Palm TX problem: Soft reset caused by starting some programs

Since I got my Palm TX I've had a strange problem. Programs that worked fine at first now cause the Palm to do a reset when I try to start them. first one program then another started doing this over a period of several months. At first I thought that there woas some kind of incompatability that for some reason only slowly became apparent. Now, when I tap the silkscreen icon for "Home" it causes a reset! Fortunately the home button does not do this.
Any Ideas before this happens to all my programs?
Thanks,
Jim

Hello and thank you for using the Palm Help Forums!
The use of incompatible 3rd party applications can cause looping and freezing to the Palm devices. If you can, remove the programs manually from your Palm and try to reinstall them to see if this resolves your issue. If you are unable to remove them manually, I would then perform a hard reset on the device. The hard reset will erase everything from the device so make sure you have everything backed up on pc via hotsync.
You may want to see if the program(s) you are running have newer versions to avoid further problems. If problems persist, you may need to locate which program is causing the reset and not use it on the device.
I hope this is helpful and let me know if you have any further questions.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Palm TX does a soft reset when I tap on memos

I am new to posting on this forum.  My Palm TX does a soft reset when I tap on memos or push the button I have set to memos.  I also have had several soft resets occur after tuning the my palm on from the On/Off button.  I have had Palms for the last 10 years.  Never had this problem.  The only problem I had was the On/Off button on The TX failed as a result this is my 3rd TX in the last 4 years.  Any suggestions welcome.  I was behind on syncing and my last sync was done about 1 week before this problem occurred.  I really do not want to do a hard reset.  This problem has been going on for a month.  Can I just do an unistall/reinstall without loosing any info?
    Post relates to: Palm TX

This question has been asked and answered many times here... Somehow, the memos database has become corrupt on the device. There are two ways to fix this:
    1. First, open Palm Desktop and go up to Tools/Options/Tools Tab and click the Check Records button. Let it look for corrupt records, and if none are found then a simple fix is to set your HotSync Manager setting for the Memos app to "Desktop overwrites Handheld" for one operation.
If using Palm Desktop 4.x, change the conduit here: Click on your HotSync Manager icon in the tool tray, and select "Custom". Make sure your HotSync Account name is showing in the top window, then highlight the Memos app and click the "Change" button. Click the selection for "Desktop Overwrites Handheld" and click "Done". (DO NOT select the "Set as Default" box!) Now do a HotSync. Since you didn't select "Set As Default" it will only do the overwrite for one operation, then default back to "Synchronize".
If using Palm Desktop 6.2.x, change the conduit here: Click on the HotSync Manager icon in the tool tray, and select "Settings". Make sure your HotSync Account name is showing in the top center window, then click the "Applications" link in the left column. Check the box for "Show Details", Highlight the application you wish to change, then click the "Configure" button. Click the bullet for "Desktop Overwrites Handheld" and DO NOT select the "Set as Default" box. Now do a HotSync. Since you didn't select "Set As Default" it will only do the overwrite for one operation, then default back to "Synchronize".
Check to see if the HotSync completes without errors, and your Memos application is back to normal.
    2. If the above does not fix the problem, then download and install "DBFixit" from Pimlico Software: http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/dbfixit.htm The program will search your device for errors, and fix some for free. Others may require the purchase of a registration code, with the funds going to an animal rescue non-profit (Gorilla Haven).

  • Palm TX: Bluetooth settings lost after soft reset

    Hi all,
all my bluetooth settings get lost, when I perform a soft reset. Does anyone have a hint which files are getting deleted or "updated" from the ROM so I can restore them from a backup? Or do you perhaps have a solution so that the settings won't get deleted?
Thank you very much in advance!
    Cheers!

I too have a problem with resets while using the Palm Bluetooth Keyboard 3245WW but i think my resets are only limited within Wordsmith when pressing the Delete/Del key. Try seeing if your problem is related to one particular key... though admitedly i use a T3 not a TX and i have read about others on the TX experiencing random resets. I am just wondering if it is tied to the Delete key like my problem.
My fix for my problem was to stuff some paper under the Delete key so i wont accedentally press it while typing.

Itunes will no longer work on my Windows 8 PC. When I attempt to start the program a message says: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.  I have tried to uninstall iTunes but the Windows uninstaller will not delete the program I get a message that says: A network error occurred while attempting to read file: C:\Windows|Installer|iTunes.msi.  How do I get iTunes to work again?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

My iPhone 4 stopped recognizing when it is plugged in to charge. It has to completely die and a soft reset has to be done to it before it will charge and start back up running. A tech at a store said it was just a short in the phone and nothing could be done to fix it, but I'm sure there has to be other options. Any suggestions?

To rule out a software issue or damaged data inside the backup, set it up as new device without using the latest backup afterwards.

  • Palm TX Performs a soft reset automatically when I click on an application!!

I have Epocrates software downloaded to my TX, and each time i try to access it from my applications menu it performs a soft reset. The entire palm turns off and restarts. This is a must have software for me because I'm in grad. school and need it for my clinical rotations for reference. What do i need to do? Do i need to return the TX, i've had it for 2 1/2 months and got it from Best Buy. It's got a warranty with Palm for one year right? I Just need this thing to work correctly, a response to help would be appreciated. Thanks. Patrick.

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
The behavior you describe sounds like either a corrupted (or missing?) database or other software conflict rather than a hardware issue.  You might need to get with Epocrates support.  I am unfamiliar with Epocrates, but I seem to recall that it comes with some large databases which can be stored on a SD card.  Maybe deleting and reinstalling everything will help.  Have you ever been able to get Epocrates to work?

  • Soft Reset starts, then goes black on time date screen

Unable to turn on my Tungsten E, so I did a soft reset.  The logo comes up and then, only for an instant, the time date screen.  Almost immediately it goes black again.  I've tried several times, and I get the same result.  What could be wrong and how can I correct?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E

Sounds like your battery could use some juice. Try plugging your palm into the wall charger for 3-5 hours. Then try turning it on again.
If it still does not turn on, try the soft reset while it is plugged into the wall charger.

If the basics (restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new) don't work, you'll need to bring the phone to Apple for evaluation

  • Soft-reset PXI-System

    Good morning,
I try to execute a "soft-reset" on a PXI-System, but I can't found any nodes to do this.
With "soft-reset" I mean a function like the ABORT and the RUN button in a VI. More precise, if you connect to the real-time target via "debug application" you get the normal frontpanel of the VI which is actual executed. With abort/run buttons now you can "restart" this VI, so you don't need a hard reboot of the whole PXI-System which take a long time to get a "clean" system state.
    Is this posible?!
    Thanks a lot
    Heiko

I'm wrestling with a similar problem, but I think I know how to fix it (just haven't had the time ...).
Background -- I "inherited" a LabVIEW RT program written using LabVIEW 7 (well before LabVIEW Project).  The PXI code was packaged into an LabVIEW Library (.llb) file and copied by FTP to a known location on the PXI's disk.  We used VI Server to locate the top-level VI on the PXI side and simply start it running.  At the end of the routine, we stopped the code on the PXI.  In this mode, the code was always present on the PXI, "ready to run", and we rarely had to reboot the PXI.  As a side benefit, we could have multiple PXI routines sitting on the PXI, each matched to a particular routine on the Host, with each Host routine starting (and stopping) its appropriate RT "partner".
I'm currently working on the much-revised, much-improved version of this program running on LabVIEW 2012 under LabVIEW Project.  My RT code is built as a Start-up Executable (.rtexe) and deployed to the RT Target as a Startup as part of the Build.  At the conclusion of the Host program, the RT program also exits, which (as you note) causes the PXI to reboot, meaning we cannot restart for a minute or so.  We also can't (easily) have multiple "pairs" of Host/RT routines that link themselves together at run-time (at least, not with a lot of extra work!).
I've been thinking about how to implement an "auto-restart" method for the RT code.  I don't think it would be too difficult, but have not yet tried to implement it.  My RT program consists of multiple parallel loops, with some initialization code at the beginning of the program (before the loops run) and some finalization code at the end.  The main idea is to get the program simplified to a single loop (in my case, a Queued State Machine/Message Handler) that internally starts and stops the other parallel loops (probably through a Start Asynchronous Call and a local Shared Variable "Stop Loops").  My current Exit State sets "Stop Loops" to True, breaks the connections with the Host, and exits the QSM, leading to the termination of the RT code.
One idea I'm planning to try is to add an additional State, "Restart", that is called by Exit instead of exiting the QSM.  This state would wait a few seconds (to let the other loops finish) and then perform (again) the initialization code that preceded the entrance to the QSM.  Note that this inevitably sets the initial QSM State, so on finishing the Restart State, the QSM's Initialization State should be next, "... and away we go!"
If you try this and it works, please post a followup here.  I'm anxious to try this, myself, but I've got other bugs to fix in this code before I can worry about "improving it" ...
