Palm, WebOS, and Verizon...a love/hate story

Dear Palm,
I love my Pre+! I cannot express how impressed I am with the ease of use, intuitiveness, and plain ol' "just works right" of my Pre+.
I hate that I need Verizon (I get a discount and they are pretty much the only provider that covers my home and work).
Verizon is treating the Pre+ and Pixi+ as...well, they aren't treating them as anything. It's almost as if they don't think Palm products are worth their time. They ignore any posts on their customer service boards, other than to post something like, "thanks for posting that issue, we will look into it." and then never revisit the post with a follow-up. I realize that Droid is a larger part of their revenue stream, but that doesn't justify ignoring other product lines.
As examples, Sprint was able to provide their customers with the WebOS 1.4.5 update, but Verizon won't even provide an update to their customers as to the status of the update. Is it in processing? Is there a bug issue holding it up? Is there a conflict with a Verizon application that needs to be resolved? These questions have been asked on their forums (and some of those threads have just been deleted) but the only response from Verizon reps is "we don't have any information on that at this time". I have reviewed their forums and when the same types of questions are asked on the Droid forums, there is at least 1 Verizon rep replying within these threads once every day or every other day for as long as the discussion continues. The same types of threads on the Palm board are answered (read no real answer, just a post with no real information) within a day or two and then the thread is ignored. They don't revisit a Palm thread once they have made an initial post. The Moderators on the boards spend more time "editing" post that are critical of Verizon (deleting sections) and posting "Keep the discussion civil" in its place so that anyone else reading the thread will never see the part of the post that actually criticized Verizon.
I am asking Palm to use every tool they have at their disposal to apply pressure to Verizon to stop treating Palm devices as second class citizens. They need to be reminded that they have an obligation to Palm and their customers to support the devices with the same level of effort that they provide to any other product line.
Post relates to: Pre Plus p101vzw (Verizon)

I am also anxious for Verizion to release 1.4.5. Recent posts from Verizon reps says the update will be available in a "couple of weeks". It is important to keep in mind however that Verizon is under no obligation to provide this update, nor are they obligated to provide it within a certian timeframe. AT&T customers are also waiting for this update.
As far as Verizon not giving the Pre and Pixi the attention it deserves, this is true. In their defense, the Droids are the hot selling product for Verizon so they get all of the love. If the Pre suddenly started flying off the shelf, Verizon would give it more attention.

  • After Effects and Quicktime - a love hate relationship

Since Apple released QT 7.4 in January and every forum was bogged with users posting their AE error messages, I've been very weary of Quicktime vsoftware.
I'm a apple user at home and avoided updating to Quicktime 7.4, but recently realized that at work my computer was running Quicktime 7.4 with AE CS3. I occasionally get the error (-54) but not on a regular basis it seems to be completely arbitrary.
I've been searching the forums trying to discover what (if any) is the best QT version to be running for a studio that works mainly in After Effects?

I'm not hearing anything that comes close to "bogging" down any forums about Quicktime but I understand your decision to be wary of Apple's inability to get it right the first time.

  • DSL and wireless ~ love/hate relationship

Well, I'm back.  Starting a new post but adding the old so those interested in this little soap opera love/hate relationship between my DSL and wireless WRT54G router can follow along without commercials.....
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/DSL-and-Wireless-something-isn-t-right/m-p/331539...
It's becoming a tiring game, trying to second guess my router....what will restore the connection today?  Everything is working wireless BUT the connection needs to repaired continually:
The Wii won't connect so we boot up either the laptop or the desktop computer, then all of a sudden the Wii connects.
The desktop takes forever (around 10 minutes) to connect but once it does, it either works fast or each page load will take forever....never know till you're in there working.
Sometimes turning the wireless router and DSL off will reset it and it will work fine.
Sometimes running a network diagnostic resets the system.
Sometimes doing a repair on the network will do it.
We did learn that plugging in the ethernet chord makes for instant access, so we know its not the DSL or the ISP itself.
any suggestions?  Is it time to break up with my old wireless router and find a hot new young thing?  Or is there something else going on that I haven't worked out yet?
Thanks for your help in advance as always!!

Have you tried upgrading the router's firmware...?
You can try by upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware. After upgrading/reflashing the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from scratch.

  • Question on Palm 500 and BlackBerry Storm--please help!

Hi, I'm not sure where to post this, but here is my story.
For several years, I've had a Palm 500.
I believe, when I purchasedit,I had to choose to Hot Sync between either my PC at home or my Mac at work. I chose to Hot Sync at home and that was an error because I was mostly using it for work. In time, I got tired of tapping everything in with the stylus and mostly use it as an address book now, even though I have $hundreds in third-party apps going unused.
Recently, I’ve been considering buying a BlackBerry Storm. I don’t really plan to use it on the Net but Verizon says I have to pay $30 a month just for web fees or I can’t get that phone. My husband says there is a way nowadays to HotSync to both a PC and a Mac. Or at least for me to hook up the Palm 500 to the Mac at work and be able to use iCal etc. there.
If I choose to buy the BlackBerry he says I can transfer all my Palm data to the BB.
Can anyone tell me: 1. Is any of this true? 2. If I stay with the Palm how do I get the necessary hardware/software for my iMac? 3. Should I just deep-six the Palm 500 because it’s so old?
I really need some kind of organization software/device because deadlines are piling up and I’m gonna get in trouble on my job!
    Thanks!!!

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
You always had the ability to sync with two different desktops, even of different platforms.  This Palm Knowledgebase Article discusses how to Hotsync one device on two different desktops:
    http://tinyurl.com/kq4c5
The Mac hotsync software is downloadable from the support/download site linked above if you don't have your original installation disc.  Just be sure you pay heed to the article's instructions about only using ONE desktop for full 2-way sync, using the second desktop for one-way sync (Handheld Overwrites Desktop) as a clone of the other.
As for the BB Storm, I am unfamiliar with it but it looks like you would probably have to sync with M$ Outlook or some other organizer app which is compatible with the Blackberry Desktop software (suggest you peruse the BB site for info).  If you don't already sync with Outlook, you would have to migrate your data from Palm Desktop to Outlook.  You can do that but you might need your original installation disc.  I'm not sure whether the m500 came with Outlook conduits or Chapura Pocket Mirror to sync with Outlook...and I'm just a little bit frustrated right now trying to find stuff on the newly redesigned web site to be able to point you to the right answer on that.
Whether to deep-six the m500 or not is a tough one.  Palm's handheld PDA business is pretty much a goner...no new stand-alone PDAs are planned, and the "current" models (TX, E2 and Z22) now seem to be at the end of their production life.  So it seems that whatever is still out there in the supply stream (like www.amazon.com where you can get a new TX for something like $270) is probably about it. Your m500 is already a dinosaur, and parts will get harder to come by.  But if you like the stand-alone PDA it seems that now would be the time to get a replacement for your m500.  Their speed, display resolution and other capabilities are far superior to your m500.

  • Connecting my PDA Palm TX to Verizon wireless internet

I have a PDa Palm TX and recently switched internet service from Comcast to Verizon.  I can't connect to my Verizon wireless internet service.  I do not know which secuirty key setup I need.  Can someone please give me instructions on connecting to Verizon internet.  I have a wireless router and it works fine with my two laptop computers.  Thanks!

Connecting to the internet with your TX should have nothing to do with switching from Comcast to Verizon, but rather the type of security you (or someone else) set on your wireless router.  Also, some types of routers won't work with the TX.  Check the "stickied" thread near the top of this board for tips and "how-to's" about wireless networking issues.
If you don't know how to get into your router settings to check them there, you should be able to see the security settings on your laptop by checking the Network settings.

  • WebOS and Audible aa format

When will the encryption support for the Audible.com aa format be available?  I have heard from Audible and they say they need "hardware" support from the phone vendor.  Since the Pre can look like an iPod to iTunes, having the decrypt support for the format should be all that is needed.  I can't believe this is terribly difficut for the WebOS folks at Palm.  I know there are people waiting for this support before getting a Pre.  I used Audible for many years on my Treo-650 and love it.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I am concerned about this too. I am a long-time subscriber to Audible. I have used the service on my Palm Zire72 and currently on my Palm Centro. I am hoping to upgrade to the Pre soon, and I wanted to know if there are plans to have a native WebOS app for the Pre? It sounds like this will require Palm and Audible to get together on the encryption. Does the current AudibleAir app run under the MotionApps Classic app? If not, is this also because of the encryption?
This isn't a dealbreaker for me, but I will be very disappointed if the Pre cannot play Audible audiobooks. I'm sure this will come about soon, as Audible is a major player. Here's hoping there's a solution.

The HP Touchpad will be running webOS 3.0, not PalmOS, thus your programs will not run.
There was a PalmOS emulator known as Motion Apps "Classic", but the company has ended the program and turned over the code to HP.  Whether they will use it has not been announced yet.

  • Love / Hate Relationship with Photoshop Elements

I am having a love/hate relationship with Photoshop Elements!  Love the page design capabilities and hate the lack of capability on the print end.  Kodak does not give any choice in the book they will print from Elements.  All I can get is a #$%& die cut cover!  Is there anyway that I can order other options that I know Kodak has available when creating a book using Elements and their site.  I want to be able to choose a custom cover!  I have tried Kodak to get answers.  I have tried Adobe (impossible, unless maybe you pay).  Neither are very helpful!  The only answers I get are use the Elements designed pages and place them onto pages that you create in their software.  Problem is that one needs a jpeg file to do this.  No online program seems to recognize .PSD or .PSE file types.   HELP!
Bob, Barbara you both seem to be very knowledgable...any ideas...
Anyone with any help can answer here or [email protected]
    Terry

    Terry:
Yeah, the photobook print options are limited. (Although, the built in Kodak and Shutterfly books are very nice)
One thing to try differently is to use the Print At Home selection on that first screen after the clicking on the PhotoBook option (assuming you are using PSE8 here) (use Photo Collage with PSE7)
Down that path, you will get a few more choices in page size. It will still create a multi-page document (a .pse) while your building your book, and when done, you can print the pages of the book out as a .pdf. Many book printing services will take in a PDF.
Another option is to do a single page at a time and save them as .jpg's. A little more work in keeping your various files together and ordered properly, but it would give you ultimate flexibility.

  • Love/hate my time capsule

Can I just tell you all that I have a love/hate relationship with Time Capsule?
I love that it automatically makes backups that I can go back in time to retrieve.
I hate how it grabs so much procecessing power when it is doing it's thing. I use Photoshop, After Effects and Cinema 4D often and time capsule seems to know when I am using those programs and decides THAT is the best time to begin backups. At that point the machine slows to a crawl. Arghhhhh!
    End of mini-rant....

Just to be clear.. your love hate is with Time Machine..
That is the software that decided ... ahhh now he is in the middle of important work.. lets do a backup right now and kill it.
Time Capsule is a dumb as a board router with a hard disk in it.
Methinks you need.. a better computer.. C2D won't cut it if you are running mulitple applications.

  • IPhone 5 and Verizon customer Service Nightmare Please help!

I need help with Verizon customer service. I would like to know if I am being unreasonable. Here is my story. I ordered an iPhone 5 from apple to add to my Verizon account. This will be my fourth line of service with Verizon. I spend over 200 dollars a month with Verizon. I ordered the iPhone on the first day it was available to order. I received my iPhone on Tuesday 9/25/12. The nightmare begins. I call Verizon customer service to activate service. I get bounced from department to department because they are unable to activate my phone. This goes on for about an hour. I then get to a nice young lady that was very friendly and worked hard to try to help me. We spend for hours on the phone speaking to all of her different departments and even calling apple care and apple directly. The problem is Verizon set my new line of service to start in the middle of October. After about 4-5 hours on hold with customer service I am told they can't activate my new phone until the middle of October because when the order was placed they set up my activation date wrong. They went on to tell me they could do nothing more and transferred me to apple as they said only apple can fix the problem. I spend the next two hours on the phone with apple. Apple class all their tech support and calls Verizon back and explains my phone is a working phone and Verizon is the one providing the service so this is definitely a Verizon issue. I am advised by apple that I need to call Verizon back to fix. At this point Verizon is closed as I have been on hold with reps past closing time. I call back to Verizon and get a really helpful customer service rep the next day. Spend two hours on hold with him and he gets my service turned on. He states they should have been able to help me with this yesterday and apologized to me. He advised I would have to call back the next day to change my phone numbers around. Total time invested today 2 hours. Total time invested so far over 8 hours. I call back the next day to get my numbers moved around. Takes about an hour. When we are done I ask if I can get a credit on my next bill for having to spend over 8 hours on the phone to fix Verizon's mistake. I am transferred to a very condescending manager who laughs at me and tells me in essence they don't care about my time. He offers me one day of service credit. I advise him this is unacceptable. He gives me an analogy that this is like me getting my electric turned off for not paying and then wanting a credit for the time it took to turn back on. He even laughed at me on the phone and told me he wasn't going to do anything. When I asked to speak to a higher up manager I was told no. My question is who do I advise to get this rectified, and is it unreasonable to expect a credit when I spent over 8 hours on the phone with Verizon to correct their mistake?  Pleas help!

Yes, don't feel it is as black&white as other posters here, but it is impractical.
What is the value of your time for example?  If you are not self-employed, were you still being paid during these 8 hours.  A court would consider actual economic loss, did you lose money during these 8 hours?   And do you/your employer pay customers in similar situations?  In my experience, you get credit based on the service (e.g. the 1 day credit) rather than being paid for your time.
And on the flip side, if I call up Verizon complaining that my phone doesn't work, and it turns out that I had forgot to charge it, do you want to be billed for the rep's time when it was your mistake?  (Of course, wireline DOES do this, if Verizon dispatches a repair tech and the fault is inside your house etc (without a wiring contract) you do get charged)
Certainly the one day credit is the minimum they should provide.  As others have said, your real recourse is to return the phone.

I have tried to insert a jpeg and a pdf signature. Im aware and have used the digital signatures as well. I am bothered that their are no links to research JPEG signature etc. When I did come across a help file pertaining to inserting a clip art, there was no information from Adobe, only a comment to the sender that this might be helpful. this has turned into a love hate search. ADOBE is one of the hardest programs to find information when one is using terms common in other programs such as MSWord etc. Adobe you have got to get your act together you are not user friendly.

  • Windows live mail 2102 and Verizon yahoo email

    Hello
I have been using Windows live mail and Verizon yahoo together for over a year
I use Windows mail since I do like the Verizon webmail feel and format
These two program have worked fine for me until yesterday
Today we try to access yahoo mail using  Windows  live I get a series of errors .
    These errors include
    1) timeout
    2) wrong password
Last night at the recommendation of VZ tech support I deleted my Live account and created a new one for the same yahoo mail address.   This worked last night as all me server email were downloaded for Windows live.
However this morning when I access Windows love I get the same errors ay yesterday and no new emails since last night
I have deleted my anti virus program to see if this solved the problem , however this had no impact
Per VZ tech support I am using the correct port setting, I have tried alternative port setting  with no luck
I would appreciate any help in fixing this issue

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have had the same experience.  The answer is to disconnect your verizon email from yahoo email and then to setup your email settings as described in a recent announcement from Verizon that was sent to users that do NOT use the Verizon Yahoo servers.
Anthony_VZ provides instructions in the Verizon Community Forum - Verizon.net topic.   I was so disgusted by the time I wasted trying to get support to answer the simple question of what settings I should be using that I was ready to dump Verizon completely.  I was eventually sent to Verizon Premium Support that would answer the question for $14.99 per month with a commitment of 10 months.  I have no idea if the Verizon Yahoo ports are even compatible with Windows Live Mail any more or not (nomal support is not "trained in Windows Live Mail").  How they can make something as straightforward as providing email client settings for a common client so difficult is beyond me.
As you can tell, I am very angry about the time I wasted on this.  Disconnect your Verizon email account from Yahoo and life will be better.  Good Luck.

Please see my reply to your other post.  You have repair options and the newer screens that are available with glass digitizers are better than the originals.
There is nothing else on the market that uses the Palm Operating System, so anything new would require you to migrate your data (contacts, calendar) to a different platform, i.e. iOS (iPod Touch) or Android (tablets).  That said, there is a third-party app called StyleTap for Android and other platforms, which emulates Palm OS for running Palm apps.  I have not yet figured out a way to get the datebook and contacts migrated over to it, but if you have Palm OS apps that you depend on, StyleTap is the way to go.  Beware, it's $50.
