Palm Desktop compatibility with Windows7

I have used Palm DESKTOP for quite a while. The version I have is 4.1. I have Windows XP machine. I do NOT use a hand-held device, I just use the Palm Desktop as a Personal Info Manager.
I am now considering buying a new computer with Windows7 preinstalled.
The question I have:  are there any issues with installing the Palm Desktop 4.1.1  on the new machine?
Any problems?
Thanks,
Grampyv

    I use Windows Vista Home Premium, and I have installed Palm Desktop 6.2 to be used with a Tungsten E2.  Problem is that I get an AppCrash error message for the program Windows Media Player when the Palm Desktop software is installed on my computer.  About every hour or so, I get the following error message that reads as follows:

    I have deleted the Palm Desktop software from my computer, then deleted the Palm folder under Program files, and finally restarted my computer.  After this the error messages stop.
    I have then reinstalled the Palm Desktop software onto my computer and the AppCrash error messages for Windows Media Player then come back.  Very annoying.
    So far as I can tell, the Desktop software syncs fine, using Outlook program as its source.
    Anyone else have this problem?  Is there a glitch with the Palm Desktop software as it is used in computers with the Windows Vista OS?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Try a clean uninstall of Palm desktop and see if that may correct the issue.
    Here are the clean uninstall instructions for Vista.
    You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something
    happens. You can find your data files by going to Start --> Documents -->
    Palm OS Desktop. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and
    copy. Then go to your PC desktop right click on a blank spot and select paste.
    Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do
    with Palm Desktop from your computer.
    Go to the following locations on the PC and delete the folders listed below.
    C:\Program Files\Palm or Palm One
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Palm or
    PalmOne
    C:\Users\[Vista Login Name]\appdata
    *Note you may need to view hidden folders to get to appdata. To do that go
    into your control panel and open folder options. Go to view tab and uncheck
    hide hidden files.
    Once this is done you will need to delete some registry keys from your PC Operating System.
    Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC
    from starting up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel
    you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a
    PC technician that you can pay to help you. This procedure will show them everything they need to delete. To make sure we have a good copy of the current registry, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
    Go to start on the PC, in the search field type "regedit.exe" without quotes.
    Highlight COMPUTER, go to File --> Export. Should pop up with a Save As box.
    Current location is fine, should be in My Documents or save to a location you will remember. In the file name on the bottom type "backup[todaysdate]" i.e. backup07072008. Next, the hard part.
    The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
    If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician.
    BUT do not turn off your computer.
    The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here
    but if they are delete them)
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Palm, Inc.
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmDesktopAutorun
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\palmOne
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PalmSource
    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm
    Next reboot your computer.
    Then reinstall your palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks
    you for a username and you synced your device before, put in 'test" if you
    did not sync before create a hotsync name.

  • Palm desktop sync with Windows 7 64-bit

    I can see that this topic has been beaten to death here, but I can't seem to find an answer despite a number of search attempts.  I'm trying to hotsync a Treo 90 to a Win7 64-bit machine via a USB connection.  I have Palm Desktop v. 4.0.1 running.  I have downloaded and installed the 64-bit drivers recommended here and can see the Treo in the Device Manager - it seems to be running normally, no yellow query.  Yet, when I try to hotsync from the device, it just hangs, waiting for a connection that never happens.  I'd appreciate any advice as to what I might have done wrong or what to do next to try to fix the problem.  Thanks much,

    I do not know if it will work. In his post at brighthand that he made the Aceeca driver available to the palm community Alex stated that it should work with many Palm devices that were os 4 or 5. You are using an older version of the palm desktop and one of the older os 4 devices. I do know of people with the palm m505 and m515 using the Aceeca driver with success, but they were using a newer version of the palm desktop. I believe most were using the 4.1.4 palm desktop version. I do not know if experimenting with a newer desktop version will help either.

    Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
    You will need the new Palm Desktop 6.2.2 (see Support & Downloads link above at the top of this page).  Then, you will need the new PalmHotSyncSetup application from http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/ .  Note, I have not tried it, but everything I've ever used from Pimloco Software has been first rate, so it should work.
    Let us know how you make out.
    p.s. I doubt it will work if your Vista system is 64-bit.  There are no 64-bit compatible USB drivers.

  • Secure Desktop compatibility with Vista

    Cisco states that CSD version 3.3.0.118 will work on Windows Vista if MS hotfix KB935855 is installed- I have yet to see this work. I've also seen a compatibility chart that states that you need Service Pack 1 on Vista- I have gotten that to work.
    My issue is I have a lot of users who are reluctant to install sp1 on their personal Vista machines. I don't even want to do this on mine because of the other ill effects it can cause. Does anyone know the exact hotfix that is needed for Vista to work with CSD without having to install sp1?

    To the best of my knowledge it can't be done without SP1.

  • 64-bit Windows 7 Pro's Windows XP Mode, Palm Desktop 4.1.4 sync with Palm Vx?

    I last talked about Palm Desktop compatibility with 64-bit Windows at http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=software&message.id=37767.  Fortunately, I haven't replaced my laptop yet, so I am in the enviable(?) position of planning the acquisition of a spanking new machine with 64-bit Windows 7 Pro (sidenote: likely a 14" ASUS).  However, my PDA is still Palm Vx, which requires Palm 4.1.4, which requires 32-bits, which is provided in Windows 7 Pro by its Windows XP Mode.  Has anyone heard any word of whether XP mode allows seamless sync'ing through the serial or IR ports?  Serial is most preferrable, of course, due its speed, lack of headaches with line-of-sight alignment, and the fact that it needs to be docked anyway for recharging.
    I'm not sure if it's as dependent on the Palm Desktop version as much as it depends on the Hotsynch Manager, which is 4.1.0.  There are probably certain Hotsynch Manager versions that are compatible with Palm Desktop 4.1.4 and Palm Vx.

  • Have new computer with new Windows 7, Palm m105, and 4.1.4 palm desktop, trying to get it to synch correctly.

    With new computer I have had to add a USB serial converter to the hot synch cradle. I spent most of the day trying to get the new serial converter to be recognized so that a synch could be performed. It now will synch when I put the palm in the cradle. After installing 4.1.4, In order to get everything to work, I took a recent historicalbackup version of my palmOne program file folder in the Program files, and replaced the entire folder with my historical version. When I opened the desktop software, all my data appears to be there, except that many of my previous entries in the Calendar are now three hours earlier than they used to be and some are moved to an adjacent day. My palm still has the correct information, but a custom synch to overwrite the desktop data with the handheld data produces no change, even though it went through a long synching process. I also have an older computer that has a complete backup copy of everything and the palm software in that one is working properly, so what should I do to correct the data in my Calendar on my new laptop?

    View Solution.

    It looks like you will need to "clean" uninstall Palm desktop and re-install.
    Here are the clean uninstall instructions for XP, see if the palm folders are in the same location. We have not received any info. on windows 7 and how Palm desktop syncs with this version.
    You should first make a copy of your data to have just in case something
    happens. You can find your data files by going to C:\Program Files\Palm or
    Palm One. Highlight your Palm Desktop username and right click and copy.
    Then go to your PC desktop, right click on a blank spot and select paste.
    If this is the first time you are installing Palm desktop and encountering a problem, skip the previous step.
    For Palm desktop 6.2, look in the following location for the folders and files, my documents, PalmOS desktop. You will find the username folder in this location.
    Now you want to uninstall Palm Desktop and remove everything that has to do
    with Palm Desktop from your computer. Like the above folder, delete the Palm folder. Once this is done, you will need to delete some registry keys
    from your PC Operating System registry.
    Word of warning, going here and deleting the wrong thing can cause your PC
    to not start up, crashing and deletion of programs and data. If you feel
    you are unsure of yourself, see if you have a friend that can help you or a
    PC technician that you can pay to help you. This will show them everything
    they need to delete. To retain your current Registry settings, we need to do a backup of the Registry.
    On the PC, go to start and run type "regedit" without quotes
    Highlight MY COMPUTER, go to File --> export. Should pop up with a Save As
    box. Current location is fine should be in My Documents or you can change to a location you will remember. In the file name box, type "Regbackup[todaysdate]" i.e. Regbackup07072008. Next, the hard part.
    The easiest way to make sure your working with the correct key, highlight the key i.e. palm quick install, and press delete on your keyboard. It will ask you, are
    you sure. Say yes. Do the same thing for all keys below.
    If you make a mistake, stop what you are doing. And call a PC technician.
    BUT do not turn off your computer.
    The reg keys are as follows (Note: some of theses reg keys will not be here
    but if they are delete them)
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Palm Quick Install
    * HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\PalmOne File Transfer

    * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PalmSource or anything else that says palm

    Then reinstall your Palm desktop from the CD and do a hotsync. If it asks
    you for a username, enter the name that is on your device in the upper right corner of the hotsync screen and sync.

  • Synching Zire 31 with both Outlook 2003 and Palm Desktop

    I use Outlook at work but not at home so I synch my Zire 31 with Palm Desktop at home.  It works fine synching with both.  I like the Memos and Tasks features better on Palm Desktop, so I would like to use them at work. I'd like my Zire to Synch at work with Outlook for some features (i.e. Contacts and Calendar) but with Palm Desktop for others (i.e. Memos and Tasks).
    When I use the setup CD, it asks if I want to synch with "Palm Desktop" or with "Outlook and Palm Desktop".  Based on this, it sounds like I should be able to choose the 2nd one and synch with Outlook and Palm Desktop, but I can't get it to do that.  When I choose that option and then go into Custom for synch setup, the only options there are for Outlook.  How can I get it use Palm for Memos and Tasks?

    Hi..  Welcome to the Palm forums.  What it is asking is, for Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memos do you want them to sync with palm desktop OR outlook?   Its all four or nothing.  When it is both what it means is if you sync with outlook, calendar, contacts, tasks and memos will sync to outlook all others, media, all your settings etc will go to palm desktop.  The main 4 can NOT be seperated its all or nothing.

  • Help! Can I sync my Palm Desktop with Outlook Web Access?? I'm using a T5 -- NOT wireless, but cable-synced

    I have spent the last 3+ weeks trying to get my Palm Desktop information to sync with an Outlook Web Access account.
    I have been able to sync my Palm Desktop info with Outlook 2007, and I have been able to acess an Outlook Web Access account through a microsoft exchange server.
    BUT, when I talk with tech support.... I get several conflicting answers.  One tech says it should be easily possible; one says I need to buy another monthly service; one says it is impossible and I should just buy a Blackberry.
    At this point.... I'm not sure I actually care what the answer is, but I would just like a definitive answer....
    I have a Palm Tungsten T5.
    I want to sync that Contact and Calendar information regularly with an Outlook Web Access account so that my colleagues can see and edit my schedule as needed.... then the info would sync BACK to my Palm so that I can have my current schedule with me.
    Can anyone shed some light on this please??
    Thank you!
    Emily Koenig
    Post relates to: Tungsten T5

    The short answer is no.
    The t-5 has the ability to connect to an exchange server but the version of versamail it has would only sync mail and calendar. You would have to have a wifi card to be able to do even that. To do what you would want you would need to upgrade the versamail client (I don't believe Palm has an upgrade for the T-5) and a wifi card.

    Hello leechiu2, Welcome to the Palm Support Community.
    Palm has made no mention of suport for Windows 7 with it's legacy software.  We have heard from many users here that the 32bit version seems to work correctly with 6.2.2, and the 64bit version works similarly to Vista64 - only way to sync is via a wireless connection (BlueTooth or Wifi).
    Palm does not release future upgrade plans, but it would be my guess that there will not be any upgrades for Win7...

  • Can't open palm desktop user data

    I just upgraded from a Palm m515 to a Tungsten T3. I followed the directions for this on the Palm website.
    To make a long story short, I have a copy of my data on the tungsten, and a copy on the m515 - but nothing I can access on the desktop! I have several backups, under several user names, at this point. I have desktop v. 4.3.1 rev.D installed (after many uninstalls and installs). I can open the desktop application to an empty file, but when I try to switch to a user with my data in it, the application hangs and I have to force quit.
    I created a new user in the palm desktop, called "New" and did a hotsync with the tungsten. Now "New" won't open in the desktop, either.
    I'm aware of the change in conduit names from Datebook to Calendar, Addresses to Contacts, etc, and from another thread learned that I should put the old conduits in a disabled conduits folder, so I did that. So I guess that means I can't use the m515 as the data source...
    I really don't know what to do to get my palm desktop application - with data - back. I can't use iCal and Address book exclusively because I need the memo pad with categories. I have a current copy of all my palm addresses in the Apple address book, and a three week old copy of the calendar in iCal (so I'd like not to have to use that version of the calendar data.)
    I really hope someone can give me step-by-step instructions that tell me what to do to get out of this fix. It doesn't seem like it should be this hard!
    Powerbook G4 17   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Both the old and new conduits can coexist in the active Conduits folder. This is an exception to the general rule that no two conduits can synchronize the same data type simultaneously. So, you should return the original four—the Datebook Conduit for calendaring data, the Address Conduit for contact data, the Memo Conduit and the ToDo Conduit for task data—to your active folder. The HotSync Manager will properly choose to use the appropriate set for each device.
    You can simultaneously synchronize both your m515 and your Tungsten T3, but they must have different HotSync names. To move the data from your m515, use the Palm conduits set to Handheld overwrites Macintosh to move a copy of all of your data from the m515 to the Palm Desktop. Then export a copy of each of the four data types using the Palm Desktop format.
    Create a new empty user with a unique HotSync name for the Tungsten T3, and import each of the files into that user. Set your conduits to Macintosh overwrites Handheld, and synchronize only your Tungsten. That will move a copy of all of the m515 data stored in the Palm Desktop during your import, on the Tungsten handheld organizer.
    At that point, you can reset your conduits to Synchronize, and continue to synchronize both devices, or you can move from the Palm Desktop to iCal and the Address Book, using either iSync, or the Missing Sync for Palm OS to synchronize one or both devices.

  • Palm Desktop 4.0 for Mac Fails to Install

    I just downloaded Palm Desktop for Mac 4.0 -- actually file name is MacDesktop_40_TV.sit -- but it fails to install. Double clicking on the *.sit file creates a program file named Palm Desktop Installer with a creation date of Sep 17, 2002. When I run the installer, the process aborts at file 749 of 791 (file UPD107). Retrying gives the same result.
    Have others had the same problem? Is it a problem with the *.sit expansion process? Is the installer or the Desktop program incompatible with OS X 10.4.11? Note: I did try to establish a Chat Support Session with Palm tech support, but it asked me to download/install a Java RE plugin, and clicking that download button never started the download, and searching for the plugin on the Palm website came up with nothing....
    Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    I had an identical experience when I first got my handheld - the palm software wouldn't install on my iMac properly - the same error came up every time, and while it had successfully installed the desktop, hotsync manager was sadly missing. I spent hours playing with it to no avail, and the only solution I found was using it on my macbook running 10.5x (as opposed to 10.2.8). However, the date on the installer (2002) reflects the last time it was updated, which means that it should run with no difficulty on any machine since then. The .sit compression has nothing to do with it - it is one of the most common compression formats for the macintosh platform. It might help if you posted the exact error message you got, but a fairly common fix is to repair disk permissions for your hard drive in disk utility.

Maybe this could be why my Pre isn't communicating with my computer/ Palm Desktop?  Now I am bewildered and have exhausted the little I know of computers. I live by this calendar and am lost without it.  Any help is much appreciated.
