Panasonic 16/9 1024x768 plasma monitor

I have a TH-42PHD8UK professionnal plasma display from Panasonic. This display has VGA, Component, Composite and HDMI inputs.
I would be interested in connecting a Mac Mini to this display to set up a Media Center.
My question is : Will I get any distortion considering this display uses rectangular pixels ?
How should I use this display to prevent distortion ?
Please help... I am sure I am not the only one with this issue. Many plasma displays are using rectangular pixels.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   TH42PHD8UK Panasonic

I did not buy the Mac mini yet. I first want to be sure it will work well with my plasma.
What do you mean with wide resolution ?
Is your Sony also using rectangular pixels ?
If I have to use the HDMI input, I have another question : I am already using this input with my DVD player, how can I share this input between my dvd player and the mac mini ?

  • Connecting ATV to older 2004 or 2005 Panasonic model TH-42PX20 plasma TV

I have a 2004 or 2005 Panasonic model TH-42PX20 plasma TV that I am trying to use with Apple TV ( 2nd generation). The TV has the HDMI port but cant access the HDMI input mode. The sequence of modes accessible from the TV/VIDEO button should be TV-Component 1- Component 2 - HDMI - Video 1 - Video 2 - Video 3, but I only get TV and Component 1. Any idea how I can access the HDMI input mode to access ATV screen?

Check your TV settings, sometimes there is a feature to bypass certain inputs.

  • Which Graphics Card for a 40 inch HDTV LCD or Plasma Monitor for the best

Which Graphics Card for a 40 inch HDTV LCD or Plasma Monitor for the best value and price?
Hi, I was wondering if I replace my current standard graphics card for a MacPro Early 2008 for a graphics card for a 40" HDTV, which was is the best for the price and value? My current card when used with such a large monitor/ TV isn't very good, I think? So thinking of updating...

This sounds like a price match question. Without knowing all the details, it sounds like a yes for the Westinghouse, but I would encourage you to read the price match policy link here:

If all you care about is 1080p definition and an HDMI input at a $300 price point then this tv should suit your needs. (As a bonus it has 120Hz refresh for smoother action scenes.)http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Westinghouse+-+40%26%2334%3B+Class+-+LCD+-+1080p+-+120Hz+-+HDTV/5772998....

  • Can I present HD (1280x720) on an HD 1024x768 plasma, efficiently?

I'm building Keynote presentations to be displayed on HD format (1024x768 rectangular pixels) plasma displays. I have been developing the presentations in the displayed aspect ratio using 1280x720 slides. My hope was that the slides would be scaled to fit when sent to the secondary display having a resolution of 1024x768.
What appears to happen is the slides are scaled down retaining the aspect ratio and presenting 1024x576 on the displays. I don't want to try to build them squashed as 1024x768 in order to view them correctly on the monitors.

The "right" resolution is 1024x768 with pixels stretched horizontally to achieve a 16:9 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, that's not a selection directly available in Keynote.
These monitors do have a zoom mode. In "zoom" mode after some display size and position adjustments to the monitor, the presentation can be aligned to the full display.
A software solution would be preferred of course. I wonder if other presentation packages (e.g. ProPresenter) allow for these rectangular pixel displays.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • Video does not play on external plasma monitor

    Forum
    Here is my situation.
I received footage captured with a Panasonic HVX-200, the specs are:
    29.97fps, Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p 60, frame size: 960x720
I use an Intensity Pro video card for monitoring on a 42" Samsung LCD. When the Intensity Pro card is set to HDTV 720p 60 (1280x720) the video does not play on the LCD, all I get is a still frame. When the Intensity Pro card is set to Intensity NTSC 720x486, it plays on the LCD but it's not at its best quality. The footage always plays fine in the FCP Canvas and Viewer windows.
Any ideas on what may be going on?

YOu need to be using DVCPRO HD 720p60 8-bit 59.94...and whatever DECKLINK header that is there for the card. I use the Kona 3, so mine is AJA KONA DVCPRO HD 720p60 8-bit 59.94. 59.94 because no matter what frame rate you shoot, the video stream is a 59.94 stream to the monitor.
I hope that does it. No experience with the Intensity.

  • Stuck with 1024x768 resolution/monitor/display

After re-installing Snow Leopard on my friend's mac,
My screen resolution/monitor/display can only get 1024x768. System Prefs doesnt allow me other display options, they are blank.
Asked, Googled, people say it may be bad/corrupted video kext.
    Is this the case?
If so how to find the folder where video kext is and
where to get the clean video kext file to replace?
    Thanks so much!

Reinstall OS X, but erase the drive first. If you reinstalled over an existing but corrupted system it could cause this problem.

  • 42 '' Panasonic pro Plasma display or FSI 17'' monitor ??

i want to buy a second monitor for my grading suite. I already have a Sony CRT ( SD-HD ) that's still in great condition ( bought it new 3 years ago ) and i want to add a nice LCD/Plasma.
Is the Panasonic 42'' professional series plasma good enough for color grading ?? or should i stick to the FSI 17'' even though i already have a nice CRT? Thanks

Is the Panasonic 42'' professional series plasma good enough for color grading ?? or should i stick to the FSI 17''
    Apples and Oranges.
I am aware that the FSI-17 is very well regarded and from what I've seen it is very attractive, and its reputation is for reasonable accuracy, not to mention good reports for after-sales support. All very, very important. My quibble is that its way too small. Even before HD, a 19" 4x3 CRT was considered to be a minimum screen size for serious work.
Bigger is better up to a point.
The problem with most plasmas (don't bother with LCD unless it is professionally calibrated and maintained), is that there really aren't any grade-quality models, and the higher-end still suffer from a certain amount of drift, dynamic contrast shifts and burn-in (not as pronounced as in the past) although a very beautiful palette. You will need to support a Plasma with a LUT- or other- interface which will also need to be continuously checked, but will nevertheless wobble throughout a longer session, no matter how iron-clad your calibration is.
    Its a tough situation.

  • 1024x768 Resolution on a 16:9 Pioneer Plasma 4350

I am about to purchase a Dual Core Mac Mini. I currently have a 43" Pioneer Plasma TV, model 4350. The resolution is 1024x768. I want to ensure that the mini will work fine with the tv. I really would not like to play with overscan or underscan or mess with a program like DisplayConfigX.
Also, I am planning on using the VGA connection as opposed to the DVI connection? Will this work well.

I also am hoping to see a definitive answer to this question. It's not a mini, but we sometimes use a Pioneer PDP-4304 (43-inch/1024x768) plasma with a (2004) 15-inch G4, aluminum PowerBook (widescreen 1280x854 pixels) via a VGA cable and the Apple adaptor.
Out of the box, the PowerBook always finds the connected Pioneer plasma and autosyncs to this display (which automatically gets added to the OS X System Preference: Displays menu). OS X and the PowerBook's 64MB video card just finds and uses the correct resolution (1280x768/60Hz), with no overscan issues and no need for third-party, display (resolution) management software like Display ConfigX. However, this widescreen PowerBook does have a native resolution that is slightly different from the plasma's 16:9 aspect ratio (more like 15:9 I think) and it uses square pixels. The Pio uses (horizontally) rectangular pixels, and so the PowerBook output is scaled down vertcally by a few pixels -- though it's barely perceptable).
A 2004 12-inch G4 PowerBook and a 2005 iBook (each 1024x768 pixels and not widescreen) also autosync to the Pio with no problems. However, like standard definition TV, this PowerBook and iBook default to make use of the center portion on the 16:9 plasma (Again, the computers use square pixels, the 43-inch Pio plasmas use rectangular pixels).
I would think that the Intel-based mini's combination of OS X/ and integrated graphics also would autosync and connect seamlessly with any Pio plasma (knock on wood).

  • HD Monitor Query

I am considering setting up a FCP Hi-Def facilty for 4:4:4 Uncompressed HD editing. I'm expecting most of my work to be for film and am not intending to offer grading as an option (a finishing facility down the road would do that).
With this in mind, how important is a monitor? At the moment I'm thinking of running the suite with a dual-display set-up plus a 50" Plasma as an external monitor. I've been told I should invest in a Broadcast HD monitor nonetheless but they seem a bit expensive (comparitive to the rest of the suite) and I'm none too sure that it would be necessary.
Is it just one of those things that people would expect when they hire out a HD suite, or would it be extraneous to my purposes? I'd appreciate any thoughts on the subject (especially from anyone whose been in a similar situation).
    20 iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

my favorite high def monitors right now are made by ikegami. lcd and plasma monitors, although sexy, are terrible for anything beyond a client presentation monitor.
if you're gearing up to work with 4:4:4 video, it's expensive and 5k for a 14 inch monitor is not expensive relatively speaking. i was in a digital intermediate suite not long ago looking at a 16mm film that had been transferred to D5on a 32 inch sony bvm monitor. very, very nice but with a hefty price tag.
Don't skimp when it comes to monitoring. also, get your crt while you can, panasonic and sony have ceased production (with the exception of the bvm line) and jvc and reduced it's amount of product as well. ikegami seems to be the only manufacturer with a full line of crts anymore.

  • Settings for Panasonic EDTV?

I'd like to hook up my new mini to the 42" EDTV Panasonic monitor via VGA.
It seems to be ok at 800X600 but something still seems stretched. I think the native resolution of this monitor is 852X480, but when I choose that from the displays menu (in system prefs), the picture disappears and the only way to get it back is oull out the vga cable and restart.
What do you think is going on here and what are the best settings for my plasma monitor?

Be careful with what connection you use. You need to connect to the TV with either HDMI or DVI. I have a 42" Sony HDTV and tried to connect using the DVI TV adaptor connecting with S Video. I sucked, so I sprung for an extra HDMI cord and now it's everything I was hoping for - crystal clear, normal dimensioned wide screen. The borders are a little smaller than the screen and overscan seems to be either too small or too big, but it's very close to correct and good enough for my purposes right now. Check your cable type and good luck!

  • Spyder3 with External Monitor???

I have recently bought the Spyder 3 and calibrated my lcd monitor connected via DVI to my Mac Pro.
I also have a Panasonic Plasma monitor I would like to somehow calibrate. The plasma has an HDSDI input that I have connected to my Kona3.
I am assuming the Spyder will not work for this?
If anyone has any advice that would be great!
    Thanks,
    Jesse

Spyders will calibrate to both the HD and SD color space quite happily when drive by a computer with a saved Colorsync profile. Color accuracy, including gamma match, is normally within a dE of 3 or less, which means that you cannot see any difference from a correct response - a dE of more than 5.
The Colorsync profile works as a very good LUT for the monitor.
The monitor with calibration is better the all of the big screen HD TVs that I have measured, even those professionally calibrated. Most HD TVs have very limited color correction capability unless you get into the service menu, and even then it is a very simple 2 point correction.
I would agree that a recently calibrated video monitor in the $5,000+ catagory will be better, but only with good fresh calibration.

  • How to connect HP Pavilion to HD TV as monitor

Bought an HP Pavilion P6204Y approx Dec 2009. Would like to attach the PC to my Panasonic TV as it's monitor (just got rid of cable). PC only has VGA & S out. TV only has S and HDMI in. YouTube says to use DVI to HDMI. Can I add DVI to this PC or am I stuck with VGA to HDMI, or  S to S....are those 2 choices even viable and would the picture quality be any good with either of those options? I have rarely used my PC (prefer laptop for everyday use) and would hate to have to buy a new PC. Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance for any help, advice, guidance, etc.

    JAR1969, welcome to the forum.
You can add DVI to the computer, but it means adding a new dedicated video card.  Since most newer mid-level cards require at least 350W to 400W to operate properly, a new power supply unit (PSU) would be necessary.
I like OCZ and Corsair PSU's.  Either will provide you with clean, stable power.  Be certain that the PSU that you choose has the appropriate PCI Express power cables to power the card if necessary.
I like XFX, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY video cards in that order.  This is due to many years using different brands and frequenting enthusiast forums.

  • I want to use multiple iPads as external monitors from a PC using the iPad VGA adapter (wired)

I want to send a VGA signal to a couple of iPads using them as monitors. I currently use a pair of regular 13" VGA 1024x768 lcd monitors looping thru an LCD projector displaying the same signal sent to the projector.
I want to use the iPad VGA adapter and WIRE them in just like a convention LCD monitor. Yes there are apps like air display and others but they don't allow cloning and have latency issues and must be networked. I need an app to use the VGA adapter and actually wire them in using a VGA signal from my existing VGA distrubution amp.
The size of the iPad is perfect for my application however I cannot find an app to let me send a signal into the iPad via VGA adapter.
    Any ideas?

  • Editing with Mac Monitor and TV.

When I try to view a TV and monitor simultaneously for editing I do not always get a picture on the TV. Sometimes sound only. I use a Panasonic GS 400 connected between monitor and TV. In preferences I have set iMovie to playback through camera.
It appears if I am viewing clips in the Clip Viewer and stay in that mode, even when moving the curser the pictures are OK. If I now click on a clip in the Clips Pane the picture on the TV disappears.
To get it back if I click on preferences>playback icon and then come out of preferences the TV picture returns.
As a matter of interest I have tried different connecting cables and a Canon camcorder with no change.
Is their anyone that can Help Please!

    Hi
    Recognice this wagely.
Using two ways to connect to TV (one at a time)
    • Canopus ADVC 300
    • Sony TRV 900E
The Sony Camera keeps contact all the time but my Mac dislikes it when starting-up
    (has to be de-connected)
The Canopus drops contact from time to time - toggling the Analog or Digital input switch
    most often re-connects.
Not sure if there is a fix for this but You might try:
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    iMovie pref file resides:
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • Playing out to video monitor

Hi. I'm running FCP 4.5HD, and currently using dual Apple Cinema Displays. I use 2 Sony HDV decks, which connect to a Panasonic HDTV as my video monitor. When I capture or when I mix down to video or tape, the video plays on both the HDTV and on my displays. However, I am not getting a signal through the deck to the HDTV when playing clips or sequences within FCP. I have my video out set to Apple Firewire.
How can I get the video to playout to the deck and monitor all the time?
    Thanks,
    Cesare

If it is all DV, then...
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
Shane's Stock Answer #8: External Monitor Viewing
If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/monitor via RCA or S-Video.
Then start up your camera and TV, then open FCP.
Go to the View Menu, choose > External Video > All Frames
VIEW>Video Playback should be “Apple Firewire NTSC” (If you are using an NTSC set)
VIEW>Audio playback should be “Audio follows Video”
Technically, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the A/V DEVICES tab.
If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.
