Palm Pre and backwards Palm app compatibility? 64 bit OS - Vista or XP Pro -- compatibility -- ?

I am brand new to the board, so please bear with me if these questions have already been addressed elsewhere.
The announcement of the Palm Pre might have just retained me as a Palm loyalist.  I was starting to look at BlackBerries, etc. for my next phone upgrade.  And then along comes the Pre.....which looks to be a Very Good Thing.  However, I have a couple of questions:
1.  Will the Palm Pre be compatible with the apps that I currently have loaded onto my Palm TX?  Will a simple transfer of apps / data from the TX to the Pre be possible?
2. Will I be able to sync the Pre with my Vista 64 bit laptop, or with my XP Pro 64 bit desktop?  Or does the Pre still lack 64 bit compatibility?  (Man, I hope that it will "do" 64 bit........)
To anyone who knows -- thanks.
Post relates to: Palm TX

Thank you for the responses in both cases, smkranz.  It's greatly appreciated.
Yes -- my Palm TX has served me well for a few years.  It's still functioning quite nicely.  However, I'd hate to have to manually re-enter all of the data that's stored in it into another device.  Plus I wouldn't want to give up several of the apps that I have installed on that device.
IMO, in many ways the TX 'anticipated' the Pre -- rotating screen (albeit manually set), and a list of other features.  Heh -- but these days, if a device is six months old -- then it's yesterday's news.  ;-)  The TX is a circa 2005 era device, IIRC.  So it's an ancient historical relic in today's world.  But I still like it.  A lot.  Few electronic devices that I've ever had the pleasure of owning have been as useful to me as the TX has.  That's why I hated the idea of switching brands......but I didn't see much choice, until now.  The Pre looks to be a real shot in the arm for Palm.  And for my continuing to use Palm's devices into the future.  The BlackBerry Strom was a real disappointment.  And I don't like iPhones.  But I don't think that the Pre is going to disappoint.  If the device lives up to its promise: then I think that we'll have a top-notch winner on our hands.  A great replacement for my venerable TX.
Heh -- the first thing that I loved about the TX was the ability to download & read ebooks while traveling.  One TX in the pocket is a lot easier to carry around than a suitcase full of hardback novels.  The Pre looks to take that 'convenience factor' to a whole 'nother level..........
Now......if only I can get the legacy Palm OS apps to work with it, and it syncs up with my 64 bit PC's: then everything will be right with the world.........
Thanks again for the help.

Recently, I've lost the white charger that came with my iPhone 4S, but I still have the USB cable that originally came with it and I was wondering if it's safe to use the USB charger that came with my pervious Palm Pre and HTC EVO. • Site too small on New Palm Pre and Blackberry Pearl

I have a site that is pretty simple. It contains no tables accept for forms and input buttons. And isn't overloaded with CSS. It was orginally designed for keypad devices and has a width of 176px. Everything is spaced by either <p> or <br> tags with no use of <div> tags. The site loos fine on most phones except for the Pre and Pearl. It shows up on the screen probably is no bigger than a 1/8" high in the upper left corner.
Does anybody know what the problem is?

  • Palm Pre and Garmin Nuvi 765T

I have a Garmin Nuvi 765T and am trying to pair the pre with it.  However, the Garmin can see the pre but connection fails.  The garmin attempts, I guess, to use the passkey 1234 but the 2 never connects.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

I also have a Pre and as you mentioned, the Garmin sees the Pre but cannot pair (the pre never asks for pascode (1234) input.  It worked flawlessly on my Samsung Instinct.  The address book was transfered nicely!
Interestingly, I started with a 265WT and it synced with the Pre w/o problems.

  • Can you share purchased apps between a Pre and a Pre 2?

I own a Pre (Bell Mobility) and just got the Pre 2 (Rogers).  I probably intend on keeping both.
Question: can the apps that I purchased through the App Store for the Pre (using the Pre's profile and email address which are obviously different than the one on the Pre 2) be installed on the Pre 2 without having to purchase them again?
    Thank you.
Post relates to: Pre 2 p102una (Rogers)

Hello bwc565 and welcome to the Palm forums.
My understanding of how the Palm App Catalog works is that purchases are tied to your Palm Profile, which is tied to an email address.  It *might* work if you were using the same device and moving a single SIM card between the devices.
However, since you are using two different phone models, and have two separate Palm profiles, I don't think you will be able to move apps from your Pre to your Pre 2 without having to repurchase them.

  • Palm App Catalog "I didn't pay for my copy of Avatar but would like to" help!

OK, so I ended up with Avatar from the App catalog for free(sort of).
The long story short I lost my wallet in the snow storm. So I had to canceled all my lost credit cards last week. When I downloaded Avatar last night I forgot that my palm profile was linked to one of the canceled cards. The game downloaded and plays great. However I received a email from palm (bellow) that the card did not go through, but that was it. I've searched all over palms site can't seem to get any help or contact info. I found a phone number on Palms support web page(but i think it was the palm store help desk number), that did not help.
They told me to call PocketGear. Get this the guy from Palm told me to call Pocketgear. They don't have anything to do with the web os app catalog.
I want to pay for the game but have no idea what to do!

I apparently have the same problem.  I bought an app this morning, forgetting that the credit-card in the app-store had been lost & cancelled a few days ago.
I tried changing the credit card to the replacement card # -- it won't let me until all pending purchases have been cleared.
I tried deleting the card but get the same message.
I also removed the application from my Pre.  It lets me download it again for free.
The most frustrating part is that the App Store has been sending me a message every freakin' 10 minutes since early this morning:

  • HotSincing the Palm Z22 in 64 bit Vista (and Windows 7)

There has been much discussion on not being able to Sync the Z22 under 64-bit Windows Vista or 7, using a USB cable. I have found a solution that so far has worked just fine for me.
    Quoting from the website:
"Create an XP Mode for Windows 7 Home Versions & Vista. One of the cool features in Windows 7 is XP Mode. However, it’s only available for Windows 7 Professional and above, leaving Home Edition and Vista users out of luck. Today we’ll show you how to create your own XP Mode to run on Vista or Windows 7 Home Premium. Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows Vista are not licensed to run the free XP Mode download from Microsoft. However, if you have a legal copy of Windows XP, then you can easily recreate XP Mode with the free VMware Player.  This article will show you how quick and easy it is to get a virtual copy of XP running on any computer, even if it’s running 7 Home Premium or Windows Vista."

  • Updating Palm TX to 32 bit Win 7 Pro from XP: use XP mode? Or Win 7?

I am really good at making fatal errors with technology and my Palm is too critical to risk,  so I bought a 32 bit laptop, with Windows 7 pro and XP mode installed.
I have scoured the forums  but all I can find are problems/solutions with 64 bits (which is what scared me off in the first place of course).
First, should I install in XP mode?  Or will installing in Win 7 in a 32 bit computer go smoothly?
Second, can I safely use my original disc with the 4.2 version of Palm Desktop?
Finally, for my peace of mind, would you kindly check my checklist for errors or omissions or danger zones.
    1) synch the device to Palm desktop
    2) backup to my SD card with NVBackup
    3) Open XP mode  - or do not open XP mode as you recommend
    4) install Palm desktop  (from disc or download as you recommend)
    5) enter the same user name as on the device/ xp computers
    6) change conduits to Handheld overrides desktop
    7) synch with the cable. Make tea. Be calm.
    8) check data on handheld and on desktop for errors.
    9) When somewhat confident all is well, return conduits to synchronize except for Backup which stays as Handheld overrides desktop. (nor sure why, but it is the default I guess.)

  • I updated my ad to iOS 6 and now my App Store app does not work, how can I get it back

I updated my iPad 2 with the latest iOS 6 and now my App Store application does not work right.  The only part that does work is the genius, and the purchased, but I cannot search for any new apps now have the categories come up.  I don't know how else to search for apps, and I don't know how to download this as it was pre installed.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off".

I reset my touch.  Now I don't have mail, and a couple apps that came pre installed.

With iOS 1.1.5 you can't add apps.  To add aps you need iOS 2 or later,  It appears you hve a 1G iPod. See:

It may be that the Mail app did not come with 1.1.5 . A 1G can be updated as far as 3.1.3 that you get here:

  • How can I pre-populate a web app input form with data from a webform in the CRM?

    Scenario:
A customer fills a registration webform. The customers data is stored in BC CRM as usual. This step provides a lead to marketing unit and the team makes a follow up. Upon completion of internal processes. The workflow initiated by this customer filling the registration form is approved.
Th user is sent a 3rd-party notification with a url to enable the user complete the registration process by entering the information into a web app.
    The Issue:
The client is requesting that he doesn't want the the customer to re-enter some of the  information that  has been captured in the registration form again since it will be laborious for the user to do this. He wants the system to store this customer data already in the CRM and pre-fill the web app form so that the user just submit the data, so that the item can be in the appropriate web app as web app item.
Question: Is this possible? Can this be achieved via js. How should I go about it.
    Your assistance will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

For each option you would need to only have a custom text field for that item. This is where the otpion for each gets populated with javasript.
Each option is your own html that is a select with options as web app items. A list layout of your web app items is just a select with text and value of that item.
Your tricky thing is to setup the matrix of rules to define what shows and when. You can do that with data source association between web apps if it is a 1-1 relationship but if it is 1 to many you need to form script matrix to define what happens on each change.
It depends on the details but thats the core of it.

  • How to charge your Palm Centro via 64-bit Windows, with a USB cable

Here is a way to recharge your Palm Centro on your 64-bit Windows computer, through a USB cable.  But first, a few brief explanatory notes...
Note 1:  I have successfully used this method to charge my Palm Centro from my 64-bit Windows 7 computer.  This method probably works for other Palm devices and other 64-bit Windows versions (XP and Vist)...  but I haven't tested this on any other configurations.  Others may feel free to post their successes or failures with their setups.
Note 2:  This method will NOT allow you to HotSync your Palm to the computer via USB.  All it does is let you charge your Palm via USB.  If you need to HotSync your Palm, and you have 64-bit Windows, you have to use Bluetooth or some other method.  To learn how to use Bluetooth to sync, search for "bluetooth sync 64-bit" or something like that on this forum.
Note 3:  If you're wondering why someone would need to use this method - why not just plug the phone into a wall outlet, right? - it's because the Centro's charging jack can get messed up.  Mine has not worked properly for the last several months
Note 4:  I will not be posting any follow-ups to this message.  This is my first (and only) post here...  I'm posting here because I am very grateful to this forum: It is here that I learned how (and why) to sync my Centro to my computer via Bluetooth, because Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows. This is my way of saying "thank you"!  I'm not trying to be harsh by not following up...  it's just that I won't be checking this thread, and I don't want anyone to have bad feelings if they ask questions and I don't respond.  I'll be as thorough as I can in this one posting, though.
Note 5:  I cannot claim credit for actually discovering this solution.  I found it after HOURS of looking online... it was on some obscure website.  Unfortunately, I can't remember where I found the original solution, so I can't credit the discoverer here.  However, I have done my best to provide much more detailed instructions here.
Note 6:  Lastly, Palm should support 64-bit Windows.  Period.  Some of you may say, "It's not Palm's fault - the company that makes the Palm OS is Access, and it's Access's fault for not supporting 64-bit Windows."  Well, this may be true, but Access has stated that Palm has not requested a 64-bit driver.  (In fact, you can call Access and ask them directly.)  And if Palm doesn't ask (and pay) for it, Access sure isn't going to create one on its own.  I used to LOVE Palm devices...  I've used Palms for 12 years now, and for most of that time, I heartily recommended Palms to all my friends.  But, between this problem and the other problems I've had with my current Centro and my previous Treo, I'm done with Palm.  No more for me.
OK, here's how to charge your Palm (finally!)
    1)  If you haven't done so already, install the latest version of Palm Desktop / HotSync on your computer.  You can get this at palm.com, under the "support" section.  (Actually, I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I already had done this.)
    2)  As you're installing the software on your computer, toward the end of the process, do not actually sync your Palm to your computer.  Just cancel or whatever you have to do to avoid that step.  (Remember, the whole point here is that Palm does not have a driver compatible with 64-bit Windows, so you won't be able to sync via USB.)
    3)  If you don't already have it, get the PocketTunes application (also known as "pTunes") on your Palm device.  If you have to install the software, you may need to do so wirelessly or via a 32-bit Windows computer (because, again, Palm doesn't support 64-bit Windows).
    4)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your computer.  If you are using a desktop, plug into the USB ports on the BACK of your computer.  These ports are directly powered, whereas the ports on the front of your desktop may not be.  You'll want as much juice as possible to charge your Palm.
    5)  Connect the Palm USB cable to your Palm.
    6)  Turn on the Palm device, and open the PocketTunes application on your Palm.
    7)  PocketTunes will try to connect to Windows Media Player (on your desktop).  Tell your desktop to connect to Windows Media Player.  (You can save time by telling your desktop to do this automatically.)  When PocketTunes connects with Windows Media Player, you'll have a power connection via USB.
    8)  PocketTunes will eventually show that it is "Idle" on the Palm.
    9)  To confirm whether the Palm is charging, look for the charging light (on the Centro, it's on the upper left) to turn solid red.  You can also hit the home button on the Palm to see the battery / charging status.  To get the charging working, you may have to exit PocketTunes and come back into it a few times before the charging light comes on.  I have no idea why you have to do this; I just know what I wind up doing sometimes.  You don't have to unplug and replug the phone from the USB cable, or turn the phone off and on.  Just leave PocketTunes and come back to PocketTunes.
    10)  If you exit the PocketTunes application on the Palm, the Palm will still charge - but you'll get the constant and annoying "no driver" noise from Windows.  To avoid that sound, just keep the Palm on PocketTunes while you have the Palm plugged into the USB cable.
    11)  You can close Windows Media Player on the desktop once you have the Palm charging.
    12)  Once you have this set up properly, you can speed up the process by setting the HotSync cable button to PocketTunes - after all, that button no longer needs to be set up to HotSync via USB cable.
When you have everything set up, here's what you would be doing on a regular basis:
-- Plug USB cable (which is already plugged into your computer) into Palm
-- Hit HotSync button on cable --> This starts PocketTunes --> PocketTunes automatically opens Windows Media Player on the computer
-- See if charging light turns solid red --> If not, exit PocketTunes, then hit HotSync button on cable to start PocketTunes again
-- Repeat until charging light turns solid red (success!)
-- Once the Palm is charging, close Windows Media Player on desktop
Best of luck to all who need this!

Why do you want to create your own driver instead of what comes with the device? If you go that route, you need all of the low level USB RAW protocol from the vendor. Did you get that? Yoe are wasting your time if you don't have that. Is the driver from the vendor documented? If it's a USB connection, how does that connection show up in windows device manager?
