Palm handhelds are history, what about PalmOS?

I've joined this forum as a last resort to trying to get some questions answered. Can't seem to get a human being to answer a telephone at Palm (scary, since now Palm is only going to make phones ;^) ). Anyway, I have a customer that has fielded thousands of devices in the oil & gas industry with an Ir window to download data to, you guessed it, Palm devices. I was contacted by them the other day with them wanting to know what 'platform' to now go to, and how to get their application to run on whatever that may be. They were told (since they resell palms to their customers) that handhelds were history. They say they were also told that PalmOS is history. They found that their application would run on the T-3, T-5, E-2, TX and LifeDrive. Not sure why it wouldn't run on others, and I don't have of list of what those that it wouldn't run on is. I guess if it runs a version of Palm OS that supports IrCOMM, then it ought to work.
So, smartphones seem to be the remaining platform... I see the Treo has an Ir port as well as the centro. The Treo runs WindowsMobile (and from what I can 'find out', only WindowsMobile), and the centro runs PalmOS, which as I stated before is supposedly also going away. I imagine the centro now has a limited lifetime to look forward to.
I need to know how to answer my customers concerns. I need to know what smartphone(s) that Palm will make that will talk IrCOMM through an Ir port, and how to 'port' their old PalmOS code to run on whatever smartphone that might be, or, if there would be an emulator available to allow PalmOS apps to run on WindowsMobile, or, if PalmOS will be made available on any of the new smartphones.
I don't have their source code yet, and don't know what development tools were used to write their code, but I beleive that CodeWarrier was mentioned somewhere along the way, if that helps.

Ok I want to start off on a high level and address some of your concerns.

Ok so that was a quick high level answer to your questions. So now I will spend a little time and go into detail on each point.
1. Handhelds (afaik) are not history
You can go to the palm store and still purchase an E2 and a Palm TX. Here is a link to the E2 page to purchase it, and it is currently in stock

Older handhelds T-5, T-3 those can't be purchased directly through Palm. Your sources are correct that they are somewhat history. You can still get support for these products, but purchasing is limited.
2. Treo's are not only Windows Mobile, these also run on Palm OS
There are two types of Treo's ones that run Palm OS and one's that run Windows Mobile. The Palm OS Treo's are typically easily distingushed by a "p" on their name (IE Treo 700p, Treo 755p) there are a few exceptions to this such as the Treo 680 which does run Palm OS. On that same token the windows mobile devices are using distingushed with a "w" on their name (IE Treo 700w, Treo 700wx) same as with the 680 there is some exceptions such as the Treo 750 which does run Windows Mobile.
3. PalmOS is a dying OS, but is not completely history
The PalmOS is an old operating system and Palm is currently working on a brand new OS, WebOS, this is the predecessor of palm os. With that being said when this OS launches Palm isn't just going to stop and no longer support devices still running Palm OS. Instead we have implemented a product lifecycle (you can find more informatin about it here)

So all Centro users are still going to get support through Palm as long as the device still falls within a supported lifecycle stage.
4. PalmOS can run on Windows Mobile with a little help
There is a program called StyleTap that is available. What this program does is allows Palm OS programs to run on a Windows Mobile unit. The program itself is a little pricey, but for those that need this functionality is well worth it. On that same note StyleTap is also wanting to design a program that will run PalmOS apps on the new WebOS when it launches but none of that is final.

ICloud and Apple ID are different, what about Itunes Match??

My apple ID, what I use to purchase apps and songs with, is different than my iCloud ID which I use to synch mail, contacts, etc with.
Now that iTunes Match is live, and I am using it, what is going to happen when I do a synch? Has anyone in my situation tried yet?
Im wondering if, when my phone goes to the cloud to synch, it wont see any music under my iCloud ID and just not synch that, or will it be ok this way? It has worked great up to now, but am worried.
If you are wondering why I dont just try it, well it seems the servers at Apple are once again overloaded and I cant do anything more with iTunes match then what initially synchronized. I get a time out error now. So I thought I would ask the question and try to resolve any potential problems before they happen!

I was in the exact same situation as you. I had an Apple ID I purchased all my songs/movies/shows/apps with, and a completely different one that I used for iCloud. I decided that for iTunes Match, I'd just use my iCloud ID, and it's been great. I never have to use my old account. Whenever my old apps have updates, my iPhone just asks me for my password (it remembers my old email), and the updates download. It's easy and great - you'll be fine. Enjoy iTunes Match!

What are the rules about switching versions?

I thought projects created in iMovie 9 showed up in iMovie 10, but I just tried creating a new project in iMovie 9 this morning and it is not showing up in iMovie 10, even though I see projects from 2013 and before in there.
Also, what are the rules about switching versions? I know iMovie 9 much better, so can I start a project there and finish it in iMovie 10? I would like to gradually learn iMovie 10, but not all at once.
I assume that once a project is edited in iMovie 10, it can't be worked on in iMovie 9 anymore.

You have to update iMovie 9 projects to iMovie 10 from within iMovie 10 before they will appear in iMovie 10 as iMovie 10 uses a completely different project/event file system. After updating you can still work on projects in iMovie 9 but you won't see any changes made in iMovie 10 and you can't transfer them back.
I would have a good look at the iMovie 10 help files first since a lot is changed and some features have been discontinued that might be important to you.
In order to try out iMovie 10 on just one of your iMovie 9 projects, put the folders just for that project in a separate iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folder and hide the project and event folders containing the projects you don't want to update from iMovie 10 by enclosing them in a higher level folder (only projects and events folders in the Movies folder of the boot drive or at the root level of another drive or partition will be visible to iMovie).
I did it this way and I'm glad I didn't try to update evrything at once!

There are no known viruses for OS X. If you have to worry about a website putting some malware on your computer, then you should not visit it any longer. Find a legitimate site.

The Remove Now button removes ALL messages available at the incoming mail server for the account.
To remove an individual message from the server, select the button at the bottom of the mailboxes drawer which has a gear icon.
At the bottom of the menu window that appear, select Get Info.
Select the POP via the Account selection - the account will be already selected if you are accessing a single account with the Mail.app.
Under the Messages On Server tab at Show Messages, All messages on POP server should be selected.
The window below will reveal all messages currently available on the server. You can select an individual message or multiple messages and then the Remove From Server button.

What about the rural areas ???

As we all know BT's Fibre rollout plans keep getting put back and back. The rural areas are suffering and of course Bt announce BT sport free for fibre users (Yes I'm aware that any non fibre users can use the app to watch sport if with broadband) also to top this off they have announced 18 new channels for fibre users only at a cheap cost. My question is what about the little guys ? My exchange has no plans yet for fibre although 2 miles north or south they have fibre. Why should we be penalised for not having it ? I've had Youview for nearly a year now and to be comepletly honest it seems orientated to fibre users only. Does anyone else feel this way or is it just me ?

I took Youview on being told by many different Bt staff i could get the same services as everyone else. Surely when the youview service was sold to me they could have explained there and then certain services were for fibre only. You can transfer your purchases to computer iTunes.
Connect and select iPhone in iTunes under DEVICES, right click and choose Transfer Purchases from ...
BTW, you can alway re-download again for free if it's still available in the app store.

Disable the computer's security software during the download and update. You could have easily found this answer by searching this forum since the question gets asked maybe a dozen times a day.

Audiobooks are currently a one-time only download. If it didn't download correctly then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that audiobook and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

I opened an iPod and noticed all my music got replaced with music I never bought, randon stuff like Rolling Stones, Rhiana, Quinn, Outcast and more, couple of hundreds of songs and a few full albums that I never purchised and never had there before. I looked in iTunes and all the music is gone, replaced with the same random music out of nowhere. All my movies, purchised from iTunes are gone too. Noone touched my computer, noone touched my iPhone, I tunes account has a right name and a purchase history only has stuff that I bought and nothing of this music that I have now. So, how did it got there and what about any copyrights for it? I am confused.

Thanks, that is a resonable guess. I got it figured out. I forgot to add that it was my work computer, and it appears that some of my coworkers got the same little surprice, so we're guessing our admin did something wierd. They (IT) are on vacation so we are waiting for confirmation. I just never saw anything like this before and didn't even know they can do that.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

New Palm Handhelds

Are the three handhelds listed under Palm handhelds Vista compliant? None lists Vista?
I have a Palm Zire 72 and it just does not work well with Vista. It will sync but not for pictures....
I am thinking it is just easier to buy a new one, but it does not sound like any are listed to be Vista compliant. Does anyone know before I go buy one...

One thing about Vista is that it is a relatively new operating system. This version of palm desktop is still in beta and all devices syncing to vista will be considered in beta. There are things that do not work as users expect but overall things should work fine for the most part.

About Authorization and Deauthorization.
Follow the instructions in the above link to deauthorize all and then authorize only the computers that you physically have access to and need authorized.
