Palm Desktop reinstall on new hard drive

Configuration: Palm 515, Windows XP Pro, Palm Desktop 4.1.4, Hotsync 4.0.4
Installed new hard drive on PC, reinstalled Windows, installed Palm Desktop and copied existing files (address, etc) onto new drive.
Problem - User 1's contacts did not appear on Palm Desktop, and User 2's contacts were not current.
Is Hotsynching the only way to update Palm Desktop? Why didn't the newly installed Palm Desktop simply reference the existing files that I copied?

Your computer should have come with, or you upgraded with a 10.6 disk which either contains the full OS X, however the 10.6.3 white upgrade disk doesn't contain the free iLife that's on the colored machine specific disks.
If you don't have either, then call Apple via phone (only) to order your 10.6 disks.

However if your pleased with what's on your present boot drive, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy it to a blank external powered drive and even hold the option key down while booting to boot from it.
Then when you switch hard drives, simply reverse clone onto the new one.
Save you having to backup and reinstall everything new, but a lot of people do that extra work to get a "clean" machine again.

If this is all too much for you, any local PC/Mac repair shop can do the work. Apple charges a fortune and you don't get the drive you want in a lot of cases.

Sometimes the best solutions are the manual ones. There is a mechanical fail safe built in to these devices, I have had to use this method several times myself, so ....
..... Try this:
1) Power off your mac pro.
2) With your finger, pull down the metal bezel on the affected drive.
3) You should now see the front plastic bezel on the affected drive, it is usually black or grey.
4) Look for a small pinhole somewhere on the front. It will have a very small diameter, about 0.5mm.
5) Yes it's there, all cd/dvd drives have one! Note: a small flashlight comes in handy here.
6) Straighten out a standard paperclip for about 2 -3 inches.
7) Insert the paperclip in the small hole and push, you will have some resistance, and then the drive tray will slowly push out about 0.5 inches or more.
8) Grab the tray and pull it out !!
9) You are done!
10) If you do this gently you won't hurt the drive. Boot up and the tray should automatically slide back in. You are good to go.

Need help with Macbook reinstall on new hard drive!

So my old MacBook A1181 was damaged a bit in a fall from a shelf. I followed all the directions on PowermacMedic (bless them!) and put in a new LCD screen, as the old one was cracked. Cleaned a lot of cat hair out of machine while I was at it.
I also replaced the hard drive with a new one, because the old one had a question-mark-over-a-folder icon. I'm very proud of myself, as there are only four screws left over. LOL!
So now it's time to reinstall the Tiger system. The optical drive is not working, so I researched on how to make an external hard drive bootable, put the Tiger Installation on that and connected it via FireWire to the old MacBook.
Turned it on and pressed Alt/Option at the same time. Great...up popped the Tiger Installation information. I've clicked on Install, etc., and am at the point where I need to choose a destination drive. Except there is none listed.
I've gone to Disk Utility, and I can see the new drive there, but just the icon as the major piece of hardware...there's no sub-icon for it underneath, like there usually is.
So, any ideas on how to make my new hard drive readable so I can choose it from the Tiger Installer?
Any help would be much appreciated. I've never even attempted to do something like this before, and I don't want to give up just yet!

Do this:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...

I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

itunes library is on separate drive.
How do I get the newly installed itunes to recognise the library without having to manually add 50,000 files?

Problem on Palm Desktop runing on USB hard drive

Two days ago, I rset the data path of Palm Desktop from local C: drive to portable hard drive H:. I check data has transferred to H: drive correctly and Palm Desktop is found to work properly.
After the computer was powered off and switched on again, I run the Palm Desktop and it prompt up a windows of title "User" and requesting me to "Select a user", whereas the user list or profile list is empty. Artificially, I add a new user "test" and continue the Palm Deskto operation. As expected, the new user has no data inside and the "Data directory" is reset to "C:\Documents and Settings\...." by the programme.
Aslo, the original Palm data in H drive is intace. How can I run correctly with my Desktop on portable hard dirve H:?

What OS on the PC? What version of Palm Desktop? Need this to attempt to replicate your issue.
It sounds like you are using Desktop 6.2 which stores it's data in the Documents folder on the PC under a folder Palm OS Desktop. You can change the location of the program install to another drive but the program is still going to default to looking for user data in the documents folder.

I recentlyt had to replace the hard drive on MacBook Pro and can't reinstall Microsoft Office because I don't have the required serial #. I think it was originally installed when I bought the computeer at an Apple store. Any ideas about how to solve this problem?

Try contacting MS and see if they have the registration code since they had to activate it originally.
Do you have the receipt from your original purchase? That will itemize what was installed beyond the packaged operating system material. That will add proof of purchase.

Reinstall on new Hard Drive

My secondary hard drive is dying, so I bought a third one and transferred everything. However, I still need to move my iTunes installation. I have 45Gb of music on my iPod and I don't want to lose it all and have to reimport.
Can anyone tell me how I should go about this? When I uninstall - will it delete all the music files? If so, then can I copy the library away somewhere and paste it back after reinstallation?
I need to get this off the drive as soon as possible so I can bin it.

-first of all you have to know that removing itunes dont affect your library cuz this one is well saved in another directory you may consult it from :
itunes >edit>preferences>advanced
(defualt directory it's C:>document&settings>my documents>my music>itunes>itunes music "if you are using windows")
-second to keep all of your music safe :crate a new samart playlist on itunes >file>new playlist then move to your main itunes library and select all your songs copy it and paste to the playlist just created
by checking the itunes music's directory disribed above you may find all your songs in the new playlist folder once done you have just to do whatever you want with it (copy ,paste,rename ...)

Reinstall after new hard drive

I tried to open CS5 and get the message that I have uninstall adobe and reinstall - error message 6. When I go to the uninstall adobe folder and click on in it it tells me "The alias “Uninstall Adobe Photoshop CS5” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."
I tried to drag across the original uninstall folder from the disc but when I did so got the message 'do you want to replace a more updated version alreadly on your computer?"

HOTSYNC WITH PALM DESKTOP LOCATED ON AN EXTERNAL DRIVE

I've been hotsynching between my desktop, laptop and Z22. Recently I replaced the desktop harddrive with a much larger one. I put the old harddrive in a USB external drive housing and now have a nifty 40 GB external drive. Does anyone know how I can hotsync the Z22 one last time with the Palm Desktop info on the external drive? Then I'll install Palm Desktop on the new harddrive in my desktop, and hotsync from the Z22 to the new harddrive.

Is all your current data on the Z22? If it is, install Palm desktop on the new hard drive and sync the Z22 with desktop overwrites handheld selected in hotsync manager.
Another option is to install the version of Palm Desktop that you were using on the old hard drive, copy the username folder on the old hard drive in the Palm folder, Paste the username folder into the Palm folder on the new hard drive. Open Palm desktop and the data should be there.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not work with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

There is a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.
