Panasonic Cameras with FCP

I need to buy two cameras not for HD TV. I want to know if the AG-DVX100B (PANASONIC) and the AG-DVC20P (PANASONIC), work fine with Final Cut Pro

The DVX-100b is the best DV camera around.
Even though I don't have experience with it, the other one looks like a cheap shoulder cam.

  • With Muti-clip gone from FCP X, is there a new way to sync two cameras with FCP X

With Muti-clip gone from FCP X, is there a new way to sync two cameras with FCP X

I film with two cameras then copy the files from each camera into their own folders. I then use ClipWrap to convert the MTS files into AIC.  If the recording was one long contiguous session, many cameras will split the MTS files into 2GB chunks.  ClipWrap will Convert Multiple to Span to reassemble them properly.  With the AIC .MOV file from ClipWrap, I then use FCP X to Import the MOV files from camera 1 and camera 2.  I prefer to do it that way versus using FCP X Import from Camera.  I then move the clip from camera 1 onto the timeline in the "primary storyline" (FCP X terminology).  I drag the camera 2 clip above the camera 1 clip and line up the audio from the two cameras while that audio is still attached to the video so everything stays in sync.  FCP X has a way to automatically sync two soundtracks, but I have not gotten around to that yet.  With camera 2's clip attached to camera 1's clip as a "connected clip" above the camera 1 video, I then do an edit to go between the cameras as seems best to me.  When the connected clip of camera 2 video sits above the camera 1 video, it will take priority over the camera 1 video.  I then split camera 1's video clip taking out sections when I want to go back to the camera 1 view. Of course I can trim camera 2's clips until I get it the way I want it.  Since FCP X uses the magnetic timeline concept, and camera 2's clip is "connected" to the camera 1 clip, as you split and trim camera 2's clip, everything will stay in sync across the two camera "tracks".  When there is no camera 2 video above the camera 1 video, camera 1 video will be seen.  When camera 2 video is above camera 1 video, camera 2 video will be seen instead.  With a single editing pass, I can then do all the editing I need to go back and forth between two cameras.  The same concept is expandable to other camera "tracks" as long as you are using vertical position in the timeline to determine which camera is seen when.  If you would like for it to look like a multi-camera track composit like before FCP X, you can simply select all your clips and make a compound clip out of it.  You will then see the multiple camera clips side by side in a single "track".  Double click on that "clip" in that "track" to go into the structure and editing individual "tracks" around if needed.  Think of a compound track as what a sequence used to do.  Anyway, there may be other, and easier ways to do this, but with a single edit through my recording, I can easily and visually cycle back and forth between camera views.  It's just that things are called differently now ... and, as of this time, we do not have a single button camera switching function to let us view multiple cameras simultaneously and switch between them using a keystroke for each camera.  Still, I have a way to do it, and it has worked very well for me, in fact I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I could do multi-camera in post.  Hope this at least gives you one option.  Others may have a better way.  Best wishes.

  • HD cam with FCP 5.1.4 ?

Hi everybody, as I encounter big problems with my DV Canon XM1, I plan to buy a new one maybe HD cam.
I saw that most of those cams have USB connection and no more FW, will I be able to capture an HD cam from FCP ?
I doubt of it but can you tell me how could I do, would be very nice.
    Thanx

Most if not all of these camcorders record AVCHD. You can import these files through USB to ProRes or the AIC.
Depending on what you shoot though, I'd consider HDV tape cameras if you shoot with a lot of motion... the AIC codec isn't very clean, and ProRes is fine if there's not tons of movement in the shots. HDV will transcode to ProRes HQ which takes care of that, and it is supported natively in FCP (no transcoding works much like DV captures).
Also if budget allows, there are other choices here which are better video formats than HDV or AVCHD... P2 comes to mind, and just around the corner (say at NAB in April '09) there will very likely be a watershed of new cameras... RED is planning a whopper for example. Will just BLOW away anything in the price range. These cameras are shooting RAW photography... better than HD, can be transcoded to HD for delivery, but look like 35mm film. I gotta say, there are very big changes on the horizon in this area. Course, they will be likely in the 3-5k range in price though probably. Check out http://www.red.com for more if you're interested.

  • Importing/uploading from panasonic p2 with FCP 4.5

Is there any way to import HD files shot on a panasonic p2 using the 8GB memory cards onto a laptop using Final Cut Pro 4.5?
Alternatively, if I just copy everything inside the card icon when it comes up on my desktop over to my hard drive, will I then have usable files I can then import later into a later version of FCP?
    Thanks for your help.

Not possible. P2 support didn't hit FCP until version 5.0.4. And Raylight will not work with that version. YOu need to upgrade.
What you need to do is copy EVERYTHING OFF THE CARD..the entire CONTENTS folder and LASTCLIP file. But those in a separate folder that you name what you please, but DO NOT rename the other files ANYTHING. And be sure you get both items....VERY important.
    P2 workflow for FCP 5.0.4
There is a tutorial you must watch.

  • Cameras and FCP - 2

I'm back again ---- the Sony Webbie HD camera is a great little camera for certain purposes but I have now, after 2-3 weeks with it, found it to be unforgiving in too many ways to be a suitable family camera.
So - I am look at three additional Sony cameras, links below. If anyone has comments on them or experiences with them I would love to hear about them. I will be using this camera with FCP and DVDSP for burning DVDs, so any related comments are more than welcome. I am learning a lot, and appreciate all the help!

The last one is not available until March 1st, but any comments on the specs vs. FCP or DVDSp would also be helpful.
    Thanks,

I'm more than happy to consider something other than Sony. But I have a Panasonic 601 I am replacing and I was never all that impressed with that, or with Panassonic's service unit. From my 'former life' in video production I learned to stay away from JVC. I owned a Canon XL1 for a couple of years and I was impressed with it, so Canon offers some options.
Athough I now have a pair of 8GB Sony Duo Cards which will go to waste should I go non-Sony. Cie la Vie. Viva la eBay, I guess!
If you have some affordable Canon recommendations, that would be great. Any particular model you think stands above the rest for a consumer model? Must be HD and you know the rest.
    Thanks!

  • How can I find out the serial number for my FCE 4.0 that came with my old MacBook Pro?

When I try and open my old FCE projects on my new MacBook Pro, a dialog box pops up and asks me to input the serial number for my Final Cut Express program. The software came pre-loaded on my old MacBook Pro which died. Luckily, my local Apple store was able to transfer the fcp files to my new MacBook Pro, which came with FCP X installed. I just can't open those files without the serial number of the FCE 4.0 program.
    Message was edited by: Garyb1978

It is almost impossible to transfer FCE as there are so many essential hidden files that workers in an Apple Store will know nothing about. The app needs to be installed from the original DVD.
Other than buying another copy your only chance  (very remote) is to contact the Apple Store and see if they are able to get a replacement number from Apple.

  • NV-DA 1 PAL MiniDV camera uncompatible with FCP 5?

Hello, I've been trying to use my Panasonic NV-DA 1 PAL Mini DV camera with Final Cut Pro 5 on my Mac Powerbook and it is not recognizing the camera.
Is this 1999 model camera uncompatible now with Final Cut Pro 5 for some reason and why? The camera is not recognized in IMovie either but works with FCP 3 and Movie Maker on the PC.
    Thank you.

    Dear Studio X et al,
Thanks for your responses. They have been somewhat helpful in pointing me in the right direction. I am still experiencing a problem, possibly software level, though I have eliminated a few causes/issues at the hardware level.
    A. Here's what I've done so far:
    1. Before seeing this response, I followed the advice to FIX QT7 (which I had already been running, but had another version in my 'receipts' that has now been deleted).
Result: I was able to connect to my camera one time successfully via Final Cut Pro 5. However, upon initial success, I was unable to reconnect thereafter.
Learned: My camera works with FCP5.
Assumption: It must be either a software or hardware issue.
    2. I then saw the post re: firewire bus reset. I've followed the simple--and oh-so-obvious directions that of course I'd already followed EXCEPT for the last tip: UNPLUG the computer from the power source. (See artice here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338)
Result: I was again successful in connecting my camera via FCP5. After the initial reset, I was able to connect and reconnect my camera to FCP5 w/o having to unplug the computer from its power source 3 times. Note: I also made certain I could connect successfully to iMovie at least once.
Learned: The firewire bus required resetting.
Assumption: I should not need to reset the firewire bus again.
    B. HOWEVER, NEW PROBLEM
    1. It's a new day, and upon successful connection to my camera via FCP5, I lost the ability to view the video in the FCP5 viewer; I only see color bars. However, the status is "VTR OK".
    2. I have now reset the firewire bus again as above with sucess(essentially unplugging everything from the computer and power source, waiting up to 10 mins and restarting).
Result: I am currently capturing video and pray for success.
Question: If I lose viewer connection again, what is the appropriate fix? Is it a software issue? And does resetting the firewire bus, a hardware issue, have anything to do with it?
Thanks for your responses. I am obviously a novice and appreciate your experience in this regard.

  • Are these cameras compatible with FCP?

Does anyone out there know if any of these cameras is compatible with Final Cut Pro 5/6? It's not listed on the compatibility list, but I have a hard time believing Sony or Panasonic would make any camcorders that are not compatible with FCP these days. I just want to make sure however, before I buy.

The qualifying devices list is not a good standard to judge by. There are many "devices" that work fine and aren't listed, and conversely, devices that are listed but may not function if the user is also using a certain third-party device; for example, certain listed Canons may indeed work well with FCS2, but attach an external drive to the same FireWire bus and it all goes fubar.

  • Which camera to use with FCP

Im new to HD cams but very familiar with FCP. Im looking into purchasing either the Sony V1U or the Panasonic HVX 200. Most of my shooting is done overseas on 2 week long shoots. What im trying to figure out is what you guys have found best for hard disk recording when using FCP or if there are any differences?
This forum has helped me alot in the past. Thanks for all the help guys

Panasonic is now selling Focus FireStore drives that record the P2 format to disk instead of expensive flash memory. The Focus drives used to be a nightmare in post, but with the P2 metadata and FCP6 doing Log & Transfer the clips no longer come in as FAT32 fragments just a few minutes long (they are stitched together at ingest). Get a FS-100-160 or two and bring a MacBook along with FCP6 to ingest to common FireWire drives each day to free up the FireStores. If you figured on spending a few grand on P2 cards you can get a lot more GB for your dollars with the FireStore drives.

  • Panasonic sdt750 breaking signal . Fix from camera or FCP express?

Hi. I got the Panasonic sdt750 and since I don't know this camera very well I went to a party and every time that a photographic camera took a picture, the video breaks for 3 or 4 frames. How can I fix this? From the camera? With FCP express? I noticed that the other Canon I have don't break signal in front of flashes..Thanks..

It's an artifact of CMOS sensors called Rolling Shutter.
The Canon probaly uses CCD sensors.
    See here for some details:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_shutter
The newer FCP X program has tools for correcting/(making less worse) the issue.
You can download a free trail version if you wish to explore the feature.

  • HT3905 Do I still need to install the HD writer AE 4.0 software that came with my Panasonic HC-V500 video camera or can I just upload video directly to my MAC using i-frame and the i-photo program?

I purchased the Panasonic HC-V500 video camera and it came with the HD AE 4.0 software. Do I still need to install this disc on my MAC or can I upload video directly to my computer by using i-frame and the i-movie program?

    Hi glhiker,
Your video clips will import directly into iMovie.  It's a great video editing program.  I'll include some quick video tutorials to get you started below:
    Apple - Support - Videos
When you open the iMovie application, click HELP > iMOVIE HELP on the menu bar to access the manual for the program.  One of the first topics is Importing Video.
Down the road, you may be interested in our professional video editing application, called Final Cut Pro X.

  • How could i get footage from camera to FCP with no firewire

I have a Imac late 2009 21.5 with a broken fire wire. How can i get footage from Canon XM 1(tape only) to FCP I have a PC that has firewire that works have loaded footage to Movie Maker and put it on a USB flash Drive put that into mac but cant convert it with MPEG clip stream as planed. Any thoughts? I thought second hand mac mini may do the job. Repair firewire £653.14

Without firewire, you cannot capture from that camera in FCP.  It only works via firewire.  So you need another computer or fix that firewire.
Your other method...seems ugly.  Ads layers of compression that might make it look ugly.
Borrow a friends machine with FCP if you can.

  • Camera won't communicate with FCP or Imovie

I apologise if this has been asked a million times before, but I'm on a very tight time crunch, and I think each case is different.
I'm making a montage/video to be shown at a friend's wedding on thursday, and I can't get the freakin camera to communicate with FCP!
I also tried Imovie, and the only thing it recognizes is the built in Isight camera.
    I'm running:
    OSX 10.4.9
    FCP 5.1.9
    QuickT 7.1.5
and the camera's a small sony consumer cam (DCR0PC101E PAL)
I've got all my settings right, i've done this before a million times, but for some reason, something is off today.
I haven't used this particular camera on this computer before, I used to use it on my old powerbook (i don't know if it matters, but I'm wondering if this is an intel issue)
Is there a way to check if the computer itself can read my camera... Like if I go to system profiler, should I look under firewire and find the name of my camera or?
Any help you can send my way is deeply appreciated.

From time to time similiar questions pop up here. But, most indicate everything works just fine in iMovie but not FCP. Since iMovie also does not recognize the camcorder, you might have any number of problems.
Do you have access to another camcorder? If another camcorder works just fine with FCP or iMovie, that would narrow your troubleshooting to the DCR0PC101E.
If another camcorder doesn't work, it could be the firewire cable. I'm guessing the cable to the external drive is a 6/6 and the camera cable is a 4/6, so you might also need to try a different cable.

  • Cameras compatible with FCP

Hello everyone. I'm curious to find out if there is a list that apple or FCP puts out that has all the cameras that are compatible with FCP and if it stays current. About a month ago I was at the beach and my home video camera was left unattended, and was drowned by a huge wave. Luckily I didn't take my Sony FX1. (Which is what I originally was going to do) Anyhow, I'm going to go and buy my wife another camera in the $700.00 to $1,000 dollar range and I want to make sure that whatever camera I purchase I can download the footage in FCP 6. Thanks
    Erv

    Indeed.
As a filthy Englishman, I do not celebrate this holiday.
But all the best to you and yours anyway.

  • Can material shot on HDR-SR or DCR-SR cameras be used with FCP 5?

can material shot on HDR-SR or DCR-SR cameras be captured and edited with FCP 5?

Yep. to monitor it externally though, you'll need a very serious capture card though. Kona 3 would be my choice.
