Palm Tungsten - Screen Digitizer

No device
I have a Palm Tungsten PDA.  I have not used it in three years.  Recently I charged the battery and tried to operate it.  It asks me to tap a bullseye circle to set the screen digitizer.  It will not accept a tap anywhere on the screen.  The reset button also does not work.  How can I get beyond this and to some old contacts stored inside?

There is a multi-page thread "stickied" at the top of this board which covers pretty much every cause and fix of digitizer issues:

  • Palm Tungsten E2 glass digitizer calibration

I ordered a glass digitizer for my Palm Tungsten E2 from usedpdaparts.com on 1/29/2009, put it in myself and it has been working fine until recently.  The screen now needs frequent calibration.  Do others with glass digitizers have a similar experience?

    The digitizer can go bad.
You can try this process to see if there is any debris that is stuck under the screen edge.
Take a business card or folded piece of paper. Stick it in the gap between the edge of the screen and the case. Move around the perimeter of the screen and see if you can get out any debris.
If that doesn't work, the digitizer on the device is probably defective and needs replaced.

  • Palm Tungsten E2 screen is fading, screen resolution changed

Since yesterday, the screen of my  Palm Tungsten E2 is fading out, I have hard time to see the Apps on the screen and the writting on Memo or any Apps, all pictures on  media are blurry, it's like the screen resolution has changed, even the introduction Palm 1st screen is un-readable, blurry.
Thank you for any help if there is any.

Hi and welcome to the HP Support Community.
It doesn't sound like it, but maybe the screen brightness changed somehow.  Tap the brightness icon (the little "sun" looking icon in the top right corner of the graffiti area) and adjust the brightness.
Assuming that does nothing, try a soft reset by pressing the Reset button on the back of the device.
As a last resort, you could try a Hard Reset (after making sure you have a backup of everything).
But your description suggests a hardware issue.  You could contact Chris Short at palmdr.com who repairs Palm devices and sells refurbished ones on eBay.
Good luck, hope this helped some.

  • Wet Palm Tungsten E2

Last week I dropped my Tungsten E in a puddle while trying to unlock my car.
I picked it up and brought it home.  I made the mistake of turning it on.  Screen worked for a bit, then next time i turned it on, there was no input feedback.  I took it apart, opened the case, unplugged and took the battery out, then set it by the heater for a few days.  Put it back together, charged it up, then did a hotsync and copied all my valuable info over to my other Tungsten E2(yes, i have a backup and i stocked up before suppliers stopped stocking the E2).
Now, the buttons on the E2 work, and it will power on and off, and hotsync, but the digitizer doesn't have any input.  When i write with the stylus, nothing happens.
Will a screen/digitizer swap fix this problem?  Should I get another screen?
    Thx,
    Jeff

It is a good sign that the Palm powers up and Hotsyncs. But until you actually replace the digitizer, there's no way to know if that is the only issue. Try www.directfix.com for your parts. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

  • Palm Tungsten batteries

    Two Questions
1/ I just got a palm tungsten on eBay. The battery charges OK but tends to loss power very quickly. Palm was on for about half an hour while I was checking things out and about 1/3 power was already gone. It had been on charge for over 7 hours and looked fully charged. Should I buy a new battery and can I install it myself. I saw something in the manual stating that there are no serviceable parts and one should not remove the back.
2/ I have noticed that every time I do a hot sync I am prompted to reset the palm (I think that was the term used) I then get a screen where the calendar has been reset to the first of the year 2003, the time is 12 and I have to reset them. Is there anyway to avoid this?

    1) The battery is not very easily removed, e.g. glued or taped to the main board or panel. You can replace it yourself, though some are more easily removed than others, and you probably will need a special screwdriver.
    2) After every reset, a couple handhelds I have owned reset their date and time, though it is very annoying, it will go away eventually.

  • Exporting Palm Tungsten E2 contacts and Calendar to Microsoft Outlook 2010

How do I export Palm Tungsten E2 contacts and Calendar to Microsoft Outlook 2010.  The normal suggested  methods do not seem to work.  I have part of the contact list in the Address Book area of Outlook, but have been unable to open the window.
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.

If you sync with Palm Desktop, you should be able to do it directly on your computer:
Start Button > All Programs > Palm > PIM Conduit Sync > Sync with Outlook
On my Windows 8 installation, when I have the Start screen show all programs, there is an icon for Sync with Outlook.  I haven't tried it, because I don't like Outlook.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hard Reset Not working on Palm Tungsten E

    I have Palm Tungsten E. S.No. OOV3V5n4h511.
There is a problem with hotsync of Documents to go  and error message is coming.  I tried several times.  When I tried hard reset it is not working and only soft reset is occuring.
Please assist to overcome and reset my palm computer.

Are you sure you are doing it correcly?
A hard reset is performed by holding down the power button while sticking something thin (paper clip) into the back reset hole of your device. Keep your hand on the power button while you release the paper clip from the reset hole. The screen will now say "Palm Powered." Take your hand off the power button. You will now see a screen in 5 languages prompting you to erase all data from the palm. The screen will say "erase all data? Yes - up, no - down" and you need to click on the up arrow (silver button on the 5 way navigator on the bottom of the palm). This will erase all the info from your device.

  • Tungsten T digitizer problem

Every time I open my Tungsten T, the digitizer is off and I have to recalibrate. Will AutoDigi 5 help, or is it like Digifix, only working after a soft reset?
    Post relates to: Tungsten T

Welcome to the Forum. There some things you can try , I will start with the easy one.
If you have a screen protector that may be what is causing the problem. I have read posts that removing the screen protector and cleaning the rim of the screen with a piece of plain copy paper can solve some screen problems. Residue from the screen protector, dust, or grit can build up and cause a false tap. Also an air bubble under the screen protector can cause a false tap. Test the screen, if its works okay, put a new screen protector on, making sure you don't have any bubbles.
If that doesn't help, recently, five or six members have reported success with file called Power Digiv 2, which they downloaded at www.palmpowerups.com . You don't have to click "Buy", you can download the trial version to your computer and install, and then the next time you Hotsync your digitizer problem will be fixed. They say it is amazing. One Forum member was so impressed that he went ahead and purchased it for $16.95, incase his digitizer went out again and said it was well worth it. When you are at the palmpowerups site click the word "Download" under the third button that PowerDiGi. (Others who may read this please note it does not work on Treos, Power DiGi only works with screen resolutions of 320 X 480.)
If that doesn't help, it means your touch screen/digitizer is going out and problem will get to the point that bottom of the screen (Status Bar and keyboard) won't respond to the stylus and writing in note pad just makes scribbles all over the screen. You can get replacements at www.usedpdaparts.com and for $10.00 they will install it. You also get replacements at www.pdaparts.com and they have directions and videos for installing them yourself.
I had the touch screen/digitizer replaced in one of my T3's, but I didn't know about PowerDiGi back then. Next time, I am going to try it. Best of luck and let us know how you do.

  • "Palm Powered " screen flashing constantly after HotSync

    Bonjour !
Just after I downloaded and installed "PIM Support Update" and performed HotSync, my device, a Tungsten E2, started showing the "Palm Powered" screen for 15 seconds, then going blank for 4 seconds, then repeat constantly... !!! Impossible to do a hard reset..., it continues forever !!!!!
Anyone has an idea of what is happening and what I could do ?
    Claude
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Hi Claude, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
I don't now what "PIM Support Update" is...it is not listed on the E2 page as a support download for the E2 so perhaps you could tell us what that is and where you found it.
Anyway, this article lists common causes and fixes for Palms that are looping, flashing or frozen.  Hopefully it will help you break out of this loop.

  • Palm Tungsten E Protective case

Is there a protective case for the Palm Tungsten E that allows docking and or charging without removing the case and has a cover flap?
    Post relates to: Palm III

Any book style case will cover the front and back while leaving the top and bottom accessible for sync cable, charge cable, SD card slot and stylus. When I used a T|E and later an E2 I used a book style case from Brando because the SD card slots were in the back cover and did not press on the screen when the case was closed.

  • Palm Tungsten E2 won't shut off or reset

My batteries died, I plugged it into my USB to hotsynch and charge. When sync was complete, the screen was nonresponsive, and started to form grey lines accross the bottom, working their way up until the whole screen was pixilated. No buttons worked.
I left it on the charger figuring the batteries were just WAY dead, then did a soft reset. Unit stays on the grey "Palm Powered" screen, but there is a black bar flashing across the top, roughly 1/16 inch wide. No buttons work. Tried the hard reset, same effect.
    Now what?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Tungsten E2's that won't turn off are often caused by an event that spans the end of year/beginning of year in the Calendar app.
Simple fix, but too late to help you since you've moved on...

  • Palm Tungsten E2 HELP!!!!!

I have had my Palm Tungsten E2 for years now and have always been able to sync it to my desktop, until recently.  I have Windows Vista and we recently installed a Vista service pack to help speed up our computer and I have since not been able to hotsync.  I downloaded Palm Desktop 6.2, but in the middle of configuring my hotsync preferences my computer gave me the blue screen of death and froze on me.  I tried 3 times to install and configure 6.2 and it did this every time.  When I tried to download Palm Desktop 4.1.4 I got an error message saying it can't be installed on my computer.  Before we installed the Vista service pack I had all my palm information backed up on my hard drive on an earlier version of Palm Desktop (maybe 4.0?), but when I tried to install one of these newer versions it deleted the older version and ALL of my data!  I am freaking out because I depend on my palm for everything and I HAVE to have a backup of my information!  Can anyone help? Please?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

Best backup advice is to download a freeware app called NVBackup. Unzip the files to your computer. If you don't already have a SD card for your E2, get one...regular SD (not SDHC) no larger than 2GB. Format it in the E2 using the Card Info app. Then manually copy the NVBackup.prc file you downloaded and unzipped, to the /palm/launcher folder on the card. If your computer doesn't have a SD card reader, you'll need to get one (maybe $10-15). With nvbackup.prc file copied to the card, pop the card into the E2, run NVBackup, and run a backup of your entire E2 to the card. No worries thereafter...set it to run a backup every night (and limit the number of "cycles" to 3 or 4. Post back if you have any questions about how to do any of this.

  • I lost my old palm tungsten (about 5-6 years old. All the information is backed up on my laptop. Is there a new Palm I can buy that will do a sync with my computer?

    Post relates to: Tungsten E

Sorry for your loss. But it's awesome that your stuff was backed up. Yay!
Yes, any handheld/smartphones that uses "Palm OS" (key term) should sync just like your old Tungsten. Palm no longer sells Palm OS handhelds/smartphones as new, but you can usually pick one up on eBay or Amazon as a used item.
In order from newest to oldest:
    Palm TX
    Palm Tungsten T5
    Palm Tungsten T3
Centro is Palm's last smartphone which does everything a Palm OS handheld does, and you don't have to have a wireless service attached to it so you can essentially use it as a handheld.
The Lifedrive is a pretty good workhorse - chunkier and older than the others but I always liked it. Nice big screen.
    For example:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0009JMT38/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000BI7NHY/ref=sr_1_12_olp?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1279132491&sr=1-1...
Keep in mind these products are no longer manufactured, so when your "new" used device needs to be upgraded/replaced, you'll need to start looking at webOS phones, Windows Mobile phones/handhelds, or Android products. None of these sync the same way as the old Palm OS devices. Some of your stuff might not port over.
webOS is the next generation of Palm, so I'm suggesting that option when the time comes.   Palm has an app that migrates Calendar, Contacts and Tasks from Palm Desktop to webOS, which is quite convenient. In fact, you could get a webOS phone now, and move your Palm Desktop stuff over to it today - no need to go through a new/used Palm OS intermediary device.
