Palm Pre USB transfer speeds?

This is something I've had a problem with since launch, but I don't transfer much so it's not THAT big a deal.  Still very annoying and frustrating though.
It seems anywhere from XP to Windows 7, both Palm's cable and my own, I get ~2MB/s writing to the Pre.  My brother's is the same way.  I've tried various different caching options for removable devices, along w/ optimizing for speed (and thus needing proper ejecting) but nothing seems to help.  All the caching did was boost what looked like an initial speed bump, but it all caught up at the end.
When itunes sync worked, that was painfully slow too compared to even my old 1G iPod mini.  What gives?  Did palm cheap out on it, or were these early devices flukes?

I just tested mine as well. Writes at around 2-3MB/s, reads around 18MB/s . Not sure if its just a hardware limit or not. It has not been a huge deal for me though. I have transfered 500-700MB movies over to it and till now did not even pay attention to the transfer speed. Usually just walk away when I do it.

In windows 7 it's quite easy to see the transfer speed of say a USB drive, but I've been trying to search up some sort of app or widget that can tell you how fast the USB transfer speed is, just to gauge the performance. I know there is xbench but that's just read/write speeds. Thanks.

  • Palm Pre USB - host and client?

I see a lot of posts about using USB Mode to transfer files between a PC and the Palm Pre, but is it possible to connect a USB hard drive or flash drive directly to the Pre to do file transfers to/from the phone?  The Palm website says that the Pre has "USB mass storage support", which could suggest that it could act as a host, as well as a client for USB data transfers.  I have used the Treo 650, and was eagerly awaiting an updated PalmOS phone that would add WiFi, GPS, A2DP Bluetooth capabilities, and EVDO Rev.A speeds, all of which the Pre offers, but no expandable memory via an SD (or MicroSD) slot!  I would love to go back to a PalmOS, and get away from Windows (I switched to the 800w just before the Pre was launched, to get these features), but it looks like I might just end up going to Android (where Sprint's HTC Hero and Samsung Moment have SD card slots)...

No the device is only the client. The statement "USB mass storage support" is meant to be that the device is used as a storage device only.
While your not the first to request the Pre have this function I do suggest that you leave feedback here: www.palm.com/feedback
If you have more questions please post back.

  • Palm Pre - USB Function via Bluetooth

    Hi Folks,
Is there a way to to utilize the pre USB Date capability via Bluetooth? The idea it to transfer pics, music and media to/from the Pre and MS Vista without the cable? I have paired them without issue, though do not see how this would be done.

Earlier, I was trying to do this today with my Dell Mini9, but it didn't work.
I called Palm Tech Assistance and after some time they informed me that currently the Pre will not perform this function. Specifically, (in my case) the Pre needs to support OBEX format and does not.
I was extremely frustrated by this, and after examining the forums, see now that  many other folks are up cr@p creek without a paddle because of Palm's "oversight".
My Suggestion would be to follow the Carkit Bluetooth forum posters...
We need to consolidate the many many scattered posts on this issue and press for action from Palm!!!
Too many single post threads on this topic makes it a sleeper... a Non-issue in the eyes of Palm. Hopefully that changes and folks can consolidate their complaints here.
Its astounding that we got robbed of this ability... its so fundamental that I unfortunately didn't consider researching this before buying the Pre.
My fault obviously, and I sure do love many of the wonderous features of the Pre, but at the same time I have to practical and decide what will work for my uses: sure makes that HTC Hero coming up on Sprint look mighty appealing unless Palm makes this issue right. Pre-orders on my used Pre anyone?

  • Palm Pre USB overrides my keyboard

I've recently had a problem with using the USB cable on my Palm Pre with my desktops.  When I plug the USB cable into my PC, it t seems to override my keyboard, as in suddenly my keyboard stops working.  At first I thought it was because I have an older system at home, but it has happened at work as well.  Neither keyboard is USB connected. The only way to restore my keyboard is to reboot and remove my Palm.   Laptop has not proven to be an issue so far.
Any ideas?  I really like the convenience of being able to charge my phone at my desk without having to crawl uunder it to excavate the powerstrip.

Seems to be some kind of IO/IRQ conflict on the PC.  Get the latest chipset drivers for the pc and the see how that fairs.

  • Slow USB transfer speed when iTunes is running

    hello everyone,
today I was trying to transfer a bunch bunch of files from my NAS to a portable USB 3 hard drive.
the transfer speed was 18 to 20 mbytes/s... quite slow for this device.
after investigation the problem was found that when iTunes (11.0.1) is NOT running the tranfer speed goes up to 90+ mbytes/s
anyone has an idea on how to solve the problem?

The only testing that could be performed prior to resetting the AirPort would be to make throughput performance measurements ... but, at best, these would only stand to confirm the slow transfer speeds that you are seeing.
However, if you do want to make some quantitative measurements, one easy to use (& free) utility is: AJA System Test.

  • USB Transfer Speed

I knkow in windows explorer in windows 7 if you click "more details" you can see the transfer rate (Ex: for USB Drive). Is there an app or addon to the finder that can do the same (tell me how fast the file is being transferred)?

I also am experiencing extremely SLOW transfer speeds of files between an external harddrive and my T61.
    The details:
    External HD: SimpleTech Model 96300-41001-073
    OS: Windows 7 x64
    Memory: 4GB
    Current transfer speed ~8.80 KB/s
Machine is setup dual boot.  When switched to Windows XP Pro x86....the slow speeds are not experienced.
Copying to/from a USB thumb drive is not experiencing slow speeds.
Find no useful information on SimpleTech website.  Have made two requests for help from SimpleTech with no response.
Lenovo site does not list this explicit problem.  However a similar problem was noted.  It's fix was made available in a BIOS update which I applied.  The BIOS update did not correct my problem.  (re: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67989)
All relevant (as I could determine) fixes listed for the beta of WIN7 Beta have also been appplied.  I find no updates for WIN7 RC.
    How to further diagnose?
    Fix to apply?

  • Mavericks USB transfer speeds

Is it just me or did Apple seriously kick down the maximum transfer rates on usb devices.  Literally feel like i'm using USB 1.0 in the year 2000 when transfering ANYTHING!  Cloud promotions?

I was noticing the same issue on my iMac, late 2009 with USB 2.0 ports running Mavericks 10.9.2. The transfer speed was way below what it should be. I ran some tests to collect data. From what I recall I was getting about 7MB/s  rate compared to the USB 2.0 stated rate of  48MB/s. I don't expect to hit close to the stated rate however being that it was only 14% of the stated rate seemed a bit too low. I called Apple and the support was great but after a few attempted resets, configuration changes, etc..the issue was not solved. The person finally came back stating that after discussing with their engineering team, this is a known issue and will be fixed in the 10.9.3 update for Mavericks. I transferred a file of about 500MB and timed it. I would expect some error in the timing but the transfer rate consistently was hovering about 12-16% of the stated USB 2.0 rate. I am going to wait and see what 10.9.3 does. May I ask what rates were you seeing?
This little test also had me suspect other areas including ethernet and wi-fi. Over ethernet to my time capsule (n) I got a rate of about 25MB/s, which is about 19% of the stated gigabit etherent. The test over wi-fi to my time capsule resulted in about 9MB/s, which is about 23% of the stated rate for Wireless N.

  • USB Transfer Speeds

I'm currently using the iPod w/my Windows machine because it has USB 2.0, but I really prefer my G4 iMac, and would much rather use it w/the iPod. Whichever machine I use w/the iPod is the one I will use as my "main" computer. I was wondering if anybody had taken any stats on how long it takes to transfer like a 400 mb movie to the iPod over USB 1.1. I could try it on my own I suppose, but I was hoping somebody out there already had test this so I would know whether or not it is worth the trouble.
    Thanks for any help.

    480Mb copied from iPod:
    USB1.1 - 11 min 15 seconds (G4/1GHz)
    USB2.0 - 2 min 44 seconds (G5, 2.0 dual)
(for comparison, the same folder copied in 2 min 18 seconds via FW from my 3g iPod)
I would think that syncing an entire music library or regualr transfer of large files via USB1.1 would be rather tedious and time consuming, but for updating an already installed library a CD or two at a time, and for an occasional video transfer, USB1.1 wouldn't be too bad.
Give it a try - but set your iPod to be manually managed first, then plug it into the Mac and copy a few files - you'll get the feel of the performance difference very quickly. If you run no other application (and switch off the screensaver etc), it'll certainly help. Bear in mind too that any figures you get given will depend to some degree on how fast the system the file copy was done on since USB is CPU controlled.

  • Slow USB transfer

I can't figure out how to replicate this yet, but it's happened twice today. I'm stuck and don't know what to look at next, but it's a problem.
My USB transfer speeds slowed to a crawl on a 2GB directory copied via Ranger just now, and earlier on a larger transfer. Several GB took ~2 hours over USB 2.0 from ext4 HDD to fat32 USB. The USB stick is RadioShack's GigaWare brand and shows up as Sandisk in lsusb, and never been formatted since i opened it.
Looks like ehci_hcd is loading properly for the disk. usb 8-2 is my mouse. Got a USB fan plugged in (one 5V one), too.
I haven't modified the udev rules and usually let udiskie mount things.

First of all, what I'm about to say may be close to worthless... but that never stopped me before
    But this caught my eye:
Looks like ehci_hcd is loading properly for the disk. usb 8-2 is my mouse. Got a USB fan plugged in (one 5V one), too.
    combined with this:
[788645.857480] usb usb3: root hub lost power or was reset
[788645.857521] usb usb4: root hub lost power or was reset

I have a nettop powered by one of those little 90W "brick" power supplies and if I plug my Hauppage USB TV adapter into the sucker it draws so much power that all hell breaks loose on the system. I can't tell how badly though because the USB keyboard goes dead.
A powered USB hub fixed that issue.
But again, I have no idea if this is even remotely related to your errors.
Another thing (since I'm on a roll with bad advice)... I've got some USB flash drives that are simply dog slow... they just are. Put a different brand into the same slot and do the same operations and the difference is amazing. Plus, you don't mention the size of the USB flash drive, but they are known to get slower on writes the closer they are to being full... that's just how they roll.

I'm looking to upgrade from a Palm Tungsten E2 + an old cell phone to one device - a new smart phone.  I have Verizon, and they offer the Palm Pre 2.  The question is whether I will be able to transfer my address book and calendar (and a few other items) from my Tungsten E2 onto the new phone.  I also have a 3rd party cookbook and a shopping list application that I would love to transfer too.  Not holding out much hope for those though.

  • How do I fix the slow transfer speed over USB on my 24" iMac?

I am backing up/cloning with SuperDuper, and running Lion.  The displayed transfer speed never gets past about 20mb per second.  Painfully slow....  Any suggestions?

Actually that's pretty good for USB. USB is slow - there is nothing you can do about it. Firewire always has been faster. Personally, I only use external Firewire drives for cloning or backing up. Even then, if it's a fresh clone, it'll take moe than an hour for 160 GB.
So, I schedule it when I have other things to do and walk away until it's done.

You will need to sync your handheld to Palm desktop to make sure the data in Palm desktop is current. Download and install Palm desktop 6.2, you need this version for the Palm Data Transfer Assistant tool. Here is the link; http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/32859_en.html
Setup a gmail account for your data.  You have 3 options for your data transfer, transfer to the palm profile, exchange server account or Gmail. The palm profile has experienced some data loss issues at this point so I would highly recommend using gmail.
Go to this link and download the Data Transfer Assistant; http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/pre/migration/moveontophone.html
Select to sync with your gmail account.
For reference purposes, click on the following link for the support page for your device on the kb.palm.com webpage.

  • Transfer speed of USB vs Gigaport attached drive WRT610N

I know this is a loaded question but here goes:  Assumptions:  eqivalent drive specs but one is connected to the USB port of a 610N and the other is connected to the gigaport of the 610N which drive should have the fastest throughput and approximately by what % margin?
The reason that I am asking this question is that I did a backup of about 40GB to a Seagate drive attached to the USB port and it TOOK FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a gig capable drive on order and am praying that the performance will be much better than the USB drive.

What is the speed you are getting from the USB Port..?
I think you need to make some changes on your Wireless router, so the Download and upload speed improves.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab -
    This settings are for 2.4GHz.
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect, and after this try Downloading and Uploading on your Storage Drive and check whats the speed you are getting
Same goes for your 5GHz Wireless Network.
Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network.
Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to159 and Standard Channel to 161-5.805GHz...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Try and see how is the data transfer speed.
