Palm IIIxe unable to sync WinxP

Long story short... I'm trying to help a friend of mine sync his Palm IIIxe to his HP WinXP laptop.
Basically, at home everything works fine, but when he tried to setup his Palm in his WinXP laptop if fails to sync.
This is an older Palm so there's no USB, just serial.  I've double checked the serial settings on both the Palm and WinXP and both seem to be setup corrrety.  He's running SP3, and I've downloaded and installed the latest version of palm desktop (he had an older version installed before).
It's been a while since I've delt with Com ports but from what I can see there's no reaon it shouldn't be working.  Any suggestions??  I'm too tired at this point to remember everthing I've done (been trying to get it working for 12 hours now... but I'll let you know if what you suggest is what I've already tried.    ((I did add the hotsync program to the windows firewall exceptions... that's about all i can rember at this point.... I'm baked and going to bed))
Thanks for any tips.

You said at home everything works fine.  Is this HP laptop a business computer?  Does your friend have the local administrator right applied to their account so that Palm Desktop can be installed successfully?

Are you using a USB to serial adapter or does the computer have a serial port?  If you are using an adapter, do you have the latest driver installed on the computer?  Also, what version of Palm Desktop did you install?  Palm Desktop 4.1.x/4.2 or Palm Desktop 6.2?  ACCESS, the company that developed Palm Desktop 6.2 did not include support for the older Palm III series devices.  You will need to download a third-party tool from Pimlico to add support for the Palm III series devices called HotSyncSetup.  You can download it here.
Good luck,

Palm IIIxe with OS 3.5.3 and Z22 with OS Garnet 5.4.9 and Palm Desktop by Access 6.2.2 on a WinXP SP2 box. Z22 appears to sync correctly and the IIIxe SAYS it's syncing but the Palm desktop account is blank.
I think I need to roll back to an earlier version of Palm desktop, e.g. 4.14. If so, can I first uninstall 6.2.2?
The Palm support website says, "Do not un-install previous versions of Palm Desktop. If you have an existing version of Palm Desktop on your computer, leave it as-is, and install this version on top of it."
    Thanks for any help.

Your Palm IIIxe wont show the pims because hotsync 6.2.2 only allows the newer pim format. There is a free addon application from Pimlico called PalmHotsyncSetup that may allow you to sync with it.  PalmHotsyncSetup

  • Palm m505 Unable to Sync on Sony VAIO FS920 Running Palm OS 4.1

I have been unable to sync my Palm Vx running Palm 4.1 since I've had my laptop and I running Palm Desktop 4.1.4.  I have contacted Palm Support multiple times regarding this issue and sited an article that I found on their site indicating that this is a hardware related issue from Palm.  They claim they are sending me a "reset" card by I have yet to receive anything from them in the last 4 months.
Can anyone tell me if there is another way I can get my data off of my Palm Vx before I throw it out the window?  Any suggestions of how I can resolve this sync issue?  Here's the story from the Palm website.....
New cradles offer enhanced ESD protection.
A small percentage of our m500 and m505 handheld users have reported synchronization issues - they are unable to perform the HotSync® function. The issue is electrostatic discharge (ESD).
Here's what happens: you sometimes build up excess static electricity (hair stands on end, clothes cling, you get a shock when you slide across your car seat), and if it isn't dissipated into, say, a door knob or metal cabinet, then it's possible that at the time you place the handheld into the cradle, a discharge of static electricity can occur, which in some situations can scramble the synchronization software. When this happens, neither the handheld nor the cradle is damaged, but the synchronization software needs to be reset by Palm.
Palm handhelds and HotSync cradles meet CE standards (8KV) for protection against electrostatic discharge. The newly designed “E” and “H” cradles include enhanced static electricity buffers. You can get one free if you own a Palm m500 or m505 handheld that did not ship with an enhanced cradle. Please contact Palm Technical support for additional information. Please have your Palm m500 or m505 serial number available.

  • Palm TX unable to sync

All of a sudden my Palm Desktop lost all it's data except Media (photos).  There are no error messages.  Additionally, it will not properly Sync.  Again, there no error messages.  I have tried to Sync several times using my Palm TX as the updater.  I have set the HotSync Manager to "Handheld Overwrites Desktop"; when the Sync window comes up I can see the communication occurring between the handheld and the desktop (they are talking to each other); the Sync concludes in normal fashion, but the desktop "Date", "Address", "To Do", and "Memo" fail to populate.  Only the "Media" has any data, and I'm not sure the desktop is getting that information from the handheld.  I have used DbFixIt2 to cleanup the handheld, but to no avail.  I have uninstalled the desktop software, downloaded the newest desktop software from HP, reloaded it and tried to Sync, again to no avail.  I am at my wits end.
(Particulars are:  Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1; 32 bit Operating System; 8 GB memory)
    This question was solved.

It is absolutely unbelievable, but it worked!  I cleaned the contacts on the handheld with a pencil eraser and then with an alcohol soaked Q-Tip.  Also, I cleaned the HotSync Cable contacts in the same manner.  I then perform a HotSync.  The result was terrible, but the desktop software did populate.  It was a mess.  The desktop information was all over the place, it was scrambled and appointment dates were in the wrong years and months, etc.  And because I performed a “Synchronize” instead of a “Handheld overwrites Desktop” the handheld was also corrupted.  Fortunately, I had a good backup of the handheld, which I accomplished using NVBackup.  I restored the handheld from the backup, and it corrected.  Then, I reconfigured the HotSync to “Handheld overwrites Desktop”, performed another HotSync and magic occurred; the desktop corrected.  Thank you, Jesus!  And thank you, WyreNut.
This ordeal is very baffling to me and very scary for me.  Baffling because I used the desktop software as usual the previous day and it worked as normal.  I opened it the next day, and there was nothing; it was totally devoid of any data, except for “Media”; that was very, very scary because I so heavily depend on the calendar and address book.
Unfortunately, the Palm platform and products, especially my Palm TX, are very much dated, if not obsolete.  I have been hesitant to change devices and platforms, because I like not having all my eggs in one basket i.e. in my cell phone.  Further, I don’t know how I would easily migrate all my data to a new platform; however, I fear that in the very near future I must do just that.  Are there any suggestions on devices, platforms and/or easy migration?

  • Hot Sync addressbook from PC to Palm IIIxe

After purchasing a PC without a serial port, I installed a card and plugged the handheld in. I tried to Hotsync the device however I got an error message that the program was unable to open the Address book data base. Clicking ok on that message, another popped up telling me that there was an error opening the contact database and a new empty database was created and the original database file was renamed to C:\Program Files\Palm\username\address.002.dat.
Everytime I try to hotsync, I get the same messages and it keeps creating a new sequential numbered file. Any clue what's happening here and how I can fix it? The contact Db is in the PC and I've backed it up on a disk just in case. I'm using WinXP Pro and I didn't have this problem before.
    I'm clueless here....please help!

Do you have the current data on the handheld?
What version of palm desktop are you using? Go to help-about in palm desktop for the version.
Do you get this error when you click on Palm desktop to open the program or only when you try a hotsync?
With Palm desktop closed, try renaming the address folder in the username folder to address.old. If you see a contacts folder, rename it to .old also. Open Palm desktop and see if you get the same message. If you don't get the message and have the data on the handheld, change the conduits to handheld overwrites desktop and sync.

  • Hot Syncing Desktop 4.1.4 to an ancient Palm IIIxe

I've lost my Tungsten E2 which I had used as backup and portability for my Palm Desktop v4.1.4.  I still have an old Palm handheld IIIxe which I'd like to once again press into service for this purpose. Palm Live Chat support respectfully told me this could be done, but of course wouldn't provide support for this dinosaur of devices. Would someone be able to guide me on how to make this conversion so I don't lose my data in the process? Thanks.

Actually, I just used unix commands to compare addressbook and memopad csv files from the Palm Desktop accounts for the Vx and the Clie. This convinces me that addressbook and memopad got properly migrated from Vx to Clie.  Unfortunately, exporting to csv is not an option for the datebook app, and the dba files contain differences in the nontext characters between the Vx and the Clie.  Is there a way to compare datebooks?
    Thanks.

Try using directions in Palm Support Knoweldge Library

I went to the Palm Support Knowledge Library at the website this forum is part of. I used Solution ID 38852 and followed the directions. I'm not sure exactly what worked, since I had trouble finding Login Items in the Preferences (#6), but did what it said as much as I could (deleted some of the Transport Monitors). I restarted the laptop and Hotsynced and, voila, it now works. Good luck.

  • USB Hotsync Cable for Palm IIIxe

If the cradle has the serial connection you can use a serial to USB adaptor that will allow you to sync your device. They are very common items. Here is a search I did in Google: http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CHMI_enUS302US342&aq=0&oq=serial+to+usb+adaptor&sourceid=chrome&...
Almost any electronics store or computer store should have them.

  • My Palm IIIxe crashed and I can't find my data...

I have a Palm IIIxe (yes, it's old) but it works or worked for me.  I don't use it too often, maybe twice a month.  When I tried to use it I noticed nothing happened when I turned it on.  Dead Batteries.  When I replaced the batteries I had no data.  No problem, I'll just sync it to my computer (windows XP).  After I went through the motions of sync.  I got lots of errors and there was still no data on my handheld.  I tried to open the Palm on my desktop, but got "Error:  Failed to open Address Data Base".  All I could do is click OK and the palm SW closed and sent an error report to Microsoft....  What do I do now, I have no access to my data.  I still have the Desktop software v3.1 that came with the device and the handbook.  I am temped to uninstall the SW and reinstall, but I don't want to loose all my data.  Can anyone help???

check the username assigned to the device.
open hotsync icon in the device and check the upper right hand corner.
    remember that username.
warning: this process is very critical to your part as you no longer have information/data in your device.
you can opt to disregard this however, if you can perfectly execute this one there is a possibility that you can still recover your data.
you can also reopen the palm desktop software.
    saving your username folder/data:
    1. right click palm desktop icon and choose properties
    2. click on find target button to open the palm folder
    3. locate the username folder (similar or same to what you assigned to the device)
    4. once you are able to identify the username folder, right click on that folder
    5. choose copy and paste it to your desktop (you are now have a backup of your data in the desktop)
    6. after copying is done, right click again the username folder and rename it to username-old
    7. close everything in the PC
    8. verify the username you copied in the desktop if it is there
    9. attempt to open the palm desktop software
once the palm desktop is open then you are able to eliminate the corrupted files.
you can then check the contents of the username folder you saved in the desktop if the files in each folder have significant file sizes.
this is for you to make sure that you have significant data to import.
importing files from the saved username to the palm desktop:
    1. open palm desktop
    2. click or choose datebook
    3. click file and choose import
    4. in the look in drop down menu, locate the username folder you save in the desktop and open it
    5. locate the datebook folder and open it
    6. usually you will not see any files on it so in the filename field, type *.* to reveal all the files
    7. locate the file datebook.dat or sometimes if the file extensions are not shown it will just show datebook
    8. highlight that file and choose import
    9. importation will then follow
    10. check the files that you have imported
repeat the steps given on the other conduits like addresbook, todo list and memopad.

I currently sync my Palm Centro (Verizon) to my Desktop Computer running Windows XP and Palm Desktop 6.2.2 with no problem. I am trying to move everything to an HP Notebook running Vista Business 32 bit. I disabled Norton Internet Security and loaded Palm 6.2.2 on the notebook but was unable to sync. Error message on the Palm said “The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again”. On the notebook the Palm handheld device driver has a “?” besides it. I tried doing a clean uninstall and reloaded Palm Desktop 6.2.2, but it still gives me the same error message. I tried looking for an updated device driver, uninstalling and reinstalling the device driver didn’t help either. Palm Support was unable to fix the problem. I then tried restoring the notebook to the factory condition, and reinstalled Palm Desktop; same error message; Palm device driver still has a “?”. I called HP Tech support. They had me update the Bios and update Vista to Service Pack 2. Still has the same problem. This is driving me crazy! Any ideas???
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

The system doesn't allow me to browse to PalmUSBD.inf or any other specific file name. It only allows me to browse to the subfolder USB_Driver. When I tried to key in the file name C:\Program Files\Palm\USB_Driver\PalmUSBD.inf and click next I'm told "The location you specified does not exist or cannot be reached."
I tried uninstalling the driver, then reconnecting to another USB port; driver seemed to install successfully, but then still has "?" and doesn't work. I am not using a USB Hub.

Because the Z22 has neither Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (and has no way to add either, because it lacks an expansion card slot), the only way to Hotsync your Z22 to a Vista 64-bit computer is with Infrared (IR) beaming.  That means you will need to buy an IR adapter for your computer.  I don't have direct experience in making it work, but this thread discusses how:

    Hi,

Are you asking for a wireless sync or a cable sync? If its a wireless sync to the exchange server, this device cannot do that. A cable sync you will need to outlook conduits from the CD. If you do that have the CD then you need pocket mirror from www.chapura.com

  • Palm IIIxe - Fatal Alert after HotSync; [Reset] soft button doesn't; Paper Clip just returns Fatal Alert

I'd done a HotSync and left Palm in cradle; went to work without it so called wife to have her check something for me.   She reported a MEMORY EXCEPTION error, which I've seen before, so I told her hit the soft [Reset] button offered.
She did, and it came back after the "Palm Powered" splash screen with a Fatal Alert and another soft [Reset] button.   No amount of clicking this button will reset it.
Using the paper clip reset, I loop thru the splash screen and another Fatal Alert.   Beyond that, nothing.
Here at the office, desperately needed to see some data which was on the Palm, so brought up the Palm Desktop (v4.1.0).   And was confronted with a Windows XP exception -- do you want to send an error report?     Downloaded and installed v4.1.4 from the website and Palm Desktop works again.
Makes me wonder if there's some kind of date/time issue, that would have triggerd sometime between 11/28 and 11/30, that affected both Palm Desktop v4.1.0 AND the Palm OS that I'd been running on Palm IIIxe unit (the most recent version that WOULD run on IIIxe,
insofar as far as I can tell now, with not being able to get past this Fatal Alert).
Looked for the various cited tinyurl links in this forum that point to reset documentation (hoping for the least destructive; since my last backups would have been done likely in the hotsync that was aborted), yet those links all apparently point to hosts that cannot be reached.
I LOVE my IIIxe and do NOT want to have to upgrade hardware and software for something I have to cradle and sync in order to recharge.  Give me a machine that I can replace the batteries at any 7-Eleven or Wal-Mart no matter where I travel.
    Post relates to: Palm IIIxe

Not sure what caused this but with the fatal alert message you typically need to hard reset the handheld.
If you had Palm desktop open while Windows, virus software or any apps that do updates did an update and caused the error.
Are you still getting the fatal alert message? You need to hard reset the handheld if you are.
Click on the following link to the kb.palm.com webpage for the article regarding reset procedures.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=887
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. Click on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
Make sure you select all for the range in the export window.
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive.
Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
