Palm Desktop 6.2 hangs on "media" button

Recently I purchased a Palm Centro and last night installed the Desktop software 6.2 on top of the previous 4.1.4, which I had for my Tungsten E (as the instructions indicate).  Things seemed to go okay, but every time I hit the "media" button on the software, the progress bar gets about a third of the way complete before it hangs.  I've tried rebooting, etc., but to no avail.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
John S.

I've just upgraded from my old Tungsten T2 which died on me to a Tungsten Tx which I bought second hand from ebay this week.  It came without the install disk so I downloaded the currrent PDT software for Tx from the Palm download site.  I am running Windows XP Home on my laptop and an old PC and Windows Vista 64 bit  on my new PC.  Given the problems with Vista 64 bit version I have been relying on my lap top.  However having sorted out most of the teething problems I am still left with the same probl;em as you, everything seems to work and hotsunc correctly but as soon as I press the media tab the progress bar states that it is loading.... then hangs after about a third of the progress. Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL shows that the application is not responding.  I can bluetooth images to my palm from my phone and I suspect if I put the images onto an SD card the Palm will recognise them, but I can't use PDT to manage the media.  So if anyone else has any suggestions I would also be interested to hear them.

  • Palm Desktop Media App freezes

I have a Palm Centro (AT&T), Palm Desktop by Access version 6.2.2, Windows Vista. I'd like to move my photos off the phone and onto the expansion card. When I open Palm Desktop, and click on the Media button, it freezes. It just sits there, and the little circle thingy (Vista version of the hourglass) just keeps spinning. I've left it doing that for over a half hour, then end up using the Task Manager to shut down Palm Desktop.
I'd really like to get this working, as it's easier to manage my photos this way. Any advice? Alternatively, another way I can do the shifting of my photos?

  • Photos not in Palm Desktop

Have Zire 71, software version 4.1.  Saw ad to upgrade to 4.1.1e & did so.  Horrible results.  Reloaded original Palm software but my photos do not appear in Palm Desktop even after successful (?) synch.  Photos are in handheld and Explorer shows them in Palm/Photos.

Hello 14931, Welcome to the Palm Community Forum.
The dowload versions of Palm Desktop do not include a Media conduit with them, thus no transfer of photos.
I'd suggest a clean uninstall/reinstall of your original Palm Desktop.  Instructions for a clean uninstall here:

  • Running Palm Desktop without Admin Privileges?

I'm trying to get Palm Desktop 6.2 working on my company's Win 7 laptop. To get it to (mostly) work, I had to install using the administrator password.  In its wisdom, the company does not give me permanent admin privileges but provides a temporary checkout mechanism for the administrator password.  Palm Desktop will only run only if I run it as administrator with the password enabled and checked out (and entered when the program is run), an incredibly tedious procedure just to run Palm Desktop.  Is there any way to do the password checkout just once and enable running Palm Desktop just as a user to avoid this tedious procedure?  Otherwise, running as a user, Palm Desktop will just hang at the splash screen.  I tried changing privileges (UAC) to all the program files in the Programs (x86)\Palm folder to allow access to users but that didn't help.  Is it to the data as well?  Thanks in advance for any help.
    mraki
P.S.  I posted earlier with the missing files problem listed in the registry (Annanotifier.dll, pdn20.dll, AlarmNotify.dll, EASNotify.dll) and these still post a HotSync missing files error but seem to cause no problem other than the error message.  Thanks for any help here as well.

I'm afraid I have no personal experience with what you're attempting to do...
All I can remember is that Full Admin rights were supposed to be granted to the user account during the entire installation of Palm Desktop, and a successful HotSync performed.  Whether the check-out routine is doing this is beyond me.
Once the above is complete, the rights can be revoked back to "User".
You might want to search over at Brighthand.com for some information on this subject.

  • Cannot install Palm Desktop - Z22

The Z22 Palm Desktop installtion program hangs up while "removing applications" on a Windows XP Pro SP2 computer. Palm chat was unable to help and there are a lot of questions regarding this issue on the Web but no answers that work. Any help in getting this Z22 Palm Desktop installed is truly appreciated.
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

Thanks for your suggestion. The original attempt to install the Z22 Desktop failed in the "removing applications" step and actually removed Palm Desktop from the Add or Remove Programs list. Palm chat had me rename some folders and delete some hive keys but the problem continues. The removal process seems to be the hangup. The program cannot remove the older version of Palm One and it cannot proceed to a point where it can install the new software. I searched for a way to install the new one without attempting to remove the old one but i couldn't find any solution like that.
    Thanks again.

  • Media button freezes in Palm Desktop!

I've chatted with two guys at palm, and I'm getting nowhere fast!  I have a new Centro through Verizon and everything works great, except that the Media button on the Palm Desktop freezes everytime I try to go into it.  It'll say "loading" across the bottom, but it never goes anywhere and the rest of the program locks up so that I have to end it using the Task Manager.  I have Vista, but I don't think I should need to download the Vista update off of palm's site, because I just got the phone about 2 weeks ago.  The two guys on chat both tried to help me clear my registry and then I had to uninstall and reinstall the desktop, but all to no avail.  3 hours of chatting made me think they didn't know what they're talking about!  Has anyone else had this problem?  And, if so, how did you resolve it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Palm Desktop hangs trying to open Note Pad or Voice Memo

I just purchased a Palm TX after being a devoted fan of the IIIxe for years.  First I couldn't get the computer to recognize the USB device so I manually pointed it to the driver. Then, after installing the software that came with the device (version 4.2), I tried to do a hotsync. It failed part way through and left the device unusable, stuck with the power on/Powered by Palm splash screen recycling and no response from any keys. So, I downloaded the latest Palm Desktop software (6.2.2). Once I had done that I was able to get it to sync. Whew!
Not so fast. While the Calendar, Contacts, Memos, To Do, and Media buttons allow access just fine, the Note Pad and Voice Memo buttons cause the desktop application to hang. All I can do is to go to the Task Manager and kill the program. I spent over an hour on the phone with tech support but they couldn't figure it out, either. The guy finally said he'd have to go research the problem and would get back to me. I tried moving the (empty) Note Pad folder under the username (at the time I handn't realized that Voice Memo was having the same problem) and doing a hotsync but that didn't solve the problem**. Nor did rebooting PC and doing a soft reset on Handheld. I also changed the hotsync settings to have the Note Pad and Voice Memo applications on the device overwrite the application and did a hotsync. All of those were things done under the direction of the tech support guy. After he hung up, I tried doing a repair of the program followed by a hotsync but that didn't solve the problem, either. The problem is strictly with the desktop application. The handheld works fine.
    Any suggestions?
**(One other thing that has me confused is that the new device was set up using a different username than the old device, at least the username of the new device doesn't match the name of the user folder from the old device and there was no folder created with the username I used on the new device.  I had to import the data from the old device to get it into the new device.  If you're confused, you're not the only one--my head is beginning to spin)
    Post relates to: Palm TX

Not surprising (to me, at least), that didn't work. In fact, the problem occurred even before importing the data in. I exported the data from the existing user, created a new user, and did a hard reset on the device. Even before importing the data, as soon as I clicked on the Note Pad icon in the desktop application, the application got stuck. Since I never used the Note Pad or Voice Memo portions of the applications in the past, there was never any data to export or import, so I don't think the issue is with the data from the old user, it's strictly with the application itself. One thing I find interesting is that in the Task Manager, the application doesn't say it's not responding in the Application tab and trying to stop the program from there doesn't actually stop it. I have to go to the Process tab in order to stop the application. <sigh> I'm really beginning to lose patience with this thing.

  • Palm Desktop 6.2.2/Win 8 shows Media and Install? TRY THIS!

I now have a Windows 8.1 loaner from HP, and used it to compose this help file!   Thanks HP!
If Palm Desktop 6.2.2 only shows Media and Install, try this:  Right-click on the shortcut for Palm Desktop, then choose "Run as Administrator".  The other modules should appear.
To make Palm Desktop "Run as Administrator" every time in Windows 8/8.1:
Close Palm Desktop, if open.  (This is a very important thing to always do when using 6.2.2 - it has been known to lose data when a computer is shut down without closing the program!)
Right Click on the Palm Desktop Icon in the Metro screen, then choose "Open File Location".  You will now see the actual file for the shortcut.
Right-click on the "Palm Desktop" shortcut file, then Properties.  Now pick the Compatibility Tab at the top.
At the bottom of the Compatibility Tab is a checkbox:  "Run this Program as Administrator".  Put a check in the box, then click OK  to close the window.
Try opening Palm Desktop, all the modules should appear.  You may see a box open when you close the program asking "Did the program run correctly?"   I picked "Yes", and it's been working fine since then!
If you have an older PalmOS device (pre T|E for example)  and still can't see any data after trying the above, you may need to use the PalmHotSyncSetup program available from pimlicosoftware.com.  This will translate the databases from the older style to one Palm Desktop 6.2.2 can process.

I found out how to fix it.
I have been having trouble since the new Windows patches came through.
Right click on your shortcut and select Properties
    Click on Open File Location
Right click on Palm.exe file and select Properties
    Select Run as Administrator
Also select run as Windows 7
    and apply.
Try to sync again and it should show all of your options.

  • No Media Button using Palm Desk top 6.2 and Windows Vista

I installed Palm Desk Top on my XP machine today and noticed a Media Button. I have been using the same version of Palm Desk Top on MY laptop which runs Vista Home Premium. How can I get the Media button on my Vista machine?
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

This version of Palm Desktop (and Hotsync) are from Access (the company that acquired PalmSource). Palm does not own these applications and may not have legal rights to modiify them any longer.
Access provided the absolute minimum and did not include any enhancements that Palm made to prior versions of these applications when Palm and PalmSource had better working relations.
Access is currently primarily interested in getting their competing operating system to market.

  • Palm Desktop software only displaying Media option

I have a Z22, and a PC running Vista.  I have used the Palm desktop for a couple of years with no problems.
The only change I made recently to my PC is installing Firefox.
The next time I opened the Palm Desktop, all the items like my Calendar, Memos, etc were no longer on the desktop display.
The only two items are Media and Install.
Attempting to find the desktop again, I tried to reinstall the software from the original disk.
It would not run, giving me an error and exiting from the installation.
So, I downloaded the desktop 6.2 from the Palm website.
No change, I still only see the Media and Install items.
What is the next thing to try?  My Z22 still has my contacts and other information, but it no longer appears on my computer.
    Thanks for your advice.

    Two things to try:
    1. Next time you run Palm Desktop, right-click on the Palm Desktop icon first and choose "Run as Administrator".  Everything should reappear.
    2. Turn off "User Account Control" in Vista.  Start Button/Contol Panel/User Accounts/Turn off User Account Control.

  • Palm Desktop software not responding when clicking on "Media"

I have a Palm Centro (Sprint) and am trying to get a photo that I took on my phone transferred to my computer.  I recently updated my software to Palm Desktop by Access v6.2.2.  When I try to get into the "Media" section, the software locks up and I get a "not responding" message.  Everything else (contacts and calendar, which is all I care about) seems to be working fine.
How can I get my photos off my phone?  Thanks for any help.

Hello khodes and welcome to the Palm forum.
I don't have a Centro so I can't test whether or not Palm Desktop will hang when I click the Media icon in Palm Desktop. It seems to be working here, but I'm using Palm Desktop 6.2.2 on Windows Vista with a Treo 755p.
One work around is to use a card reader/writer to copy the data from your card to your computer.  Do you know if you are saving the photos you are taking with your Centro to a microSD card?  If so, all the photos should be in a folder called DCIM on your card.

Could be anything from a bad download to a bad installation. First lets try the easy uninstall. Just go into your control panel, remove Palm Desktop restart your PC. Be sure to restart and not sleep. Most Vista PC's are setup to sleep. Then download from the website and reinstall. Skip any sync options you get and restart again. Open Palm Desktop then and see if it works.

    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

what version are using for the palm desktop? it seems that you might have some corrupted media files. to challenge that, you need to try emptying the media contents by simply removing the photos folder inside the username folder. here's how:
    1. close the palm desktop
    2. go to c:\program files\palm\username folder (for v4.2)
        go to C:\Documents and Settings\your user login\My Documents\Palm OS Desktop\username folder (v6.2)
    3. right click on photos and choose cut then paste it in your PC's desktop for easy access
    4. open palm desktop and access media (check if it will still hang up or it can now be opened)
    5. if you can now open it, then that means you may have stored a corrupted media file
to recover back the media files and avoid the corrupted media file again, you need to add again the files one by one. it's a tedious process but it will guarantee a good result.
    1. since your media in the palmdesktop is now empty, click add media
    2. locate the photos folder in the PC's desktop and open it then locate the folder backupforinternal or any other folder that may contain your photos. in some cases, the albums are represented or named after the category.
    3. select a photo and then click ok
    4. it should be back inside your palmdesktop
