Palm Pre USB - host and client?

I see a lot of posts about using USB Mode to transfer files between a PC and the Palm Pre, but is it possible to connect a USB hard drive or flash drive directly to the Pre to do file transfers to/from the phone?  The Palm website says that the Pre has "USB mass storage support", which could suggest that it could act as a host, as well as a client for USB data transfers.  I have used the Treo 650, and was eagerly awaiting an updated PalmOS phone that would add WiFi, GPS, A2DP Bluetooth capabilities, and EVDO Rev.A speeds, all of which the Pre offers, but no expandable memory via an SD (or MicroSD) slot!  I would love to go back to a PalmOS, and get away from Windows (I switched to the 800w just before the Pre was launched, to get these features), but it looks like I might just end up going to Android (where Sprint's HTC Hero and Samsung Moment have SD card slots)...

No the device is only the client. The statement "USB mass storage support" is meant to be that the device is used as a storage device only.
While your not the first to request the Pre have this function I do suggest that you leave feedback here: www.palm.com/feedback
If you have more questions please post back.

  • [vmware] Best way to share files between host and client

    Good afternoon!
I have successfully installed VMware server on my machine and set up a virtual machine, powering Windows XP for study issues (emulation via wine does not do the trick for me). The virtual machine runs fast and stable but does not meet my requirements unless I have two issues faced:
    First:
How to access a USB pendrive monunted by the host system properly within the client?
    Second:
What is the best way to share file system space between host and client? Should I set up a Samba share which is accessible for both host and client or is it save to grant my VM access to my physical hard disc as a whole (using it as a partition)?
Thanks for answers in advance, I have still quite a lot to learn, when it comes to VMs.
    Regards,
    ~cg

Do not setup your VMware to be able to access your physical disk as a whole. This would have you mounting the filesystem twice, corrupting it in the process.
You /can/ setup VMware with Sharing Folders that lets you share your filesystem (either / or just /home or something else) and that is what I would recommend.
As for accessing the pen drive from both operating systems at once, I'd say use the same Sharing Folders method. I always share /mnt so that I can access my cdrom/USB/etc from the vmware OS.
The sharing folders is basically the same as a samba share, but uses vmware's own method (HGFS). Samba is more secure (if you are worried about your VMware OS breaking from it's shell and attacking your real filesystem, which is unlikely). You need the vmware tools installed to make use of it.

  • Palm Pre - USB Function via Bluetooth

    Hi Folks,
Is there a way to to utilize the pre USB Date capability via Bluetooth? The idea it to transfer pics, music and media to/from the Pre and MS Vista without the cable? I have paired them without issue, though do not see how this would be done.
    thanks for any comments,

Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Earlier, I was trying to do this today with my Dell Mini9, but it didn't work.
I called Palm Tech Assistance and after some time they informed me that currently the Pre will not perform this function. Specifically, (in my case) the Pre needs to support OBEX format and does not.
I was extremely frustrated by this, and after examining the forums, see now that  many other folks are up cr@p creek without a paddle because of Palm's "oversight".
My Suggestion would be to follow the Carkit Bluetooth forum posters...
We need to consolidate the many many scattered posts on this issue and press for action from Palm!!!
Too many single post threads on this topic makes it a sleeper... a Non-issue in the eyes of Palm. Hopefully that changes and folks can consolidate their complaints here.
Its astounding that we got robbed of this ability... its so fundamental that I unfortunately didn't consider researching this before buying the Pre.
My fault obviously, and I sure do love many of the wonderous features of the Pre, but at the same time I have to practical and decide what will work for my uses: sure makes that HTC Hero coming up on Sprint look mighty appealing unless Palm makes this issue right. Pre-orders on my used Pre anyone?

  • Palm Pre USB overrides my keyboard

I've recently had a problem with using the USB cable on my Palm Pre with my desktops.  When I plug the USB cable into my PC, it t seems to override my keyboard, as in suddenly my keyboard stops working.  At first I thought it was because I have an older system at home, but it has happened at work as well.  Neither keyboard is USB connected. The only way to restore my keyboard is to reboot and remove my Palm.   Laptop has not proven to be an issue so far.
Any ideas?  I really like the convenience of being able to charge my phone at my desk without having to crawl uunder it to excavate the powerstrip.

Seems to be some kind of IO/IRQ conflict on the PC.  Get the latest chipset drivers for the pc and the see how that fairs.

  • Zen Vision M:60 with USB host and Panasonic Camcorder SDR-

I own a Panasonic Camcorder SDR-S0 which stores its data on a SD card. I'm thinking about buying the Zen Vision M:60 to use it as a sort of "imagetank" for importing the videos when on vacation. Normally the data on the SD card are transferred by connecting the camera to the PC & transferring them with the Panasonic software MotionSD studio .2E. Another possibility is using Pictbridge. The resulting format of the recorded data is mpeg2.When on vacation I don't have my PC with me & I would like to transfer the data on the Vision M:60. I read that for importing photos this should not give any problems, but no trace of user experience of importing video, without passing thru a PC. I did following test to check which sort of data are on the SD card before transmission to the PC, by reading the SD card with a USB cardreader?: it contained data with .MODextenstion (which is apparently a MPEG-2 codec), .MOI?extension files (which I think is not?needed) & a .PGI file?(which I think is needed?for?graphics printers ?). I copied one?MOV00B.MOD file to my PC and tried to play it. I succeeded without any problem to play it on Windows Media Player. My question : does anyone has any experience with the transfer of this sort of data to the Zen Vision M:60 using the USB host connected either to the digital camcorder or to a cardreader and then importing the .MOD files. If so, could the data be played back on the Vision M:60 ?Thanks for your help ?[color="#ff0000"]As I want to buy the Zen Vision M:60 (bargain price :smileytongue I hope someone with experience on this matter will respond urgently as I leave on holiday next week !!! According to the list of tested products here:?http://www.creative.com/products/pro...24&product=433?it's been tested on both Nikon Coolpix P3?and Nikon D200. So?I'd make the assumption that it probably does. It works with my Fuji S5600, and the list above shows they?only tested ?E900 and A600.

  • Palm Pre USB transfer speeds?

This is something I've had a problem with since launch, but I don't transfer much so it's not THAT big a deal.  Still very annoying and frustrating though.
It seems anywhere from XP to Windows 7, both Palm's cable and my own, I get ~2MB/s writing to the Pre.  My brother's is the same way.  I've tried various different caching options for removable devices, along w/ optimizing for speed (and thus needing proper ejecting) but nothing seems to help.  All the caching did was boost what looked like an initial speed bump, but it all caught up at the end.
When itunes sync worked, that was painfully slow too compared to even my old 1G iPod mini.  What gives?  Did palm cheap out on it, or were these early devices flukes?
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I just tested mine as well. Writes at around 2-3MB/s, reads around 18MB/s . Not sure if its just a hardware limit or not. It has not been a huge deal for me though. I have transfered 500-700MB movies over to it and till now did not even pay attention to the transfer speed. Usually just walk away when I do it.

  • Palm Pre - Controlling Send and Receive Settings

    Hi.
My Pre just downloaded 5 days worth of email from a POP3 account.
Is there a way I can change the settings to manually receive email and tell the phone when to stop receiving emails?
For example, say I only need to see emails for the last hour. On Windows Mobile, I would simply select "stop send and receive".
How do I handle this on the Pre?
    Thanks.

having the same issue, I'm still retrieving email every 30 minutes, regardless of what interval I set- manual, in standby mode, etc. (even the 24 hour setting still fetches every 30 minutes).
    another similar issue/question-
is there a way to hold email on the device?
my treo had the option to download/hold email on the device indefinitley, even after it was deleted from the server...the pre doesn't have this option and only syncs/holds what is avaialble on the server.
basically, if I check my email with my laptop, which downloads the email and deletes them from the server, then when my pre syncs within the next 30 miuntes, I lose everythign in the inbox.....have I missed somethign, or anybody know of a work around?

  • Bluetooth keyboard and support for palm pre

Has anyone heard any word on when and if the palm bluetooth keyboard will be usable on the palm pre.  I have been a palm user since the first device.  I am an attorney and switched from my Treo 650 to the pre.  I love the pre but many of the applications that I used in business with the treo, are now either not supported or not available for the pre.  The two most important of these would be bluetooth keyboard support & memo support and syncing with the pre.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  I have heard no discussion regarding use of the bluetooth keyboard witht the pre.  I also don't understand why any of the current pre sync third party solutions have not addressed the syncing of memos/notes from outlook to the pre.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Just bought a Palm Pre Plus (Verizon) and tried to connect it w/ my Palm Bluetooth Keyboard but with no luck. The Pre did find the Bluetooth Keyboard and tried to Pair the two devices, but the pairing failed.  I do hope that Palm allows this pairing to occur, as I won't purchase Word to Go (which has been a mainstay of mine on all my previous Palm devices) until I know that I can use the keyboard.

  • Palm Pre wont boot

Hello everyone, i was about to type a text when i my palm pre phone froze and turned off, now on start up the palm logo will appear and remain for 30 or so seconds before fading and starting what I believe to be the boot/start up process again.
I'm faily sure my phones knackered, but is there any solution to this, I have tried web os doctor but becuase the phone seems to restart it cant complete the rebooting cycle.
Any help would be really appreciated
    Cheers

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
When you tried to use the webOS Doctor tool, did you place your phone into recovery mode first? This will allow the program to find your phone and overwrite the OS.
Power your phone off and remove the back cover. Make sure you have the USB cable and wall charger that came with your device, and plug the cable into the wall charger but do not plug the phone into the cable yet.
Remove the battery, wait approximately 10 seconds, then reinsert the battery. Hold down the volume UP button, and insert the USB cable into the device. You should see a full-screen USB icon on your phone, which is different than the normal icon for USB Mode.
This is recovery mode, where your phone will be visible to the webOS Doctor. You may now unplug the USB cable from the wall charger, and plug it into your PC when the webOS Doctor requests, but not before.
    Hope this helps,

  • Temporary Switch from Broken Palm Pre Plus

I currently have a Palm Pre Plus with and Unlimited Data plan. I can no longer use it due to various damage, and rather than shill out $100 to the Asurion insurance I have on it, a friend gave me their Motorola Devour they no longer use. I was hoping to temporarily transfer my service over to the Devour until I can get my upgrade in January, but when I try to do it online, it tells me I must buy a tiered plan. This should not be true because I am switching from smartphone to smartphone. Is their a way to do this so that I keep my grandfathered plan?

Call in to Customer Service from another phone and have them assist you with the swap.  The different types of smartphones have different data plans on Verizon's back-end, so the rep should be able to help you.

  • Palm Pre remote wipe

Lent my brother my Palm Pre last weekend and he lost it in France. I tried to do a remote wipe on it, but it was registered with my number so if the wipe msg is sent via SMS it won't get received...or will it ?
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance, Dave.

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
Even if roaming, if your phone could receive text messages, the remote wipe message would be delivered. Make sure to do this before activating a replacement device, or you will end up just erasing your replacement device.
    Hope this helps,

  • New Palm Profile for Used Palm Pre

    Hi,
I bought a second-hand Palm Pre (Movistar, ES) and now want to establish a new Palm Profile so I can use the phone in Australia (Optus, AU).
How do I set up a new Palm Profile on this phone ?
It is currently running WebOS 1.4
    Thanks,
    Nick
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
I wiped the device and started from scratch and couldn't get past the Insert SIM etc screen.
When I restarted the device, it then locked in Seting Language.
I have now gone back to WebOS 1.3.5.2 using a Meta-Doctor hack, and can run the device, use phone etc.
When I ran the First Use App, it asked for my language then did a reboot, and still not Palm Profile.
Is there a Palm website where I can set up a profile, and the use my ESN to get Palm to send the info to my phone ?
I also tried using root-based program to force a profile creation:
    luna-send -n 1 palm://com.palm.accountservices/createNovaAccount {\"password\":\"YOURPASSWORD\",\"email\":\"[email protected]\",\"firstName\":\"YOURFIRSTNAME\",\"lastName\":\"YOURLASTNAME\",\"language\":\"en\",\"country\":\"gb\",\"questionId\":\"2\",\"response\":\"FIRSTCAR\"}
This came back with ACCOUNT_CREATION_ERROR "Could not get account server url"
Any help appreciated, as I want to download proper Palm Apps, as well as the Homebrew Apps.
    Thanks,
    Nick

  • Palm Pre showing "No Service" and losing Ev/Service over 50% of the time + random shut offs when shut.

For starters, I have had 5 Palm Pre's.  The first pre had a battery that I was told was too small (which explained the occasional random shutdowns when being shut).  The second pre I had did the exact same thing brand new out of the box.  The third pre I had worked perfectly up until several days ago (right around the time change).  My calendar synced with G-mail was an hour early for every appointment; also several events were completely missing from my Pre calendar that were on g-mail.  In response to this problem I checked the time zone on g-mail with no resolve, and eventually tried erasing my google account on my pre in hopes of a fresh start.
This is when I encountered the real problems.
My Pre would not delete the account.  Every time I tried deleting it the top bar read "No Service" or my "Ev" indicator would disappear along with the bars.  After this the Calendar app would either freeze or just never delete the gmail account (the gray circle would just spin endlessly for literally 30 minutes).  Ever since then I have been experiencing the "No Service" indicator plus random loss of service and Ev (in places where in the past I had PERFECT Ev and Service)
Since then I have called Sprint and Palm multiple times, and both blame each other for the problem.  I recently took it in to the Tech's at Sprint and they could not find the problem and ordered me a "refurbished" pre.  woohoo.
Today I went and got the "refurbished" pre and within an hour of having it, I noticed that the same problem was being experienced (along with a few dead pixels on the screen).  So I took it back to the Sprint store and asked for a new one (or one that just flat out worked and didn't have dead pixels).  I then experienced very horrible customer service from Sprint (which was unusual since in the past they have been very helpful) and received a second "refurbished" Pre after a very pointless arguement with a receptionist.  By then it was closing time and I had to leave.
Upon arriving back to my dorm, I noticed the same problem was occuring:  "no service" messages and  no internet/service literally 50% of the time I was looking at the Pre's screen.  Also, my second "refurbished" Pre (that I currently have) did the exact same thing my very first one did: it occasionally shut down when I shut it.  This leads me to believe that the battery is too small just like my first Pre's battery was. . .
So now I am very frustrated and looking for answers.  I have never posted any sort of "cry for help" on the internet before, I hope this wasn't too winey lol.
Does anyone have any idea what is happening to my Pre?  Are there other people with a similar issue?  Any solutions to the problem?
Any info/help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I am on Pre number 5 and am so sorry I gave up my BB.  I have had this same issue numerous times and my biggest problem is the battery just drains.....and each one is the same...it freezes, the keyboard does not connect with the screen, the phone calls my last callers in the middle of the night sometimes 2 and 3 times I assume during backup, the tech at the Sprint store tried to help me sync my google calendar and deleted my appointments. On the last refurb my pics did not syn....they said we will keep the phone so you can sync directly, and sent the phone back before I got there. So I lost the pics of my recently passed dog.  They were like well they would have charged us 400 a day if we did not send it back........like whatever.  My chargers, car, wall and usb to computer work intermittently. I keep my car running to charge the battery.  It just continues to drain......and it goes on and on.......I baby sit this phone and cannot use it most of the time. .... palm says oh they should give you a new phone.....sprint says who said that palm?  I think about the first few months when i actually was trying to get outlook to sync.......now i just would like to be able to freakin talk on my phone.  I purchase an album on amazone and they take the money and i cannot download the music.  I tried to convert a song into a ringone I have it for safety and it is really bad.  I have to drive an hour to a "corporate store"  to beg them to give me a blackberry. I love multitasking and accessing the internet however it is freezing here now and I would like to feel a little safer with having a freaking phone to talk on.  I have spent probably a total of 40 hours on this thing since july. They say well do you turn it off and on? how often do you charge it......like its my problem......I remember the early treo's were great and then .................very similar to this 5 phones later and still in palm black abyss. So you see there are others who are having these problems they probably just like me do not want to spend another freaking second talking about this phone.

  • Is it safe to charge my iPhone 4S with my Palm Pre and HTC charger?

Recently, I've lost the white charger that came with my iPhone 4S, but I still have the USB cable that originally came with it and I was wondering if it's safe to use the USB charger that came with my pervious Palm Pre and HTC EVO. The phone charges when I use these. But I'm not sure if it's safe to use these to charge my iPhone

    It is fine.

  • Palm Pre Tethering to Windows Mobile Device via Dialup Network or USB

I've got a Windows Mobile device that I tethered to the Internet via Dialup Network on my old Verizon phone, and would like to use the Palm Pre for that same purpose. The Windows device does not have wi-fi, so that's not an option, but maybe tethering through USB might work.
Does anyone have any experience with this and can give me some direction on setting it up? Thanks!

there is a way to connect via usb,
refer to precentral.net and do a search.
