Palm life drive dead?

I'm having trouble with my palm lifedrive. I turned it on this morning and all I get is the Palmone screen and I'm unable to do anything. I tried a hard and soft rest. No luck. Just the same screen and a scratchy noise. Is my palm dead. What can I do? How can I replace it?

When you did the hard reset did you get the erase all data message?
Have you tried a warm reset to see if a 3rd party app. or corruption on the device may be causing the issue?

  • Palm Life Drive

I heard the Life Drive will be discontinued? Is that true? I was at Staples when I was told this. Is a better version coming out or were there flaws in the Life Drive?
    Thanks!

Does Palm realize the problems with the life drive.  I have always thought of the palm company as being very reliable but my palm life drive is not turning on though the light says its okay.  I would like some one to email me if possible what should I do with it.  Itdidn't make any noise.  It just wont turn oin.  The green light is showing me that it is charged but it still won;t turn on.  I need a fast answer please email me what I can do next.  Thank you.  I am new to the forum.
The LifeDrive was discontinued many years ago...  It was a great device, but suffered from the fragility of the 4gig Hard Drive inside it.
Repairs can be found at usedpdaparts.com or pdaparts.com.   Usedpdaparts.com offers a "LifeFlash" upgrade that removes the broken Hard Drive, and replaces it with a Compact Flash card slot that has a 4gig card inside it.  PalmOS is reloaded on it, and you end up with a reliable device!

  • Palm Life Drive Completely Dead

I'm reading a lot of posts in a large number of places.  Many people indicating complete dissatisfaction with the Life Drive.  I've used my since my wife got it for me a few years ago at about $500.00.  Mine is completely DEAD.  Will not do anything, will not turn on.  Nothing.  I'm wondering, since there are a lot of post about this is there anyone who has gotten theirs repaired and if so where did they go to get it repaired.  I hate to throw away $500 but I'm wondering if it's worth it.  Many people has expressed complete disatisfaction with dealing with Palm.  Does anyone make a unit that is comparable to the Life Drive that I might look into?

One alternative to the Tasks application is Outline Tracker which has knobs to open items with content text, and multiple projects, which should fill your need for multiple to-do lists.   It does not currently have priorities, though.

  • Palm T/X dead or dying

I purchased my t/x 13 to 14 months ago I've only used it since the first of August because I purchased a life-drive right after that.  This started Weaknesses 01-Oct-08 all day it would not come on with any kind of reset soft or hard. I plugged  in the charger yesterday morning and it came on the icons you could from the top to half way down and the reset of the screen was like a light blue and red curtain. I pressed the reset button it went black it stayed like that the rest of the day. I tried recharging again this morning the same as yesterday half the screen was good the rest was not, so I tried a hard reset went black and no matter what I do it stays that way, but in the morning it will probably do what its done for the last two. What could this be or what do I need to purchase as in hardware to fix it?
    thank you for any help

The digitizer is typically directly on top of the display screen. They are 2 different parts.

  • Life Drive and Vista

Is there any fix so that I can sync my Life Drive through Vista with programs that have regular updates?  Does anyone know if Palm plans to provide Vista friendly Life Drive manager?
I'm very frustrated at this point because this issue has limited the usefulness of my Life Drive for my professional life.  I need to get a new phone very soon and wonder if I shouldn't breakdown and get a Smartphone.  I like having a small regular phone for all my lives and the Life Drive for professional time.  Thoughts?
    Thank you for your assistance.

Hello horselady and welcome to the Palm forums.
Is there any fix so that I can sync my Life Drive through Vista with programs that have regular updates?
Palm Desktop 4.1.4e should work, for the most part, on Windows Vista.  You can install Palm Desktop 6.2 on a Vista computer and the LifeDrive will sync with it, however, ACCESS has removed some features that were previously available in the older Palm editions of Palm Desktop.  (Long story short, Palm no longer owns the rights to the Palm OS and the HotSync Manager.)
The latest Windows Vista information can be found here.
Does anyone know if Palm plans to provide Vista friendly Life Drive manager?
No, there will be no Vista compatible version of the Palm LifeDrive Manager application.  If you want to work with the files on the "LifeDrive" volume, you will need to put the LifeDrive in Drive Mode to access the files.

  • Life Drive failure

During charging, all of sudden, my Life Drive turned the reboot sequence, but never actually rebooted. I tried hard reboot, risking to loose installed components, but the screen just froze at the message. It also heated up unusually, but failed to perform anything. After a while it turned off or the battery just exhausted. After plugging it in external power supply, the flash screen pa1m one Life Drive came up, but the device neither reboot nor accepted any commands. Anybody with similar experience? If anybody knows how to rectify the problem, I would be very grateful.

When you have the lifedrive plugged in to the power supply, try a hard reset again to see if you can recover the handheld.

  • Life drive trouble

I had a Palm One Life Drive given to me by my mother and she said she could not get it to turn on. I got it to turn on but the only thing that shows up is the start up screen and then it goes black and repeats it. This is all it will do. My computer has tried to sync with it and I get this message: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it."
Is it totally broken or is there hope? I'm not attached to it or anything but it would be cool to play with or let my kids play with it.

Hi landzgirl, the LifeDrive  had a fragile tiny harddrive in it that was prone to failure after time.
This may be the case with you device.
You can try a Hard Reset as a last resort to revive it:
To perform a Hard Reset: (Palm Knowledgebase article #887)
    http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/887_en.html
While pressing and holding the Power button down, tap and release the Reset button in back and continue to hold the Power button down. When the grey Palm logo appears, you can release the Power button.
You should now see the warning page in about 5 languages. Press the UP direction on the 5-way pad to complete the task. Your Palm will reset itself several times as it re-installs the original programs and erases all your previous data.
There are websites that will repair a LifeDrive.  Directfix.com is one, google for others.
EDIT:  Just realized my touchpad changed LifeDrive to LifeTime!  :/

I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any help

In Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?

  • Hard Drive Dead? Help!

Hi, so I recently bought an enclosure for my old HD that died out on me, I suppose? My mac was asleep, then I pressed any button on the computer to wake it up, then I clicked on Mail right away, and it froze for a while.. so I held the power down to restart it. When it restarted, it gave me a white screen with a folder with a question mark on it. I was told my HD was bad. So I changed it, now my mac is up and running. BUT... i need my old files from my old HD. I bought an enclosure, plugged and played.. nothing comes up. How can I get my old files? Please help!!!!

This one has an outside chance of working. But if it doesn't work, _be warned_, might make the data completely unrecoverable through a professional data rescue service. I've only heard about this and never done it myself. You put it in the freezer. Not sure why this is supposed to work, but it might.
_Much safer to try Data Rescue first. I would try this only as a last resort._
For others, try googling hard drive dead freezer and see what you think.
    http://hacknmod.com/hack/how-to-recover-dead-hard-drive-data/
I can tell you from experience that it in fact DOES work…most of the time. I have managed to recover data 3 times from dead drives, and have also not managed to recover data about the same amount of time. So, it is fair to say that for me, it worked 50% of the time.
I placed the drive in two zip lock bags expelling as much as air as possible before zip locking both bags. I left it in the freezer for approx. 12 hours with no luck, but after freezing it for extended periods of time, it worked like a charm. It is also important to note that this is generally a one shot deal, if it works, you’re in luck, but you must get as much data as possible from the drive because once it dies, it is rare that you will gain access a second time.
The 3 times I did manage to get the data back, I exhumed only the data that I absolutely required. In other words, only the data I created or files that I placed on the drive.
I too, found it hard to believe when I first heard it, but after losing 3 years of tax returns I HAD to try it. Fortunately for me, it worked like a charm.

  • Is Hard Drive Dead???

    Hello,
Thanks for anyone that posts and helps me out here. These forums help alot.
I have iMac G5 Isight (model before intel) 200GB HD 2.5GB Ram.
Stopped working and saw blue screen with question mark the other day. uh oh.
    Attempted restart -> not solved
attempted safe mode -> didnt work just shut down
attempted single user mode (fsck) -> did not work (catalog file I/O error invalid node structure)
attempted Disk Utilities off startup disk -> not work (failure on exit error keys out of order)
    sighed.
bought Disk Warrior (as this helped others w similar issues)
Attempted DW (fingers crossed) -> message said error "speed reduced by disk malfunction" also could not replace original directory b/c of disk malfunction. Comparison could not be performed and recommended backup and to look at preview.
everything critical is backed up. no problem.
everything non critical I dont care about.
    So now, the question is...
    Is my hard drive dead?
If so, should I reformat it or is it "permanently wounded" and will have PTSD and cause further problems down the road.
Or, should I bite the bullet and get a brand new Hard Drive??
    thanks so much !!!!
    mike

    Ok.
now that I have some time going to do erase and install.
I suppose info is on the apple support website for the exact steps.
I remember reading somewhere to do settings all to zero?
I was running Tiger latest version.
I have a brand new Leopard disks here that I was going to upgrade to before all this happened.
Should I just boot off the new Leopard disks?
    Or
Should I boot off Tiger and then upgrade everything afterwards?
    thanks again

  • Folder with ? at startup - is my hard drive dead?

At startup I got a folder with a question mark.
I started up from MacOS 10.5 DVD, opened disk utility and my hard drive was not shown in the available volumes.
In System Profiler, under serial-ATA, it says "There was an error while scanning for Serial-ATA devices.
Tried to reset the PRAM, it did't help.
Is my hard drive dead, or is there something else for me to try?
