PalmOS: IndexOutOfBoundsException in DataInputStream.read

Hi,
I'm getting IndexOutOfBoundsException when calling DataInputStream's readInt() in my midlet. The code works fine under J2MEwtk emulators, but with POSE (and on my Hansdpring too) I'll get the exception.
Method below tries to download a recordstore via HTTP.
The format of the file on webserver is simple:
<int><data><int><data>...
Where the int parameters specify size of data followed. The exception comes always at same place,
i.e. after some records are read.
Second mysterious thing is, why the exception object is null? So I can't call printStackTrace, while handling the exception...
Here is the code:
private void loadDatabase(String url, String storeName) {
        java.io.DataInputStream inStream = null;
        javax.microedition.rms.RecordStore store = null;
        byte[] buffer = new byte[512];
        try {
            int index = 0;
            int count = 0;
            inStream = Connector.openDataInputStream(url);
            store = RecordStore.openRecordStore(storeName, true);
            while (true) {
                index++;
                try {
                    count = inStream.readInt();
                } catch (java.io.EOFException eofEx) {
                    /* This is normal situation
                     * Let's break the loop
                    break;
                } catch (IndexOutOfBoundsException iobEx) {
                    // Here comes the strange exception. BTW, iobEx == null !?
                    throw iobEx;
                if (count > buffer.length) {
                    buffer = null;
                    Runtime.getRuntime().gc();
                    buffer = new byte[count];
                inStream.readFully(buffer, 0, count);
                store.addRecord(buffer, 0, count);
        } catch (IOException e1) {
            e1.printStackTrace();
        } catch (RecordStoreException e2) {
            e2.printStackTrace();
        } finally {
            try {
                if (inStream != null)
                    inStream.close();
                inStream = null;
            } catch (IOException e3) {}
            try {
                if (store != null)
                    store.closeRecordStore();
                store = null;
            } catch (RecordStoreException e4) {}
    }regards,
- indrek

indrek,
I'm seeing the same exception raised in a similar context on a call to readFully Specifically, my application, like yours, loads a record store from a data file via http. My file format, too, is similar: <short> <short> <data bytes> <short> <short> <data bytes> ... In my read loop I make one call to readFully to read the two shorts into a 4-byte buffer, followed by another call to read the (360) data bytes into a large byte buffer. I always get the exception on the first readFully call in the 4th pass through the loop (interestingly, this is after reading just over 1024 bytes). I get the following stack trace:

  • Need info about DataInputStream - read (byte[] ) method

    Hi all,
    I would like to know when does
    datainputStream.read(byte[] buffer) method return?
    Here dataInputStream is an object of type DataInputStream.
    Does the method return only after buffer.length bytes are read from the input stream? or Will it return after some bytes are read , even if the number of bytes read is less than buffer.length?
    I need this info because while developing a J2ME application and running it in an emulator , the above method seems to return even if some bytes are read.But when the application is transferred to a Mobile device, the method does not seem to return if some bytes are read, and seems to wait until buffer.length is reached.

    one more?

  • DataInputStream.read()

    Hi
    Im using the DatainputStream class to read segments of a specified file.
    Im trying to acheive this by passing in the following parameters to the read method,
    myDataInputStream.read(myByteArray[], 512, 512)
    Where my file in the datainputstream has a length of 31,000 (there abouts).
    The byte[] has a length of 512.
    My problem lies in the fact that the API states
    "If off is negative, or len is negative, or off+len is greater than the length of the array b, then an IndexOutOfBoundsException is thrown. "
    I want to take 512 bytes of the file starting at the position of 512 (offset). However because offset (512) + length (512) > 512 (byte[] length) then I get a indexoutofboundexception. This seems odd because it contradicts the whole purpose of providing an offset.
    I must be missing something here. Any help would be appreiciated with this matter.
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

    The offset refers to the byte[]. If you want to read starting at byte index 512, do a skip(512) before.

  • TCP/IP DataInputStream reads not all data send in one time?

    I have a C program that sends 4104 bytes of data to a java client.
    In my java client I have a buffer of 4104 bytes that reads the data using a DataInputStream. Now my problem is that the read function returns with only 1460 bytes instead of 4104 bytes.
    I only have this problem on a new type of PC we are using.
    Now I was wondering when you have a TCP/IP session doesn't every send results in 1 recv (read)?
    Does this differ for various platforms? (is that buffer size adjustable)
    Thanks!

    Alright then I do have a problem.
    If your application level doesn't define a blockthen
    you have problems.So I have to keep reading on the socket untill I get a
    timeout? I saw that DataInputStream has a function
    available(), this should return the available number
    of bytes that can be read without blocking. This
    hardly seems to work?
    I just want to read 1 TCP packet without knowing the
    size or the protocol of the packet without having to
    wait for some timeout. I don't want to reassemble -
    defragmentate all my packets. This question seems very
    reasonable to me, but perhaps I'm missing something?
    There's no guarantee in TCP that a block size N
    written in one application will be delivered as a
    single block to the receiver.Is there a place I can read that specification?Usually people need to understand an API in order to be able to use it. TCP sockets present a continuous stream paradigm: the data stream starts when the connection is established and ends when the connection is closed. Now reread your own question: you want to read a block of data from such a stream without knowing the size of the block. That just makes no sense. It is like trying to read first X bytes from a file stream without actually knowing what X is. The number of bytes available immediately on a socket read is subject to all kinds of random factors on the network and has nothing to do with the amount of data the server is actually trying to send as a "block". That is, a single write() on the server does not necessarily correspond to a single read() on the client.
    A common solution to this problem is to have an implicit block size (that is, it is fixed and known apriory) or prefix your payload with the block size. An example of the latter would be to send the block size as the block header (say, an int in network byte order) so that the receiving end could read the size first and then perform a loop that continuously reads from the socket until it reads exactly the required amount.
    In other words, TCP sockets just provide you with a continuous stream paradigm. You need to impose some kind of an application protocol on top of it to build client-server dialogs. This is what's done behind the scenes by CORBA, RMI, HTTP etc.
    If you need to read up on Berkely socket API specifically, Richard Stevens has written some excellent books.

  • IndexOutOfBoundsException  from FIS.read() method

    I am trying to read 8 bytes from a FIS
    According to the API for this method I should be able to read bytes 3 - 11 by using an offset of 3 and a length of 8 which is what
    fin.read(l_data_array, i_offset, i_length); is supposed to do but if my offset is >0 then it fails.
    Any ideas what is wrong?
    ( My file is approx 3KB so this is not the prob and the first method call does read 8 bytes )

        byte [] x = readBytesFromFile(3, 8); //IndexOutOfBoundsException  thrown

    Thanks for the replies folks.
    The file I will be reading in will, for the first part of the development phase, serve as a a Database. So it is liable to become > 1MB.
    Each record will be 1KB long, stored sequentially. So you are saying that if I want to read record No 999 I have to have a byte [] which can hold 999 * 1000 bytes. Seems a waste of resources ( Even though temporary ) that I can't move a pointer along the FIS and read say, bytes 9,000 to 10,000 into an array like ( byte[1000] ) instead of needing an array like ( byte [10,000] )
    What kind of kinky reason do sun have for this?

    Returns an estimate of the number of bytes that can be read (or skipped over) from this input stream without blocking by the next caller of a method for this input stream. The next caller might be the same thread or another thread. A single read or skip of this many bytes will not block, but may read or skip fewer bytes.
    This method returns the result of in.available(). where in is an InputStream. The API for InputStream says :

  • Reading n Wrinting files encoding in ANSI or unicode

    I have tried to using DataInputStream to read file the source is below:
    DataInputStream reader = new DataInputStream (
    new FileInputStream (path));
    String line = "";
    char ch = "";
    while ((int)ch != -1)
    ch = reader.readChar ();
    System.out.println ("Char: "+ch);
    //Close the BufferReader object
    reader.close();
    }catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
    System.err.println("READING1: "+e);
    catch (IOException e) {
    System.err.println("READING2: "+e+"\tpath: "+path);
    I need the thing read from the file to be in exactly like the one from the file, which encoding is unicode or ANSI.
    Also, I need to write into a file but I am not able to write a with an new line. Below is my source:
    public void writeFile (String path, String in) {
    try {
    DataOutputStream writer = new DataOutputStream (
         new FileOutputStream (
    path, true));
    //SP4.2.1.4.5.2.1 Write to file
    //Write input into the file
    writer.writeChars (in);
    //Write new line
    writer.writeChar ((char)0x0d);
    writer.writeChar ((char)0x0a);
    writer.flush ();
    writer.close();
    } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {System.err.printl(e);}
    catch (IOException e) {System.err.println(e);}
    }

    Hi,
    you want to read and decode data from a file - why do you use readChar then? - readChar does exactly what it says - it reads a character without decoding it. To read modified UTF-8 you can use readUTF() - this method will decode the modified UTF-8 used by Java to write out Unicode.
    There are examples in the documentation and the tutorial, I guess - give yourself a break and read this first. Certainly you can study the way the text is encoded too and write your own class(es), that can read and write this - it's a good way to learn how this kind of stuff works - not only dealing with "ready to use"-classes is, what makes a good programer, who really understands what he is doing - not only give a class a try and the crying for help if it will not do the work.

  • Reading int problem

    Hi there, I am writing a client server program in which I get two integers in client and then I have to send them to the server. I have sent the integers in client as follows:
    outToServer.writeInt(x); // where outToServer is the DataOutputStream object reference
    outToServer.writeInt(y);
    But when I try read at server as follows:
    int clientx = inFromClient.read();
    and when I do :
    System.out.println("clientx = "+ clientx);
    I get clientx = 0; instead of a specific number.
    Am I doing the right thing by using read() or is there any other way I can read an integer from the BufferedReader?

    DataInput/OutputStream must be used symmetrically. That means that if you write with writeInt, you must read with readInt, not Reader.read(). If you actually read the documentation for Reader.read(), you'll see it "reads one character from the input stream". That's obviously not what you want!
    Lesson, use it symmetrically! If you're writing with a DataOutputStream, read with a DataInputStream.

  • Read the good information from a record

    Hello all,
    I save in a record (RMS) following infomation:
    id - int
    webid - int
    del - int

    if I want read the name directly do I need to read all previous information (id, webid, del)? Do you know a way to read directly the name without reading the other information?
    Now my code is like :
    try {
                   RecordStore rs = RecordStore.openRecordStore(Produit.DB_PROD,true);
                   RecordEnumeration re = rs.enumerateRecords(new ObjShopperFilter(), new ObjShopperComparator(), true);
                 while (re.hasNextElement()){
                      ByteArrayInputStream stream = new ByteArrayInputStream(re.nextRecord());
                      DataInputStream reader = new DataInputStream(stream);
                      try {
                           reader.readInt();
                          reader.readInt();
                          reader.readInt();
                          String name = reader.readUTF();
                         reader.readLong();
                          if (reader.readInt()==id){

                      finally{
              catch (RecordStoreException rse){
                  System.out.println("RecordStoreException in Category.isUsed:001:" + rse + ":" + rse.getMessage());
              Could you help me ?
    Regards

    I think that my explanation wasn't good :(
    I don't want to find a special record...I want read a special part of a record.
    When I save a record I write in bytes values in int, string, double...(ex.: 1,"john",2.3).
    So my RMS contains some same records, for example
    1,"john",2.3
    2,"rose",3.4
    3,"Louis",3.0
    When I read all my records, I would like retrieve directly the String "john","rose"...
    My solution is to read each component of a record without save the read value (see my previous code...) until read the element that I want keep the value.
    Is it possible to read directly a part of a record?
    I hope that these explanation could help you to understand my needs.

  • How to port Personal Profile Application to PalmOS emulator

    Hi Everyone,
    I have implemented an application by using Personal Profile API in Linux RedHat9.0. But I don't know how to port the application to a PalmOS emulator.
    Would anyone advice me?
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards,
    Paul

    Yes, means you cannot currently. There is no Java Virtual Machine and matching Java Class Libraries supporting the Personal Profile which runs on a PalmOS device. Currently there are MIDP 1.0 implementations for Palm OS implemented in 68k. IBM is currently working with PalmOne and together we are developing a native ARM based MIDP 2.0, CLDC 1.1 solution for the PalmOS 5+ Tungsten devices.

              } catch (IOException ioe) {
                   System.err.println("initFile ioe " + ioe.getMessage());
                   return false;
         }The above process is taking abt 15sec for 126(NUMOFIMAGES) 212(HEIGHT) & 212(WIDTH) which are constants for me. How can I make this whole thing faster. Are there any other techniques to improve performance?
    Thanks

    Create your DataInputStream like this:
    dataInputStream = new DataInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(fileInput));
    Does that help?

  • Uccx 10.5 - Subsystem - Resourses showing "Error occured while reading the Resources"

    Can anybody point me in the direction to resolve this? I have can see all of the agents and supervisors if I check the "Desktop Admin" page on UCCX  get an Error "Error occured while reading the Resources" when I try to see agents etc in Subsystem - RMCM - Resources.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Struggling with DataInputStream and Socket...

    Hi all,
    I have the following problem. I need two remote hosts to exchange some data using a socket: the client is running on a Linux box and sends both ASCII and binary data. The server is running within a Tomcat server and needs to parse the ASCII text and then stores the (following) binary data in a DBMS. I chose to use DataInputStream to read from the socket: however, when I use the readUTF() function in order to get the ASCII data (the very first data sent is a simple banner) I get a EOFException (after some time, the banner is basically never read).
    DataInput Stream dis = new DataInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(client.getInputStream()));
    String line = dis.readUTF();
    java.io.EOFException
         at java.io.DataInputStream.readFully(Unknown Source)
         at java.io.DataInputStream.readUTF(Unknown Source)
         at java.io.DataInputStream.readUTF(Unknown Source)
         at neptuneconsole.XXXyyyZZZ.run(XXXyyyZZZ.java:86)
         at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
    client is a socket instantiated by a ServerSocket that was created by SSLServerSocketFactory.
    Any help will be REALLY appreciated!

    readByte() itself does not block until some data are availableWhat does this mean? What does it return? If it returns -1, then you have reached the end of the stream - i.e. you have read everything the other end has written so far and the other end has closed the connection so it's never going to write anything more. If it's returning something other than -1, then that's the byte you've read from the connection.
    This will really be a lot easier if you show us code.
