Palm T/X dead or dying

I purchased my t/x 13 to 14 months ago I've only used it since the first of August because I purchased a life-drive right after that.  This started Weaknesses 01-Oct-08 all day it would not come on with any kind of reset soft or hard. I plugged  in the charger yesterday morning and it came on the icons you could from the top to half way down and the reset of the screen was like a light blue and red curtain. I pressed the reset button it went black it stayed like that the rest of the day. I tried recharging again this morning the same as yesterday half the screen was good the rest was not, so I tried a hard reset went black and no matter what I do it stays that way, but in the morning it will probably do what its done for the last two. What could this be or what do I need to purchase as in hardware to fix it?
thank you for any help

The digitizer is typically directly on top of the display screen. They are 2 different parts.
Here is a link to pdaparts.com for the screen and digitizer.

  • Palm life drive dead?

I'm having trouble with my palm lifedrive. I turned it on this morning and all I get is the Palmone screen and I'm unable to do anything. I tried a hard and soft rest. No luck. Just the same screen and a scratchy noise. Is my palm dead. What can I do? How can I replace it?

When you did the hard reset did you get the erase all data message?
Have you tried a warm reset to see if a 3rd party app. or corruption on the device may be causing the issue?

You can try to open up your device and remove the battery.
First of all, remember that if you open up your device and it is still under warranty, you will lose your warranty priveledges. Now, here is the information.
I copied and pasted this from another post - I hope this will help you!!
Following the suggested steps of someone named Saguasian on one of the Palm forums, I repaired my dead, out of warranty Tungsten E2 today. HOORAY!!!
    · unscrewed 4 screws, being careful not to strip them (I used a very small flat-bladed (not phillips) screwdriver and used a metal file to slightly change the width of the screwdriver blade so it fit tighly into the strange star-shaped screw-head slots on the Palm's four screws).
    · unsnapped the case using the heel of a plastic spoon
    · carefully unhooked the Li-Ion battery from the circuit board (it has a tiny plug)
    · plugged in pwr adapter...
    · Palm splashscreen!!!
    · Hooray!!! never thought i'd be so happy to see that screen start up... -
    · unhooked pwr
    · plugged Li-Ion battery back to circuit board...
    · Palm splashscreen again!!!
    · snapped the case back on, screws in. Presto!
The date and time was reset, but thanks to the in built memory, all my data, apps, games and hi scores were intact! - so far the Palm works like a charm and reports a full charge on the battery.
Disclaimer - I am by no means a palm technician, but I don't mind undertaking simple "fixes" on computers and other machines. So i took a chance at fixing this myself. Just thought i'd share my findings and extend my thanks for Saguastian, cos i was very frustrated that my palm quit on me in just 7 months.
Also, thanks to Gail for the caution about the small pieces to the "on button". She said if you're not careful the little pieces can come out and get lost. I put a temporary piece of cellotape over the on button just in case…
    Let us know what happens!!
    Good Luck!

  • Is my G4 dead or dying?

My 8 year old G4 won't start up. Instead it goes click..click..click... etc at about 1 click/second. I booted up with the installation disk to get to Disk Utilities, but no options were highlighted.
Is this the hard drive dying or dead...or something else? What can I do? Is it dead?

As long as it is the same type of drive (e.g. IDE), just substitute it for the other drive and try it out. Your installation disk should boot and allow you to use diskutility to find the drive. It may not be Mac usable, but the utility should be able to see the drive. With the age and the symptoms you describe there is about a 99.95% probability that the hd is 10-7 aka fubar. Time to pry out the $50 and buy another one.

  • What are symptoms of dead or dying battery?

Besides date & time (which have been fine), what are the other symptoms of a battery that is dying?
I'm still on my quest to find whatever might be causing or contributing to occasional system freezes. At this stage, I will rule out nothing.
    Thanks!

    Thanks, Cornelius.
I'll check the battery as you suggested.
My system (10.4.11) has been freezing every couple of days over the past few months. No error message, such as for a kernel panic; it just freezes, forcing a restart. Since first reporting it here, I've followed the suggestions to (and not necessarily in this order):
    Repair permissions
    Run Applejack
    Run Disk Warrior
    Restarted in Safe Mode
Run the Apple Extended Hardware Test
Removed all third-party software (most recently Norton Anti-Virus) and any software that automatically loaded on startup or login.
Wiped (zeroed the data) and reformatted the drive
    Run MemTest
I've run some of those tests more than once.
    The only peripherals are:
    - Two external drives and a Digidesign audio interface on Firewire
    - A cable modem and router on Ethernet
    - A printer and an iLok dongle on USB (in addition to monitor and keyboard/mouse)
The freezes have occurred even when the the computer was idle, with anywhere from 0 to 10% CPU activity.
    Everything seems to behave properly.
    Any other ideas?

  • Dead or dying Airport Express?

OK, long story short: I've got 2 Macs, an Airport Extreme Base and an Airport Express. Everything worked perfectly until the Internet connection from the Express grew more and more erratic. I isolated the Express as the problem, updated the firmware, reset it, restarted it, soft reset, hard reset, power cycled, changed outlets, tried every trick in the book, blah blah blah. It glows green, sees the network fine but Internet speeds range from good to non-existent, intermittently. Both computers run great off the Extreme Base Station.
So: Is it possible my Express is simply dying? Or is there something else I haven't tried?

This is the same problem I am having, in fact... It has gotten to the point where it no longer loads anything at all. Resetting seems to bring it to life for about 30 seconds, and then it promptly craps out again. I've tried all the different firmware versions, hard and soft resets, power cycling etc. and nothing is working. Any ideas?

  • Solution for dead and dying Bretford carts

I teach 7th grade social studies at a middle school in SC with 360 iTouches and more than 100 iPads.  We use what I believe is the first generation Bretford cart to charge and sync groups of 40 (20 per drawer).  At the beginning of the year one of our carts simply had no power to either drawer.  I have followed the trouble shooting tips of plugging and unplugging power supply cables.  I even replaced the main power supply cable with a cart that was functioning.  The only "electrical" components appear to be where the USB cables gather inside the drawer and a junction box that splits the power for the two drawers.
I am looking for suggestions for repair or replacement.
The warranty is out on the cart and Bretford's suggestion is to ship it back to them.  That does not make a lot of sense.  Currently, I am using four brand new 12-port usb hubs to charge and sync our dead cart.  But these have already started having issues.  I am getting error messages that sycning and charging are not supported on the device.
Does anyone have any suggestions for either repairing the Bretford cart or a proven, reliable replacement?

I cannot find the solution to this Bretford cart in the forum; can someone direct me to the answer?  I have a similar problem but it specifically is related not to the power to the cart but to the USB cable going to the lower drawer which apparently was torn by a user (it has only one end with the USB connection; the other is torn wire).  I need to replace it but don't know if this is possible. Does anyone know? There is no obvious way to take the cart apart to even get to the metal "box" in the drawer where the other end of the USB cable would go. Any suggestions?

  • White MacBook dead or dying. Apple Store store screwing me.

I have had an unfortunate event. Two days ago my white MacBook has started to misbehave. I have turned it on, and it powered itself off after a minute. It probably did that about 4-5 times. Eventually, it booted and stayed on for the rest of the day. This has happened with a fully charged battery and plugged-in. Since it has worked for the rest of the day, I did not think more of it. Weird boots have happened before rarely.
Yesterday, it booted fine, but the keyboard was misbehaving. The option key was stuck in the ON postion without being physically pressed. Some letters worked, others created the option+letter key combination.
So, I have taken it to the Apple Store. I have a got a call an hour later saying that he removed the top case and found a small stain in the bottom-right side of the keyboard, which according to him is evidence of liquid damage. The warranty has been voided. The warranty was actually going to expire today on the 14th.
I find this highly suspicious. I have taken great care of it. Besides a scratch or paint transfer on the bottom case next to the exhaust, which I have no idea how it happened, and yellowing of the touchpad, it looks like new. I have read that the MacBooks turn yellow, mine has in less than a month of use. Maybe, due to heat, it has turned yellow or brown inside.
It's pssible they saw that my warranty was going to expire today and thought to screw me. If it's going to expire in one day, why help him?
They want $230. $130 for the top case. $100 for work. I told him to disassemble it further due to the weird boots. I have not yet received a call back if he has found more damage.
I've seen laptops taking a bath. You could float Noah's ark on them. They have major flooding stains from coke, smoothies, and other beverages. I don't drink that suff, nor have I on the day in question, nor did anyone else use it.
It's my only machine. My only means of communication with the planet is my iPhone. Suggestions?
    Thank you.

So, I thought that I should give an update. After the initial quote for $230 ($130 for the top case and $100 for work) to fix it due to liquid damage, I decided to wait a few days before going back to the Apple Store to research the issue. After a few days, I went to the store. The tech who quoted me the price was not there. When I asked when he will be there, I was told that they can't give out his schedule. One of the Genius Bar employees gave me a new price: $750. A new white MacBook is $900 with the education discount.
When I heard that price, I told him to keep it. I decided to call Apple customer support. I spoke to a few people until I have eventually been redirected to someone called Jen. I explained to her that the Apple Store won't give me a straight answer nor have they proven to me that liquid damage has occurred. She wrote some notes down and said that she will email me a case number. She also said that I should take it back, try to have another tech look at it by speaking to a manager, try to take it to another store, or ship it to a depot. That email never came. She lied to me.
I decided against talking to a manager. There was another person there with an iPod. They told him that they haven't found anything wrong with it, but if he wants to buy a new one and trade the old one, he'll get a 10% discount. He was very disappointed and expected that answer.
Clearly, I think that due to the ***** economy, they are pressured to sell to keep the store afloat and deny warranty claims. I decided against speaking to the manager. He would be the one pressuring them.
I took the laptop back. It was dirty and had a few new scratches. I bought a top case from eBay. It's a factory second grade B, AKA scratched to ****, and some of the metal inside was bended, but I straighten it as much as I could. My old one hand an yellow touchpad, but no scratches. I found a YouTube video on how to disassemble and remove the top case. It's 19 screws and it takes about 5-10 minutes. For that work they were going to charge $100. Since they do this all the time, it probably takes them 10 minutes to disassembly, replace, reassemble. They charge more than a lawyer. What a ripoff!
Once I removed the top case, I was in for a shock. There was NO stain. Also, none of the Liquid Submersion Indicators (LSI) were triggered. Those LSIs are sensitive. They turn pink to red from humidity. Actual liquid does not have to touch them. They were all white. One might think that he was nice enough to clean up liquid residue if that was the case. I very much doubt that. The laptop had dust and hairs in it. If the tech had taken the time to clean up a stain, he would have spent 10 seconds with an air can to blow the dust and hairs away. This leads me to believe that he may not have disassembled the MacBook in the first place. He may have assumed that there was liquid damage on the right side since parts of the keyboard stopped working.
After installing the new top case, everything works. There are no issues whatsoever. I'm going to write an email to Steve Jobs because I've been cheated.

  • Powerbook G4 dead or dying.

It froze up..very rare. Shut down with the power key. Has not booted since.
Sometimes I get a whirring noise. Sometimes I get the grey apple screen. Sometimes I get a tone and three beeps (and the little light flashing at the bottom of the display). One time I got to the log in and it froze when I typed password and hit log in button.
I did the PRAM and PSU proceedures. Tried with battery in and out.
    Your thoughts, please.

3 beeps should mean all RAM is bad:

And do you have a titanium or aluminum Powerbook G4? The titanium has the sleep light at the base of the display and the aluminum does not.

  • Dead and dying batteries

How long do the MacBook batteries last before they're landfill?
I ask this because I currently have a Compaq whose battery failed within 7 months (my niece has the same problem - same laptop) and the new one has been in place for 2 months and is now down to 97% capacity.
Do Apple batteries have the same kinds of issues?

Battery longevity relies on quite a number of factors. This is an excellent site to get more information on how to take care of your battery for longest performance:

  • I think my PB G4 is dead, what can I do with hard drive?

I'm convinced my Powerbook G4 17" 1.5GHz OS 10.4 (let's call him "Mr. Dead") has died...maybe you can verify my diagnosis near the bottom.  Since I think he's dead, but I think the hard drive might be fine, I'd like advice on what I can do with the hard drive (for recovering data & looking at how I had the old system setup).
RESOURCES:  I have a new Macbook Pro on order ("MBP"), and access to 2 Powerbook G4 17" 1.67GHz, one running 10.4, the other 10.5.  The G4 10.4 is an sometimes-used system (let's call him "Useful"), and the G4 10.5 is one that's freshly-installed but no one is using currently (let's call him "Idle").
I thought of 2 basic options here.  Bear in mind I'm not a hardware guy.  I've installed RAM, that's it.  Though I expect I can manage to follow online instructions on how to pull a hard drive from a Powerbook.  My main worry is buying the wrong thing, which I think would be easy to do, since I don't know much about hardware tinkering.
SOLUTION 1) Put Dead's hard drive into a Firewire enclosure, then he can at least be a data drive to pull stuff off of.  Would I also be able to boot off of his install?  What do I need to know to buy the right enclosure?  Does anyone recommend any?
SOLUTION 2)  Put Dead's hard drive into one of the other Powerbooks, perhaps only temporarily.  Then I can boot it, look at it, put that Powerbook into Firewire Target Disk Mode, etc.  Will that work?  Is it hard?  Are there any issues with the dissimilarities between Dead and the other Powerbooks (the other 2 are faster chips, and one is already at 10.5)?
Are there pros/cons to solution 1 vs 2?
DIAGNOSIS:  Why I think Dead has died:
He's been acting weird the past 2 days or so, freezing, requiring hard shutdowns.  Then Monday, he wouldn't boot...what I could most often get out of it, after resetting the PMU, is to get the POST to give me 3 beeps (bad RAM).  But I've tried the RAM modules from Dead in the other Powerbooks, and the RAM is fine.
Every once in a while it ALMOST acts like it wants to boot...I get a chime, or a chime with a burst of static, but even then, the hard drive then quiets down, the screen stays black, it goes silent, and the system remains dormant.

My recollection is the bad memory slot issue only affected the 1.5 and 1.67ghz PowerBooks with 15-inch displays. However, BGreg's suggestion of RAM swapping should reveal if it somehow affected a few 17s.
Every once in a while it ALMOST acts like it wants to boot...I get a chime, or a chime with a burst of static, but even then, the hard drive then quiets down, the screen stays black, it goes silent, and the system remains dormant.
That does sound like a dead hard drive but my 17-inch 1Ghz has, like almost every other PowerBook, a dead PRAM battery and they are nearly impossible to find other than as "used/pulled." Sounds like buying used chewing gum to me!
If I let the main battery (which is an original Apple replacement and still good) run down the computer will not start from the A/C adaptor alone. If I hit the start button when the main battery is flat, I get similar noises that you describe but it goes nowhere. If I walk away, leaving the charger plugged in, the computer will boot 5-10 minutes later.
So if your are living with a dead main battery and we accept that nearly every PowerBook has a defunct backup (PRAM) battery, you won;t get far without replacing the battery. Apple no longer sells PB batteries so that throws you into the third-party pool where not all batteries are created equal.
If you want to get an new main battery, I'd try these guys first as they are an established Mac equipment vendor with excellent customer service:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple_laptop/batteries/PowerBook_G4_17
Pricey for a pre-2006 machine that may have a dead hard drive.
One old trick is to turn off the computer, remove the main battery and leave the PB on the A/C unit for 24-48 hours, then reinstall the main battery and try booting. The theory: the backup battery is rechargeable and there is the off-chance that it will get "pumped up" enough during that it will help with the next boot. It's a good step in that the only cost to you is 24-48 hours of time.

  • How to get contacts and calendar info from my old palm files

I used to use a Palm Tungsten T3. I no longer have it but until recently I still used the Palm Desktop. My computer "died" and I was able to copy all the Palm files of of it but now I have no idea how to get the contact and calendar(less important than contacts) info in some form I can use. • Time machine remembers moved or dead drives

Hello.  I've been having a hard time wording this in typical searches, to get appropriate answers.
Here goes: I have a older Mac Pro with four internal drives. One drive, my boot drive, failed.
I had been using an external drive for my Time Machine backup. On that backup, I had included a lot from the other internals.
Once I had isolated the problem (the internal was dead or dying) I made room on one of the other internals by moving things around- condensing to allow for a Restore to one of those three remaining drives, temporarily, as I planned to buy a new internal and a larger external.
Suprisingly, it went great! I ended up with a perfectly restored boot drive with all my Apps, etc.
    Now the problem:
When I turned Time Machine on, intending to create a newly restored version of my boot drive---to the new drive I just purchased, TM had a stored list of items that were spread out among the other drives, but I had moved these items all around.
I'm afraid to run TM at all now, not knowing how to tell it to ignore items, volumes, even drives; and restore only the boot drive with its applications etc., and not the various other items that were in places that no longer exist.
If this makes sense, and anyone can advise me, I will greatly appreciate it.

    David Kerman wrote:
I just restored the first drive. My system drive. I keep all of my work on the other drive except for itunes, iphoto, and iweb. I initially restored from my latest backup. Same OS. No changes.
When you restored the second time, from an earlier backup, was that the same version of OSX?
I didnt do anything about my second internal drive. The mail message was just saying "welcome to mail" and then everything was okay. But this was still a scary sight. I didn't do anything crazy in the terminal, however i did used the CS3 Clean scripts from Adobe and I think that was the real cause of all this misery.
I don't know what that is or does, so can't advise on that.
Should i just restore EVERYTHING on both drives?
If you restored an earlier version of OSX, but had data in a newer format on the other drive, yes.
If the version of your boot drive that you restored has the Adobe applications, and the data was on the second disk, perhaps. Depending on what the "Clean Scripts" thing did, you may now have a similar mismatch.
If you're concerned about Spotlight indexing, don't be. Time Machine automatically omits some things, such as system workfiles, most caches, trash, and Spotlight indexes. So Spotlight will normally re-index a restored drive.
I don't know about the Quickview and Preview problems. What, exactly, is happening there?
OH, and yes. I just read that article. I did everything it said, however I ONLY backed up the first drive. Not the second
Do you mean you don't have backups of the second drive, or didn't restore it?
If you do have mismatches between the two drives, you may need to restore one (or both) again so they're from the same time.
and I was getting a ton of SUID permission errors that couldnt be fixed.
Are the SUID errors the ones shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448 If so, you can ignore them.

Palm Desktop has the built-in ability to assign a password to your Hotsync ID.  Go to Tools > Options > Security.  (At least, that's the location in Palm Desktop 6.2.2 and I seem to recall it being the same or similar in PD 4.2.

  • Growling Powerbook - dead hard drive?

Hope someone can help with this. Basically about six months ago the PB started growling intermittently, and was stopped simply by tilting the PB slightly. Then for ages it didn't do it at all, and put it down to 'one of those things'.
In the last couple of weeks or so it started again, and today pretty much stopped being intermittent and became permanent bar for getting the machine in some ludicrous upside down position, and even then only for seconds - so basically is currently unusable.
When it growls, the beachball spins, and nothing responds.
My best guess is that it's a dead or dying hard drive - it's about 3.5 yrs old, and has been used exhaustively on a daily basis - so I can accept that it's wear and tear.
Fortunately I've been making regular back ups suspecting that this day was on it's way.
I guess I'm just trying to suss out now if it is most likely to be the hard drive, rather than, say, the board?
It's an 80GB HD, with 1GB RAM, and around 20gigs free.
    Any pointers on this appreciated.

You may be able to find a local computer shop that'd be willing to take a stab at doing the repairs, or you could ask Apple itself for an estimate of what they're likely to charge for that kind of thing.
I would definitely study the instructions carefully before attempting to replace the hard drive in a laptop for yourself. The RAM is designed to be easily accessed/removed/replaced by a user for the powerbook, but the hard drive isn't. That doesn't mean that it's impossible to reach it, just that there's going to be more finesse involved. Find a guide that has pictures, preferably, so you can have a real sense of what you'll be getting into and whether you feel comfortable that you can do it, or if you'd feel safer paying more for someone else to.
I can't say that I've ever replaced the hard drive in my powerbook, but typically hard drives are one of the easiest parts to swap in and out on a computer, because their behavior in relation to the rest of the computer is very well standardized (in contrast to say... graphics cards, which need special drivers and still may not work properly after they've gotten them).
Typically, you can just swap the other hard drive into the system, attach the cords, insert the install CD, and away you go.
What I would suggest first, however, is that you see whether your computer can be coaxed into booting off of a "LiveCD". There are several operating systems (versions of Linux and BSD especially) where you can boot and run the entire system off of the CD or DVD rather than the installed system on the hard drive. (Often this is used to either repair a system or to test for hardware compatibility). At the very least, if the boot process can run from a liveCD all right, that'll be an indication that the other components in your laptop are still working properly.
