Palm Desktop software - Fails to open with msg "Error: Failed to open Address Book database"

In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working.  So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just yesterday, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open Address Book database”.  I think this error was caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system yesterday.
I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my address list, calendar, and memo.  The problem is that the error with the Address Book database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1 on Windows XP SP3.  I do NOT  have an export file of the Palm address book or other databases.  However, I do have five levels of backup history on my external Maxgor backup drive.
Specifically, on my current c drive I have files in the directory:
C:\Program Files\Handspring\WR\address
address.bak                  5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
            address.dat                   5/24/2011
            Personal.ABA                11/6/2008
            Unfiled.ABA                   3/28/2008
On my most recent backup of my system, there are the following files:
address.bak                 5/16/2009   (from last sync before I broke Visor)
                        address.dat                  5/12/2011
                        Personal.ABA              11/6/2008
                        Unfiled.ABA                  3/28/2008
I have not listed the four older backup versions.
I haven’t tried any corrective measures yet (I don’t want to make matters worse) and am hoping that someone can guide me along the right path.
Is it possible for me to just rename the “current” address.dat file to something like address.SAV and then copy the Address.dat file file with date of 5/12/2011 into the current directory.  Will the software then just use the older version of the data, or must I do something else.
I am grateful for any assistance.  Thank you very much.

Thanks for the speedy response.  However, I read the article for which you provided the link, and I hve also read many other articles that I found via search, but I don't think these will help me.  All of these articles seem to assume that (1) you have a handheld to which you can sync and thereby rebuild the database on the PC, or (2) you have a backup that you created via the Palm Desktop export function.  Unfortunately, I have neither and so I don't think any of these solutions will work for me.
I did read with great interest an article that stated that recent versions of Palm Desktop have a built-in function that will repair a corrupted Datebook database.  Will this also fix a corrupted Address Book database which is my problem?
So, I downloaded and attempted to install the latest version of Palm Desktop.  I was careful to read the instructions that stated NOT to uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, but to just install the latest version on top of my current Palm Desktop.  However, when I attempted to do the installation, the installer software said it could not install on top of my current software and that I should first uninstall my current software.
I have some questions now:
(1) If I uninstall my current version of Palm Desktop, will this destroy my Address Book, Datebook, and Memo databases ( I don't care about the ToDo database)?  If so, what can I do to preserve those databases?
(2) Is there really a function built in the recent versions of Palm Desktop that will fix a corrupted database?  Is this an "automatic" function that will detect and fix a broken database or is this something I will have to invoke?
Thanks for your help.

  • Palm Desktop software - Fails to open with msg "Error: Failed to open To Do List database"

In July 2009 I dropped my trusty Visor on a tile floor and it stopped working.  So, in the meantime I have been using only the Palm Desktop software.
Just a couple days ago, when I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop software, it failed with the message “Error: Failed to open To Do List database”.  I think this error may have been caused by a very ungraceful shut-down of my Win XP system the day before.
I really don’t care about the To Do List data since I really don’t use it --- in fact, I haven’t used it in many months.  However, I really do need to use the Palm Desktop software for my contacts, calendar, and memo.  The problem is that the error with the To Do List database seems to be preventing the Palm Desktop software from initializing.
Just guessing, I saved the todo.dat and todo.bak files by renaming them, and then renamed the todo.bak file to todo.dat.  Then I attempted to launch the Palm Desktop application, but it failed with the same error “Error: Failed to open To Do List database”.
I also tried renaming all of the todo files so that none had a name of todo.dat or todo.bak.  The result is that the Palm Desktop software still will not start up.
I think I am using Palm Desktop 4.0.1, at least that is what the help text file seems to tell me.
I am grateful for any assistance.  Thank you.

Your on the correct path by saving the data by renaming the files. But to resolve this error we need to remove the data all together. Since you no longer need this data if you just delete it then it should not matter. If Palm Desktop is giving this error but will not open I doubt that the data can be recovered in any event.

    Post relates to: Palm Vx

I've seen a lot of people post a message that's basically like the problem I'm having. I'm sending this to everyone who had the same general type of question in hopes that my fix might cure your problem also.
My Palm Desktop (4.1.4) would open correctly the first time after installing, but after doing a hotsync it would crash every other time it was opened (using a Tungsten E). I'm running Windows XP Professional, and it would give an error saying "Windows XP has encountered an error and needs to close", or something like that.
I did the usual. Removed the program and reinstalled, which didn't work. I also went through the tedious process of uninstalling the software, then removing every registry entry by hand that referenced the Palm or Pocketmirror, which also didn't work.
I searched through the support files on palmone.com and found something that gave me an idea. It talked about removing a corrupted file to fix problems with the datebook. I hadn't been getting any errors pointing to a specific problem, but on a hunch I deleted the entire address folder out of the Palm directory. That did the trick!
A corrupted address book in the Palm Desktop software was keeping it from running. The problem was how to fix the corruption, which I eventually found on a menu option in the Palm Desktop software.
Below is the fix that worked for me. Caution! Only do this if you have all of the current info in your Palm, because it will erase what's on your Palm Desktop.
    1. Go to your Palm folder on your pc (default install location is c:\palm) and open the folder for your user.
    2. Delete the address, datebook, expense, memopad, note pad and todo folders.
    3. Open the Palm Desktop program.
    4. Do a hotsync.
    5. Important! Don't click on anything else in the Palm Desktop after doing the hotsync. If you change to one of the areas that has corrupted data, it will immediately crash.
    6. Right after doing the hotsync, click Tools on the top menu in the Palm Desktop, then Options. Click on the Tools tab and then click Check Now to fix the corrupted data.
    7. Click OK.
That should hopefully get you running again. Let me know if that worked for you.

  • Palm Desktop Software crashes immediately upon opening

    Hi All,
My Palm Desktop software won't open.  When I try to open it (either w/ the icon or the start menu), I see the Palm Desktop logo, then the program seems to open but all I see is a whitescreen, and an almost immediately error message from windows that reads "Microsoft OS Desktop Application has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  Then the only option I have is to click "close," and the program closes out.  So its impossible to open the softare.
Interestingly, the hotsync operation still works.  The desktop application just won't open.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but still the problem persists.  I have read a few places to remove the US Robotic registry keys, but after looking them up using REGEDIT off the Run menu, I can't find them....maybe I am not doing a complete uninstall, and am not completely removing these keys?  Does anyone have a comprehensive list of registry key locations?  Or maybe its a problem with windows?  I am using Vista.  I tried a system restore back to a point in time when the Palm Desktop was working, but even after that I had no luck.
Does anyone have a suggestion of what I should do?
    Thank you!
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

If this is your first Palm device, you will not see registry keys for either USRobotics or PalmOne. These entries are relevant to users who have upgraded devices and installed newer versions of Palm Desktop over older installs for the old devices.
There are a number of threads posting complete uninstallation directions; use the search function (up top when you exit this thread) on Registry and you should be able to find one or more of them.

I have a problem with my Palm IIIxe syncronization via Keyspan's serial adapter to USB. Prior to installation of 10.4.7 the whole kludge worked (ah, the beauty of Mac hardware & software) and the my old PowerMac G4 connected fine. Now, it fails. The hardware connection is good, as pushing the 'Hotsync' button on my Palm's cradle actives the HotSync Manager 3.1 & a screen pops up informing me of the start. Unfortunately, it does not progress from there & the Palm times out saying there was a failure to communicate.

First thing is first that text size is really small and I have horrible eyes.
Ok next is the troubleshooting, what we are going to need to do is figuring what is causing the palm desktop to crash, I bet it is your data, so lets see if I am right.
You first need to locate your userfolder, it is located in program files/palm/username/
Once you have your user folder in that folder you will see a bunch of folders, I'm first concerned with datebook. Go in datebook and look for the datebook.dat file, cut that file out of that folder and place in the root of your userfolder.
Going back into palm desktop (if it opens without error) you will see your calendar is gone.
Next you need to tell palm desktop to open in something other than address or calendar I usually suggest memos. To do this you can go to tools/options and change the view palm desktop opens in (default is address).
Once you have it changed to memos you need to put your calendar back into palm desktop. So close palm desktop and go back to your userfolder. Grab the datebook.dat file off of the root of your username and place it back in the datebook folder (it will ask you if you want to overwrite the existing files, tell it yes)
Ok so your calendar is back in your username time to go back to palm desktop, relaunch palm desktop and this time go to tools/options/tools and and check for corrupted records, it will scan your database and fix any corrupted records it finds, tab over to calendar and see if it crashes if it doesn't you are good to go.
Also on a side note if it still crashes with your datebook out of your username, move your addressbook out also, usually the culrpit is calendar but i have seen contacts cause the problem also and on rare occurances both.
Post back if you need more information or any clarification.

  • Palm Desktop Software ver 4.2.1 problem

I have recently switched to Mac and, after having upgraded OS X to 10.4.8 I installed the synchronisation software for Palm ver 4.2.1. The installation worked fine and it was confirmed that it was successful. When I try to synchronise, I get the following error message "You do not have the necessary access privileges. See the administrator for assistance." I am logged in on a administrator account, which is the only account set up on the machine. If I try to open for example the Palm Desktop application directly, the splash screen is shown for two seconds and nothing more happens, the application does not open and there is not error message. I have tried Palm support and have uninstalled and reinstalled on their advice. I have verified and repaired permissions with disk utility. Anyone understand what could be going on?

What problem are you trying to solve? If you want to remove all signs of the Palm desktop software, what I did was open up a finder window, and then I searched for "Palm" and deleted everything that came up, except the Palm folder in my Documents folder.
Until I finally divorced myself from using the Palm desktop software, I had to repeat this operation several times.

  • Palm Desktop Software - need serial number to install....

I have been using a OLD version of Palm Desktop Software as my 'address book' for many years. I am upgrading to a new computer and tried to install the software (Palm IIIC handheld software V3.1 for Windows) onto my new machine (that uses Win 7). towards the end of the installation process, it asks me for the 'Serial Number' to complete the install. The serial number of Palm-branded and palmOne-branded products is included in the ROM, so you can look it up easily.
    Access the Applications launcher

Tap the Version selection in the lower middle section of the screen.

  • Palm Desktop Software Crashed

I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7 and installed the 6.6.2 Palm desktop software so the palm could sync using bluetooth. It worked fine for a month and then it crashed in the middle of a hotsync and the program will not open. I did a clean uninstall, including the registry and reinstalled Desktop and it will not open. During the install, it asked me to do a hotsync and it appeared to work. I tried running as administrator and running in compatibility mode, still no good. Someone on this forum suggested that it was a windows update and that we should reset computer back to initial settings and turning off windows update. I am not going to do that. My wife is attached to her Palm and I need to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you set the HotSync conduit to use "USB" in Palm Desktop?
When you plug in the Palm E2, does your computer recognize it and make a noise?
Make sure you are not plugging it into a "hub", but directly into the PC.
Aceeca only offers a patch - I'm not sure why you uninstalled Palm Desktop!
Be sure when you open the Device Manager on your computer that the Palm E2 is still active, and not "gone to sleep".
When all else fails, a Clean Uninstall and Reinstall can usually fix most issues (as long as your USB ports are working correctly on the PC).

  • Issues uninstalling Palm Desktop software (v. 4.2.1)

I am having issues uninstalling the Palm desktop software (v. 4.2.1) from my computer and Palm Support is no longer able to assist me, claiming the problem is too complex and OS-related.
Basically, I wasn't able to remove the software using the built-in uninstall feature so I was told to attempt a manual deletion of all Palm-related files in Terminal. After doing a search for these files via Spotlight, I was given the following directions:
    >> On the Terminal application.
    Type rm.
Press Space bar on the USB keyboard.
Drag the undeleted files to the terminal.
    Press Enter.
Check if the file is deleted. If not, just click anywhere on the desktop and after a few seconds check if the file is deleted.
This method was mostly successful and I was able to remove most of the files that I wasn't otherwise able to from trash. However, several files still remain:
1 - In an original folder labeled 'Palm 00-08-43', there are two applications that cannot be deleted: 'Palm Support' and 'Palm Desktop'. Both seem to be applications based on their generic icon; 'Palm Desktop' indeed opens up as the Palm Desktop application (v. 4.2.1) but the Palm Support file
cannot be opened because it may be "damaged or incomplete".
2 - In an original folder labeled 'Palm', there is an unidentified 'Palm Desktop' file (4.4MB) that cannot be deleted in Terminal either. (By "unidentified" I mean, no default application is specified to open the document.)
3 - Also, when searching for Palm-related files via Spotlight, I get a result for an application 'Palm Desktop Background' whose file path is associated with the unidentified and problematic 'Palm Desktop' file mentioned above in (2). The file path is as follows: Palm>Palm Desktop>Contents>Resources>Palm Desktop Background.
None of these files (whether individually or their folders) can be deleted in Terminal for the same reason, which Terminal specifies as "a directory". I even tried creating a folder and dragging that folder with all the corrupt files into the Terminal application but to no avail. Also, I made sure to run the Disk Utility to repair and verify disk permissions during this process.
Can anyone help me figure out why those specific files or "directories" cannot be easily deleted? The problem sounds complicated so if anyone knows where I might be able to seek assistance, that would be helpful too. Thanks!

  • Problem: Categories I've created under "MEMOS" on my Palm Desktop Software keep disappearing.....

    Hi,
I just posted about having just re-installed a verstion of Palm Desktop Software yesterday to see if it would alleviate the following problem, but right after my consultant left, it happened again, which it does infrequently and I don't understand it.
First, I use this software to keep track of mostly everything; addresses; Things to Do, Datebook, etc.  I also use it to write down important information.  I create an alpha category under the menu "new memo" such as Banking, or Accounts, or Passwords, or Computer Stuff, Doctors, etc.  A few days ago, I created one called Important Info which involves a legal log and I just started writing in it.  It was fine for 2 days.  Yesterday, I made an addition to it.  Then I wrote & sent a few E-mails, and later re-opened Palm and it wasn't there.  This has happened in the past where all my Computer Info disappeared or another category altho not often and I can't understand where it went or why?  I do back up and managed to copy & paste the info I had into a newly created category, ie. I could look in a backup I did 2 days ago to see if I can retrieve any info, but I want to do this with my consultant over the phone because, whenever my Palm Desktop Software completely disappears, I freak out@!! even tho she explained why and what I had to do.  But I don't trust myself, so i make any changes with her over the phone.
But, mainly, I just wonder WHY various categories have disappeared when I didn't do anything to change anything, and where it went to.  it's really a puzzle to me.  If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer an some possibilities as to why things just disappear.  Most of the time, I don't shut down my Mac, even though I should.  But I do on & off especially when it's slow of some function is not working.  Sometimes restarting it resolves the issue, not sure why.  But I'm sure at times I do leave applications open before I shut down, altho most of the time, I quit each application before doing so.  Sometimes not.  So that's a possibility.
I assume the file-save function for Palm is a  menu choice and I will do that each time I add any data on my Palm desktop, just to be sure.
I don't understand yet how to Export data from Palm Desktop to a folder on the desktop - but I will read the article to be sure.  Noone seems to understand why this just happens with a category gone missing from my MEMOS feature.
Thank you for your useful information.

  • Is my HD Dead? Reformat Disk Utility Error: secure disk erase failed with the error could not open disk.

    Hi,
Fed up with seeing the spinning beach ball I decided to reformat my MacBook Pro...
After backing up everything on an external hard drive I put in the OSX install DVD, restarted the machine and held down 'C'.
I followed the install prcedure, clicking next a few times etc...
I then went into Utilities > Disk Utility. I chose 7-Pass to erase the Macintosh HD and set it off erasing.
I checked the process an hour in and message on screen read:
Secure disk erase failed with the error:
    could not open disk
The internal hard drive no longer exists in the disk utility so I cant retry erasing it.
The only thing that appears in disk utility is the OSX install DVD.
I can't even shut down the mac as everything under the apple tab is greyed out!
I'm guessing this means my hard drive is broken right?
If anyone has any other ideas of what to try I'd really appreciate that.
How do I turn the machine off?
If my hard drive is gone then should I consider getting an SSD drive?
Any recommendations for such a drive would be great.
    Hope you can help!

    Did you partition the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
