Palm Centro Won't Power On

Alright, so I've had my palm Centro for almost a year now and have run into the infamous Hotsync Loop problem once before. I did a soft reset and it fixed the problem. Now it has happened again and the phone will not respond to soft or hard resets at all. Yes, it was charged and the light turns on when it is charging. No, there was no water damage or 3rd party application installation.
It seems to me that the problem has no real solution other than replacement, and I have no intention of getting another Centro.
My only question is whether I'll be able to salvage my contacts and transfer them to another phone. Verizon is my carrier and I have never Hotsynced the phone to my computer so it is not backed up.
Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

The only thing left to try is cleaning the connector on the bottom of the Centro. Is there any green corrosion on the connector?
Take out the battery and wait for at least 1 minute to allow the Centro to power off completely.
Take a soft lint free cloth and dampen with alcohol. Clean the connector. Wait for the alcohol to dry and then power on the Centro to see if it will stop hotsync looping.
If you never hotsync to the PC you can use a program called NVbackup to backup your device to an SD card. Do a google search for the program, it is free.
If the Centro will not stop hotsync looping, unfortunately there is no way to recover the data on the Centro.

  • Palm centro won't ring

For some reason my new palm centro won't ring, show any missed calls, or let me check my voicemail at home, even though it shows all bars and appears to have network service. I can, however, do all of these things in other locations.
I was on the phone w/ tech support for 45 minutes trying to get to the bottom of it and they said I should consider having it replaced where I bought it. But I've been reading online complaints from others who have gotten replacement phones and are having the same problems so I don't want to replace it if that won't address the problem.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks,

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
For some reason my new palm centro won't ring, show any missed calls, or let me check my voicemail at home, even though it shows all bars and appears to have network service. I can, however, do all of these things in other locations.
As I understand your situation, the phone works correctly (it rings, shows missed calls, and lets you check voice mail, etc.) in locations other than your home.  When you get home, these things no longer work?
Are you able to make any outgoing calls from your home?

My Palm Z22 will not power up.  It was working yesterday morning and just shut off while at my desk.  I thought it might be the battery so I plugged it in to charge it, but it still won't power up at all.  Is there some sort of reset button?

Look at the back of the device for the tiny hole marked "Reset"... Press gently with a paperclip, etc. and release.

Have you tried a Soft Reset?  It's the first thing to do with any Palm "hiccup"... Pull the battery, wait 10 seconds, and replace.

  • Palm Centro won't sync Contacts with Desktop

It seems that a few people have had this problem, and I haven't really seen it answered yet.  When I enter new contacts in Palm Desktop, they do not get sync'ed to my Centro.  The log will just look like this:
HotSync session completed successfully on 07/25/08 21:47:35
HotSync session started on 07/25/08 21:47:32, and completed in 3.0 seconds
     To Do List synchronized successfully
     Duration: 0.4 seconds
     Memo Pad synchronized successfully
     Duration: 0.4 seconds
     Media synchronized successfully
     Duration: 1.6 seconds
In other words, Address Book does not even show up here.  I deleted my Hotsync ID on the Centro and changed it in Desktop, and that seemed to sync everything back up again.  But the problem still exists when I try to add a new contact.  (I also did a hard reset, and then everything sync'ed over as well... and now I'm back to ground zero.)O  Adding a new contact on the Palm likewise does not sync back to the Desktop.
I have checked the conduits on both the Palm and in HotSync manager 1000 times, and they are set to synchronize properly.
I do not use Exchange, although I did unsuccessfully try to set it up once with my work e-mail (never actually worked, and I've since deleted the VersaMail account).  I noticed this problem after the recent firmware update, but that's not to say that it's the culprit.
Any help or insight would be most appreciated!

Once you have successfully synced to an exchange server the only way to completely remove it from the device is a hard reset, one thing you might want to try is a program called NVbackup, back your device hard reset and then do a selective restore and sync back just your contacts, this should then completely remove the exchange account and help you keep your contacts, you may want to manually jot down your contacts just in case though.

  • Palm Centro won't work

I had a Centro, and then the screen cracked. I got another one (refurbished), and now it's having problems. When I put the battery in, sometimes it loads up to the screen where it connects to Sprint, and then turns off. The led then blinks once, for about half a second, then the phone is dead. After about 5 minutes when I re-insert the battery, It chooses whether to repeat what happens above or just stay dead and blink again. It's not the battery, because I've tried it with two different batteries, and both batteries work on my other Centro. If someone can help me found out what's wrong thanks, any help is appreciated.

Try a hard reset to get the Centro back to factory settings. Do not sync. and see if you have the same issue. If you do, then the Centro needs to be repaired.

A couple months ago, I bookmarked this page:
    http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=17980
I NEED the information on it regarding what to do about syncing via bluetooth for a Palm Centro. I now regret not printing it when the post was visible, but now I get a "message not found" error.
I thought that page had step by step how-to for syncing with bluetooth to the Centro.  Since I have Vista 64-bit, I know that's what I need to do.
Any ideas what happened to that post? Was it moved? To where? I've been browsing the board for an hour now and getting really frustrated.  Thanks.

  • How to charge your Palm Centro via 64-bit Windows, with a USB cable

Here is a way to recharge your Palm Centro on your 64-bit Windows computer, through a USB cable.  But first, a few brief explanatory notes...
Note 1:  I have successfully used this method to charge my Palm Centro from my 64-bit Windows 7 computer.  This method probably works for other Palm devices and other 64-bit Windows versions (XP and Vist)...  but I haven't tested this on any other configurations.  Others may feel free to post their successes or failures with their setups.
Note 2:  This method will NOT allow you to HotSync your Palm to the computer via USB.  All it does is let you charge your Palm via USB.  If you need to HotSync your Palm, and you have 64-bit Windows, you have to use Bluetooth or some other method.  To learn how to use Bluetooth to sync, search for "bluetooth sync 64-bit" or something like that on this forum.
Note 3:  If you're wondering why someone would need to use this method - why not just plug the phone into a wall outlet, right? - it's because the Centro's charging jack can get messed up.  Mine has not worked properly for the last several months
Note 4:  I will not be posting any follow-ups to this message.  This is my first (and only) post here...  I'm posting here because I am very grateful to this forum: It is here that I learned how (and why) to sync my Centro to my computer via Bluetooth, because Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows. This is my way of saying "thank you"!  I'm not trying to be harsh by not following up...  it's just that I won't be checking this thread, and I don't want anyone to have bad feelings if they ask questions and I don't respond.  I'll be as thorough as I can in this one posting, though.
Note 5:  I cannot claim credit for actually discovering this solution.  I found it after HOURS of looking online... it was on some obscure website.  Unfortunately, I can't remember where I found the original solution, so I can't credit the discoverer here.  However, I have done my best to provide much more detailed instructions here.
Note 6:  Lastly, Palm should support 64-bit Windows.  Period.  Some of you may say, "It's not Palm's fault - the company that makes the Palm OS is Access, and it's Access's fault for not supporting 64-bit Windows."  Well, this may be true, but Access has stated that Palm has not requested a 64-bit driver.  (In fact, you can call Access and ask them directly.)  And if Palm doesn't ask (and pay) for it, Access sure isn't going to create one on its own.  I used to LOVE Palm devices...  I've used Palms for 12 years now, and for most of that time, I heartily recommended Palms to all my friends.  But, between this problem and the other problems I've had with my current Centro and my previous Treo, I'm done with Palm.  No more for me.
OK, here's how to charge your Palm (finally!)
    1)  If you haven't done so already, install the latest version of Palm Desktop / HotSync on your computer.  You can get this at palm.com, under the "support" section.  (Actually, I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I already had done this.)
    2)  As you're installing the software on your computer, toward the end of the process, do not actually sync your Palm to your computer.  Just cancel or whatever you have to do to avoid that step.  (Remember, the whole point here is that Palm does not have a driver compatible with 64-bit Windows, so you won't be able to sync via USB.)
    3)  If you don't already have it, get the PocketTunes application (also known as "pTunes") on your Palm device.  If you have to install the software, you may need to do so wirelessly or via a 32-bit Windows computer (because, again, Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows).
    4)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your computer.  If you are using a desktop, plug into the USB ports on the BACK of your computer.  These ports are directly powered, whereas the ports on the front of your desktop may not be.  You'll want as much juice as possible to charge your Palm.
    5)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your Palm.
    6)  Turn on the Palm device, and open the PocketTunes application on your Palm.
    7)  PocketTunes will try to connect to Windows Media Player (on your desktop).  Tell your desktop to connect to Windows Media Player.  (You can save time by telling your desktop to do this automatically.)  When PocketTunes connects with Windows Media Player, you'll have a power connection via USB.
    8)  PocketTunes will eventually show that it is "Idle" on the Palm.
    9)  To confirm whether the Palm is charging, look for the charging light (on the Centro, it's on the upper left) to turn solid red.  You can also hit the home button on the Palm to see the battery / charging status.  To get the charging working, you may have to exit PocketTunes and come back into it a few times before the charging light comes on.  I have no idea why you have to do this; I just know what I wind up doing sometimes.  You don't have to unplug and replug the phone from the USB cable, or turn the phone off and on.  Just leave PocketTunes and come back to PocketTunes.
    10)  If you exit the PocketTunes application on the Palm, the Palm will still charge - but you'll get the constant and annoying "no driver" noise from Windows.  To avoid that sound, just keep the Palm on PocketTunes while you have the Palm plugged into the USB cable.
    11)  You can close Windows Media Player on the desktop once you have the Palm charging.
    12)  Once you have this set up properly, you can speed up the process by setting the HotSync cable button to PocketTunes - after all, that button no longer needs to be set up to HotSync via USB cable.
When you have everything set up, here's what you would be doing on a regular basis:
-- Plug USB cable (which is already plugged into your computer) into Palm
-- Hit HotSync button on cable --> This starts PocketTunes --> PocketTunes automatically opens Windows Media Player on the computer
-- See if charging light turns solid red --> If not, exit PocketTunes, then hit HotSync button on cable to start PocketTunes again
-- Repeat until charging light turns solid red (success!)
-- Once the Palm is charging, close Windows Media Player on desktop
Best of luck to all who need this!
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

Why do you want to create your own driver instead of what comes with the device? If you go that route, you need all of the low level USB RAW protocol from the vendor. Did you get that? Yoe are wasting your time if you don't have that. Is the driver from the vendor documented? If it's a USB connection, how does that connection show up in windows device manager?

I just bought a Palm T|X. After charging it, I set it up and then unplugged it. The problem is, it won't power up unless it's plugged in. When it does power up, the time and date settings have defaulted to 1/1/2005 00:00. However, it did keep the third party programs and contact data.

One thought: Return it immediately to the store where you got it, if you just bought it, and get a replacement or your money back. .
If you can't, call Palm and send it in for repair, or if you can, replacement. Palm has a couple of bugs, one is the start button. If you  can't get it to start, then it doesn't work. For what you paid, it should. The reboot (which is what is resetting your time and date)  may indicate a short or other non software problem. Don't fiddle. Get rid of it, get it replaced or get it fixed.

  • Can't sync palm centro with Mac G4 and palm software 4.2.1

I just purchased a palm centro690 smart phone.  My service is with verizon.  I have a Mac G4 with OS 10.4.11.  I already had palm software installed on my computer and was using the palm calendar as my main calendar.  My calendar and address data won't sync with my palm centro.  I've tried changing the settings of the conduits to 'MacIntosh overrides device'.  I've tried removing and then reinstalling the palm software as well.  Strangely enough, the memos and the tasks did hotsync.  I spent around 2 hours with  palm tech support and nothing is working.  I'm not completely sure, however, that I correctly removed the palm software from my desktop before reinstalling the new software.  Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Allen G
Thank you so much for your reply.  I did speak to a different customer service person at Palm tech support.  I think that the problem was that I had a different username on my device (from a previous test) and after changing that and doing a hard reboot of the phone and also changing the settings on the proper conduits, it is now working.  I had tried changing the settings on the conduits before, but I think that it had synced with the wrong username on the device for some reason.  It now seems to be working.

  • Centro won't Hotsync Calendar and Contacts with desktop

Here's my problem.  I hotsync, but my Calendar and Contacts don't transfer to or from the handheld to the desktop.  I'm using a Palm Centro and trying to sync with Palm Desktop 4.2.1 on a MacBook running MacOS 10.4.11.
I already tried a complete restart of my Centro, erasing all user data.  I then hotsynced it and it restored from the backup on my MacBook, but this did not fix the problem.  It restored my contacts and all my apps to their prior status, but I lost all the Calendar data in my Centro.  I still have the data on the MacBook from whenever it was just before it stopped synching correctly.
The log proposes that I run the Contacts and Calendar applications and then run a hotsync.  I did that, but no results.  I still get the same stuff in the log.
    Please help.

This may be dumb, but I did not think to look for this until i called Palm for help...
After I had issues syncing, I re-installed the Palm software..when you do that, it sometimes turns off the ability to sync. To confirm that you have the ability to sync,  open Palm Desktop and go to Hotsync --> Setup, and check the HotSync Controls to see if it is "Enabled"
Also, if you have problems syncing with Entourage...try this...
