Palm's Hail Mary

Let me begin by saying this is NOT  a bash on Palm, rather just something I believe that they need to do to stay alive.
Let's face it.  The news coming out of Sunnyvale isn't all peaches and cream.  Palm's burning through cash, not selling devices at the rate they'd like (or their investors would like).
Yes, advertising has been an issue and it's a BIG one.  Why is it that when I see ads for the Pre or Pixi, none of the cool stuff is thrown out there?  Just like many of you, I live in an iWorld.  The Pre can run circles around anything coming out of Cupertino or even Mountain View.  I don't mean that whimsical "oh, I can run multiple apps and you can't" stuff - WebOS is what mobile operating systems should be standardized on.  Evolution is real in technology and more and more I see that previous mobile operating systems are analogous to the Neanderthal and WebOS is the modern day human (hmm... seems like the hyperbole pills I took are kicking in... ha ha).
The next issue - hardware.  The current hardware is nice.  But it's now coming up on a year old (the Sprint launch was 20090606).  I was hoping to see something completely different form factor with the Pre+ (no dice).
Palm's got to match the current popular form factor - rectangular, wide-screen landscape and a VIRTUAL keyboard option.  Yes, I know a lot of folks don't like the virtual keyboard and for them, the Pre and Pixi will always be available.  For those of us who are OK with tapping on a screen, it would be great to see a new form factor...
... which brings me to my last point - I've said this before but it needs to be re-emphasized.  Palm simply MUST partner with HTC or a similar hardware company to manufacture their devices.  The EVO is coming out and the launch date is June 13th on Sprint.  That's just way too convenient for all those folks on Sprint who signed up for a one year contract at the Palm launch last year.  The EVO has a sexiness to it that really has folks talking and they're not talking about the OS.  Now, can you just imagine if the same device ran WebOS?  Wow!  Of course, it would need to be Palm branded to get the full effect.
Well, that's the end of my rant.  Here's hoping we'll see something new from Palm shortly.  They wowed us with the Pre, they can do it again!
Go Team! :-)

  • MBP (13-inch, early 2011) goes into hibernation instead of safe sleep upon closing the lid (only when using battery power)

    MBP details
13-inch MacBook Pro, early 2011 (model identifier: MacBookPro8,1)
Running Yosemite, OS X 10.10.1 (however, problem started while using Mavericks)
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB memory
    Symptoms
    * the MBP goes into hibernation instead of sleep upon closing the lid on battery power (i.e.,  when AC adapter is NOT connected)
-- problem does not occur when AC adapter is connected
    * putting the computer to sleep by other means does not induce the problem; these other means include:
      -- [i] option+command+Power,
-- [ii] Apple Icon --> Sleep,
-- [iii] in Terminal: pmset sleepnow
    * the battery is NOT getting drained at all; if I close the lid on 87%, the battery is still at about 87% when I get the MBP back up and running
To be as clear as possible:
    (1) MBP is on and in use  (power source: battery); battery is at X%
    (2) the lid is then closed
    (3) the battery indicator light glows bright for about 10 seconds, then shuts off, and with it so does the MBP (all fans and sounds cease)
    (4) opening the lid and pressing any key on the keyboard does nothing (the computer is not sleeping)
    (5) to turn the MBP back on, I must hit the power button once; this brings up  and the gray screen and loading bar indicative of returning from hibernation
    (6) log in; battery is still at X%
    Attempted Solutions / Fixes
There are Apple Discussions addressing similar MBP issues, many of which at least have work-arounds, if not full-blown solutions. However, I have tried many of the proposed work-arounds and solutions; nothing has solved my problem. Such attempted solutions include:
      * made sure EFI/SMC firmware was up to date
      * updated all software
      * logged in as a different user
      * booted in Safe Mode
      * reset the PRAM
      * repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility
      * repaired additional disk permissions in recovery mode (a la this chron.com advice)
      * ran the Apple Hardware Test multiple times (short test while plugged in, short test on battery, extended test while plugged in, extended test on battery)
      * booted from an external known-good OS on USB drive
      * reseated the RAM
      * used MemTest to test the RAM's health (it was good)
      * tested my battery's health with the app Battery Health (it is healthy!)
      * booted my computer with one stick of the MBP's original RAM at a time (figured "why not?")
      * booted my computer using other sticks of RAM
      * checked my power management settings using PMSET in the terminal (e.g., pmset -g); tried various hibernation modes (e.g., sudo pmset -a hibernationmode X, where X=0,1,3, etc)
      * searched/grepped through my power management logs and Console messages to look for googleable items (e.g., pmset -g log | grep WORD, where WORD=failure, sleep, etc);  still have not found help online
      * brought the MBP to a Mac Genius
    -- he ran some further tests, but found nothing;
-- he re-installed my OS as a hopeful-hail-mary-just-maybe-last-ditch effort; the problem persisted!
-- we both agreed that we had ruled out a software cause
-- he offered me to leave my MBP to get fixed for a flat fee of $300.00 (which after a couple weeks of trying to figure this out is starting to sound more and more reasonable)
Given that it is likely not a software issue, what hardware might it be? By booting from an OS on an external drive, I think I've ruled out a bad hard drive or hard drive cable. Also, given that inducing sleep in any way other than closing the MBP's lid does not cause the problem, it seems there might be a wire (or something) in the hinge section of the MBP that gets moved when the lid is closed possibly causing some kind of short circuit...or something.
If someone with more experience interpreting Console messages, for example, can help, I'd be happy to provide some logs, or any additional information.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Ok, this is a crazy-simple, quasi-embarrassing fix, but I'll post it anyway just in case anyone is having a similar problem (for example, this guy: Changes to pmset being ignored).
Some time around late last August / early September (2014) this issue began happening for me (specifically, issue = closing lid while on battery power induces hibernation / shut down instead of sleep --- independent of hibernation mode). Maybe it was when I upgraded to Yosemite (not sure what the exact date of that was). As detailed in my original post, I frantically tried everything I could think of... At that time, however, I had quite a few presentations and posters to create and present at meetings and conferences, so I held off fixing it for a couple of months and returned to it this past week, where I tried a few more things listed above, but again to no avail...
This morning, I simply tried fudging around with all my power management settings again (via pmset in Terminal). The simplicity of the fix surprised me. But now that I understand it, I know it is likely the same fix for other threads I've read, such as the one above:
                                        (TLDR in bold)
    (1) Take note of your power management settings (Terminal:  pmset -g custom)
    (2) Is the "standby" flag set to 0? If so, set it to 1. Wa-la! Done.
This fix is crazy and embarrassing b/c I was so close to it for so long. I tried changing my hibernation modes multiple times (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X, where X=0,1,3,25,etc). I read about manipulating other PMSET settings that helped other people with newer MBPs, like "autopoweroff" and "autopoweroffdelay" --- settings that I do not have on the MBP early 2011 (check your settings: pmset -g cap). And most amazingly of all, I even messed with the "standbydelay" setting, trying to make it so long that my computer should never go into hibernation... Yet, from what I can tell by looking over my notes, I never simply set "standby" from 0 to 1.
There are interesting questions that arise due to this fix. For example, why did this problem persist on clean installs of OS Yosemite? Is "standby" being set to 0 the Yosemite default? I'm not sure. If it is, then Kappy was right: this was normal behavior... It just wasn't always the normal behavior...at least not for my MBP. Normal behavior (hibernatemode 3) used to be (and now is again) that the MBP goes into safe sleep, and then only after an allotted amount of time will it go into full-blown hibernation.
NOTE: the "standby" and "standbydelay" PMSET settings are not available in some earlier MBP models (e.g., my brother has a 2010 and does not have these settings); so if you're having a similar problem with an earlier model, this fix might not be of any help to you.

  • QT Pro -- Did I miss something in the documentation?

Someone please check me on this, because I think I must be getting senile. After many years of thinking about it, I finally popped the whopping $30 for Quicktime Pro (for QTP7 on my 27" iMac Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.7). It installed without problem -- though it's rather disconcerting that it still looks, smells, and largely acts like QT Player 7. I had a no-fun-at-all-time trying to open video clips that wouldn't open with the In and Out selection markers, so I couldn't trim, or cut and paste, or do anything at all to edit them in a time-linear sense. I DL'd the QuickTime 7 User Guide PDF with the "Getting Started With QuickTime Pro" PDF and read it and re-read it several times, tried QT Pro help, but I couldn't find a single bit of information on why some video formats would open with the In and Out selection markers, and thus be editable, and others would not.
After 2 solid days of knocking my thick skull against the wall, I finally had my Archimedean Eureka Moment, and realized that ALL the files that WOULD open with the In and Out selection markers were .mov files, while files I was trying to open unsuccessfully were .mpg, .mpeg, m2v, .mp2, mp3, .mp4s, and suchlike. I went back through the QuickTime 7 User Guide PDF AND QuickTime Pro Help, as well as searching here on Apple's support forum, and on other Apple/QT discussion groups, and NOWHERE could I find anything that said files had to be in .mov format to be editable with the In and Out selection markers. Can someone please point out to me the pertinent section of the documentation I must have missed, where that MOST important information is presented.
In a Hail Mary guess, I thought that perhaps the "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X" might help solve my problems, though it's description didn't sound that promising: "This add-on to QuickTime or QuickTime Pro provides the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed (also known as muxed, where the audio and video tracks are interleaved together into one track) and non-multiplexed (also known as elementary) streams." Yeah, I got that, but does it do anything ELSE in QT Pro, like give the user the ability to edit.mpeg video with the In and Out selection markers in QuickTime Pro? I could not find THAT information either, and I'm really not keen on plunking down another 20 bucks for a function as simple as playing back .mpeg files, when I have several utilities that already allow me to do that.
What I'm using QT Pro for right now is chopping up free, non-commercial,non-copyrighted or copy-protected, legally-belonging-to-me, guitar lessons so I can break them down into small sections at a time that I can loop and learn before going on to the next section of the lesson -- very handy. So, I'm sorry, but I don't really think I'm a candidate for the thousand-dollar Final Cut Studio, or even the two-hundred dollar Final Cut Express. I'm retired, and on a fixed income, and I can only afford what I can afford.
So PLEASE, someone tell me if I'm stuck with no choice but to convert my videos to .mov format before I can edit them in QT Pro, or have I, in my dotage, overlooked another, cost-free way, of actually using QT Pro for what I want to do, without all the monkey-motion of converting everything.
    Thanks for your time,
    Bart Brown

I may or may not need QT Pro (a moot point, as I already have it)
As previously indicated, hang onto it if you plan to do any layering, masking, and/or picture-in-picture video composites. It is handy for quick clip modifications not requiring use of a full video editor.
I DO need the $20 MPEG-2 component (nickel & dime, nickel & dime, nickel & dime, nickel & dime)
    I HAVE FFMPEG X
    I HAVE MPEG Streamclip
The Apple MPEG-2 Playback component is only needed if you plan to use MPEG-2/M2V content in QT based applications. That is, applications like QT and MPEG Streamclip which access codecs for which your system is configured. Utilities like FFmpegX, VLC, and HandBrake have their own codecs embedded within their respective applications.
In regards to MPEG Streamclip (and AC3)...
Rather than try to cover each individual point as you brought them up, let me summarize the situation by enumerating your options.
    1) The Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component does not support any audio compression formats. It is a video codec only just as H.264 is a video codec. Either the audio is QT compatible or it is not. If it is not, then your best option is to convert non-compatible audio to a QT compatible compression format.
    2) If you really want to play AC3 DD5.1 audio on a Mac, the best way is to use the VLC media player and send the AC3 audio data to an external DD5.1 decoder via the VLC "passthrough" option. (I use the Logitech Z-680 for external decoding and amplification of optical digital or 6-channel analog data.)
    3) No matter what AC3 codec you install on your Mac, for it to work on the Mac, the audio will either have to be mixed down to two channels for core audio processing on the system or you will have to install an auxiliary audio card capable of outputting the AC3 decoded audio as 6 separate channels of audio which can also be handled by the core audio system software. (I use a 6-channel M-Audio card here for audio usually transcoded to either 4, 5, or 6 channels of AAC or AIFF compressed audio data.)
    4) While MPEG Streamclip only supports 2 of the 6 DD5.1 channels at a time as QT compatible audio channels at a time, the user can select which two channels are output. Most users opt for the "stereo mix" option but could just as easily select the "Front Mix", "Surround", "L/R Ch.", "Center Ch.", "LS/RS Ch.", or "LFE Ch." option. You can even make multiple passes to decode/export all 6 channels of audio and attempt to re-assemble them as separate audio tracks, 3 paired stereo tracks, or a single "surround" audio track if you have the required hardware support for playback.
Anyway, I've DL'd my AC3, I'm buying my MPEG-2 component (which I still think is a ripoff: why leave out ONE critical component -- when you've included dozens of others for free -- and make your customers pay, AGAIN, to make the $30 software you just paid for from the same company into a $50 software package so it will do what you want it to do? To me, that dog don't hunt).
As has been stated many times, QT is based on the idea that multiple parallel tracks of data (up to 99) can all be played back synchronously using a single external clock. Multiplexed MPEG-1/2 content, on the other hand, employs spatial synchronization—two different technological approaches. By interspersing blocks of audio data between blocks of video data in a single data stream, one form of data is prevented from "overrunning" the other. AVI works in a similar manner using parallel tracks of data. Only in this case, frames of audio data are interleaved with frames video data to maintain synchronization. The main difference here, however, is that, as far as QT is concerned, the frames are only a half frame "out of sync" while the MPEG-1/2 data is "out of sync" by an undetermined degree. Since QT cannot equate a specific time reference to corresponding frames of audio and video content, it cannot properly convert or edit this content. In short, the MPEG-2 Playback component is not a "critical" component since QT was never designed to use it and only added it in response to user requests. As to pricing, If you wish to perform transcoding of WMV content, the Flip4Mac codecs alone run from $29 to $179 depending on what level of capabilities you require. (And you still need the QT 7 Pro key.) Your main problem here is that you are editing in an QT non-compatible compression format designed for content delivery rather using a QT compatible, edit specific compression format. I assume this was a result of have the Tape-DVD recording device on hand and decided this approach was easier than going the more conventional route of converting to DV using a DAC device. As a result, your data is probably compressed to about 1/5 the data rate/size of a DV file. Unfortunately, you will likely have to pay a price in terms of quality and work flow problems. Still, I suspect you would be less than willing to go back to square one with your tapes and re-digitize the content a second time.
What MORE am I going to need to accomplish that, do you know?
Whether you are editing a "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 file or a DVD title consisting of one or more VOB files (also containing "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content), the work flow is essentially the same. Simply drop all of the non-zero VOB files in the title set to the MPEG Streamclip work window, fix the timecode breaks, and start your editing as if you were working with a single MPEG file.
NOTE: unless it has changed, FFmpegX may still be limited to 2 GB MPEG file sizes for processing while I believe MPEG Streamclip has a 4 GB MPEG file size limit. I assume this may not be a problem for you if you are working with "snippets" but could be a problem if edits are merged to overly long files. In either case, the VOBs are encoded to files of 1 GB or less and should not present a problem even if you are working with a multi-VOB title set.
why do I have to go through the kludge of recording tape to DVD, then sneaker-netting the DVD to my iMac to get the digitized video on my computer?
You don't. You could have used any analog-to-digital converter device. For instance, many old Hi-8/Digital-8 camcorders and most recent DV camcorders have the ability to convert your VHS output directly to DV content which can be captured in any video editing (e.g., iMovie), dedicated capture (e.g., the free Vidi app) or even QT X/QT 7 Pro applications. The content is digitized in real time to your computer. Files would probably be 4-5 times larger than your DVD or MPEG files, but the resulting quality (depending on the original tape quality) might be better and the content is fully compatible will all QT apps (assuming you don't somehow corrupt the files).
On the other hand, if I already had all of those DVDs on hand, I might consider using HandBrake to convert them to H.264/AAC files and then simply trim and merge the resulting files for distribution. I.e., Handbrake includes its own embedded codecs and is capable of batch processing files while you sleep or are busily engaged in other activities. And, the resulting files are editable at the frame level in the QT 7 Pro which you already have.
Why is it that Mini Port on the new iMacs is unable to take direct HDMI INPUT from a digital video source at 1080p natively? It's pretty depressing A) having, once again, to buy some $130 adapter to even GET digital input into the 27" iMac, and B) even if you CAN get digital input, being limited to 720p (Belkin AV360™ Mini DisplayPort Converter for 27" iMac. Belkin's description: Accepts full 1080p signal, provides 720p to iMac) on a 2560 x 1440 display.
You would have to ask Apple. My guess is that they don't want to get involved in HDCP support issues and besides, previously this port has been limited to output only and is still described as such on the Apple Store Tech Specs web page.
As I'm nearly 63 years old, I'm absolutely gobsmacked at the progress in computer technology from my first Sinclair Z80 to my Amiga 1000 to my first Mac -- a IIci ($5000!), to now, but I thought the whole idea was to make things easier.
Still have a few years on you. (Let's just say I'm on the high side of 65 and leave it at that.) I started with the Polymorphic 88, System 16 (S-100, 8080 processor with all of 16 K of memory) and worked my way through an Apple //, Mac 128K, Mac IIci, 8500AV, two G4s, a PPC G5, and am now on my first Intel Core Duo laptop. (The last five are still "in service" and the Poly-88 is somewhere in the storage shed.) They say that a program expands to occupy the memory available to contain it. In a similar manner, as things become "easier," we tend to expand our horizons into more difficult fields of endeavor.
Do you know of a good place to start to try to learn about this stuff?
Normally in a case like this, I would recommend you contact your local Mac/Apple User Group and see if they have an active Video SIG. By discussing your goals and available hardware/software, they may be able to find a work flow that meets your needs, minimizes your investment in time and effort, and avoids the need to purchase anything additional. For instance, is it your intention to post media on the internet, archive it for future editing purposes, distribute it to immediate friends and/or relatives, what is more important—time or quality of your content, what do you mean by "clean up," etc? These are likely the questions that will determine which work flows best suits your needs and in which order they should be applied.

  • Nf750-g55 problem installing windows7 home premium 64bit

so i am attempting to build a htpc for a friend. got all the parts in the mail and started assembling the thing. installed the the m/b, cpu, hard drive, DVD drive, and power supply into the case and hooked up a old VGA CRT monitor and PS/2 keyboard and mouse. attempted to load the OS (specifically Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM)(purchased from newegg) which is where my problems started.  pardon the length here but i will try to be as detailed as possible to describe the issues.
initial boot, everything powers up goes through the MB splash screen and it asks for bootable media.
i put the install disk in the DVD and reboot, it comes up and boots from the DVD and brings up the windows install desktop. copies files, expands files, installs features and updates then auto shuts down to reboot.
on reboot it brings up the desktop and starts flashing the 3 little dots next to the words completing installation. it does this for approximately 2 Min's then the computer crashes and app 20 seconds later the monitor led turns from green to amber for loss of video signal.
computer reboots with MB splash screen then brings up the windows shut down unexpectedly screen "what do you want to do?"
if i start windows normally it brings up the windows splash screen with the 4 fireflies that turn into the windows icon, blinks once then black screens. few secs later the monitor led goes amber and the system reboots.
if i start in safe mode it will go Through the windows splash screen to the desktop and gives me the message "cannot finish installation in safe mode please reboot"
as of this time i have swapped the memory out for the smaller module listed in my Sig. i started with a 4GB module of gskill ripjaw but have read that windows7 sometimes doesn't like more then 2 GB installed so used a spare i had laying around. i also tried another harddrive, i have run memtest86 as well as a harddrive diagnostic on the installed drive. i have swapped the drive sata cables around a bit. currently have hd in sata1 and DVD in sata4.
i reflashed the bios from v1.3 to v1.5 with no change in the symptoms.
i also unplugged everything from the front panel of the case except for the power/reset switches and power/hdd LEDs. no overclocking. insured the overclock dips on the MB were set in the off position.
i also have tried to install both 32 and 64 bit versions of 7 ultimate. both fail in the exact same way. however a copy of server2008 32bit installed just fine.
i made a tech support ticket with msi and hit the highlights in my post there, the response was that this type of concern is typically caused by memory issues but since i had both swapped in another memory module and run memtest that it was likely a MB issue and i should contact my reseller for an exchange.
before making an rma request i wanted to touch base here and see if anyone might have a solution that wont require me waiting another week or so to get this thing up and running. it almost sounds like i may have a driver type issue that is causing things to wig out on me, since it boots OK in safe mode but not in normal mode. but i really dont have any idea on how to test that theory.
in advance thank you for any suggestions

well i tried out a diferent dvd and cable today and no go on a resolution that way.  and yes the ram module is in the dimm1 slot
as a hail mary i stuck my HD into my other computer and installed the os that way and then ran the msi driver disk as well before parking the HD back in the other case. amazingly the thing booted up just fine and loaded a bunch of drivers. everything seemed ok until i rebooted and got a bsod during loading into windows. at least now i have a direction to go with. the minidump info listed the nvlddmkm.sys driver as the fault. from a quick websearch this seems to be a issue with the nvidia driver sets. i am currently attempting to locate a stable driver set version. will post back with either success or failure results

  • Hard Drive Failure and Data Recovery

I am pretty sure I am SOL - but thought I'd try one last "Hail Mary" before throwing in the towel - to see if anyone here might have a solution I haven't thought of or am not aware of:
My wife's Macbook wouldn't boot today - instead she was greeted by the dreaded blinking question mark.
Macbook (2006) 4 gb ram - OSX 10.6.6 120GB internal HD (the internal HD is the problem).
I shut it down and attached a USB external HD that has a copy of OSX on it and it booted fine - but the internal HD would not mount. I tried both Drive Genius and Disk Warrior - neither program sees the damaged hard drive. I then launched Disk Utility - it sees the damaged HD as an UNINITIALIZED  disk - and the only options are to initialize it - all the repair options are grayed out.
So I went poking around on the net looking for hard drive problems that the leading disk recovery programs can not fix and stumbled on to a thread discussing invalid sibling links - which is apparently the Achilles Heal of the OSX HFS file system - and can render the data on a HD inaccessible.
The thread went on to discuss a possible fix by running a series of fsck_hfs commands from the terminal window - or if the HD will mount - via single user mode or verbose login. Other options included attaching the problem Mac to another Mac via Target Disk Mode and many had success being able to see and repair the drive that way.
If anyone is interested in the details of this fix you can sift through this thread on Mac OSX Hints:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070204093925888
Unfortunately for me - nothing is working. The only way I can get Disk Utility to see the damaged drive is if I boot from the external USB HD. And As I mentioned above -  Disk Utility only sees it as an uninitialized drive.
If I attach the Macbook to my MacPro in Target Disk Mode - the Macbook starts up in TDM but of course the HD never mounts on my MacPro and neither Disk Utility, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior are able to see the damaged macbook drive - in TDM none of these programs even show that the physical drive exists.
So, short of re-initializing the drive and thus loosing all the data - anyone out there in cyber space have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Just an update and a new question - I decided to go ahead a reformat the drive - but Disk Utility is giving me the following error message:
    Disk Erase Failed with Error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed.
    Cannot allocate memory.
So, does this sound like a hardware problem as oppossed to just a corrupted file system?
    Thanks!

  • Unable to print from Photoshop CS4 in an iMac OS 10.6.3 to large format printer Epson 11880

Hi there! I was wondering if you could help me with this case.
Old computer: Mac G4  (purchased in 2002)
    Old OS: OS 10.4.11  (Tiger)
    CPU: Dual 1.25 GHz
    Memory: 2 RAM
    Software: Photoshop 7
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880 (64” wide monster). Prints large posters, banners, etc.
As you can see, it is time for an upgrade...
    New computer: iMac
New OS: OS 10.6.3  (Snow Leopard)
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
    Memory: 16 GB
    Software: Photoshop CS4
Hardware: Large format printer: Epson 11880
Situation: We hooked up everything and managed to print on the 11880 printer 2 times and printed two large format prints. On the third attempt, we encountered a serious problem...
Problem: After opening a file in Photoshop and sending it out for printing in the large format Epson printer, the file goes to the printer queue and stays there for 6 seconds, and then it disappears. It does not print. :-(
What we have done so far:
We made sure we downloaded the latest printer driver for this printer from Epson’s website.
The printer driver is correct. The computer talks to the printer and we are able to execute all the commands from the printer utilities panel. (i.e. check ink levels, clean heads, etc.)
And yes, the printer is okay, because we have been using it with the old G4 machine for about a year.
This problem got so frustrating, that we thought that something we transferred during the computer installation might be the culprit. So at one point we erased the hard drive on the new computer and reinstalled the operating system, and have not put any files from any old computers into this machine. The computer has nothing else in it. Except: The operating systems, and the Mac applications that come when the Mac comes out of the box. The only other program installed in it is Photoshop CS4 and the printer driver.
We were wondering if this was just a printing problem, period. So we added a small printer to the computer - and old Epson 2200 we have. We sent a file to this printer and there is not problem.
Perhaps, the file size might have been an issue? It does not matter. We can send a large 60 MB file to the printer or a small photograph measuring only 8 x 10, and these will linger in the queue for 6 seconds, and disappear never to be printed.
Temporary relief came when we got rid of Adobe Photoshop’s Preferences file. After getting rid of the file and allowing Photoshop to reconstruct it, we managed to print two large files on the printer. Then it failed again. Tried getting rid of the preferences again, and the trick did not work anymore. :-(
Another temporary relief came when we created another user in the computer. On the new user account it printed again a couple of times only to fail later.
And yes, the printer WILL print from other Mac programs. If for instance, we open a file on Preview, and send it to the printer and the file will be printed. And yes, we have managed to print very large files with this method.
In the last couple of days, we have spent 3 hours on the phone with the guys at Epson. They verified the driver and because the computer seems to be communicating with the printer and printing from other Mac applications, they suspected that the problem is with Adobe.
We called Adobe once, and spent 30 minutes with an Indian fellow who concluded that the problem was with how the computer handles the spooling. According to him, Photoshop sends the file to the computer and the computer seems to get rid of it. So he passed the buck and told us that the problem was with Apple.
We called Apple and spoke for 30 minutes with a friendly technician, who transferred us to a higher level techno-geek. I spent 1 more hour on the phone with Apple, and we tried everything. We went through Adobe’s knowledgebase and tried every suggested solution (see Adobe’s KB406452). It was with him that we found a temporary fix of removing the Preferences file, but the solution was short lived. He finally thought the problem was with Adobe as the printer is able to print from all applications EXCEPT Adobe Photoshop.
We called Adobe for the second time...and after waiting on hold from 1 entire hour, we got an Indian technician, that bless his heart, had a very thick accent and had no expertise, in my opinion. He was good at collecting data and he even made me share my computer screen so that he could troubleshoot the problem. After being constantly put on hold by him (because he had to consult with someone else), he passed the buck and said that it was Apple’s problem. I just told him that it was not as likely because all programs print EXCEPT Photoshop. After trying what I would consider a “hail Mary” of DELETING all the printers from my Library folder, and not replacing them, he recorded a case number for another Adobe technician to call us in a few days.
Because the above technician completely blew the Library, I just erased and reinstalled the OS. This time, I did not allow the OS to be updated - from 10.6.2 (that comes in the box), to 10.6.3. We tried printing using the 10.6.2 and had the same problem. :-(
Conclusion: I think it is a problem of Adobe CS4 not getting along with Apple’s new operating system. The Epson printer is doing fine, because it has been a product that has been in the market for almost 3 years. What is disappointing is that none of the companies wants to man up and say that it is a problem and that they are willing to work on it. Instead they pass the buck to the next company.
I can’t believe I am the only person experiencing this. Has anyone had this problem, and have you found a solution or workaround for it?

Dear Doyle, John and Gator Soup,
Thank you for your kind replies to my problem.
PS is assigned 70% RAM. In fact, I have never had so much RAM in my life. Files open at lightning fast speed! :-)  We have never considered a RIP as we do not have an intense workload. In fact all the files we have tried to print print well on our old G4 with Tiger and Photoshop 7, which at the moment has saved our butt. However it would be nice to get the new faster machine with Photoshop CS4 to talk to the Epson 11880.
Yes, we are printing directly to the printer. We have hooked up the computer via a 6 ft USB cable to the unit.
The specs and pixel dimensions of a typical file we print are:
Type of file: tif  (in this case it is an RGB file) // However, we avoid any color management from the computer or the printer when printing it at this time.
    File size: 60 MB
    Pixel size: 6796 x 3100
    Print size: 34" x 16" @ 200 dpi
I have not tried saving it as a pdf yet. Will try that next.
I did go to the Console on the Mac though, and recorded its activity between 5:14 pm - 5:19 pm when I tried to print a file.
Remember, the symptoms are:  We send a file to the printer...The file goes to the printer queue, and it lingers there for 6 seconds. The file then disappears.
Although there is a cryptic message of "invalid colorspace" in the log, I don't believe that the file is corrupt. First because we have tried several files, second because smaller versions of these can be printed in another Epson 2200 printer, and third because the large format images can still be printed using our old G4 machine with Tiger and Photoshop 7.
This might provide me with extra ammunition for when I call both Adobe and Apple on Monday. Apple has been quite good on customer support - particularly when they upgrade you to higher level geeks. ;-)   Do you have any idea I what time I should call Adobe so that I can get people on the western hemisphere to answer the phone? It seems that after a certain time they start speaking with an Indian accent over there.

  • Creative Labs Customer Supp

    Or moreover, the lack thereof.
First you come out with the Zen Vision player with documentation so sparse that sellers like Amazon.com are asking for additional user manuals to post [at least they were when I bought mine].
Then for customer support you DON"T have an 800 number. Not good, especially considering how long AND how unresolved my contacts are with you.
After my last lengthy call and suggestions that didn't work here I am still needing to call again to get something to work that hasn't in spite of many phone calls and plenty of expensi've long distance airtime [because you are so cheap as to not have an 800 number - not to mention it would be nice if I was given a real "FIX" - or better yet just never had the problem.
Ironically on the day of my last call to you I needed to call Canon for support. THEY HAVE AN 800 NUMBER, AND HAD NO WAIT. HECK, BEST OF ALL THEY ARE SHIPPING ME A NEW UNIT TO SWAP OUT, EXPRESS PAID POSTAGE AT THEIR EXPENSE.
Oh, and by the way, when I was calling you abvout my last (unresolved) problem I was having to ask what the screw that had fallen out was for. Better yet, on a player treted as gently as they come what the heck is a screw doing falling out??
Count me as not ever buying another Creative Labs product. Too bad, I had liked my last one. But then again it worked!

Cat... I believe my point is relevant.
Which is instead of being distracted by a 'hail mary' frivolous law suit,
Creative should focus their energy on creating a better product with better
    customer support.
Improving customer support falls under the topic of Creative Labs Customer Support
    don't you think?

  • I have run the gambit of Home Sharing Trouble Shooting and still have no shared folder on my Touch.  WTH?

I'm at a loss.  I have done everything on Apple's Troubleshooting list to try to access my laptops music files on my Touch, but there is still no Shared folder in the More section of my Touch's music.  I've restarted and updated everything, unathorized and reauthorized both devices, toggled home sharing on/off, allowed the relevant ports to pass through my router's Firewall, and have turned off the Firewall on my laptop.  Nothing.  Nada.  It is a 4th gen Touch.  ***.
Does anybody have a hail mary of an idea to get this freaking home sharing to work on my Touch?  Grrrr.

So. When i turn search for my library from my ipad the little grey boxes appear with the names of the tv shows on them before the artwork is loaded. but on the 5 shows im having an issue with they remain blank.
I then deleted thhe 5 shows from my library and then re added one ofthem only changing the info-name to aaaaaaa and changing it from a home movie to tv programe. This did work for a short while. the name appeared on my ipad with the correct tv show cover. then after about a minute the name went blank and the album cover changed to a cd in my music library.
I had a similar issue with some of my other tv shows. i.e. when i tapped american dad on my i pad, there was 2 little boxes that said no season. so i clicked on the top one and it was just the pilot. so i went in to itunes to investigate and in the metadata the artist had been filled in as (1). so i deleted the number from the artist pane and that sorted that issue out. i checked the rest of the tv programs and there were a few issues  but using the same method that sorted them all out.
I then went back to sort out the other 5 shows out. i ticked every box in the metadata to clear everything and put the show name as show 1. and changed from home video to tv program. when i added the show again the same thing happened. Appears with no show name. then after a minute it changes the picture again. Ill keep posting updates until its fixed. cheers

  • Speed availability at my location

Hoping someone can give some insight on how to fix this problem.
I currently live less than 2500 feet from the central office and my availability is provisioned at up to 3.0 mbps. When the technician came out to my home to connect the wires, he said he was able to get 10 mbps on my line. As a side note, I used to be located over 9000 feet from this same central office and was receiving 7.0 mbps. I've contacted sales/tech support numerous times to try and get my speed cap increased, but I keep getting punted back and forth. Sales states they can't increase my speed because the cap is set to 3 mbps, and tech states they cannot increase my speed because I'm maxed out at what I am currently provisioned for. When the tech agents test my line, they've reported back speeds on my line of between 7-9 mbps each time. I've had a sales and tech agent on a conference call and still can't get a resolution.
What else can I do to try and get my speed cap increased?

Thanks for your help Smith6612! I got the same run around answer, so any hail mary attempt you can make is very much appreciated.
If it helps, here is some info I pulled from my modem and traceroute. Not sure what to make of the traceroute.

  • Multiple (but not all) VPN clients failing in Windows 8 and 8.1

Big question for VPN gurus, with a long story.  I got a new machine with Windows 8 in late December 2012.  I work remotely
for a bunch of different customers, so 100% of my work is done via VPNs.  My customers use a wide variety of VPN types.  These were all working fine up through early December 2013.  Suddenly a bunch of them stopped working.  I tried a ton
    of stuff:
    - Uninstalling all VPN clients and reinstalling them one at a time
    - Reinstalling / updating network drivers
    - Turning off and uninstalling antivirus and firewall software
    - Verified problem was on my machine, not local network, both by testing other machines on local network and by testing this machine on other networks
The following VPN clients would not work:
    Cisco VPN Client
    FortiSSL
    Microsoft built-in
The following VPN clients had no problems:
    Cisco AnyConnect
    ShrewSoft
    Juniper web-based SSL VPN
    Check Point web-based SSL VPN
    As you can imagine, having to use a second (Windows XP) machine to connect to half my customers was a source of some serious headaches.  After 3 weeks of beating my head against this, I finally upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1.  The hail mary worked;
    my VPN problems went away!
Two weeks later, the exact same symptoms resurfaced.  I've gone back through a bunch of the steps that didn't help the first time around, with the same results.  I expect a system refresh would probably do the trick, probably temporarily like the
OS upgrade, but I can't afford to spend a week reinstalling dozens of critical applications only to have the problem resurface after another couple of weeks.
At this point, the closest thing I have to a clue is that in both cases the problems started soon after installing an update to the Cisco AnyConnect client.  After uninstalling the client, the problems do not go away.
Exactly what do I mean when I say the VPN clients don't work?  That varies from one client to the next:
    Microsoft built-in: Error 720
FortiSSL: variable - sometimes won't finish connecting, sometimes connects for about a second
Cisco: variable - sometimes won't finish connecting, sometimes "connects" but I can't access anything
Has anybody seen this sort of behavior before?  Any suggestions for fixes I may not have tried yet?  Thanks in advance.

    Hi.
I have been similar issues with VPN clients. In my case cause of this problems seems to be "Deterministic Network Enhancer". So turning this component on and off usually helps.
Actually I writed one script to fix this probleem for my clients.
    <#
    .Synopsis
This script is ment for a fixing of network problems which may occur when you use Windows 8/8.1 with Client Hyper-V
    .DESCRIPTION
This script will disable and then enable again Deterministic Network Enhancer (dni_dne) component from network connections.
Parameter RegisterScheduledTask will register this script as a scheduled task which will be triggered at every  time when computer starts.
    .EXAMPLE
       Fix-Network.ps1
    .EXAMPLE
       Fix-Network.ps1 -RegisterScheduledTask
    #>
    param
        [switch]$RegisterScheduledTask
    function Test-IsRunAsAdministrator
       $currentUser = New-Object Security.Principal.WindowsPrincipal( [Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity]::GetCurrent())
       $currentUser.IsInRole( [Security.Principal.WindowsBuiltInRole]::Administrator)
    function Get-RunAsAdministrator
        if(!(Test-IsRunAsAdministrator))
            [string[]]$argumentList = @('-NoProfile' , '-File', $MyInvocation.ScriptName)
            if($RegisterScheduledTask)
                $argumentList += '-RegisterScheduledTask'
            Start-Process PowerShell.exe -Verb Runas -WorkingDirectory $PWD.Path -ArgumentList $argumentList
            break
    Get-RunAsAdministrator
    if($RegisterScheduledTask)
        $actionArgument = '-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File  "' + $PSCommandPath + '"'
        $action = New-ScheduledTaskAction -Execute "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe" -Argument $actionArgument
        $trigger  = New-ScheduledTaskTrigger -AtStartup
$principal = New-ScheduledTaskPrincipal "SYSTEM" -LogonType ServiceAccount -RunLevel Highest
        Register-ScheduledTask -TaskName Fix-Network -Trigger $trigger -Action $action -description "Fix network for Windows 6.X with Hyper-V" -Principal $principal
    else
        $bindings = Get-NetAdapterBinding | Where-Object { ($_.ComponentID -eq "dni_dne") -and ($_.Enabled)}
        $bindings | Set-NetAdapterBinding -Enabled $false
        $bindings | Set-NetAdapterBinding -Enabled $true
        $date = Get-Date

    Hope that this will help.

  • Can I get my money back please

I have allready waisted over 10 hours on that software and the person at the store say that "Sofware can't be return" if the box is open
200$ is a lot of money for me so please Mr Adobe can you fix it or give me my money back, Already try the software on my PC and my MAC and it's the same result
    Pinnacle work Perfect
    IMovie Work Perfect
CyberLink Power Director 10 (Trial) Work Perfect
I Bought your software thinking that Adobe Premiere was the BEST in is class  but this one just don't work .... please read my other post

    Hello Steve
1-  I don't work at Adobe so I didn't know that the site was not hone or monitored by Adobe ... sorry
2- If you look back at my post at no point I'm been aggressive or in polite event after waisting about 15H on a software that from what the salesman said, was easy as pie and then just got told by the same salesman that there was no refund on software.
3- I never said bad comment on the software it self or the Adobe Cie, on the contrary I choose Premiere because it was from Adobe and I trust that Cie.
4- I don't really care that they stop making adobe Premiere in 2003 ... they start using intel cpu in mac computer in 2003 ... do you care ?    I bought a software called ADOBE PREMIERE Elements 10 so again ... sorry
5- I could have probably kept going in the same post and I do apologize about that but at the end of your last post you basically told me ... " Good luck you are on your hone" so basically the new post was more like a Hail Mary to try to get my money back, I heaven said PLEASE.
6- I did finally called Adobe "INDIA" or "Canada" not sure but the tech was really funny and nice but I could not understand half the word he said, he did made me realize that I was running my audio at 44KHz and that trunked version of adobe premiere element only let you import audio at 48KHz
and that you can't make your hone Template so  switch all my DAW to 48KHz and now I have been copying stuff from old DV tape , next i'm going back on my HD Cam.
P.S. One of the only thing I could understand from my friend in India is that the RED line on top of the timeline is only there to tell you that the video as not been Render yet nothing to do with the format import ... good thing to put in your next Tutorial
Anyway Thanks for all your help have a nice night

  • Aperture 3 and MobileMe Galleries created in iPhoto

I wanted to post this to hopefully help someone else should they run into the same thing.
I recently upgraded from point and shoot camera's to a higher quality camera, so I also decided that it was time to upgrade from iPhoto to something better.  I decided on Aperture as I am not quite ready to commit to the expense and time to learn something as complex as Photoshop.
Well, the first time I opened Aperture and told it to import my iPhoto library, it worked without any difficulty.  But, I noticed something was missing.  My MobileMe galleries where not displayed in the inspector window for Aperture.  I could not for the life of me, figure out how to get them to show up in there either.
I went to the Apple store and talked to some Aperture users there and no one could seem to tell me how to fix this.  It was even more frustrating because all of my photo albums from FaceBook came up in Aperture just fine.
Finally in a last ditch, hail mary pass, of an idea, I went to the web UI for my MobileMe galleries.  I figured that maybe if I edited something about those galleries, they would then show up in Aperture.
Well, I went into the properties for one of the galleries that I was not seeing in Aperture, and low and behold, there in the properties was an option to choose what application that gallery would sync to.  The only options are iPhoto or Aperture, so I changed each gallery to show Aperture as the chosen app to sync with.
Finally they now show in Aperture, of course, as you might expect, they no longer show in iPhoto.
I have no idea why the Import process does not warn you about this, and / or offer to change them for you, but it was very frustrating.
If this can help someone else new to Aperture to avoid this frustration, then I am glad.

Thanks Richard, very helpful. I wondered why I couldn't see my old mobileme galleries in Aperture.
I have swapped between iPhoto '09, Aperture 3, iPhoto '11 and now back to Aperture. Whilst I love the ease of use and relative speed of iPhoto, Aperture's adjustments and masters/versions handling has the edge for me now that my masters collection is too big for my MBP. And with a clean install of Lion my machine now seems more responsive than it has been for a while.
Changing the setting of each gallery is a bit dull, is there a global 'manage mobile me galleries with iPhoto/Aperture' setting anywhere?

  • Best practices for saving files when emailing to the media?

I'm pretty much an Ai imposter. I have Illustrator cs4 (14.0.0) and the way I use it is to cobble my designs together from iStock vector files and a lot of trial and error. Occasionally my husband throws me a lifeline because he is skilled with PhotoShop. As a small business owner, I am dying to find the time to take a course but right now I am just trying to float around the forums and learn what I can. Basically I flail about near the computer and the design sloooowly and somewhat mysteriously comes together. It's getting faster and is kind of fun, unless I get stuck.
This week I had a problem with an ad I designed for a very small community orchestra's printed programs. I send them a pdf first, and when they view it on their screens using inDesign they see the whole image but when it printed it omitted an element (a sunburst in the background). They thought it had something to do with that element being in color rather than greyscale (though there were other elements that survived and they were the exact same color so I was skeptical). I sent a greyscale file, no luck. I sent them the Ai file, but that apparently "crashed" their iD and now they believe I've sent a corrupted file. They aren't very adobe-savvy, either.
I've designed and emailed no fewer than 9 other ads to other print & online media organizations this year and never had a problem. The file looks fine to me in all versions I open/upload/email to myself.
You can see it here if you like: http://www.scribd.com/doc/27776704/RCMA-for-CSO-Greyscale
So here are my specific questions:
    1. How SHOULD I be saving this stuff? Is pdf the mark of a rookie?
    2. What settings should I be looking at when/before saving? I read about overprint, for example, and did try that with one of the versions I sent them to no avail. I don't really know what that does, so I was just trying a hail mary there anyway.
    Thanks for your time!

PDF is the modern way of sending files  but what you might want to do is in this case select the art in question and go to Object>Flatten Transparency
then save it as a pdf or as an ai file when sending the file to them zip it if they have windows based computers or stuffit if they have Mac actually zip is good for both.
It is safer to send it as an archive then as an ai file.

  • IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?

My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
    1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
    2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
    - blowing dust out of the back with canned air
    - checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
    - fixing permissions from normal boot
    - boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
    - fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
    - getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
    - clearing PRAM
    - resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
    - Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
    - virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)

Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
    iStat currently shows:
    HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
    ==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]

  • Is it possible to downsize a large image on the server side (before serving it to the user)?

One of the banes of my existence is resizing the same image several times because of the various contexts it appears in. For example, the main image in an article will appear bigger than it will on the index page, where many article teasers are placed. Then there's the image that goes in the Facebook "share" og. Then there's... you get the idea.
Same image, different contexts, lots of Photoshop resizing, lots of files to keep track of... but I save on bandwidth.
On the flip side, I can target the same (large) image and simply downsize via traditional HTML (width/height) on the browser end, but that will mean downloading a file that is 50-75% larger than what is actually needed. If the front page teaser displays a 1280px image at 500px, that's a huge (and potentially costly) waste of bandwidth.
    HOWEVER...
If I could do the same thing on the SERVER side... in other words, tell the server to take only the pixels it needs from the (large) image and serve only THOSE to the end user... then the same image could be used in each and every context, and only the necessary bandwidth is used.
Is this do-able? If so, what is the process formally called, and where would I begin to learn how to do it?
    Thanks!

That's amazing. I didn't think it was possible without saving files on the server first.
This will suit my needs just fine, but allow me to push my luck even further with the following "hail mary" question : would it be possible for the server to serve the PNG with a width of 100% of the container? In other words, the behavior would mimic width=100% but the server would still only serve as many bytes as are needed to fill that space.
Not only would I not have to create separate files for every resize (we fixed that problem with your suggestion) but I wouldn't even have to customize every link to a specific size.
I'm not expecting an affirmative on this one, but it was worth asking. =)
