Panasonic Camcorder not working in iMovie 11

Hi. I bought a new Panasonic X900M Camcorder which is supposed to work in iMovie 11. When I connect the camcorder to my iMac (OSX10.7.5), iPhoto pops up for some reason and then the rolling ball shows. I do a force quit. I would have thought that iMovie 11 would automatically open. I have to manually open iMovie up but when I try to import anything, it too shows the rolling ball. When I connect the camcorder, a file opens up on the desktop but inside it are just a few video clips and photos. Most of my video work doesn't even show. And I can't drag and drop the few that are there, to iMovie.
Any thoughts about this? I have used the old iMovie HD for years and found it very easy to use with my old DV camcorder. This new camcorder and new iMovie has me wondering.
Thanks!
Richard

iMovie can import 30P and 30i and 60i from this camcorder. If the camcorder shoots 60P AVCHD, iMovie cannot import the 60P clips. Also, iMovie will not know how to handle 3D clips.
You can use Final Cut Pro X, which can import 60P. You can also get a third party converter like ClipWrap or Voltaic to process the 60P clips into an h.264 MOV format that iMovie can handle.
Going forwade, set your camcorder to 30P for best results. If you shoot a lot of slow motion, then it may be worth investing in Final Cut Pro, ClipWrap, or Voltaic.

  • Panasonic Camcorder not working

I have connected my Panasonic NV-GS5 to my Mac Notebook with the firewire Cable. Unfortunately nothing happens. It doesn't start automatically as the tutorial says. It looks as if the camcorder is not being recognised. Can anyone help? I'm not sure what to try.

Sandy, It sounds as if you've plugged in a USB cable (..which gives access to the card which has photos on it..) instead of a 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire/DV/i.Link cable ..which gives access to the video on the tape. (The FireWire cable probably did NOT come with the camera, and you may need to buy one.)
The ends of a USB cable, for feeding photos into your Mac, look like this:
The ends of the necessary 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire (..also known as DV or i.Link..) cable for feeding video into your Mac look like this:
The big end goes in your Mac, and the small end plugs into the 'DV' socket of your camcorder.

It sounds like you have assigned the primary click on the trackpad to something else, perhaps a gesture.
Use your mouse, login and then open the Trackpad preference pane and see how you have the interface configured.
Oh and you can have both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad powered up and working at the same time. No need to keep moving batteries around.

  • The 'share' feature is not working in iMovie...?

The 'share' button does absolutely nothing. I went through the same upgrade on my daughters Mac (Mavericks etc), and it works perfectly well on hers. Does this mean I should re-install iMovie? If so, how on earth to do I unravell the mystery of achieving that?

I have the same problem. The 'share' feature is not working in iMovie...?
I deleted iMovie from the Applications folder and emptied the Trash. But the App Store still shows iMovie as "Installed" so it won't reinstall. What else should I try?
Why has Apple not issued a fix for the "Share" bug? It means that iMovie 10.0 is unusable. Little by little the quality of Apple products is sliding downhill.

  • Microphone not working on imovie HD

    Hey,
I'm doing a stop motion animation, but my internal microphone has seemed to stop working on my imovie. It has worked before because I only wanted certain sections of a song to be playing whilst the film was going, but now it doesn't seem to want to work, I have rebooted, and downloaded the software again (because i originally had imovie '08) but it still isn't working!
If I cant solve that dilemma does anyone know how to cut songs on imovie, is it even possible? So only say 30 seconds of the song is actually playing
    Thanks!

    Hi
If You have a clip with a song. Cutting the clip will also cut the audio.
Extracting audio makes an audio copy on one of the audio tracks and mutes the audio on the clip.
This extracted audio can be cut in the same way as a video clip [cmd-T] and at Playhead.
If the microphon stops working I would start with:
    • Under Apple left top on menu - down to system prefs - sound/audio - cheque on audio in that
microphone is selected and that level is increased so that it indicates You testing it.
    • If still not working - delete iMovie pref file - or - rather start a new user/acount, log into this and re-try.

  • Help on purchasing a dvd camcorder to work with imovie

hello out there...was wondering which camcorder that has a dvd burner works best with imovie and osx...i want a sony, but i thought the small dvd's did not work on osx. presently, i have a digital8 and use a firewire connection to ingest video for editing with imovie. thanks for any help...

... boxes that holds DVD and hard drive recorders:
These files are intended for "one time" captures.
The file format is not intended for editing.
I totally agree with your recommendation: try to avoid DVD and harddisk camcorders at this point if you plan to edit on a Mac. Not only is software support seriously lacking, those Mini-DVDs don't even work with slot-loading drives that are common on Mac's.
But... there is nothing wrong with the MPEG-2 compression used on DVDs. Just look at HDV: It uses the same MPEG-2 compression to fit the the HD video into the space of a SD MiniDV tape. iMovie converts HDV video streams during capture into a format that is easier for editing - that's why the files on your harddisk are 4 times as big as the data on the tape. The quality of video captured by most consumer camcorders is more limited by the optics and the video sensor (in particular indoors, with less than perfect lighting), than the recording format and media. And yes, you can edit MPEG-2 just fine, it is just more challenging to get it working right.
I used to tell all my friends to stay away from DVD camcorders, too, but then broke down and very reluctantly bought a DVD camcorder recently. It's mainly used for recording music lessons, with instant and repeated replay. It took me some tinkering to work out a good workflow for editing with iMove. I did some side-by-side comparisons with a similarly priced MiniDV camcorder (Canon DC50 vs. Sony TRV-33). Overall, the video clips were almost identical from either camcorder, with the DVD camcorder producing slightly better video in some situations. But as I said in the beginning, that is probably mostly a result of the better video sensor and the optical image stabilization in this particular model.
So how does my workflow go:
    - Use DVD-RWs, formatted in Video-VR mode, and prefinalized. This allows
you to pop out the DVD from the camcorder at any time and immediately
use it in your DVD player or computer without another time-consuming
    finalization step.
    - Find a Windows PC to copy the video files from the DVD to my Mac.
Mac OSX cannot read the filesystem used by Video-VR discs without
additional software like Roxio's Toast (which I don't have). Besides, all
    my Macs are slot loading.
    - Convert the clip with the Quicktime MPEG-2 plugin and MPEG Streamclip
    to DV format.
    - Finally, import the clips into iMovie.
Workable yes, but neither convenient nor esay. Stick with MiniDV.

  • How can I get my new camcorder to work with iMovie?

    Hey
I just bought the new Panasonic SDR-SW20 and it doesn't work with a Mac.
At least that is what I read at amazon.com.
The file types it records in are .MOD files. Can these be converted?
And if they can, how do I do that and what program do I need?
Could someone maybe explain to me how I can get it to work with iMovie?
    Thanks.
    Bye Sandra

    Hi Sandy,
Yes, you bought the wrong format of cam for working easily with iMovie HD6. Your cam records in MPEG2, which will need to be converted to DV for use in iMovie. You might want to read what the following page says about that cam's format.
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Panasonic-SDR-SW20-Camcorder-Review-35018/F ormat.htm
It doesn't give a good review of the video quality and that will only get worse with the conversion necessary to work with it in HD6. If returning the cam for something more suitable is possible, unless you have bought this solely for its underwater capabilities, that might be your best bet. The best cam for use with iMovie HD versions is a miniDV cam using firewire, to capture to your Mac.
If you want to persue the workarounds, you will need to get MPEGStreamclip (free-Google it) and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 plug-in (cost $20.00), available at the Apple downloads site.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Camcorder that works with Imovie HD & 09?

My old jvc mini dv camcorder just died and I need a new video camera right away.
I use Imove HD 95% of the time because I haven't had an opportunity to sit down and learn Imovie 09.
Here is what I'm looking for:
    1. A camera that I could use with Imovie HD as well as one that would work with 09 once I get it figured out.
    2. Is a HD camcorder an option if I would like to use Imove HD or can HD video only be used with imovie )(?
    3. Price must be relatively inexpensive. With a newborn at home, money is very tight, but don't want to miss those special moment so I need something.
    4. I would love to be able to use a tapeless camera, but then I am forced to use 09, right?
Maybe I should just take the plunge and learn Imovie 09. Is it radically different than HD and if so, is it still as easy to use and figure out as HD?
Thanks for your help! I never thought purchasing a new video camera would be so difficult.

    1. You would need an HD camera that records to "tape" to work with the older version of iMovie. It must also have a Firewire connection to the computer. It would also work with later versions of iMovie (7 and 8).
    3. You decide after you've done your homework.
    4. Not supported by imovie version 6, or earlier.

  • IDVD is not working in IMOVIE

Hi, Couple of months ago I had to reinstall my Imac OS X 10.5 since then my iMovie's IDVD option is not working. I thought if I upgrade the OS and iLife it would solve the problem. Recently I upgrade my OS to 10.6.3 and Ilife to iLife 11. Even after I upgraded my IDVD option is not working on the iMovie. I can write dvd's using the regular IDVD program. But it's not working on the iMovie. Can any one help me out with this. I tried everything. Why the IDVD option on IDVD wouldn't work on my Imac.

I need to write the project to dvd directly using iDVD option in iMovie. That's what I can't do.
Some of us have found that Share to iDVD produces inferior quality DVDs than when exporting using Share to Media Browser (check posts by rrodby). At least, that was the case in iMovie '09 - not sure about iMovie '11. In iDVD, simply drag the exported movie into the Theme background from the Media>Movies tab.
The exported movie can also be used for other purposes, such as copying to a flash drive or external drive for viewing on a media player. The movie is located in the project's package contents. In Finder, right-click (or Control-click) on the project name and select "Show Package Contents". In the Movies folder you will see your exported movie. If you use Share to iDVD, you don't have independent access to your exported move.

  • ISight not working in iMovie only

Today I encountered an issue with my isight camera in imovie. Yesterday I was able to record with it just fine, but now when I click on the 'capture' button in the import window and then select an event location, the capture video screen freezes (though the cursor still works and iMovie still responds otherwise). The isight still works in Photo Booth. I've searched around but haven't been able to find this problem discussed previously. I restarted my computer and closed all other apps besides imovie. Any ideas?

Uh, yeah that was my fault. I was looking in the HD folder (my 'home' folder has a different name and i overlooked it).
    (1) All is well if the reason your home folder has a different name is as explained in this link:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8767.html
    (2) If you are using FileVault, turn it off or see http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27532
    (3) If you renamed your "home" folder (not a good thing in OS X), see this link:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428
Anyway, I found the correct plist file and trashed it, but unfortunately the problem persists when I reopen iMovie. The isight import video window freezes when I click capture and I can't see what is recording even though the light is on. Is it looking like the reset is the next option?
    (4) You can try the reset(s) any time you like. Unless your problem is solved otherwise, you should try all the relevant iSight Troubleshooting suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight does not operate correctly in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your built-in iSight still does not work, and if it does not show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
    (5) Your posted System Info shows that you are still using Mac OS X (10.6.1). Unless you have already used the Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Update, and regardless of whether you perform the reset(s), you should consider updating your Mac OS using the folloowing method:
     • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
     • Download and install the 10.6.3 Combo Update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017
     • Repair permissions again immediately after the restart that completes the update.
    Then test iMovie again.
Proper application of Combo Updates can sometimes correct a wide variety of problems, and it is so reliable that the Combo Update is now the ONLY way I update Mac OS X.

I have tried with several different songs, close and restarted imovie, restarted computer.  Nothing works.  I have no transitions or voice overs.  Just a clip with a song in background.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Viewer Not Working In iMovie 9

My iMovie 9 program has developed a number of problems since attempting to test drive iMovie 10.
In iMovie 9 now, when I move the curser to either the Project Library pane or the Event Library pane and hover over photos or movie clips, the Viewer remains black.  Previously, hovering over photos and clips would produce a representation of those photos and clips in the Viewer.  The photos were Aperture jpegs dragged into iMovie from the Finder, while the clips were QuickTime movies brought in using the Import command.
This problem exists for older Projects, as well as newly created Projects.
Strangely, the Viewer does show internally created items such as titles and maps.  And, both Project movies and Event clips will actually play in the Viewer if I click on them and press the space bar.
Not sure if two other issues are related, but 1) iMovie 9 now takes 5-10 minutes to open;  and 2) Attempting to create a QuickTIme movie of a Project using the Share command *always* produces the error: "Sharing Requires More Memory To Be Available. Quit iMovie and Relaunch It" .
*Question: Might I need to adjust any of the menu settings to correct this issue?  Special thanks to GeeD for patience and help with my previous iMovie question.

Thanks again for the help.  I did not find an iMovie LSSharedFileList in Preferences, though it existed several days ago.  I deleted it, along with an iMovieApp.plist. and a plist.lockfile, while trying to repair iMovie earlier.  Should iMovie be regenerating this file, in other words, does the absence of LSSharedFileList and plist.lockfile suggest a problem?
I also logged in to my computer as a Guest, and opened iMovie 9.  Although there were no Events or Projects, I did a few quick operations, and it worked perfectly (none of the problems I see while running as Admin).  Were you suggesting the Guest trial to see if there was a problem with access privileges?
Finally, I discovered two other files associated with iMovie 9:
    com.Apple.iMovieApp folder,   in
    /private/var/folders/49/wq/C/com.apple.iMovieApp
    com.apple.iMovieApp.savedState   in
    /Users/name/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.iMovieApp.savedState
Do these two files regenerate like the .plist files in Preferences?  Might these might be causing any problems, or could they need to be repaired in some way?

Are you actually seeing a noticeable difference in the fonts after conversion? While there are some difference between those fonts, they are very subtle differences and in all likelihood will not really change the look of the document.

  • Help!  iSight Not Working with iMovie!

I can't seem to use my iSight camera with iMovie. ?? The camera works with PhotoBooth, but with iMovie not even the "Record with iSight" button appears. I'm using iMovie 5 on an IMac G5 with a built-in iSight camera. Any suggestions on getting iSight to record to iMovie??

    You're welcome, -John
If you are following the directions in this Apple article
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2329.html,
    your iSight should be working.
If you have added any hardware or software since iMovie worked correctly for you, first rule out any Possible conflicts with your iSight.
If your problem is ONLY with iMovie, try this:
    • Quit iMovie if it is open.
    • Delete your iMovie preferences file:
     Finder > Go > Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iMovie.plist
    • If they exist, also delete any other "com.apple.iMovie" files that end in ".plist" in this folder, or example, "com.apple.iMovie2.plist" and / or "com.apple.iMovie3.plist".
    • Close those folders and launch iMovie again to check for proper functioning.
    • When you get iMovie working again after tossing your old .plist files, you will need to reset all preferences that you want to be different from the default values.
If you cannot make your iSight does not work in any app or in any User Account, you will need the help of an Apple Service Provider Technician to repair your iSight.
If only iMovie gives you trouble, even after dumping the iMovie preferences, I suggest you reinstall the iMovie application.
