Palm Pre Hotspot Issue

Anyone else use a Palm Pre Hotspot on Verizon with their iPad?
I use one and have this problem with both iPad & IPod:
http://www.thedailyoutrage.com/outrages/2010/4/1/palmed.html
Anyone else?

I just spent (another) hour on the phone with Palm and they said because my laptop connects fine, the problem is with Apple and there could be settings on the iPad to adjust.
When I asked (1) Exactly what sort of CLIENT settings could possibly affect ROUTER bandwidth, and (2) How CLIENT requests would have any bearing whatsoever on router performance, he had no answer. But was firm in his commitment.
My answers to these questions are quite logical, but if someone knows better please let me know.
(1) With TCP/IP there are no such settings.
(2) If the router has some sort of QoS settings and the iPod/iPad is making the "wrong" kinds of requests, that could do it.
Other than that, though, how could Apple be throttling customers who use their devices with Palm Pre's? I can see how Palm would do it -- because "iPad" shows up in the router's DHCP table. But does a similar manufacturer ID/Name show up on the client side?
So one test for my theory that Palm is purposefully throttling Apple devices is if there's some way to change how the iPad/iPod identifies itself to the Pre. For example, my Macbook works fine with the Pre Hotspot but with one KEY difference -- its DHCP table ID is its MAC address, NOT a product name.
All very, very frustrating...

Hi- I have the palm pre and was wondering can the mobile hotspot be used as mobile broadband connection?   2) Are there any extra fees associated (other than the data plan) 3) How secure is it?   When traveling does the connect incur roaming fees?

I just got my Palm Pre Plus this week. I can answer some of your questions. I had a pay as you go USB mobile broadband from another company. I used my built in hotspot today, was up and going in less than a minute (set up and connecting). I set a password though because as soon as I connected someone close by connected...my phone beeped and it showed someone connected so I shut it off set the password and reconnected. It runs faster than the pay as you go from the other company did.
As for price, it does not use your data plan, it is separate. Did you get your phone with the special of the mobile hotspot free (5gb limit per month, and charged per mb over that limit? Otherwise I believe they told me it was $30 a month value.
I'm not sure about the roaming charge question, someone should come along with the answer to that. My guess is depending on your plan, I don't get any roaming charges call wise so I don't believe I would with the hotspot but as I said I just got my phone and loving it.

  • Palm Pre Phonebook issue

    Can anyone help?
I have an access # that I dial and then get a dialtone and then dial the LD # I want.
I have set this up in the phonebook as ##########P############
The problem is that I also send and receive text messages to these #s.
So, I have the original # listed as well as a second #.
But the main display only shows the ##########P############
I want it to show both.
Or if anyone knows another way to use an ACCESS #???
    HELP!

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
Which "main display" are you using?
If I open Contacts, and scroll to a contact, tapping on that contact opens their main contact page which should show both numbers. I tested with one contact, two phone numbers. First number 555-555-5555 and second 555-555-5555p1234.
If I use Universal Search and type that contact's name in, then tap on the name from the search results, it also shows 2 phone numbers, also verified with same numbers.
The other way to search for a contact to send an SMS is by opening Messaging, tapping on the bubble in the lower left corner to create a new message, then tapping on the phone book icon on the "TO:" line. Scrolling through this list also shows 2 numbers for our fictitious contact.
If this doesn't help, could you please give us some more information to further assist you?

  • Issues Syncing Google Calendar with Palm Pre 2 WebOs 2.0.1 - Timezones...

I am using Google Calendar to synch my company Outlook to my Palm Pre 2. I note that there are some prior posts on Timezone challenges and have followed the advice provided to no benefit.
All my events are synchronizing  - however any recurring events not local to my timezone are not translating to my local timezone. So events scheduled by colleagues on the US West Coast are entered into my calendar at the time set ignoring the offset to my timezone (8 hours given that I'm in UK).
All events are properly reflected in Google Calendar it's the sync to my Pre which seems to corrupt (or more correctly not translate the time). Interestingly single events created by US colleagues are translated correctly.
Any suggestions as to how I can fix this??

  • THE ULTIMATE PALM PRE POOR SIGNAL ISSUE THREAD

The previous thread I posted can be deleted.  This thread has everything people need to read.  Here is the conversation I just had with Palm about the rampant signal problems everyone is having with their Palm Pre phones (side note, they say they'll be calling me back in a few days.  I'll assume they mean BUSINESS days and i'll post here again tuesday or wednesday if I don't hear from anyone.) :
    1:56 AM Connecting...
1:56 AM Connected. A support representative will be with you shortly.
1:57 AM Support session established with Sabino.
1:57 AM Sabino: Hello David. Thank you for contacting Palm. My name is Sabino.
    1:57 AM David Doria: hi
1:58 AM Sabino: I understand that you are facing issues with weak signals.
1:58 AM Sabino: Am I correct?
1:58 AM David Doria: yes.  weak, and also erractic.  sometimes i will get full bars, and then it will jump to one bar, or none...then be roaming, then Ev, then 1x...all in the SAME spot
1:58 AM Sabino: I’m sorry for any trouble this may have caused.
1:58 AM Sabino: May I know since how long you are facing this issue?
1:59 AM David Doria: as long as i've been using a palm pre, but it is getting worse with time.  i've been using a palm pre since october of last year
2:00 AM Sabino:  Let me know the webOS version on the device and your carrier name.
2:01 AM David Doria: whatever the latest OS is.  1.4.whatever.  and i'm with sprint
2:01 AM Sabino: This seems to be the issue with the network, all the network related issues were taken care by your carrier. I suggest you to contact Sprint. They will be able to fix the issue.
2:01 AM David Doria: um, you said that before i even told you what carrier i'm using
2:01 AM Sabino: I just pulled the details using your phone number.
2:02 AM David Doria: you know that isn't true.  you know it's not sprint
2:02 AM David Doria: i just told you all my other phones with sprint worked fine here and i've only been having problems since i got a palm pre
2:02 AM Sabino: Okay, contact your carrier, they will be able to fix the issue.
2:02 AM David Doria: i've lived here for 4 years and i've had sprint all 4 years
2:02 AM David Doria: no they won't.  i've been contacting them for weeks.  they came out and checked the tower TWICE now.  there's nothing they can do.  it's a hardware issue for palm
2:04 AM David Doria: there are threads all over the internet with hundreds of people complaining about having signal issues ONLY since they bought a palm pre.  now you're telling me it's a sprint issue and you haven't even looked at my phone yet.
2:05 AM Sabino:  What I would like to do, is place your case into a special team that develops technical solutions. They will do further research on it. They would be in touch with you once they have further updates. I cannot commit to a specific callback period, but please know that we are working on your case. May I do that for you?
2:06 AM David Doria: no, because i saw someone in one thread say that palm told them the exact same thing...in 2009
2:06 AM David Doria: so you're basically saying you're forwarding the problem to a generic department to a generic person that i can't know the name of, with no contact info, and that there is no guarantee when they will contact me IF they even will contact me...but i should definitely believe they are working on the problem
2:06 AM Sabino: What exactly you want me to do now?
2:06 AM David Doria: that's ridiculous
2:07 AM David Doria: i want you to tell me why palm is not fixing this problem with the palm pre and is instead telling me it is sprint's problem and then pretending to forward the issue to another department which has already had years to fix the issue
2:08 AM Sabino: As I stated, all the network related issues are taken by carrier.
2:09 AM David Doria: it's a hardware issue
2:10 AM Sabino:  I am going to tell you about our 2 repair options:
    2:10 AM Sabino:
    1.  Repair return: After I create your service repair order, you receive an email with the details on how and where to ship your device for repair. The email also contains info on the follow-up process. After the repair center receives your device, you’ll receive a working device in another 5-7 business days.
    2. :”With the advance exchange option, we ship you a replacement device first, and then you return your defective device to us using a prepaid label. There is a $29.95 fee for this special service but you get a replacement device within 3-5 days.
2:10 AM David Doria: you can't even KNOW it's a network issue without looking at the phone, and all evidence points to hardware since other phones on the same carrier work fine
2:10 AM Sabino: Please go through the above 2 options.
2:10 AM David Doria: this is my SEVENTH palm pre phone, sabino
2:11 AM David Doria: as many others in forums will tell you, they have also replaced their phones MULTIPLE times hoping to fix this issue.  nothing works.  there is SOMETHING physically wrong with the reception capability of the palm pre
2:12 AM David Doria: dude, stop copying and pasting what palm tells you to say and listen to me.  these phones do NOT work.  there is something majorly wrong with them and palm is cheating people out of hundreds of dollars a piece to save themselves the cost of a fix.
2:13 AM Sabino: Please hold on while I transfer the chat to our Supervisor.

2:17 AM David Doria: yes.  i reset my phone...tried NEW phones...updated...updated PRL...etc...tried 2G only, restarting the phone after removing the battery, tried going outside...tried going a few blocks down.
2:17 AM David Doria: i can't even count how many things i have tried.  something is wrong with the palm pre
2:18 AM Saben: Did you try with the webOS doctor?
2:18 AM David Doria: i've tried every software solution i can find
2:19 AM Saben: I am sorry, I just want to know did you run the webOS doctor tool?
2:19 AM David Doria: i've been talking to sprint about this for WEEKS now.  in case you didn't read the conversation, they've already come out to check the local tower twice now
2:20 AM Saben: Okay. It seems that you did not use the webOS doctor tool on the device to check the issue.
2:20 AM David Doria: yes.  the local sprint repair center used the tool when my phone froze during an update
2:20 AM David Doria: yes i did
2:20 AM Saben: Okay. Thank you for the information.
2:20 AM David Doria: you're welcome

Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

So they finally called me back, but I didn't get the call because.....I had no signal.  HAHA
I got their voicemail and called back.  First, they tried telling me YET AGAIN that it was Sprint's problem.  They said that if I call Sprint, they will give me a device to boost signal in my home.  I said, "That's fine, but what do I do when I'm in the rest of the country?"  Then they told me it was a software problem and that I need to run WebOSdoctor to reinstall the operating system.  I told them that this is my 7th Palm Pre.  I told them that Sprint already used the Doctor...like I told the online tech people.  But this guy on the phone wasn't having it.  He told me that he didn't think Sprint was able to do that (so I can, but Sprint can't =/?) and that I should do it just to be sure.  He said if that doesn't work that they will try out a NEW Palm profile and see if that fixes it.  If neither of those works, he basically admitted there are no other options.
I asked him if there is some sort of way they can physically upgrade the antenna system with a better material or placement and he said that Palm has no department able to do that.
I told him about the various threads online like this one, where dozens of people complain about the same  issue.  He told me to just do the WebOSdoctor and call him back.   I asked him if this has fixed signal problems for people previously and he said that he doesn't get to know the end result of his suggestions to customers.   How unprofessional is that?  How is the guy supposed to get better at his job if he's not allowed to find out if the fixes he suggest to people actually work?  That seems nuts to me, but i digress.
I haven't tried the Doctor yet.  I'm going to, but I'm just being lazy because I know it won't work, and it's going to be really annoying to update my phone and backup photos first and all that good stuff.
I will post back after I run the doctor and try the new Palm profile.  Until then, I'd REALLY suggest you all do what I did and call Palm, insisting they fix the problem, even if it means a recall.  They aren't gonna do it just for me, no matter how many times I complain.  That's a fact.
If anyone DOES call Palm, it would probably be a good idea to bring up this thread and also to post here about what they tell you!

  • Windows Mobile PDA WiFi and Palm Pre Plus Hotspot

I can't get my PDA, which is running Windows Mobile 5, to connect securly with my Palm Pre Plus.  I can make the WiFi connection if the hotspot is set to open, but if the hotspot is set to wpa/wpa2 personal the connection doesn't happen.  Does anyone know what settings are required in the network setup area on the PDA to make the secure connection work?

Try doing a system update.  The steps are below.
From the Home screen, touch the launcher icon.
    Touch Updates.
If necessary, swipe horizontally or vertically to locate the application.
    Touch Download now.
    Touch Install now.
    Touch Done.
    Hope this helps!

  • Palm Pre Earthlink E-mail Issues. Please Help! Can receive not send.

It appears this is a common problem that no one has a definitive answer to. I have three e-mail accounts on my Palm Pre. Yahoo, GMail and Earthlink. With Yahoo and GMail I can send and recive with no problem. With Earthlink, I can only receive e-mail. Not send without incurring an e-mail application error. I have spoken with Earthlink, Sprint and Palm Support. Each had no advice, or at least advice that worked. I know many Earthlink subscribers have had the same problem, has anyone resolved the issue on the Palm Pre?
Any insight anyone can provide as to a solution that works would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • HP (Palm) Pre 2 and mobile hotspot question

HP had their webOS event Wednesday and the word is that the Pre 2 will be available for pre-order on Verizon today (Feb 10). I am certainly interested, but I have a question:
Will the Mobile Hotspot feature be free like it is on the Pre Plus?

    http://www.precentral.net/verizon-pre-2-now-available-free-mobile-hotspot-still-tow
This is really confusing. From precentral.net (above link), it said the 3g hot spot feature is free and confirmed.
PalmPre2_4Me wrote:I'm looking for an answer on this as well.  I just chatted with Verizon, they didn't know anything about at first, but did research it.  Told me that while it isn't listed as a checkout option, customer service would add it for an additional $20.
Now for the confusion, off the HP/Palm site, which links to a Verizon page, I found the following for the Pre 2:
Support Up To 5 WiFi-enabled Devices (3G Mobile Hotspot Service Included Free)
Now, I'm looking to upgrade ahead of the Palm Pre 3 - since I'm betting with that release the Mobile Hotspot feature wouldn't be free.  If anyone has any better info and would share, I would be most appreciative.  I want to get the new device, but for an additional $240/yr, not sure it is worth it.  Plus if I wait 3/6 months, the new device would be here and I might as well just upgrade then.
Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide!

  • Very slow through Verizon Palm Pre

When I connect my MacPro to my Palm Pre that uses mobile hotspot, I get about 1.5m down. When I connect my iPad, I only get about 160kbps. When I connect the iPad to my home wireless, I get the full speed of about 10megs down. I've tried connecting a few computers to the mobile hotspot and I always get pretty good speed but the iPad connected to the phone, is always slow. But again, no troubles when the iPad is connected to my home wireless.

this seems to be a known issue throughout 1.3.5...not sure of the fix time but this is being seen in huge numbers since the upgrade last week.  all of the slow response time seems to be a database issue and not a network connection issue.  i have direct wifi access points and good spring connection and it is virtuously impossible to check my email on the phone... ridiculous.

  • Touch screen froze on 3 consecutive palm pre's within about a 5 month span

My wife has a palm pre through sprint nextel. The first one lasted 4 days and screen froze up.  Sprint tech personnel at store could not fix phone or determine cause of the frozen screen. The sprint retail store replaced the phone. We took this phone and used it up until late August when yet again the screen froze just prior to our vacation. Hastily, we took it to a local authorized third party store, Wireless Co.  Their repair personnel looked at the phone and yet again could not determine the cause.  They replaced it as well with a refurbished phone. This third phone finally froze just like the previous two on 27DEC09. We took it to the sprint store the next day.  The techs looked at it decided that it was due to a liquid/subtance under the back cover just above the battery.  They refused to replace the phone a third time.  They offered only that (a) we use our insurance plan or (b) trade the phone in and renew our two year contract to get a discounted phone.  These phones have never been submersed in any liquid. The tech rep at the sprint store suggested humidity from being in the bathroom could have caused the problem. I paid full price for the first phone.  I don't think I need to point out I am a bit disappointed with the palm pres lifespan. If only sprint had the iphone.  The HTC hero or the instinct seem like our best alternatives now.  I dont think I will even consider the pixi.

  • Palm Pre crazy symptoms: "phone offline", will not charge battery, will not start, error message "an error has occured that cannot be resolved"

This is a long description of a series of problems with my new Palm Pre. You may wish to search the text to find your specific issue(s). There is no solution in my post. Look for possible answers in the responses to come.
I bought my Palm Pre 4 days ago and it arrived 2 days ago. Phone worked great. Last night I plugged in the phone and updated the OS. After completion, I selected "Done" and went to bed.
    - First Series of Issues: "Phone Offline", will not charge battery -
In upper lefthand corner of the phone there is the message "phone offline". Although the phone has been charging all night it reads "26% battery". I called the general Sprint tech support number and we tried the following things:
    1) Restart phone (press and hold power button, then select "turn off". after power down, press and hold power button to power on.)
    2) Reset the phone (several different ways - call tech support so that you do this correctly)
The individual at Sprint then sent me to another tech support person, presumably 2nd tier.
    - Second Series of Issues: Error message "an error has occured that cannot be resolved" -
Sprint tech support person #2 also had me restart and reset the phone in a number of ways. In her words "we've tried every palm pre trick I know" and each time the phone was unresponsive. Often we received the error message "phone is offline". We did a full erase and after that the phone would no longer restart. At this point the error message came up saying "an error has occured that cannot be resolved" which referred me to www.palm.com for assistance. I think it's important to note here that this was not the typical error message (black screen with white letters) but rather the blue sky background with a semitransparent box over it with white text.
Sprint tech support person #2 then connected me with Palm support and the dance continued. Again we tried a whole bunch of resetting and restarting and erasing options. Palm support instructed me to go to: www.palm.com/rom to download WebOS Doctor, which I did. I downloaded the file. While that was happening he had me hold the "volume up" button and plug the phone into the charger. This caused a USB symbol to appear on the phone. When the file was complete I received an error message that the file couldn't run. Palm tech support person seemed surprised. I mentioned that I was on a Mac and he said he couldn't help me. He then transferred me to another Palm support person who works with Mac users.
Palms tech support person #2 then informed me that I should have selected the "mac" download option on www.palm.com/rom. I verbally walked her through the whole series of webpages, telling her that it says that you need Windows (version whatever) or Mac (version whatever) but that at no time was there an option to download a different WebOS Doctor for different operating systems. After some more discussion she told me she would have to have someone call me back tomorrow.
    - Third Series of Issues: phone stuck on USB symbol -
So at the moment the phone is completely useless. Not fantastic. I booted up the mac in Windows 7 and downloaded WebOS Doc and received the same error. I also ran Windows Vista virtually and received the same error. Later this afternoon I'm heading into work to try the same thing on Windows XP.
In the meantime, I got onto this forum and located a thread that provided a direct link to the necessary file:
    palm.cdnetworks.net/staging/rom/webosdoctorp100ewwsprint.jar
After downloading that file, which I realized could totally be a virus, I was able to get WebOS Doc working on my computer. It required that I recharge the phone completely before beginning and now it's on the screen that says "Don't disconnect your phone" and the file is at 3% complete. Only... it's been at 3% complete for almost 30 minutes.
I am hoping that Palm will follow up with me tomorrow, but I'm leaving at 7am on a business trip and would love to have the thing working. Any suggestions are welcome, even if you can just tell me how to get the think disconnected safely before my flight tomorrow. I don't fancy getting through security with my phone wired to my laptop.
    Thanks.

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
Our phone support is open every day Monday through Sunday, although there are different hours of operation for the weekend. If after a webOS Doctor reset you are still experiencing the same problems, I would likely recommend replacement, either in a local store for your carrier or through our technical support department.
There may be additional technical support offered or suggested over the phone, this would need to be done first before a replacement could be issued.
    Hope this helps,

  • Palm Pre no longer syncing with Google Calendar

I've had my Pre for 4-5 weeks, and when I first got it, I configured the calendar to sync with my Google calendar.  Everything worked fine.  At some point, it stopped syncing.  If I add something to the calendar through Google, I don't see it on my Pre and if I add an event on the Pre, it never shows up on Google.  Obviously I tried the sync now option to no avail.  I'm not sure if this happened around the V1.1.0 update or not.  Is anyone else having issues syncing with Google Calendar?
    Thx,
    Brett

    Hello Bartman,
You may want to try removing and re-adding the gmail account to the Pre.  If this doesn't work, try creating a test gmail account and add it to the Pre.  This will tell you if it is your email account or the Palm Pre.
    Let us know what happens....
    Thanks,
    Cola

  • Is Palm Zire 21 Software compatible with Palm Pre Plus Cell Phone?

I have an older Palm Zire 21. I love all the features. However, now I am trying to consolidate my Windows (vista) Calendar with my Palm and it is not compatible. I thought I would purchase the newer Palm Pre plus Cell Phone in order to have all of my contacts and calendars on my phone as well as my laptop. Though no one can seem to answer my question: Can I import my contact and calendar from my Zire 21 to the Palm Pre Plus?
Many thanks to who can answer this for me. I greatly appreciate your time and assistant.

webOS (the new Operating System) from Palm does not natively sync to your computer, but to the "cloud" (online servers).
Palm offers a program that will read your Palm Desktop information, and transfer it to Google.  This is only a one-time transfer, and not a sync solution.  See this thread.
