Palm 4.2.1 Desktop to iCal (OSX 10.5.1)

I recently updated to the latest Mac OS and am now running into lots of compatibility issues. I decided it's time to convert to iCal, partly because of the upgrade and also because I'm thinking of buying an iPhone. I'm finding it's not an easy conversion.
DateBook: Palm allows you to export to a vCal file, but all categories come in the same color, so all organization of client and activities by color goes out the window. It's my limited understanding of iCal that separate calendars need to be created to get this categorization.
ToDos: Palm only allows tab-delimited exportation. What do you do with that jumbled mass when coming into iCal. No way to import (that I can see) this format.
Memos: I have 8 years worth of value info in here all categorized. How do I go about getting this (again, tab-delimited) format into iCal (or Notes?).
Really starting to regret the upgrade. Does anyone who has gone through this have any valuable tips? Thanks!

If you intend to continue using a Palm device, there is only really one solution: use the Missing Sync for Palm OS.
Palm device synchronization is partially broken in Mac OS X 10.5 and later. The Missing Sync also includes a conduit and Mac OS X application compatible with the Palm memo application on your device, as well as many other features. And, there is no need to struggle with export and import of your historical data - simply install the Missing Sync for Palm OS following the instructions in the User Guide, and synchronize.
It's really that simple.

  • How do I easily transfer data from Palm Desktop to iCal and Address Book?

    Hello,
How do I easily transfer data from Palm Desktop to iCal and Address Book?
I have a Palm Tungsten E handheld which just died.
Luckily, all my data is backed-up on my Palm Desktop V4.2.1.
I just bought an iPod-Touch, so I would like to easily transfer
all my data (Addressbook, Calendar, etc) from the Palm Desktop
on my Mac (OSX 10.5) to the equivalent Mac applications
(Address Book, iCal) which will then allow me to view and update
    them on my iPod-Touch.
How do I easily transfer data from Palm Desktop to iCal and Address Book?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    David

Hi David. The contact information is straightforward. Bring up your Address List in Palm Desktop, then select Export under file. You pick vCard as the format, and save the resulting file where ever. In Address Book, you then select Import --> vCards under file. You may need to edit things like birthdays by hand afterwards.
I am still working on the Calendar information.

  • My palm calendar wont open after Lion download.  Palm is so much better than ical,  is it not going to work w/ Lion?

Palm calendar won't open now that I've downloaded Lion. Palm is so much better than ical.  Is there a fix?

I miss Palm Desktop for Mac. The integration of contacts, to-dos, notes, appointments, etc. was great. I stopped using it about a year ago when I finally sold my Palm Tungsten T and purchased and iPhone 4. iCal etc. work fine for me, but they're not as good as Palm Desktop was.
I also miss Graffiti 1 handwriting recognition. I could write with it as fast and flawlessly as I can write longhand on paper, and nearly as fast as I can type. It was the best for meetings and interviews, since I could write without having to look at the screen. iOS has nothing that comes close; I've gotten used to the onscreen keyboard but it's slower, I make far more mistakes, and I have to keep my eye on the screen while typing.
As others have pointed out, Palm Desktop was written for PPC processors. Lion does not include and cannot run Rosetta, which is the emulation environment which allowed Intel processors to run PPC code. So Palm Desktop will not run on a Mac running Lion.
I was syncing to my Palm Tungsten T under Snow Leopard (and using Palm Desktop) with no troubles at all. There are third-party sync options available, but they're all kludgy and unreliable compared to Palm's own syncing. Again, though, the Palm software for syncing was written for PPC processors and so won't run on any Mac booting into Lion.

  • Will a Palm Centro or Blackberry sync with iCal?

Will a Palm Centro or Blackberry sync with iCal?

    Greetings,
Yes on both but you would need software to do the sync for you.
If you are running Mac OS X 10.6.x, Palm is no longer updating their sync software (http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/na/centro/centro/unlocked/solutions/article/332 19_en.html).  You would need a sync solution like: http://www.markspace.com/
Blackberry has their own sync software which you can get from them.
    Cheers!

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Why can't I sync my Palm Desktop with iCal?

When I enable iSync for my Palm (Tungsten E2, Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev.D) it disables the conduits I need to sync my Palm Desktop calendar information (Date Book, Tasks, To Do, etc.) with anything else. So when I make a change on Palm Desktop it doesn't even show up on the Palm handheld, much less on iCal. Can I move these "iSync Disabled Conduits" (Date Book, Tasks, To Do, etc.) back into the "Conduits" folder without creating a conflict? I've tried various solutions on the Mac Support site without much luck so far. Does this problem have something to do with OS 10.4's unique issues with syncing? Or is iCal supposed to REPLACE Palm Desktop, not be synced with it?

    Hello kongoscar,
If you are making the jump from Windows to Mac, it might be easier for you to export your data from the Windows side using a comma separated values (.csv) file and importing that data into the PIM application on the Mac.  The Palm Desktop software for the Mac, is, in my opinion, terrible (and I'm a Mac user).
    Alan G
Thanks so much for your reply, Alan G. I am not planning on using the Palm Desktop for the Mac once I get all the data from my Palm into the Macs. I am going to use the Mac software, like iCal and contacts, and probably Bento3 in place of the Palm Memos database, and I HOPE (not sure whether I will like it or not) to use my iPhone in place of the Palm, but I am not yet ready to ditch the Palm until I satisfy myself that the iPhone can do all the calendar and personal database functions as well as what I am used to with the Palm. So this data transfer quandary is not really about transferring the data to the Mac so I can continue to use my Palm and Palm Desktop software as I always have - it is about getting it to the Mac in a way that I can easily then export/import the data into iCal, Address Book/Contacts, and Notes or Bento3. My assumption is that would be easier doing imports from Palm Desktop on the Mac rather than imports from the PC, but maybe that is wrong. For instance, if I do an export from the PC of the Palm's calendar function  and import that into iCal on the iMac, will all the alarms and repeating copies of entries also make it over? Or would the alarms and repeaters more likely make it into an import into iCal if it came from data that was already on the Mac in Palm Desktop for the Mac? It odes seem that the Palm software for the Mac is not as good as it is for the PC, that Mac OSX does not support the Palm as well as earlier versions of Mac OS, and that there are all these problems with syncing on the Mac, from what I've read on the forums.
Given my admittedly rambling description above, do you have any other advice for me?

  • Palm desktop to ical to iphone

call me clueless, but i cannot figure out how to export my calendar (or my contacts) to an apple application that can then up synched with the iPhone. when i choose export in palm, neither iCal nor address book show up as an option.

For the contacts what I did was to export to my desktop from the Palm (T|X, and In Palm desktop for Mac 4.2.2) using the Address option for Module and the vCard option in Format.
For my date book (in monthly) I exported to my desktop in vCal.
Then I imported the contacts to my address book on my iMac as group labeled "contacts." These I them copied to my iPhone during the sync process.
For the date book I imported them directly to my iCal on my desktop and them synched them with my iPhone.
    Hope this helps.

  • Palm Desktop to iCal

Recently got my iPhone4, so now can integrate all my apple apps, etc. To date have been using Palm Desktop 4.2.1 for calendar (covers many years). I'm happy to leave old data on this program as a sort of archive. But need to transfer current and future calendar data to iCal and thence to iPhone. Is there an app, or work around, that would accomplish this?
    Mike

Sorry I haven't used Palm Desktop for quite some time. If you do a Wikipedia search for ".ICS" you can read more about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.ics
To export Calendar and Addressbook data out of the Palm Desktop software:
    Open Palm Desktop
    Open the Palm calendar
File > Export > Format vCal
    Open Palm Addressbook
    File > Export > Format > vCard
Export the files to your desktop for ease of access.
Once there you can import them into iCal and Addressbook respectively by going to File > Import.
    Hope that helps.

  • Switching from Palm desktop to ical

i have been using Palm for my calendar and Entourage for my email and address book. i would like to purchase the iphone, but need to change over to mail and ical. what would be the easiest way to do that?

If you choose to switch synchronization from the Palm DT to Outlook on your PC, Hotsync will simply sync all the PIM data (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and notes) on you Treo 680 to Outlook. The remaining items will still sync with the Palm DT such as install, media, phone logs, and your installed application backups.

  • Remote Desktop Problems from OSX

We are using RDS (Server2008R2) to publish RemoteApps and this works really well in Windows 7 & 8 clients and also using the Microsoft Remote Desktop App for iOS. This also used to work well in OSX, but since we changed our domain name the version running
in OSX no longer operates, although all Windows and iOS devices connect perfectly.
The error message is a rather less than helpful "Failed to load Remote Resources at
https://xxxxxxxx.com/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspxen-US/Default.aspx, error: Connection closed (2)" The last part of this string (en-US/Default.aspx) appears to have been added by the
App as the string entered ends ...webfeed.aspx. This webfeed URL works perfectly well apart from any of our Macs and also works from IE to use WebApps.
Looking in the logs the domain name resolves to the correct IP address for the Gateway server but does not seem to get as far as trying to log in. I have chased around in circles for ages with this and I am convinced something went astray when our domain
name change was implemented. We are now using a wildcard GoDaddy certificate to authenticate the domain.

    Hi Jeremy,
Not a great deal in the logs. I have removed the App and re-installed it 3 times today and each time I have run the App it seems to be picking up settings from the previous install. I have tried searching the MacBook for remnants of the App but
nothing shows in the search for RDClient or anything with rd in the filename. Logs show load of attempts going back to last week where we have been working on this so there must be remnants in there somewhere. I have cut the log file down to just the entries
from today as below, but it doesn't really tell us much at all. The same URL and user account work perfectly in iOS and Windows.

  • View Palm files on iMac desktop

How can I view and edit Palm tungsten E files on my iMac desktop?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E

I'm assuming when you say "iMac desktop" you are referring to Palm Desktop software, correct?  I'm not a Mac user, so I'm afraid I'm at a bit of a loss here...
DTG uses a separate program on the computer to view the files that are being synced.  You may need to run the T|E installation disk again to install the computer client, and to reinstall DTG on your T|E.
The other questions sound like normal capabilities for Palm Desktop.  Not sure what problems you're having.  I just did a search of this section of the forum for "iMac".  Many hits came up that might help you.

  • ICal OSX 10.8 US Holidays

Received this error notice 'There was an unexpected error with the request on subscribed calendars (error -1). " when I was trying to get US Holidays added to my calendar.  Same thing happen when I tried to download a new file for my MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8 (Mt Lion)
1st I have no idea what error-1 means or what to to clear it.
My iMac is only able to run OSX 10.7 (Lion) I suspose thying to sync the 2 computer could cause problems.  But both are using iCloud.  Need a little help

You will find that the calendar's URL bevins with ical.mac.com. The mac.com domain was one of MobileMe's website hosting domains, and with the closure of MobileMe none of its hosting works, including the CalDAV server which was used by a number of subscription calendars - mostly third-party but also some Apple ones: you would think, wouldn't you, that at least Apple would be aware of this. In fact a few days ago, following a similar query, I went through about twenty randomly chosen calendars in Apple's list, and only two of them worked. Most of the rest were ical.mac.com ones (there were a few with other servers which had also gone dead).
These calendars are no longer available, and won't be until the authors wake up and find somewhere else to host them.

  • Finding 3.0.1 CD for Desktop (Palm III-e) older desktop

I am looking for a CD for installing the Desktop Software for a Palm IIIe.  I need version 3.0.1
I downloaded the version 4.1.4 but it is a step backward and isn't easy to read at all, no color looks good,
gridlines in the calendar are nearly invisible and overall I think it is a step backward from the older one.
Does anyone know how to find the 3.0.1 CD ?

Unfortunately that software is no longer supported and provided by us. If you want to have this older software you would need to look at places such as eBay or craigslist.com
