not show the apple store genus, do you think they still can try to troubleshoot the problem?
