PAN Newsreader & multipart binaries

PAN (133-4) has stopped being able to preview images is they are multipart (single part images are still OK). I get the following message:
Attachment not shown: MIME type image/jpeg; filename 199.jpg
Any ideas?

  • [SOLVED] Pan newsreader - all text is blocked out

    HI Folks,
    I am new to Arch linux, just got up and running last week.  Everything's going great so far, I have Gnome3 installed and most of my productivity applications are humming along, I'm really loving it.
    The only snags so far are that the gnome-shell crashes a bit too frequently, not sure what there is to do about that, and my Pan newsreader text won't display correctly.   I installed Pan by downloading the package build, I ran makepkg -s and then installed with "pacman -U pan-git-139.129.g459f52e-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz".   It looks like the install went fine, and I can launch pan and subscribe to newsgroups.
    However, all of the text in the application is blacked-out (looks like someone hit it with a black hilighter)
    When I select a message from a feed, the text appears fine.  But when I deselect the text it looks like a black hilighter hit it.
    I installed the infinality font set, I'm not sure if that's part of the problem.
    Thanks for any pointers,
    Chris

    What configure options did you use to build the package?
    I see in the PKGBUILD '-with-gtk3', so try to build it with gtk2 instead, it should be more stable.
    I don't see much development for this appli presently.

  • Pan Newsreader AUR Packages Confusion...

    Hi,
    not sure of this is the right group for this, but i just built a new Arch box and was installing my standard newsreader, Pan (v.0135) from files in the AUR, a process I've completed successfully a couple of times on other machines.  Odd thing was, the version I installed kept segfaulting when I tried to delete article headers, a basic app function.   I tried recompiling, checked the dependencies individually, etc., but nothing worked.
    Then, I carefully scanned the AUR package list again and noticed that the package I had compiled, "pan-git," was not the only AUR package listed for Pan.  I uninstalled pan-git then built and installed the correct pan-gtk3, which also gave me a functioning Pan v. 0.135, but this one doesn't constantly segfault--yay!
    Maybe I missed something in the documentation that explains why package pan-git exists, but for now, it's confusing to anyone wanting to build a functioning instance of Pan on their system.
    The package that actually compiled to a properly functioning application is this one, pan-gtk3:

    thanks

  • Slow Advanced HSI In Brooklyn (Ocean Hill)

    I have the High Speed Internet Advanced product from Verizon, rated between 4 and 7 Mbps.
    Up until approximately 2 months ago I consistently received between 4.5 and 5.2 Mbps Internet speed. Since then the best I get is 3.5 Mbps. At times the service slows to a painful .5 Mbps.
    Sunday Evening into Monday morning May 5/6 I spent on the phone with a Verizon 1st level support tech. She had me do all kinds of obvious things (checking for filters on all the phones, etc.)
    The tech finally acknowledged the issue lies in the Verizon central office that services my area. The tech promised the problem with my Internet speed would be resolved.
    It is now 10 days plus later. The speed I receive is still way below the minimum I should be getting. And, at times the speed slows down so badly, I can barely use The Internet at all. Obviously the problem at the central office remains.
    Is anyone else in the Bed-Stuy/Ocean Hill/Browmsville area of Brooklyn having a similar issue with Verizon HSI?

    Running a good quality wire CAT5, no need for CAT6,  directly to the NID for the DSL modem jack may help. That is what I had done with mine. Depending on the number of loads or amount of wire in the house could also cause issues. But if the user's signal quality is not being pulled low due to a wiring issues, it would usually indicate a problem elsewhere. Unless there was noise being picked up on the premises wiring. Wire DSL directly to the NID and install a filter there for all other in house wiring may help. There used to be available what was called a NID Filter, and I am sure you can still get them.
    Ideal Connection if house wiring is an issue, or very old, and lengthy. Install a filter / splitter at the NID.
    Run CAT5 directly to the NID location, and install a dedicated jack for the DSL modem.
    Remove all in house wiring from the NID.
    Connect piece of CAT5 from the NID to the filter / splitter input
    Connect all existing phone lines to the phone side of the filter output.
    Connect the new DSL CAT5 directly to the NID before the filter / splitter, or to the DSL side of the filter / splitter, depending on the device purchased.
    This will take all the existing premises wiring out of the picture unless there is a short circuit or excessive load somewhere in the house.
    At this point all the single filters could be removed because the DSL is filtered at the NID.

    #3 Have the provider run a local loop test to see if any problems are indicated. If there are, then they could run the test with everything in the house disconnected, except the new DSL modem connection. If issues are still indicated, then the DSL provider needs to make connections on the local loop. Another user told me that they had issues when it rained, and it was because construction had left a splice box open on a line somewhere.

  • Connecting Issues

    I currently have DSL access with a Westell A90-750015-07 router and a Cisco wireless adapter. I seem to have issues connecting at times to the Internet, especially since we had a recent storm. One night I'm able to get on, the next I can't. And when I am able to go online, it is usually after several tries. My computer is in the bedroom and the router is in the kitchen, which may have something to do with the connection issue because there is not a closer jack.
    Usually what I end up doing is turning off the computer, restarting, or shutting down completely, turning off the router and taking the adapter out and turning back on. Usually I could then get back on, but seems a hassle.
    Since I got on now, the connection has stayed on, thankfully. Sometimes it goes while I'm on, then will come back on. It's a pain because it's been like this consistently.
    I have a networking cable, however, it's been a while since I used it. Verizon's Technical Support helped me the last time. I'm not sure if something needs to be reconfigured since the storm so this does not keep happening. They did something while the cable was plugged in, then I was able to go back to using the wireless adapter to connect. I don't suppose anyone would have instructions. I'm also unsure which one it gets plugged into. I believe it's Ethernet on my HP desktop, but on the router I'm unsure which one it goes into, like E1/Uplink, E2, E3, or E4/Data. I tried earlier with all of them, even turned the router off, then would restart the computer but nothing happened.
    Any guidance would be much appreciated.

  • Speed has dropped...again

    After 2 weeks of calls to tech support and a visit from a technician this past weekend, my speed was back to near the 3 Mbps I'm provisioned.  The technician "cleaned-up" some wiring in the box outside, and tested the line.  He said everything looked great, and it could probably handle 5 Mbps.
    However, as usual, that only lasts a couple of days, now I'm right back down to 1.3-1.7 Mbps.  **bleep**???  I'm really getting tired of calling support every other day to get this back to "full speed".
    Before anyone asks, I cannot provide transceiver stats, since my D-link 2750B does not offer this option.
    Is there any way to get their "optimization" turned off, so that my speed is not cut in half every time there is a hiccup in the line?

    Ok.
    #1 An original or very old style NID with a spark gap and ground wire can even get spiders in it that could cause an issue. Inspect the NID first before thinking of changes or wiring.

    I heard from another user that
    Giganews is being watched very closely because of multipart binaries, and pirated material. MP3s and Video Content. 7 years ago you could get 10-20 MP3 albums in a single day, and that was with a 15/5 fios connection. So they started providing an encrypted connection service for an added fee. I have not messed with news groups for a very long time. Now with deep packet inspection, and other enforcement, I would not even think of it. No news I want there. But there may be content that people want? They may even be checking and limiting speed from that domain. Never tested. But let me see. It looks as if reverse trace routes and speed tests are being blocked by Verizon from Giganews to my router.

    Hello,

    I have it set up like this:  DSL modem handling DHCP to a wireless 4 port router.    Modem is a westell G90-610015-20.

    Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that your non-bogan public IP Address will show up.  It might shown up as the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Either remove that line or show only the first two octets. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
    For example this what I see

  • Is this speed normal??

    I have Verizon DSL in my home (I'd love to get FIOS but it's not available here) and the speeds have always been pretty slow. I chalked it up to my computer not being that great, and didn't worry about it... but I've recently upgraded to a MUCH faster and better computer, and the internet speeds are still dismal.
    Speeds tests have never even hit 1mbs for download...
    I have called Verizon about this issue, and all they've ever had me do was double check that I have filters on all the other phone jacks, and reset my modem a bunch of times.
    Am I doomed to these speeds forever? If so, I'm gonna have to go to TWC.

    Ok.

  • Has anyone else noticed: PAN - is a resource hog

    I was just wondering if anyone else had run across this?
    When I start PAN it seems fine.  Once I start downloading headers, it will eat up a LOT of my RAM along with swap.  I've used Knode, and it handles just fine.
    I have a gig in this laptop and I've watched conky/torsmo and seen it use up most of my ram and also start chewing up swap.

    Quick 'n dirty Pan-cvs PKGBUILD:

    make
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
    nzb's is a planned function, for now you just have to open them with a text-editor and view them (nzb's are plain xml) OR use nzbget
    If you get problems with with missing files:
    export ACLOCAL_FLAGS="-I /usr/share/aclocal/"
    export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=":/usr/lib/pkgconfig"
    I had to edit this line in /opt/gnome/bin/gnome-autogen.sh:
    REQUIRED_AUTOMAKE_VERSION=${REQUIRED_AUTOMAKE_VERSION:-1.4}
    to:
    REQUIRED_AUTOMAKE_VERSION=${REQUIRED_AUTOMAKE_VERSION:-1.9}
    There probably is a more elegant solution I'm not aware of at the moment, and I think it's a little bit too dirty to change it automatically with the PKGBUILD, so you have to do it manually.
    I don't even know if the above is nowadays needed, but it was when Pan development just restarted.
    I've also made a PKGBUILD for nzbget:
    # Contributor: Bart Leusink <[email protected]>
    pkgname=nzbget
    pkgver=0.2.2
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="A command-line based binary newsgrabber for Linux supporting nzb-files."
    license=
    depends=()
    makedepends=()
    url="http://sourceforge.net/projects/nzbget"
    install=
    source=(http://dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/$pkgname/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
    md5sums=("377baa033ea8be97422034fd6b3179d6")
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver/
    ./configure
    make
    mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/bin/
    cp nzbget $startdir/pkg/usr/bin
    After you've installed it, you still have to run the following commands before you can run the application:
    mkdir ~/.nzbget/
    cp nzbget.cfg.example ~/.nzbget/nzbget.cfg
    After that, you may want to edit nzbget.cfg

  • Why does Apple Mail preview pane display only sender's first name?

    Some, but not all, of the mail I receive shows only the sender's first name in the preview pane. I've checked the three areas others have mentioned as possible sources of the problem: 1.) Both first and last names appear for these senders in my Contacts. 2.) None of these senders appear with only first names in my Previous Recipients list. 3.) The full headers don't show first name only.
    When I used Entourage, emails from the same senders never showed only first names in the preview pane.
    Is this a bug in Apple Mail? Is there a workaround?

    I came here looking for a similar answer. Some of my HTML messages show up just fine in Mail 3.5. Others, I get the plane text alternative or a bunch of raw HTML. With no answer in sight on the Discussion groups, I decided to look at the raw mail message of one of the offending emails.
    Under the View menu I found a sub menu called Message then there are 6 choices beneath that:
    *Long Headers*
    *Raw Source* (which is what I was looking for)
    +(and then below a separator I found a surprise!)+
    *Plain Text Alternative* (grayed out)
    *Previous Alternative* (grayed out)
    *Next Alternative* (available)
    *Best Alternative* (available)
    Only the appropriate ones for the current message display format are available.
    So low and behold selecting "next" or "best" changed my message into fully readable HTML format with pictures, formatting, etc.
    I am assuming that something in the way that the multipart MIME message is assembled by some senders' systems does not sit well with Mail. I'm not going to bother figuring it out, but I'm sure that close examination of the raw message would give some clues.
    Now if only I could figure out how to choose the message format based on the sender, I could eliminate having to change every message that comes in from that sender. Maybe AppleScript and a Mail Rule?

  • Images in mac mail (reading pane especially)

    When I open mac mail (and sometimes the internet) images do not automatically resize to fit the screen (reading pane). I have to scroll around to see the full image. I have tried adjusting the panes and font size, but it doesn't work. This normally occurs with newsletter type emails. Does anyone know how to get the emails to fit the page again? They remain not correctly sized when I open them out of the reading pane to full size as well (meaning I still have to scroll around). Font only emails seem to not be affected.
    I did not have this problem until the Genius bar erased my user id and created a new account last weekend.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

    If you view the full headers of the message, what is its "Content-Type"? If it's text/plain, that would be the problem: HTML email should be text/html. If it's multipart/alternative, make sure you're viewing the HTML alternative.
    Under View in the Menu bar, select Message > All Headers to get Content-Type.
    Is it all emails or emails from specific senders?
    Are the emails forwarded?
    Log into yur account using webmail. Does it show correctly?
