Palm Centro Lockup (AT&T)

Picked up a Palm Centro for the wife last week on Thursday.  On Friday and again tonight, the thing just locks up completely.  Indicator light is red, screen is blank, it is completely unresponsive.  Battery removal and reinsertion causes no change.  After a while it comes back up by itself.
This can't be normal.  Did we get a bad unit?

If you owned other palm devices and synced the centro to it then it could contain corrupted info. If this is the case do a hard reset, and don't sync and test it afterwards. Now if the above is not true then do a hard reset anyways to rule out software, if nothing happens and it continues then I would suggest replacing the device since it's under the 30 day return policy of sprint.

  • How to charge your Palm Centro via 64-bit Windows, with a USB cable

Here is a way to recharge your Palm Centro on your 64-bit Windows computer, through a USB cable.  But first, a few brief explanatory notes...
Note 1:  I have successfully used this method to charge my Palm Centro from my 64-bit Windows 7 computer.  This method probably works for other Palm devices and other 64-bit Windows versions (XP and Vist)...  but I haven't tested this on any other configurations.  Others may feel free to post their successes or failures with their setups.
Note 2:  This method will NOT allow you to HotSync your Palm to the computer via USB.  All it does is let you charge your Palm via USB.  If you need to HotSync your Palm, and you have 64-bit Windows, you have to use Bluetooth or some other method.  To learn how to use Bluetooth to sync, search for "bluetooth sync 64-bit" or something like that on this forum.
Note 3:  If you're wondering why someone would need to use this method - why not just plug the phone into a wall outlet, right? - it's because the Centro's charging jack can get messed up.  Mine has not worked properly for the last several months
Note 4:  I will not be posting any follow-ups to this message.  This is my first (and only) post here...  I'm posting here because I am very grateful to this forum: It is here that I learned how (and why) to sync my Centro to my computer via Bluetooth, because Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows. This is my way of saying "thank you"!  I'm not trying to be harsh by not following up...  it's just that I won't be checking this thread, and I don't want anyone to have bad feelings if they ask questions and I don't respond.  I'll be as thorough as I can in this one posting, though.
Note 5:  I cannot claim credit for actually discovering this solution.  I found it after HOURS of looking online... it was on some obscure website.  Unfortunately, I can't remember where I found the original solution, so I can't credit the discoverer here.  However, I have done my best to provide much more detailed instructions here.
Note 6:  Lastly, Palm should support 64-bit Windows.  Period.  Some of you may say, "It's not Palm's fault - the company that makes the Palm OS is Access, and it's Access's fault for not supporting 64-bit Windows."  Well, this may be true, but Access has stated that Palm has not requested a 64-bit driver.  (In fact, you can call Access and ask them directly.)  And if Palm doesn't ask (and pay) for it, Access sure isn't going to create one on its own.  I used to LOVE Palm devices...  I've used Palms for 12 years now, and for most of that time, I heartily recommended Palms to all my friends.  But, between this problem and the other problems I've had with my current Centro and my previous Treo, I'm done with Palm.  No more for me.
OK, here's how to charge your Palm (finally!)
    1)  If you haven't done so already, install the latest version of Palm Desktop / HotSync on your computer.  You can get this at palm.com, under the "support" section.  (Actually, I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I already had done this.)
    2)  As you're installing the software on your computer, toward the end of the process, do not actually sync your Palm to your computer.  Just cancel or whatever you have to do to avoid that step.  (Remember, the whole point here is that Palm does not have a driver compatible with 64-bit Windows, so you won't be able to sync via USB.)
    3)  If you don't already have it, get the PocketTunes application (also known as "pTunes") on your Palm device.  If you have to install the software, you may need to do so wirelessly or via a 32-bit Windows computer (because, again, Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows).
    4)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your computer.  If you are using a desktop, plug into the USB ports on the BACK of your computer.  These ports are directly powered, whereas the ports on the front of your desktop may not be.  You'll want as much juice as possible to charge your Palm.
    5)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your Palm.
    6)  Turn on the Palm device, and open the PocketTunes application on your Palm.
    7)  PocketTunes will try to connect to Windows Media Player (on your desktop).  Tell your desktop to connect to Windows Media Player.  (You can save time by telling your desktop to do this automatically.)  When PocketTunes connects with Windows Media Player, you'll have a power connection via USB.
    8)  PocketTunes will eventually show that it is "Idle" on the Palm.
    9)  To confirm whether the Palm is charging, look for the charging light (on the Centro, it's on the upper left) to turn solid red.  You can also hit the home button on the Palm to see the battery / charging status.  To get the charging working, you may have to exit PocketTunes and come back into it a few times before the charging light comes on.  I have no idea why you have to do this; I just know what I wind up doing sometimes.  You don't have to unplug and replug the phone from the USB cable, or turn the phone off and on.  Just leave PocketTunes and come back to PocketTunes.
    10)  If you exit the PocketTunes application on the Palm, the Palm will still charge - but you'll get the constant and annoying "no driver" noise from Windows.  To avoid that sound, just keep the Palm on PocketTunes while you have the Palm plugged into the USB cable.
    11)  You can close Windows Media Player on the desktop once you have the Palm charging.
    12)  Once you have this set up properly, you can speed up the process by setting the HotSync cable button to PocketTunes - after all, that button no longer needs to be set up to HotSync via USB cable.
When you have everything set up, here's what you would be doing on a regular basis:
-- Plug USB cable (which is already plugged into your computer) into Palm
-- Hit HotSync button on cable --> This starts PocketTunes --> PocketTunes automatically opens Windows Media Player on the computer
-- See if charging light turns solid red --> If not, exit PocketTunes, then hit HotSync button on cable to start PocketTunes again
-- Repeat until charging light turns solid red (success!)
-- Once the Palm is charging, close Windows Media Player on desktop
Best of luck to all who need this!

Why do you want to create your own driver instead of what comes with the device? If you go that route, you need all of the low level USB RAW protocol from the vendor. Did you get that? Yoe are wasting your time if you don't have that. Is the driver from the vendor documented? If it's a USB connection, how does that connection show up in windows device manager?

  • Palm Centro / Windows Vista 64bit

Has anyone figured out how to sync music to a Palm Centro using Windows Vista 64bit?  My understanding is that there is not a USB driver for Vista 64.  I can already HotSync my Centro using Bluetooth, that works (albeit slow) but can't sync music and as anyone with a Centro knows, removing the memory cards is inconvenient.

Even if there was a way to sync music files to your Centro from a Vista desktop, music files tend to be large and take a long time to sync.  The best way to put music files onto your card with any operating system is by dragging & dropping onto the /audio folder on your card with a card reader.  Removal of the micro SD card from the Centro isn't all *that* inconvenient.  Not like you need to do it very often.

  • Can't sync Palm Centro and Outlook 2007/Windows 7 - please help!

    Hello,
I've never posted on a forum, but I'm at my wits end...!  I've been trying to get my Palm Centro to sync Contacts/Calendar/Memos to Outlook 2007 on my new laptop for a week now with no success.  It used to sync just fine to my old computer with Windows XP and Outlook 2003.  Then that computer crashed (my Outlook files were backed up on an external harddrive).  I received my new computer with Windows 7 XP (32-bit) and Outlook 2007.  I've downloaded the Palm Desktop 6.2, Windows 2007 Conduit, and Software Update 1.03 (Windows installer) for Centro for Verizon.

Can someone please help me transfer Contacts/Calendar/Memos from my Palm Centro to my computer's Outlook 2007?
I've ready about 3rd party software in posts (Pocket Mirror), but I don't know if it applies here because the Contact/Calendar/Memo information is in my Centro - not in Outlook.  I need to get it from my Centro to Outlook 2007.
Any help is greatly appreciated!  Thank you!

Something I noticed in your post - you installed Palm 6.2.2 AND the 2007 conduit.  Palm Desktop 6.2.2. has the 2007 conduits built into it already, and the patch is not needed.  Whether this is the cause of your problems, I'm not sure, but I've fielded several posts of the same issue where the user did the same thing you did!
I'd suggest doing a clean uninstall, and reinstall of Palm Desktop 6.2.2 only.
I admit, I do not use Outlook, nor Win7, so I'm giving you my best guess at a way to solve your problem.  Hopefully, this may lead to a solution!

  • Need a method for importing Palm III data into a Palm Centro

I just bought a Palm Centro (Verizon), with the expectation of importing data from my old Palm III.  From the Palm III Desktop, I exported Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Memos into separate folders (this was done on a Windows XP PC) and copied the resulting folders & files onto a flash drive.  But when I try to import these files into the Palm Centro desktop (on a new Mac Pro with OSX), the backup files are not in a "recognized format."  Does anyone have a process for reliably getting the Palm III data into the Palm Centro?  Also, is there an easy way to purge unwanted Contacts/Calendar events from the Palm Centro handheld?  With all the trial and error, its accumulating a lot of garbage.  Thanks...

  • Only Able to Wirelessly Sync Palm Centro One-Time Before Needing to Reboot My PC to Sync Again

I'm using a Bluetooth dongle to sync between a Palm Centro and my PC, which uses the Windows Vista 64-bit and Outlook 2007. After an unbelievable four hours on the phone with Palm support, I was able to synchronize wirelessly because that was the only option available.
All synchronizations have been problem free for at least four months and then for reasons that escape me, I can only successfully sync once, without having to reboot my PC. It seems that each reboot is good for one sync. When I try to sync more than once, I get the following error message on my Centro:
"Unable to initiate hot sync operation because the port is in use by another application."
I am probably going to be upgrading to Windows 7 over the next month or two and am a bit concerned with the problems I've seen from people who've gone from Vista to Windows 7, who did not have any problems under Vista. The only reason I mention this is because of whatever solution that is suggested, hopefully it will also work under Windows 7.
It is great to have a community that helps with Palm. Thank you very much.
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

The Bluetooth work around as worked for most customers and does not for some. This is for both Vista 64 and Windows 7 64. With your case it sounds like the Bluetooth partnership needs to be renewed. To do that delete both partnerships from the device and then re-add them. If you need more information on this please look at this thread: http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=53678

  • Palm Centro Carriername display

Hi I'm new and this is my first post.
In March I baught a Centro from England to use in Sweden with the carrier Comviq / Tele 2.
I noticed emedietly two problems one minor and one for me vital  error.
I reported the problem to Palm Support in Ireland and after over 50 mail trying to explain and even trying to help them correcting the problem I only got
replys like have you resetted the phone have you installed any program, you sertanly recognise the totaly ignoranse for take the problem seriously.
I got so upset so I reported the malfunctioning phone to VISA as a fraud and thankfully they have now refunded the hole amount for the purchase of the PALM Centro.
And I didn't even had to send the phone back. So I experimented with it  and  solved  the problem to get  SMS-Reciept to work and found a solution that I have posted
at TreoCentral and others have confirmed the patch to work.
The other problem with the Carrier Name Display in the phoneapp is more of an cosmetic thing and I haven't looked into it so deep because it's only cosmetic.
But I got some PM from people asking me if i have found a solution, and  I promised to look into it.  But I need some basic  information.
So what I need to know is where the Phone  Application reads this information carriername, is it from the SIM Card or is it from any database file like CarrierProfiles2.pdb or NetworkProfiles.pdb that is extracted from CarrierCustomisation.prc in ROM.
Any help appreciated because PALM seems not to care and it would be fun to solve before Palm is vanished.
