Palm PDA reliability

My TX, purchased less than a year ago, already has a malfunctioning power switch, and the touchscreen will not stay calibrated. After a significant amount of time wandering around the website, I reached a customer support rep by telephone to ask if the product was still under warranty (couldn't find warranty terms on the website) or, if not, if there was a program to purchase a replacement at a discount, since the product was less than a year old. Initially, I was offered tech support for $15. I explained I wasn't interested in paying $15 for a lengthy session that was likely to yield the result that the problem is hardware-based and requires repair or replacement. At that point, the representative said if he could establish that the hardware was broken over the phone, they would fix it for free. Unfortunately, that required a hard reset, and I am at work and relying on the medical information software, so a hard reset was not practical until I could do it at home, with access to my computer where the data is backed up.
This post is basically a message to Palm corporate offices: My first Palm, a IIIxe, was bulletproof, with an intuitive user interface, and was extraordinarily helpful as a way to manage patient information and medical reference information. The only reason I retired it is because of the more extensive RAM requireements of my drug information software. Each subsequent PDA has been a disappointment: glitchy, with unreliable touchscreen calibration, and Graffiti 2 is a major de-evolution in what I personally considered one of Palm's most valuable features.
I recognize that Palm feels it has to compete with flashier gadgets, but the core functionality of the PDA is what I needed in the first place: a digital day-runner that was searchable, and that I could store clinical information on that I needed in my job. Web access is nice, but not necessary. I have a perfectly good cell phone with a cell provider that is reliable and economical so don't wish to bother with a new one. All I want is a reliable PDA. While it must be a small market, it nonetheless is extremely helpful to medical providers -- so long as the product is reliable. Now that it's not, I will probably switch to an iTouch, since they have made drug reference software available, and seem to have a reputation for being more stable.
I apologise if I am violating the content rules of this forum, but there doesn't seem to be a way to contact Palm itself. It's too bad; their early products were wonderful.
Post relates to: Palm TX

I understand your gripe, but the fact that hardware failures happen is a given, even with the best-made products.  I have had two TXes for several years (with a third in the box ready to be deployed if and whenever needed).  I have had digitizer issues with both of them, but never a power button problem.  Both of them are currently going strong, with no hardware issues.
In just about all warranty repair calls, Palm's telephone agents will ask you do to a Hard Reset to confirm to themselves (and to you) that there is a hardware issue going on.  So just make the call from home when you can.  An alternative is to use a SD card-based backup tool such as the free NVBackup and a SD card.  Back up the entire contents of the TX's internal memory onto a card...you can even set it to do an automatic backup every night while you sleep.  Then, you can do a Hard Reset any time, and within minutes you can restore the entire contents of your TX's memory directly from the card, without needing to Hotsync with your PC.
If the drug reference info is all you need, maybe the iPod Touch would fill the gap.  But glitches *do* happen with Apple products as well, and it has no SD card option from which you can recover from a data loss if you are away from your desktop.  I also have an iPod Touch (8 GB model received for free when we bought my kid's MacBook last summer).  It has at least once required me to reset and reload everything from my desktop.  Fortunately, since it is not a serious contender to substitute for my TX as a PDA, I don't really use it for much other than for playing around with.  My youngest son also has an iPod Touch...a larger one than mine.  He has reset his numerous times.  It is a cool gadget, but it isn't a Palm, it will not guarantee you trouble-free use, it is nowhere near as versatile a PDA as a Palm, and if it glitches out on you while you are away from your desktop, you are hosed.
Lastly, if you feel the need to communicate with Palm's corporate offices, there is a Contact Us link right at the top of every page of these Forums.

  • How to load a large image for display on the Palm PDA

    Hello:
I have a large image I would like to display on LV for Palm PDA. The documentation states there should be a 64K chunk limitation for VIs to compile on the Palm. Therefore, I decided to break this image up into 2D arrays of less than 64K per subVI. My 3.2 Meg image therefore has about 224 2D array subVIs. My motivation is to somehow use the build array function (with concatenate inputs) to reconstruct the image at runtime. I can compile each 2D array subVI as a test, but my attempt to reassemble and compile is futile. When I try to use the build array with only 8 of these subVIs in a top level VI the compiler complains its still too big of a VI. Using get info, memory for this top level states total ~2
    3K of memory usage.
So can someone help me with this problem. Is there another way to load this size of an image into memory so I can display it on a picture control?
BTW, this can build on LV for PocketPC.
    Thank you
    Robert

    Hi Robert,
You are correct in that one of the limitations of the Palm OS is that files cannot be larger than 64 KB in size (as stated on page 5-3 of the LabVIEW PDA Module User Manual). The suggested workaround is indeed to have a top-level PDA VI that calls subVIs, and this top-level VI can then have a total file size larger than 64 KB.
My suspicion is that with the picture control on the Palm OS, even if you are breaking up the image into smaller subVIs, the process of building the array to reassemble the picture is still forcing the Palm to allocate memory for each of those 2D array subVIs to place on the top-level VI's picture control
and thus causing the Palm to complain about not having enough memory. The LabVIEW PDA User Manual also states that "There is a total limit of 64 KB on all front panel array data". Thus, when you are trying to use the build array on the top-level VI, the 64 KB limit on front panel array data is still being exceeded -- even with only 8 of these subVIs.
The following KnowledgeBase article KB 38EJRHFQ: How Do I Put a Picture or Image on My LabVIEW PDA for Palm Front Panel? states that as a workaround, you can shrink the size of your image by using 4-bit or 1-bit data instead of the standard 8-bit pixmap representation.
This is really just a limitation of the Palm OS and the fact that there is simply no way of displaying that much front panel information for your picture. Either way, you would need to build up the array of pixels for your bitmap, and for a 3.2 MB image, I don
't believe there is any way for the Palm OS PDA to display the image in its entire at once.
    Sorry about that...

  • What palm PDA-only items work with Windows Vista?

I'm looking to purchase a Palm PDA-only (no phone please), but I have Windows Vista. Which models actually DO work with Vista?
    Post relates to: Tungsten C

Any device should work with Windows Vista 32 bit. If you have windows 64 bit then any device with bluetooth will work via bluetooth, no device will work via cable.

  • How does one read memo pad items in Palm PDA?

I would like to read a memopad text file into my LabVIEW Palm PDA compiled program. I would think that this would be easy?

The source code of the Memo application is shipped with CodeWarrior.
The location will be something like C:\Program
    Files\Metrowerks\CodeWarrior\(CodeWarrior Examples)\Palm OS 4.0 SDK
    Examples\Memo
I haven't read all the source code,
but it seems that the Memo application creates one database that
contains records that are the memo items.
If you just need to read the texts of a memo item,
    I th
ink you can write a C function that opens the database, gets the
record associated with the memo item, reads the records, and returns a C
    String.
Wrap this C function with a Call Library Node to use it from LVPDA.
I imagine the prototype would be something like
char* GetMemoText(uInt32 index) where index is the index of the memo item.

  • 10.5 won't network with Palm PDA device

Despite enabling SMB file sharing and doing everything else I could think of to continue using my Palm PDA to access and copy files on and from my Imac desktop, I found that my file sharing utility on the Palm (WiFile Pro 2.12) which had worked fine under OS 10.4 simply can' seem to access any more my MAc hard drive. I had been using wi-fi to connect the Palm device into my router for the Mac.
Now when I try to connect I keep getting indications from the Palm device that the MAC file system was closed to my attempts to connect.
QUESTION: Has anyone any advice on a new shareware r other software that will enable current Palm handheld devices to network for file sharing with a desktop Mac using one's existing wi-fi setup in the home environment.

    Hi,
I haven't managed to get smb to work, but I have got an ftp connection through my Airport Express. See my reply to Michael K Murray Re: wifile pro - smb problem.
For transferring files between the two, plain Bluetooth send works.

  • Sync Palm PDA via WiFi?

Has anyone successfully synced their Palm PDA (I have a TX) with their Mac using WiFi? I get them to recognize each other, but when I actually do the sync, it just sits there for a couple minutes and then tells me it couldn't make a connection. I don't understand that, because I have a pretty strong signal from my computer on the PDA, so they are connected, the sync just won't take place.

I have the same problem. Same PDA - Palm T/X, can't connect to my AEBS. When I take the Palm to other hot spots - some times it can connect, sometimes not. Anybody know anything about whether or not this entails changing settings on the Palm and/or the AEBS? Palm has been of absolutely zero help. Any help from Mac folks appreciated.

  • IPod Substitute For a Palm PDA??

I've been using a palm PDA for years (now using a Zire 72) using its calendar, address book, memos, viewing pics, etc., etc. functions and I am able to use the Palm Desktop application with both my powerbook and a PC (and the PC version of Palm Desktop is more sophisticated) to syn and backup the pda. So, my question is if the latest iPODs are a viable substitute for the PDA?

I don't think it could be a true substitute because while you can view info and sync it to your computer, it lacks the capability of adding info on-the-fly. There is really no text input method, nor have any of the hacks seemed to be able to create an expeditious procedure.
So while you may be able to view someone's contact info, if you received new contact info, you'd have to wait until you returned to your computer to enter that information, and then you'd have to sync it back to your iPod.
I would still stick to a separate PDA, if the necessity to add info in the field is important to you. Hope this wasn't too verbose.

  • How do I remove the title bar from a Palm PDA front panel?

On several PDA screens, I need all the real esate I can get. The title bar chews up a lot of it.  Is there any way, in the vi settings or programmatically, that I can remove the title bar?
I've already tried the obvious step of unchecking "window has a title bar" in the window appearance catagory of the vi properties.  No apparent effect is seen.

    Hello,
It sounds like you are referring to the GUI actually on your Palm devices.  I believe on Palm devices all applications have a title bar, and there isn't a way to get rid of it.  My guess is that perhaps this is a feature you can enable/disable as a Palm OS setting, or may simply be the way the Palm has defined its user interface.  If you have your Palm devices handy, check out the display settings to see any has an option to remove the title bars in general.  If you find out either way, definitely repost so the community can find the answer here as well!
    Thank you,

  • Macbook & Palm PDAs

I want to pose a theory and see if any think this is possible or just coincidental. I have twice had trouble with my built-in iSight in my MacBook (a week 26, no RSD or fan problems at all). Now with my camera working again, the only thing I'm doing differently from before is not using my PDA, a Palm Tungsten E synced with USB. So far, no problems at all with the camera since I'm not using my PDA with my MacBook.
My theory is that the Palm conduits that allow you to sync your PDA with iCal and Address Book were what was causing the camera to act up, since it is connected within the MacBook via USB. Does this sound plausible to anyone? Or is anyone out there having a good experience with a USB synced PDA?
MacBook 2.0 Ghz (white) 1 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Did you go back to HotSync from iSync when you installed Snow Leopard? I have been using iSync with my Palm Zire22, which of course will not sync in Snow Leopard. I have tried to return to HotSync, and even though it appears to by syncing, it is not. Any suggestions?

  • Two Palm PDAs and iSync on one account - Synchronization not complete

I have set up two Palm devices with iSync on one account on my computer. It was my understanding that if I do a HotSync on each device with the Mac, all three devices should have the same information. I am finding that this is partially true. If I add information to a card in my contacts database on any device, that flows through. However, if I remove a card from the computer or either device, it does not flow through to the other devices or computer after I do a HotSync on each device.
What can be done to keep all devices fully synchronized?
    iMac (20in, Late 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Changes are pulled from and pushed to various devices in your pool according to a 'plan' maintained by the truth database, and not all changes are necessarily passed around completely in a single session.
You can read this document to get an idea of how the Sync Services framework operates:
    http://developer.apple.com/macosx/syncservices.html
If a second and subsequent synchronization does not transfer the record modifications or deletions, you can reset the truth database by launching iSync, opening the Preferences… dialog, and pressing the Reset Sync History button, then following the instructions which appear and synchronizing once again.

  • Replacement for a Palm PDA?

I just lost my Palm Tungsten E2.  I have all of my contact and schedule info in my Palm Desktop Software, but no handheld device to download it to.  Now I can't find a handheld anywhere that is not a phone that requires either a $30 a month service charge for two years to act as a phone (which I don't need) or for me to pay $400 - $600.  Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear the bad news of your loss.
It is pretty much impossible to find new E2 units anywhere.  However, eBay has a robust market for pre-owned Palm handhelds.  Another place to look is www.directfix.com or www.usedpdaparts.com who sometimes have refurbished units for sale.

  • Looking for a good replacement for the Palm PDA - that can sync w/ ical

Blackberry, using Missing Sync or something similar. Or you get an unlocked iPhone, which is better.

  • Palm O/S PDA long time user Looking for Replacement PDA

Like many others, I still like my Palm PDA M515 (third model I've owned), but it has lost wired sync capability.  I want to stay with a PDA.  So far I have not found anything out there with the combined functionality and ease of use.  Palm has abandoned us (maybe the HP purchase will help since they once had PDAs but not with the nicer Palm O/S).  What is recommended that keeps the nice Palm Desktop or better and the data can be transferred?  If I have to find a "new"/refurbished Palm PDA, what is the most reliable and best option (email / web not necessary but OK).  Thanks for any recommendations.

I think unless you are buying used the PDA is no longer around new except for the HP that uses MS OS.   Once in awhile there is an advert for a NOS TX but that seems to be also getting scarce.

  • "LabVIEW PDA - Palm OS Hardware?"

I'd like to get some feedback on what Palm OS PDA's are being used in conjunction with the LabVIEW PDA software. I've been tasked with creating a very compact application for monitoring a system, and we're interested in doing this through a Palm PDA (I chose Palm simply because I used to write Palm applications a few years ago, and I'm pretty familiar with their system). We have a DAQCard-6062E that is used in a laptop at the moment, but for this application, that's just overkill. I'd like any input from users on the following:
    1. What type of Palm PDA (model number) are you using with the LabVIEW PDA software?
    2. What type of cradle (model number, etc.) that goes with the Palm PDA for a PCMCIA card? Also, where can you get this cradle?
    3. Interface cable preferences? (length, type, etc.)
    Thanks for your input,
    tsc

    Hello –
Palm M-series or Tungsten supports a DAQ device. CEC sells these DAQ devices with a sleeve and you just have to put the Palm device on it. Also, they will provide you with a driver that will allow you to communicate with LabVIEW PDA for Palm.
Go to this link. Click on Data Acquisition, then on pdaDAQ/100.
    Hope this helps.
