Palm TX won't go past touchscreen calibration

I recently (= 30 minutes ago) did a hard reset on my TX.  Now, it keeps asking me to "tap in the center of the target" in a seemingly infinite loop.  Is this a sign that the touchscreen has failed or is failing?

The digitizer may be going bad and may need repaired.
You can try this process to see if there is any debris that is stuck under the screen edge.
Take a business card or folded piece of paper. Stick it in the gap between the edge of the screen and the case. Move around the perimeter of the screen and see if you can get out any debris.
If that doesn't work, the digitizer on the device is probably defective and needs replaced.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Mac Mini won't boot past Apple logo and spinning wheel

    I have a Mac mini (late 2009) running 10.8.2. Today, I tried to log into the computer. It accepted my username and password, but then the screen turned gray instead of logging in. I left it like that for about twenty minutes, then gave up on waiting and Ctrl-Command-Power rebooted it. It then wouldn't reboot: it gets to the Apple logo and spinning loading wheel, but won't go past there.
    So I went into single-user mode and was able to access the HD fine. I ran a filesystems check using the recommended syntax (/sbin/fsck -fy, I think). It said that the volume looked okay, and that it had been modified. I took this as a good sign (that it had been repaired) and typed "reboot" to restart the machine. I held Command-Shift-V to perform a Verbose Safe Boot.
    The computer makes no further progress after the following four lines:
    vboxdrv: fAsync=0 offMin0x809 offMax=0x2bc3
    VBoxDrv: version 3.2.12 r68302; IOCtl version 0x140001; IDC version 0x10000; dev major=34
    VBoxFltDrv: version 3.2.12 r68302

    I'm assuming all the instances of "vbox" are in reference to Oracle's VirtualBox VM. I do have VirtualBox installed, but haven't used it in a while (months), so I don't see why it's suddenly causing a problem.
    To clarify, the computer doesn't "hang" after these lines: I can still type text into the terminal. The entire log is being saved to /dev/console, so I could probably grab it from Single-User Mode if necessary.
    Everything else seems to be working properly: even the wl0 drivers are loaded.
    Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this, or at least disable VirtualBox so the computer can start?

    When the Apple Logo appears your Mac has found a valid system disk, and Mac OS X begins loading.

    Once the spinning gear appears the BSD kernel (Darwin) has assumed command and begins loading device drivers.  Shortly thereafter it transfers command to the almighty (and controversial) launchd process.  Such are the workings of UNIX.
    What this means for us mortals is that when a Mac stalls at the Apple logo or the logo with a spinning gear, it probably has a corrupt Mac OS X installation.  It may also be having trouble accessing an internal or external hardware component, but this is less-likely.
    Rebooting your Mac in Safe Mode can sometimes get things working well-enough that a second, normal reboot then works normally  Hold down the Shift key at startup to boot in Safe Mode.  DiskWarrior is also worth a shot (this is by far my most used disk utility).  If that doesn’t work, an Archive & Install may be needed.

    I don't think I can access my disk anymore as I've moved across countries since I've first gotten my laptop.  it was working perfectly fine before  it kept going to the dark grey screen with a little blue on the bottom.
    If it helps, my camera light is still on, and it seems that my computer is working properly itself, but won't go past this grey screen.
    I'm a college student and am really panicking about this - can anyone please tell me what to do?

    What operating system are you running on it? (iOS 5.1 is for iPhone, iPad...not a Mac).

  • HP8540w (540M) ram upgrade, won't boot past bios

    I have recently acquired new RAM. First it was 2 x 8 gb but I found out later this is not supported by my specific model.
    But now I switched it with 2 x 4gb PC12800 CL11, from a newer hp model and it still won't boot past the BIOS, which has been upgraded to the latest version. 
    The Bios recognizes the RAM perfectly but still it won't boot into windows. When I see the windows 8.1 logo it gives a sudden shutdown which is followed by a restart. In theory the pc12800 should work, albeit clocked down to 10600 to match the motherboard & processor.
    It feels inadequate to have a 3 year old laptop which is not able to go past the 4gb, especially because I bought it since it was the elitebook version and military graded. I wanted to have something future proof, not a machine that needs to be replaced after 3 years. It feels like just threw 150 dollars out of the window.
    So I'm hoping that there's another solution that I might have overlooked.

    Well the recommended memory is PC3-10600 aka DDR3-1333. On some models it actually downclocks to DDR3-1066 speed. I think the memory you have installed from a newer model is just not compatible. If it is DDR3-1600 it might even be low voltage memory which is almost certain not to work. 

  • PowerBook G4 won't boot past blue screen

    I've read a couple of posts with similar problems. The jist is, I did a security update/restart earlier and now my laptop won't boot past the blue screen after the white screen with the gray apple. I think I'm on Mac OS 10.4.11 but I had it on auto-update so that could be incorrect.
    I've booted from the install disk and run a diagnostic from the First Aid bit in the Disk Utility. It says that there are no errors found and the S.M.A.R.T. status says "verified" as well. It won't let me boot into Safe Mode (although, I could be doing that wrong as I'm not exactly clear on how to do it - pressing S doesn't seem to do anything, but if I press Command + S it takes me to a text listy thing and I've run the "fsck -f" system check (which seems like the same as the disk utility check?) from there and also gotten the "volume is ok" message. There was also a suggestion to run some kind of diagnostic after booting with the D key from the install disk, but I was never able to get the disk to boot from the D key, only the C key.
    I'm sure that this is kind of the "same song, different verse," kind of post, but I've not read about volumes registering as okay. I'm a little wary of a archive-and-reinstall as I've not ever done that before (so, if that's the suggestion you have, I would really appreciate loads of specifics on how that works so I don't mess up!)
    I've read in several instances suspicion of a hard drive problem but I've not had any slow downs or any crashing. I did travel to the UK for about 10 days, but I didn't even change the time zone on my laptop while there, so I don't think that's it (but I suppose it could be.)
    Lastly, I did recently replace my keyboard. A few keys had become non-responsive so I replaced it and have had the new keyboard for a bit over a month.
    Suggestions? Ideas? Sorry if it's a repeat post -- just felt like the circumstance was a teensy bit different. And also, thanks very much for any info you can give.

    If you can boot your computer into Firewire Target Disk Mode and you have access to a second Mac that supports firewire, you may be able to back up items that have not been backed up previously.
    If you are able to back everything up successfully, and you have tested your backup to be sure it is sound, then we can proceed with re-installation of the OS. The best option is to completely reformat and erase the HDD and then install the OS from disk. (I will post complete step by step directions). This will enable you to start with a clean slate/HDD. Your other option would be to use the Archive and Install option. Think it over and let me know how you want to proceed.

    1- My PowerMac G4 (running OS 10.4.11) won't boot past the grey screen with the apple.  Any suggestions?

    I found somewhere else how to hold down the mouse on starting, which opened the tray.  I was able to startup with the disk, holding down the C and get to the Disk Utility window.  Tried repairing the disk, but got this message:
    Fist Aid failed:
    Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
    The underlying task reported failure on exit. <OK>
    and in the info window it says,
    "Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Catalog file entry not found for extent
    The volume needs to be repaired.
    Volume check failed.
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

    0 HFS volumes verified
    1 volume failed verification
    Sounds pretty ominous!  Of course, the recommendation is that I backup everything , but how can I if I can't get to the desktop to back it up?  (It hasn't had a lot of use for sometime, but is available as a film scanning station, and so that I can access scanned images on my iMac.  I doubt that there is a whole lot on the drive that isn't backed up, but I would prefer to back it up for sure!)

  • HP Envy 17 suddenly goes into hibernation, won't charge past a certain point

    Starting last week my laptop has been experience some battery issues.
    I noticed first that when it got to around 25 or 30% battery, it would suddenly go into sleep mode (at least, that's what I think it's doing. When I plug it in and turn it back on, the HP loading screen appears, but everything else returns to exactly how it was). Once back on, the battery has been reduced to 1%.
    Also, it won't charge past certain percentages, which are gretting progressively lower. At first it was 98%, then 93%, and at the moment 35%.  It will say that it is charging, however.
    When I use HP Support Assistant, my battery displays as "Okay". My friend used a program that drained my battery as fast as it could (I apologize that I can't remember what that type of program is called) and I think he said that it did it in about 25 minutes or so, which is expected of a laptop of this age (about a year and a half old).

    Thank you for posting back and that was great information by the way.  From what you have shown me the battery you have did pass however it is on its way out. It has one dead cell and the other cells are working harder to provide enough punch to keep things happy. 
    You will not get a full charge on this battery at this point and it may bother your systems hibernation.
    I would look at seeing what is available for replacement or run your system without the battery and just on power until you get a new one.

    With a corrupt disk, the install procedure is most likely going to fail.
    How old it the disk?
    You might be able to reformat it to fix the problem. Of course that means you lose all of your data.
    The other alternative is to get a new disk drive and put that in your Mac and install OS X
    Then put the old disk drive in an enclosure and see what can be recovered from it.

    If reinstall is the only way to go, is there a way to access this hard drive to back up files (it is a recent computer, still hadn't made any backups...)

    Shut down and startup holding command-r keys into Recovery Disk from there choose Disk Utility and Repair Disk.

    Ooops you've been there, done that. You can use Target Disk Mode if you have another Mac.
    EDIT: Was the Java Runtime from Software Update?

    I just updated my original iPad 32 GB WiFi to iOS 5.1 about fifteen minutes ago.  But I did it with the system restore feature in iTunes.  So it wiped out everything on my iPad.  But it did work.  Then I restored an earlier backup and all went fine.  Maybe you could try backing up your iPad and then using Restore to get it back to factory settings to see what happens.

    Will I have to back up my files?
    Not usually. You should be able to re-install OS 9 (Classic) on that model via a Clean Install with no loss of any files.
    That machine originally came with a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. You can use the original OS 9 Install CD that came with it to install that version, and update via download updaters to v. 9.1 or later in order to use it as Classic (the OS 9 install must be at least v. 9.1 in order for it to be used as Classic by OSX; OS 9.2.x provides better compatibilty in that mode). Or, you can use a retail OS 9.1 or retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.
    In either case, a Clean Install would be the method to use. A Clean Install of OS 9 removes nothing, and gives you a new, uncomprimised System Folder.

    There is a situation where the OS 9 install can be good, but the machine is still not able to boot to it. This can happen when the hard drive was last initialized using OSX's Disk Utility, and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected. IN the absence of those drivers the volume can not be mounted by OS 9, including an OS 9 on the volume - hence it can't boot to it.
    An easy way to tell - while in OSX, do a Get Info on the drive; I believe one of the pieces of info given about the drive is whether it has OS 9 drivers installed.
    Or, boot the machine to an appropriate version OS 9 Install CD - if the drive has OS 9 drivers, the volume will appear on the desktop; if it does not, it won't.

    If you do have to re-initialize the drive in order to get OS 9 drivers on it, then you will need to back up all your files - initializing a drive will erase everything on it.

    There are two major problems out there right now. That is also part of the problem. We are not used to two problems in our domain.
    I own 20 Mac's in my office, and I only did the latest updates on my MacBook Pro 17-inch portable and my G5 Dual 2.3 GHz desktop that has two 30-inch Cinema Displays. Both machines had the Adobe CS 2 Professional Suite with Acrobat Professional.
    I had both of the prevailing update problems on my MacBook Pro—1) unable to restart and 2) Acrobat crashing the system.
    On the G5, I only had the 1) unable to restart problem.
    I won't update the other machines until these problems are resolved by the OEMs.
    1) Unable to Restart. Of the two major hiccups out there, the link below indicates Quicktime's update is the source of the 1) unable to restart problem, fixed by deleting startup items, I believe. Again, I had this 1) unable to restart problem on both operating systems (PPC and Intel versions). Recovery of the 1) unable to restart problem is done in in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when restarting. This may take a long time to reboot, so keep holding down the shift key until the grey screen and startup wheel is seen. Then delete all startup items and Adobe Version Cue if you have it. (Use Version Cue Uninstaller.)

    2) Acrobat Crashing the System. Acrobat's freezing the entire OS 10.4.6 system is a result of the Security Update 2006-003, fixed by rolling back to a pre-Security Update state using Archive & Install for re-installation of the OS. Archive & Install does not erase your files or network settings. Printers may need to be re-added.
    Apple has released two products (QT 7.1 and SU 2006-003) that fouled these systems. Bad Quality Assurance, I think. I am not sure if the Security Update problem is an Apple or an Adobe software problem, i.e., Adobe may have not followed some software guidance from Apple in Acrobat 7.07 or earlier versions. I am certain both companies are aware of the problem, but I am uncertain of the fix for Acrobat. We probably do need to update for security, but I can't live without Acrobat. So I will wait it out sans Security Update 2006-003.

    Before it stopped loading I had less than 5GB of memory spare if that helps.

    A common thumb rule says, that you should have at least 10% of the total disk capacity as free space for swapping files and system usage. As this is a number for smaller drives, on actual big drives the percentage can be smaller, but depending on your actual RAM size the system may use the disk for swapping and need a few GB space.
    Warning: audit space low (< 5% free)on audit log file-system
    In your case, it's a low-level system error connected to some log operation. It may be that an existing log file is too large or has become corrupted such that the OS cannot add to the log.
    First Aid
    Try to boot in single mode and clean the logs or shoot off the Audit mode with CLI command "sudo audit -t" (without the braces)
    If that does not solve the problem start (if possible) the system as a target from a nother Mac (target mode) and perform a logfile cleanup with a apropriate tool; e.g. TinkerTool.
